On the outside, I'm calm, cool and collected.
On the inside, I'm more or less !!!

1.) It's not an either/or option... One without the other is a dead end.
2.) The draft round pattern simply reflects the human body type variances in a population. Essentially there are 10/100 times more elite athletes at 6' 200lbs as there are those at 6'5 260lbs and even less elite athletes at 6'6" 310lbs. Market principles: desirable and rare = more valuable

I’m wondering is Suh is really in play for us. He fits the “if we really need a player that can make a difference” Ballard profile for a high priced FA.
Plus, I think we can sign a guy now (or soon) without it counting towards the compensatory picks. Not that it really matters to us. If Ballard thinks we’re a player away, like I do, he may pull the trigger on it.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think Ballard has only drafted 2 interior D-linemen so far in his tenure; Grover Stewart and Tyquan Lewis. So, he's mostly addressed the interior D-Line with FA acquisitions. Their vision for the defense is much more in focus now after this years player selections, but the clarity is more at DB, LB and Edge. Their intentions for the interior D-Line is still fuzzy (at least to me). I'd say Ballard & Co. pulling the trigger on a FA DT certainly seems plausible from my LaZboy!

I was one of the people critical of the 'smaller, quicker' DT philosophy. Remember back about 10 years ago when our DTs were all under 300lbs and we were getting gashed.
But you can't argue with success. As you said, we were 8th overall in run D. I think we were in the top 5 in some of the run D categories.
I too was a critic of those lighter fronts back in the Polian days. Last year the Colts had Al Woods most of the year and Grover Stewart all year. Both are 330lb NT's. This year Grover is the only D-Lineman on the current roster over 300lbs (333). I'm already eyeing that and wondering if the D-line will shift toward having only Under-Tackle gap players again. It still makes me uneasy to this day.
Conversely, not even one of the 15 current O-Linemen is under 300lbs.

I like it! Quality player, quality signing!

A. I'm inclined to see this as a potentially awesome draft class. The organization has the coaching staff set and scouting staff dialed in. They prepared, then selected with purpose, vision and clarity.
Seriously, on what basis would I grade it any less. Who's grading system is better than the Colts current one?

I believe when we see Campbell take his 1st WR Screen to the house, we'll all want more...

Turned him into an OT. Boom!

I think the Colts will lean toward their #1 pick to being a starter week 1. The front rows need to be better first, then the 2nd row can become a focus.

Can't we do both?

The signing tells me Ballard, Eberflus, Ventrone, Williams, Gannon, etc. have researched him, studied his college and pro film, and decided his traits generally match a role they have in their systems. Other players will be added with traits that align with the teams overall concepts, and the competition for a spot on the 53 man roster will ensue.
Team building in progress...
Carry on!

When the season ended, I felt like these were the biggest needs:
Offense - RT, FB, WR/KR/PR
Defense - DE, DT, CB, CB, Hybrid Safety, SS & LB
Now with the FA signings & some additional thought, I've added TE to the mix. Also, with Houston signed for 2 years, CB, Hybrid Safety & Offensive skill position can draft earlier.
Offense - WR/KR/PR, FB, TE, OT
Defense - DT, Hybrid Safety, CB, DE, LB, CB, SS

Frank is right IMHO. If you can't run it at a high level, the odds of winning in the playoffs plummet. Defensive Coordinators still stop the run first, because if you don't, you're in for a long day on defense, and your odds of winning anything plummet. Some things will never change, no matter how many passes are thrown.
They'll need better blocking at the TE & WR positions, and the addition of a" Beat Down" RB to meet those goals. Rathman 2.0 type...

I think the odds of trading up would seem to be significantly less than sitting put, (or even trading down if the player you want isn't there)

Ballard is building from the inside out and has stated he wants "Dominant" players on the inside of the D-line. It's a key to his build strategy and he'll snatch one with his #1 in a heartbeat if there's one on the board. I can also see him making a move to get one if he can get the right trade.
So, DT #1

Well, I'm happy Geathers will be back in 2019.
