Will Taylor Play in Week 5?

...When asked if there was a chance Taylor could play this week, Steichen answered, "Could be, yes," adding that the Colts will see how Taylor looks in practice before making any decision.

"He's in good shape conditioning-wise," Steichen said. "Obviously putting on the pads and practicing is a different deal. I know it's been a long time since he's played football. So we'll see how practice goes this week, see where he's at physically from putting the pads on and we'll go from there."

Given the three-week period the Colts have to make a decision, it's possible Taylor remains on the PUP list through the start of Week 8.

Taylor has not played since December 17 of last year. The former All-Pro reinjured his right ankle in that game and was placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2022 season. Taylor also missed the Colts' offseason program, citing lingering pain in his ankle, and has been rehabbing to start this season....

First, the Colts probably already have an idea of what this would look like.  They see these guys everyday in practice and eat and breathe football and film for a living.  They know their players.

Second, if the Colts think that will help them they will do it.  One thing people have praised Shane for is willingness to bench guys to hold them accountable.  So if they don’t make that change it tells me they don’t think it’s the best thing for the team.

Third, if Shaq’s injury is like most big injuries the final part of the rehab he needs is probably playing time.  So as much as some don’t like it they are probably going to let him keep working through the injury to comeback.  It’s part of the rehab process.

We will see. Regardless of how people have praised Steichen for benching players, I have a feeling we wont see Stuard, unless Shaq gets some kind of injury (...which I could see happening) It's one thing for Steichen to bench a guy like Baker, but Leonard is another. Some big egos there. Both Shaq and Ballard. If Leonard continues on this path of mediocrity, then they really should do what is best for the team. Practice does not always show what a player could, or might do in a real game. And all it would take, is for Stuard to come in, occasionally, and show what he's got? ...and as for Shaq's rehab process, that should not come at the expense of winning or losing a game.

Colts plan for Jonathan Taylor to come off PUP list and practice Wednesday

...but Steichen said Taylor is excited about getting back to work with the team.

Steichen also said that Taylor could play in Week Five against the Titans and that how Taylor looks on the practice field will determine whether that happens.

Shocked at Kevin Bowen this morning. All he did was preach this was a evaluation year all off season. Now he is acting like this is a Super Bowl team that lost yesterday. The two early wins does not change this being a evaluation year.

They certainly have some serious evaluation to do

I wouldn’t say he’s a liability, he’s just not an asset like he used to be. A guy like Baker was a liability when he was starting at corner. Leonard just isn’t playing up to his contract and that’s as concerning. If anything Stuard should get more snaps so we can see what we have there.

He just doesn't make any plays. When you do see Leonard he is never at the bottom of the pile, but rather, he comes jogging into the camera view, standing there after the whistle blows. I was watching him a few times and noticed how he can't shed a block to save his life. Yeah he picks up a few tackles every week, but never a big hit, or tackle for loss, etc.

It would be great if they would give Stuard a few reps. In the preseason he really impressed me. Quite a few times, I remember, he would come flying like a rocket in to make a nice solo open field tackle. No doubt in my mind GS would be an upgrade over Shaq at this point

Ballard wouldn’t cut him though. That’s not how Ballard rolls. I’m not saying I disagree that he shouldn’t be getting paid top tier money to be the 3rd best LB on the team, but Ballard won’t just outright cut one of the locker room leaders.

Ballard has shown to be really good at drafting and developing LBs, so he wouldn’t be hard to replace.

I get how Leonard has that locker room leadership quality, but it just don't make sense, to keep playing a guy who's a liability out there. At some point you got to put your best players on the field. Perhaps Ballard can avoid cutting Leonard, and keep him on the team? So he can stand on the sidelines for inspiration, like last year?

The easy answer is just keep woods on IR until there is a TE injury. Because cox won’t be back next year most likely.

Right. Ally Cox had like two catches so far. And so did Mallory. They probably won't want to pay him even more money next year, so it would be real dumb to cut Mallory.

Diana Russsini said today that he has stayed in great shape and is ready to play. He had to play at some point soon or his contact will toll.

and he's probably told by his agent to get hurt the first time he carries the ball.

I like Mallory that being said think he gets cut with hope he make it to ps

That would be a shame if they cut Mallory since we have one too many tight ends I expect he would get snatched up. The guy looks like one of our better draft picks. He may develop into a really good player.

I think he will. Probably will be on a pitch count but I expect him back.

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling it will be a while (if ever?) before Taylor sees the field for the Colts.

He has not practiced with the team, or taken a hit, in like a year.

Report: Colts plan to initiate 21-day practice window for RB Jonathan Taylor on Wednesday

...Taylor is first eligible to be activated off of PUP starting after Week 4 on Monday. Once he begins practicing, the Colts will have 21 days then to decide whether to activate him to the active roster. He previously was ineligible to practice with the team...

It’s scheme and injuries. I think he’s fully healthy ( he wouldn’t be out there if he wasn’t), but the injuries and physical toll from playing that position have piled up. Shaq peaked in terms of production like 2 years ago. Would be hard to move on from him because of the contract and injury history.

but if he continues to play the way he's been playing... They must to move on, regardless of his contract. A team needs to have its best players on the field. You just cant continue to play a guy because he makes more money. I believe, if Grant Stuard had been given all of Shaq's snaps we would have seen much more production from him.

How many sacks will he be charged with in the game?  I will guess two.  How many holding calls or other penalties will he be charged with?  I will guess three.  I Hope I’m wrong but let’s hope they give him some help out there.

I think Freeland will do fine, man for man, blocking his assigned defenders. I worry more, the sacks and penalties be a result of, blitzes and stunts, where the Colts line is not adjusted to compensate

Seems like Franklin has taken over as the vocal leader of the group. Dude is a beast! Seeing a subdued Leonard is a little bit of a downer for me. I miss his passion and fire along with his elite playmaking abilities. Hopefully he has the patience post op to get back to that place without losing confidence in himself. I know it's early but our front seven seems legit so far.

Yeah. I really liked Franklin for a couple years now. When he first earned the starting LB spot, I noticed how he was making more tackles than anyone we had in recent years. If Zaire can stay healthy, he may end up one of the best LBs in Indy history. It took some here (on this forum), quite some time to realize how great a player he is. As for Leonard... He has certainly been mediocre. I like what you said. IMO I believe his issues may be more mental than physical, at this point. We will have to see if he is able to regain his old form, but if he does not improve, as the season progresses, then it's time for the team to move on.

New Shocking Details Revealed About Jonathan Taylor’s Colts’ Future

...Running back Jonathan Taylor is eligible to return to the lineup in Week 5, as he had to miss the first four games because he was on the PUP List coming out of training camp. He is expected to not only be in the lineup for the Colts but also stick with the franchise for the long term.

According to a former NFL executive who spoke to NFL Analysis Network, Taylor isn’t going anywhere. The executive revealed that Indianapolis had no plans to actually trade their star running back and had wanted to keep him the whole time.

“The Colts have never wanted to trade Jonathan Taylor. In fact, they are still planning to sign him long-term. All they want to do is make sure he’s healthy and capable of being the version of Taylor from two years ago in Shane Steichen’s offense. He’ll remain in Indianapolis.”...
