Thomas went undrafted out of Oklahoma last year. He played safety in college, but the Packers moved him to linebacker when they put him on their practice squad in November.

It looks like the move is paying off. Thomas is still probably a little small to be an every-down linebacker, but he is able to play in coverage.

“He’s an explosive athlete,” Pettine said. “I think that’s what you need in the National Football League to play defense. The movement skills and explosiveness trump the bulk size you’re looking for in the new era linebacker. You’re looking for guys who are hybrid safety types.”

  3. I rooted for TJ to become a player, but Odum competed hard in this camp and beat him out for the position. Now Odum isn't a lock by any means either once the waiver wire starts to flow, but he's had a good camp & preseason.

I think George Odum makes the team over T.J. Green.....just sayin

Yeah, I rooted for this kid, but he's been invisible this preseason.  Odum on the other hand has been very visible making plays on special teams and on defense. I think TJ Green is on the waiver wire about a week from now.

  5. Watching every snap in every game with focus on the O-Line for a couple of years, I see the O-line shaping out in the following way. However, I do not know if they met their off-season targets, nor their personality traits, work ethic, practice production, film study, etc. That's a lot of missing information that can shift things many other ways. Nonetheless I'm inclined to see the following:

    Castonzo, Nelson, Kelly, Slauson, Good

    Clark, Vuchnovich, ------, Smith, Haeg

While many hate this guy, or that guy, the best 9 on the roster should make it and those are the best 9. #10 would be Bond in my eyes.

  6. I think the ball security issue is one that every player needs tuned up when they enter the league. It's coach-able. He allowed himself to be stood up and then stripped of the ball in the ensuing  swarm. It happened (I think) only once on a return.

The rest (I think) were were mishandles on kicks. It looked like nerves to me.

I'm not bent out of shape on those items.

What does disappoint me me is the lack of vision he's had in his runs. He's running hyper (adrenaline overload) and it's prevented him from seeing what's there. Literately tripping over his feet like he did Saturday on a kick return. I think the game will slow down for him and he'll start to move with purpose and instinct once he gets himself under control.

I'm with you to s certain degree....Leonard, Walker, Moore, M. Adams, Franklin all make it.....but the room NEEDS one veteran doesn't it?

So one of Goode, T. Adams or George is likely the 6th linebacker. Personally I've liked T. Adams more for his on the field play, but Goode's been in the league on a steady playoff team and probably offers more in the film room...?

A reasonable consideration for sure. Yet, his own film works against him I'd say. Almost everyone seems to think we need an upgrade at LB'er level, so if we're seeing it correctly, I'd say there's a good chance we'll see a waiver wire acquisition. Also notable is the tendency Ballard demonstrated to select LB'ers that were both team captains and film rats.

I'm liking Zaire Franklin the more I watch him play. So far he's been athletic, dianoses well, and has been a pretty solid tackler with a bit of a tough demeanor. I've liked him much better than I've liked Skai Moore. I've also liked Matthew Adams.

I like Mathew Adams too. Even in his extremely limited minutes, you can see he's a physical LB'er. The other guy who's been really good at LB'er is Tyrel Adams. He's outplayed Najee Goode and Jeremiah George by a mile. To me, the front row should be Leonard, Franklin and Walker, With T. Adams, M Adams and 2 players to be named later. I could live with S Moore at the number 7, but George and Goode look like the guys that should be moved on to me.

Petition to have IndyStar fire Doyel and find someone who actually seems to like the Colts. He is the most negative team writer in the league and it’s not even close, and that’s including guys writing for teams other than the ones they are fans of......

Agreed! The whining and crying gets old quick. Someone jamb a pacifier in his mouth please!
