Colts, Jonathan Taylor find a win-win

    By Mike Florio

...The Colts wanted to pay running back Jonathan Taylor on a year-to-year basis. Taylor wanted more security than that.

Eventually (and against their wishes), the team made an offer that Taylor didn’t refuse.

The reported three-year, $42 million extension with $26.5 million in total guarantees replaces the situation that the Colts could have engineered with Taylor. Finish this year at $4.3 million, tag him in 2024 (if he’s still playing at a high level), and tag him again in 2025 (if he’s still playing at a high level). That would have allowed the Colts to walk away after this year or next year at no further expense

The full numbers eventually will emerge. When they do, here’s a guess that could be very close to the actual numbers. Taylor likely has a fully-guaranteed salary for 2024 roughly equal to the franchise tag and an injury-guaranteed salary in 2025 roughly equal to the second tag.

Any signing bonus Taylor gets now would potentially come from the 2024 guarantee, another sweetener aimed at getting Taylor to accept.

And that’s ultimately how deals like this get done. The Colts made Taylor an offer he couldn’t refuse. Not with only $4.3 million in hand. He now has plenty more fully guaranteed at signing, plus more guaranteed against potential injury.

The Colts would have preferred to play it out one year at a time, or Taylor would have gotten an offer on a long-term deal a while ago. The relationship went sideways because the Colts were fine with letting it play out on a year-to-year basis, and Taylor was not.

And so they found a way to make it work, with Taylor sticking around and the Colts giving him a level of security that, before today, they were not required to provide. It’s not great, but it’s far better than what Taylor was entitled to receive.

Safeties are not going to be able to stay deep because of Taylor’s home run ability. Moss has played well but isn’t a home run ability rusher. Do teams really only had to worry about AR. Now with Taylor’s home run threat they can’t stay deep. Pierce and Pittman should really benefit from this. Then imagine how confused teams will be trying to figure out who is rushing the ball. Richardson has already been good at disguising it.

I get it... and like I said, I hope you are right.

but it just seems, it's been so long, with this line, that I really can't remember, what a hole to run thru looks like, or a Colts receiver being wide open.

..and I also get that the defense might screw it up. lol

Personally, I think the only thing it changes about the offense is we have a RB who can break the defense any time he touches the ball.

I don't think defenses change how they play the run based on who the RB is, and I think the analytics have shown that. I think the biggest factors are situation and personnel/formation. If the offense comes out in heavy personnel with the QB under center, the defense is going to stack the box and key on the run. You don't need a game breaking RB for play action to work. If the offense is in 11 personnel, the defense is probably going to play nickel and respect the pass (unless the QB sucks). Having JT isn't going to make teams stay in base or put 8 in the box, unless the offense shows run.

Same thing for the option game. They play their keys, it doesn't matter who the back is.

What changes is that, if JT has the ball, he can turn a modest gain into a huge play, whereas none of our other backs have that capability.

We should see soon enough, what difference Taylor will make? AR5 has given the running game some life...

but I do not expect to see any gaping holes for Taylor to run through, or any of our WRs to be running wide open.

Here's what I think. I don't agree at all with the extension. It smells like Leonard and Nelson all over again.  Signing players to an extension when u didn't have to. Taylor won  this battle. He sat out and took a chance that the Colts would miss him, which I think they did. Who knows, with him in the line up, they could be 5 and 0. I think this move is more to protect Richardson. Getting hurt in back to back games,, I believe, scared the hell out of the Colts. If they have a solid run game, it will open up the passing game. I do think Ballard was feeling some  heat. They are 2 and 2 and Titans coming to town. They haven't won a home game in 7 tries and thr Titans own  them. I am not sure Ballard survives if this team is picking high in the draft again. So when everyone, including me, said Taylor had no leverage, we were wrong. Taylor is brilliant and he may have mapped this all out in his head. Good for him and he got what he wanted.

Ballard will survive regardless of where the Colts draft. Because of AR being so raw, he will be given a pass, at least for another year

There are no rules about how this stuff gets reported, so generally it's best to wait for the details. But I would expect that the contract is for three additional years, and would expire after 2026.

the reason I was asking is, I think I remember another time, that the team did something similar? In that instance, the extension included the current year. It is actually quite a big deal, if it includes 2026 or only 2025

Yes….  Eligible AFTER this season.  But after tomorrows game there are still 12 more games to go.   It’s still very early in a marathon season.   And the team could always decide after season four if they wanted.   They did with Luck.

But if the Colts want to decide, odds are the decision will be made on what KP does in the final 12 games and not the first 5.   All I’m saying it’s that it’s still early, plenty if time left.   That’s all.

Even after this season, I doubt they would extend a guy like Paye, if he's still eligible for an additional year. Why would they?

Raimann being out sucks but at least AR is mobile enough to avoid sacks. I feel like the TEs have to step up blocking this game to help out the backup LT.

Yep. With Raimann out, they will, once again, be depending on blocking from TEs. Which unfortunately means another week of being "inactive" for Will Mallory.

Freeland getting all these snaps is going to help colts in the long run. Colts will have a better backup because of it. Having Kelly back will help Richardson a ton get into the right play call. Will be fun to see Dayo have more snaps.

Good point. I have heard, in the first few games, Ryan Kelly had graded out well.

and perhaps, having Kelly back, will straighten out the pass rush problems, which the Colts attributed to miscommunication?

I admit I have no idea, how creative the Titans defensive coordinator and/or schemes are. However, should they mix up blitzes, stunts, etc... I'm skeptical that Kelly will solve these woes.

Actually, I thought French did an adequate job at center. I will be watching to see if Kelly provides a noticeable improvement. Or if it's about the same? Or worse?

Our o-line will probably have their hands full, with Simmons and Autry, like they did last week with Aaron Donald.

Just about all of our linemen struggled (including Freeland) vs Donald, as they moved him all around the line. Donald has a great bull rush, is very strong, and knows all the moves.

The wildcard to watch for the Titans, is Harold Landry, who's more of a pure speed pass-rusher than both Simmons and Autry. Landry will probably line up opposite Blake Freeland in obvious passing downs, and will certainly provide a good test, as to how well BF can protect against the outside speed rush.

Well... I had previously posted that I was wishing to see what Grant Stuard could do in place of Leonard.

and since we know the Titans will probably give Bradley's D a heavy dose of Henry... Maybe we get to see a little of GS? We also have LBs Segun Olubi and Cameron McGrone.
