If Luck would have stayed and we made it to the AFC Championship game, would the team still be considered in rebuilding mode?

I think the "rebuilding" was meant more to have depth, which wasn't there on Grigsons roster.  I think we have depth at most positions now.  The roster is pretty solid.  Rebuilding usually doesn't mean top 5 players at each position.  QB is the biggest step left to rebuild.

I agree for the most part.

I think you’re going to be correct.  As much as we want the next franchise QB, Ballard is going to take the BPA on HIS draft board.

And I suspect he has at least one DT rated higher than the 3rd or 4th QB that will be available at 13. (Burrow and Tua will be gone)

What about Herbert will he still be there?

I kept hearing in 2018 how JB could start for a lot of teams, and how he wouldn’t stay around past 2019 to be Lucks backup.

    so my question is:

Wasn’t JB doing everything possible in the past several off seasons to prepare himself to be a starting QB somewhere in 2020? Wasn’t he working on his weak areas?

I assume he was, and I don’t see how those areas magically improve this off season, simply because he has sufficient notice that he may be the Colts 2020 starting QB, or at least will be competing for the job.

I couldn't agree more he's had plenty of enough chances to show what he can do. I think we have seen the best of JB and it time to move on. But haven said that I do believe JB will be the starting QB next season unless something unforeseen happens like a Luck return not likely though.

QBR plays into keeping drives alive, 3rd down conversions and converting drives in the red zone into TDs, IMO.  Defensively, being top 10 in D categories like points allowed or turnover ratio can make up for lower rankings in yardage allowed, IMO. Rushing offense may be key to control tempo but the QB still has to convert those 3rd downs via passing to keep drives alive for points. Teams like the Patriots use the short pass like a run to get positive yardage consistently.

So, even if it was a 5 FG game vs Ravens in the divisional playoff round, Peyton converted several key 3rd downs in the passing game to keep drives alive against an elite defensive unit.

This is a very good article you guys need to read:

What Peyton Manning was so good at was being very good on third down and consistency throughout the game something we don't have right now. Our QB now basically sucks but would be a good backup at best. For us to be super Bowl contenders we need a consistent QB and one that can brings come back in games when needed and other pieces to the puzzle as well but QB being the most important.

he was the same the first half.  3 of Jacobys “wins” the team scored less than 20.  He sucked the whole year.  He sucks.

He really does we need to get much better at QB no doubt. Does anyone think that Ballard would trade up to get who he wants? I do if he really loves the kid I think he will but it would take a lot of love.

Look just get as many draft picks as possible. Trade jacoby. Call mark sanchez. Let's go full lose for lawrence mode next year. No middle of the pack crap.  Lol  or try and get tua this year, cause cincy isnt giving up burrow. He is from Ohio. He is gonna put ugly tiger striped jerseys in those seats out there.

Yeah, I love Trevor Lawerence but won’t even know if he’s entering the draft until the end of the season most likely though. So you can’t count on that.

He's been the one saying that more than Irsay.

But he's the GM.  Its his job to plan and put the pieces in place.  I'm sure he is a bit * at Luck for leaving him in a tough spot, and probably doesn't really want him back thinking that Luck could just up and do that again.

Ballard has probably moved on even more than Luck has. He's got a job to do and can't be thinking about a waffler.

I do think there is some truth to your post for sure.

Ballard says he does not regret keeping Vinateri, even though he was awful. I don't understand Ballard. He seems to be fine losing games because of terrible kicking.

Ballard is stubborn I’m losing faith in him and this organization. Ballard won’t be around long if he don’t stop babying players especially his QB

Paraphrase: yeah the team sucks, please buy season tickets anyway.

Edit, Since sarcasm doesn't come through on the internet. It's awesome that Mr Irsay sends out these little messages to fans, and he seems like an awesome owner that genuinely cares about the state of his franchise and the fan base

I was just glad when he said he believes in Ballard. Because I still do but after 5 or 6 and he still isn't winning then maybe my confidence will waiver but until I still believe.

Decent back up, but a guy that just plays scared. He holds onto the ball too long, misses open receivers and just can't move the team. This game has to be the final nail in that debate..

I agree but unfortunately we don't get to make those decisions. What do you propose the Colts do though? Do you draft a QB or do go get a savvy vet that probably won't pan out? I'd personally would draft one. But is the one they want going to be there when they draft even if they trade up that's the question. As far as Luck coming back none of us know anything about whether Luck would even consider coming back. As far as we know Luck is completely done with no thought at all of ever coming back.

I agree that Andrew would be welcomed back with open arms. I also understand Irsay’s approach since you can’t hold out hope that he returns.

This is speculation on my part but I think he has had conversations with Andrew during the season so far and he doesn’t anticipate Andrew coming back this offseason but might leave the door open for after that.

it would certainly make for an interesting scenario if the Colts draft a QB this offseason and then Andrew comes back somewhere down the road.

Your are correct the Colts can't wait around to see if he's going to come back or not. I think they'll going to be looking to draft one and seeing what's it's going to take to get who they want.

I agree. This forum definitely appreciates him a lot more now now that we've seen life without him. The alternative is pretty terrible. In retrospect, I apologize to him for bashing him on not beating the Pats. He was keeping the team going. If only we had him now. I can only pray he comes back next year.

Yeah, Ballard and co should beg him to come back. If not we need to draft a QB high and make some trades to get there.

When it comes to Luck, it's simple.  In January, Irsay, Ballard and Frank need to sit down with Luck and ask one simple question.  Are you happier without football?  We understand you were exhausted and burned out from the injuries and rehab, but now that you've been without football for a season, are you happier without it?  If the answer is yes, fine, you move on.  If the answer is no, get back into the building because you have a lot of unfinished business to attend to.  Luck still has the whole second half of his career, possibly another decade to play.

You are absolutely correct I couldn't agree more.

One of two things will happen with Luck. He'll either return next year (I can see Irsay making a plea to him based on our QB position and so we don't have to draft a QB) or he'll stay permanently retired. This is a perfect chance for him to return where INDY and the fanbase will welcome him back with open arms. It's next year or never for Luck.

I truly think I agree with you.

I find it odd that this guy continues to live in the city. Someone on twitter said they saw him at whole foods. I thought for sure he would go to some place in Europe to relocate.

He's said many times how much he likes it here.

  16. I think we should lose for draft position and draft a QB. But I'm not totally convinced that Luck isn't coming back though. I know everyone wants to speak for him and say there's no way he's coming back and maybe they're right but until I hear it from Luck's mouth there's always a possibility. So stop acting like you know him and stop speaking for him. But if he's not coming back then we do need to draft a QB but will need to do some trading to get the franchise caliber one and I like Herbert but some say he may go number one or even fall out the first round who knows. He had a bad game against a bad Arizona State team which could hurt his stock.
