I agree with you.  I think he'll need a lot of help from the coaching staff to get to a place where we're comfortable with him.  I think Grigson and his scouts fell in love with Green's physical tools (size, speed) and thought those tools would be enough for the coaching staff to develop him into a reliable player.  My gripes with the coaching staff and their general inability to maximize talent aside, I think the only way he can be a reliable player is if we simplify things as much as possible for him because he doesn't have the instincts or experience.  Either let him play center-field as safety, roaming in the secondary and using his speed to cover and hit, or bring him into the box and let him play primarily as a run stuffer/covering short routes.  Another role where I think he could succeed is if the coaches have him add on about 20 lbs (bringing him to about 230 lbs) and let him play linebacker.  He'll still have enough speed to keep up with TEs and RBs, but could have the size to help in run support too.

Because of his physical tools, I think he could carve out a role with the team if the coaches really help him get there.

From what I've seen he has no instincts in coverage. I think its a mistake to play him as a Centerfielder type of S. He has the speed to do it but he, so far, has no feel for routes and the QB's eyes. I'd say he's better suited to play closer to the LOS but then that really sort of defeats the purpose of drafting a speedy S. Again, I hope he works out but I just don't see it.

  2. I'm not saying this to make anyone mad. Not trying to ruffle any feathers or anything like that but I think TJ Green ends up being another Grigson bust. They drafted him 2-3 round too high. He didn't have the experience or the skills to warrant being selected in the 2nd round. He ran real fast at the combine and he caught a couple of guys from behind on his college tape(because he was burned so badly he had to make up space and catch them). I really don't see this guy panning out. Having said that I hope I'm wrong and he becomes a great player. I just don't see it happening. My problem with him is that he just doesn't seem to have any instincts in coverage. Now when he gets burned he doesn't have enough speed to catch NFL WR's.

Allen's full quote read,  “I want to win and I understand that the more skills I can provide the offense, then hopefully the more mismatches that can be created for myself and other players. That’s what I’m about. I’m excited to be utilized as a football player again and not be confined to any box, but just to be a football player, a tight end.”

Yeah, you mean like the mismatch of you against Clowney? Can't wait till Brady starts stamping his feet when stone hands drops a few TD passes.

Allen under achieved here. He blew many an opportunity. Good luck to him at NE. Sour grapes in my opinion. He had better hope that his hands improve for tommy boy.

We will be better imo but I mainly meant we were not gonna be competing for the south cause the other 3 teams have done very well whIle we improved it's not good enough to stay with them especially if Romo goes to Hou

Ya I hear ya. Romo doesn't concern me tho. He's typically hurt. I think Houston is a mess

I'm glad we are doing this but we can't fill all the holes with good players and most of the good FA we are not interested in or they are signed

Im not slamming on you at all. I understand  your concern however I think you are wrong. I think we will be in better shape going into next year. Ballard has made two good signings at LB that I like so far and he isn't done yet. He's getting rid of the dead weight and adding promise. I don't expect us to be SB ready by any means but I think we will add better talent than what we've had

Have a feeling we will sign someone to be the stopgap

We have to sign some DB's. No way we can fill all the holes in the draft. We need bodies at this point. We have huge hole at Rush LB still. No depth at ILB. No depth at S. No starting CB and no depth there. No depth at TE. DL is a huge question with the whole David Parry thing hanging out there. I expect another 3-4 FA signings just to get a pulse at some of these positions. And I certainly hope they are not planning on rolling with TJ Green at S. They need a back up plan there.

Looks like we really are not gonna have high expectations next year and I'm ok with that

LOL, really? I think everything Ballard has done so far is just getting rid of the dead weight. This dude was injured most of the year and when he was playing he stunk. This can only bolster the roster.

The key to the "perfect 3-4 defense" is having 3 big physical down lineman who demand multiple blockers so the lbs can rush from exotic gaps and stunts to be successful you need your dbs to be lock down corners and your safeties must have a lot of range to cover zones. Inside line backers duties are spy, cover flat zones and curls.

As you say in your first sentence, if you have 3 studs up front you are well on your way. In my opinion the next biggest key is that Rush LB. You have to have a great one to make this defense work.

I know the trolls will have to remind me "The season hasn't started yet" or "winning the offseason means nothing".

However, I love what Ballard has done so far.  I thought even last year Dwayne Allen should be traded away while he had value.  He is too inconsistent and hurt too often.  So getting a 4th out of Allen in a year that is strong in defense and RB, too Colts needs, is a good move.   I like how he has released/not resigned some vets we had.  They were just too slow to inconsistent.  As far as free agents, I had hoped the Colts would sign John Simon.  He is a perfect weakside LB to take Waldens place.  Very good against the run.   We have also gotten a punter and a flyer on Mingo.  But most importantly, none of these guys are costing the Colts much as far as free agents go.  After watching Grigson open up the checkbook for too many over the hill players or part time starters who never amounted to anything, I have real optimism that Ballard is going to turn this defense around quickly.  Simon is a very high character, high intensity guy.  We need more of them in the locker room.

Right now, with the exception of the Allen trade which I love, he's just doing the obvious. He's thinning the trash that Grigson brought in here. He's signing some mid level FA's to come in and compete. He's got a lot of work left to do. We have no depth at CB, S, LB(even with the two he has signed its thin)and many other positions.

He made a bad trade, so that means his good trade doesn't count?

Teams trade picks for players all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You don't retrench and refuse to consider that kind of deal just because some of them don't work out well.

I was just being difficult. I know, the Davis trade was a good one. Most of Grigson's FA deals didn't pan out tho and he blew 3 first round picks and apparently he wasn't really easy to get along with. That's what led to his demise.

Depends on what he does with them.  It does you no good to trade away Allen for a 4th if you waste your 4th rounder on a bust.

Well, its hard for a 4th rounder to be a bust. JMO. My definition of a bust only includes players drafted in the 1st or 2nd round but that just me. Anything beyond that I give some leeway. Getting almost 3mil in cap space and collecting a 4th round pick from NE is a great deal in my mind. Dwayne Allen was not what I considered to be a player that we had to have. He has a history of injury problems and his hands are suspect. I cursed him more times than I care to count over this past season.

He's not even going to draft anyone, he'll just trade away all his picks for future picks, every year.

    ???

We don't know what Ballard is. But I hope he's not the kind of guy who would refuse to give up a pick for a good player. Vontae for a 2nd was one of Grigson's best deals.

Trent Richardson for a 1st was another great one

Yeah I would be happy with just back up veteran or an UDFA. I want both Doyle and Swoopes on the field. Don't need someone to necessarily step in unless we have injuries.

Personally I think we'll draft one. I like George Kittle from Iowa. Had a great combine. Reminds me a lot of Dallas Clark. Not quite the same down field threat but iowa churns out good TE's. Still a program that requires their TE's to block and catch passes.

  14. 26 minutes ago, dgambill said:

I hope not. The two best TEs on our team were UDFA....I'm A-OK going down that route one more time or a veteran on a friendly deal. I just don't like expending picks in this draft (considering they are all pretty high now) on a TE. We can find a nice work truck beater TE after the draft especially since we just paid Doyle and we want to get Swoop more action. UDFA and stash him on the practice roster.

This draft is loaded with TE talent. We'll get a good one whether it be with a pick or after the draft. I'm confident

I'm getting ready to do an offseason mock, and it's not going to be very sexy at edge. There isn't a lot out there, and the couple guys that are still available are going to be insanely overpaid.

No news on any of our FA's besides Doyle who apparently has turned down our offers. Im also interested in the status of Walden and Butler. Those 3 players were guys I was hoping we could retain but I think Walden may be looking at a huge payday given the year he had. Someone will probably give him a nice contract. I'd love to see him back because he is a solid player and he's the only guy we have that can pressure the QB from the edge.

It gives them a lot of security. Kind of the same as players not wanting to be franchised.

I don't see the Colts extending either guy. I hope they are both retained when they become FA's but I don't think the team will address either one this off season

He's not that great of a blocker. As much as I do like him, I won't make him out to be something that he isn't. He's got good hands, runs great routes, and has a great rapport with Luck, but he's not an elite blocking TE.

Well, I wont say elite but he IS a great blocker for a TE. That's my opinion. Im not making him out to be something he isn't either but you seem to want to minimize his skill and value to the team. Doyle is a very underrated player and I hope we keep him. If we cant the loss will be felt. Relying on Allen to play 16 games is not a good plan and Swoope isn't anywhere near Doyle's level yet. Can we draft one? Sure, but no draftee is going to come in and pick up right where Doyle left off.

If Jack Doyle leaving really has that much of an impact, we're screwed. I mean, he's good and all, but this isn't like the Pats losing Gronk or something.

Well c'mon Gronk is the premier TE in the league. The impact will be felt no doubt. Doyle is a great blocker and he is a key wheel in the machine. I do not want to see him go. He has become a darn good receiving TE as well.
