  1. Well, you don't have to be "old" to be a FA. Through FA you can get players who have proven that they can compete in the NFL, not kids who have never played a single down in the NFL. You only get so many elite picks in the draft, and it's always a gamble.

Sure there are some FA's who get overpaid, but that has been known to happen with regard to 1st round picks in the draft as well. Quite a few $ have been flushed down the drain on 1st round picks that turned out not to have what it takes to play in the NFL anyway. I think there are quite a few teams out there, that knows what I'm talking about.

Why not go both the FA and the draft way, and pick up the quality you can get from both?

Agreed CopenhagenColt. I couldn't have said it better. People forget that there are many FAs that are the victims of cap space and contract debates and style not fitting into the type of O or D being ran, etc.

I would question people with the mentality that FAs are sub-par talented players with this: If after this year Freeney hasn't adapted to the 3-4 D, and we decided to not renew his contract therefore he goes into FA, is he a player who lacks talent and isn't a superstar? Just saying...perspective...

  2. Im ready to see what these Corners can do now that they are given a real chance but we still dont have a shutdown Corner even if they are better

Me too Gavin, but I'm going to hold off on saying we don't have a shut down Corner until they have a chance to actually play. Previous coaching kept them from being able to do that IMO.

  3. I think what this boils down to with players is they all feel like they have to band together and back each other, but sometimes wrong is just wrong. Hitting with the intent to injury is wrong. Period. If you participate in a scheme that gives you a bonus of any kind for hitting with the intent to injure you should be punished. End of story.

All players that were not involved in this scheme need to realize these guys were WRONG. They weren't "just playing football" as they would like to put it. They were intentionally injuring so they could get a little extra dough on the side. Time for them all to get their heads out of their rears and realize that. To stop belly aching about how wrong it is and realize the Commish is in the right.

Bottom line here is if you play football as it is supposed to be played = without malicious intent, you will be ok and not suffer any fines or suspensions. Once you allow malicious intent to enter into your play you are fair game to be called out on it.

Again, I say good job Goodell. Stick to it.

  4. ROBERT MATHIS@RobertMathis98

I disagree w/ suspending the players.if u don't do what coaches say then u get replaced by sum1 who will attempt a career assassination on U

    Collapse

That through me for a loop. Seeing Robert's reaction!

It's a little shocking, but if we look at it from a players stand point I can see why he thinks that way. Bow, that's not saying I wouldn't have loved to hear him say "I agree with the suspensions. You reap what you sow." I would also like to think if he was in a similiar situation as the Saints players, he would not have participated...the point of the matter is, the coaches should never have had such a scheme going, and yes, the players should not have participated...too bad we don't live in a perfect world...

And it's a good thing we'll never have to deal with something like this.

  5. So, is that the end of it? No more suspensions or punishments, or this is just what they have so far? I definitely think that Harper should receive punishment b/c he was just as deep into it as Vilma, Smith, and the others. But then that is my opinion and I really have no say in the matter...

The loss of Vilma is a big OUCH! But, then I really don't have sympathy for the Saints organization b/c they allowed it to happen. You break the rules and lie, you will get caught and punished.

Good job Commish...but like someone else mentioned, if you go to the SB take a LOT of security with you... ...

  6. Don't forget Bethea and Powers. We just needed a NT and CB in the draft and we got a NT so i'm good with that until we can coach what we have up to standards. People still forget we have 3 pro bowlers on our defense and that says alot.

Thanks! I can't believe I forgot those two guys!

And EXACTLY!! People forget the coach that was in charge of the defense and the real reason it was horrible...the Tampa 2 "Cover Nobody" scheme. Times will be different with a coach who actually knows defense.

  7. We also shouldn't forget the CLASS and LOYALTY of Reggie Wayne. Throughout December and January he clearly thought the Colts were done with him, and that he wouldn't be back.

In spite of this, he never had anything but positive things to say about Indy even when it was clear that the Front Office's first choice was to keep and pay Garcon instead of him. Then, when free agency began, Garcon bolted for crazy money in Washington in the first HOUR. Many would have spurned a team that regarded them as a 'second' choice after so many years of service. Instead, Reggie chose to come back here to a 2-14 team and will likely retire a Colt.

Amen to that! Reggie is the MAN! And he'll be catching TDs in HIS CORNER til he decides to retire--a COLT FOREVER!

  8. The fact that Grigson said that doesn't upset me. The fact that everyone is focusing on that does get on nerves b/c they are taking it and running with it saying we didn't do well in the draft at all. Which is not the case and moves me into answering your next question of if I'm happy about the draft--YES! I think Grigson did a good job with the draft. I think he showed discipline by sticking to our board and not deviating from it. TIme will tell how well we did, but I am pleased. We provided our new franchise guy with targets and added a piece to our O-line.

Next question of who do I think made the decisions? Well, our draft board was set by (I think) Grigson, Pagano, Telesco, and Telesco's crew of scouts. I think they ran their picks and decisions by Irsay, but i think the decisions were actually made by Grigson and Pagano.

I think we will be surprised how our season turns out. We have provided Luck with targets: Fleener, Allen, Wayne, Collie, Avery, Brown, Carter, Ballard... Our defense is not in the tubes, granted it could be better, but it does not stick. Remember on our D we have: Mathis, Freeney, Angerer, Redding, Zbikowski...we are not complete, but we are getting there. Not to mention our guys are excited and ready to get going...

    BUILD THE MONSTER!

Time to get revved up COLTS fans :)

  9. I could not disagree more..

Luck will ALWAYS be compared to Peyton Manning.

Not just because fo the Colts but because of their dads.

I hope he gets to the point where he can embarace it...

I would love to hear him say that he wants to be the player Manning was..

Its a ton of pressure..but big time pressure is what the QB position is all about....

I don't think 21is Superman is saying Andrew won't be compared to Peyton. I think instead he is saying that people should not compare him to Peyton. In fact, his exact words were: "...Luck shouldn't be compared to anyone. Let him develop into the type of QB he wants to be; let him be Andrew Luck instead of the next Peyton or the next Montana or anything..."

To which I point I do agree. People should let him be his own man with his own style of playing. Judge him on his accomplishments, not those of others, but realize this will never happen. Too many people like to draw comparisons, so he will be compared to Peyton for many years to come.

That being said, Luck said in a interview after the draft that being compared to Peyton is an honor, and a dream.

I have no doubt that Andrew's shoulders are "big enough" to shoulder the weight that has already been placed on him. Plus he has the encouragement of veterans like Mathis and Wayne to help him through it.

  10. Mike is right. It is too early to say "this draft is a bust" or "how stupid is it we did this instead of..." We have to allow these rookies a chance to show us why our FO decided on them.

Also, I personally like the philosophy of sticking to the board rather than dipping low in talent just to fill a "need" position. What happens in a situation like that is even though the position was filled by a pick, the need wasn't met b/c that player ends up being a bust and we get rid of him...this to me equals a wasted draft pick. I'd rather wait on quality.

    Good post, thanks HtownColt!

  11. Good stuff.

    ROBERT MATHIS@RobertMathis98

Had convo w/ our new #TriggerMan &im;impressed thus far. He's mentally locked n loaded2lead his squad! ONLY (cont) http://tl.gd/h7kbdu

    ROBERT MATHIS@RobertMathis98

@TitleistMac RT: he will never be peyton <~~~~~~ #Deepbreath or Montana,Favre,Brady or even Jamarcus Russell because he is ANDREW LUCK dude.

One more reason why I love Robert Mathis. How right he is to point out that Andrew Luck will be just that--Andrew Luck, his own man with his own skills and his own accomplishments.

And I love that our team is pumped and ready to get to work. Pagano said his phone was "blowing up" just seconds after the announcement was made that we drafted Luck by players wanting Andrew's phone # to welcome him to the team.

I also love that players like Wayne are--according to videos on Colts.com--already getting in touch with Luck to see about meeting at various places to work out together and start developing chemistry.

Hang on folks, it's gonna be a good ride!

  12. I get the frustration, but I honestly think our draft selections took the turn they did for two reasons: 1) Grigson was sticking to their board. If someone wasn't available, they went to the next in line. It just so happens with the way things went we draft heavily on the offensive side. 2) We are trying to build a team around our new franchise QB. Thus the 2 TEs, 2 WRs, and 1 RB, plus the OT pick up.

I agree we need to beef up and better our D, but we can pick up some defensive undrafted FAs, and work on our D in next years draft. We can't get it all at once. Time.

I personally am ok with the heavy O drafting that was done. We've gotta give our QB weapons and protection.

  13. I like this pick up personally. Pagano made some comments after the draft about how some of their picks will have created some competition in the team. I see Fugger as one of those guys who will definitely bring competition. Some more stats on him (which I'm sure you all have seen, but I'll share anyways): in 2011 he had: 33 stops, eight sacks and 13.5 tackles for losses. He also forced three fumbles and recovered one fumble,

Overall I think Fugger will be a good asset...time will tell though huh?

  14. This was my point too. I was thinking Upshaw.....I also saw Allen on the board still and I said "Brody Eldrige is it?" Then I said we will soon have 2 TEs.

Good call Brent! You were quite right! I still wish that we could have gotten Glenn, but we can't get everything we want...

  15. If it wasn't for the Luck/Fleener connection we would not be into Fleener.

It's a tough one. Since the connection is there.

At the same time Luck can build connections with others. And it would help him just as much to have a defense that can make stops.

It's the connection, the size, the agility and atheleticism, the potential... ...

  16. I assumed the Giants were going to take him, but they went with another running back which I thought was odd. Take Fleener next without question.

The Giants had me scratching my head on their choice. I was sitting there saying, "Welp, there goes Fleener" and then I was dumb founded when they took Wilson...

  17. Unless the Rams take him at 33 or someone jumps in front of us or we get a trade we can't pass up this seems like a no brainer. It's one thing to get a tool for your young rookie QB, it's another thing to be able to get a tool that was your young rookie's QB go to guy in college.

My biggest point exactly GoColts8818! While I like Glenn and Upshaw, in my mind you just can't pass Fleener up.

  18. I would like Fleener, but could see them going defense. I don't think we need another blocking TE - would love to have someone that can complement our excellent receivers. (I am counting on Avery returning to form).

Fleener's strength isn't in blocking, but his ability to handle and catch the football and get good yardage is great. Eldridge is good at blocking but not so great at getting the yardage that is desired now-a-days from TEs. Quite honestly, a Fleener/Eldridge combo could be quite good for us...and in my opinion, I think that Fleener could learn to block better = enter in the Colts coaching staff at this point.

I too could see them going either way,,,and the suspense and curiosity is killing me! haha!

  19. 1st round value or not

Do you want a TE that's potentially better than Clark was? Do you want a Gronk?

    That is the real question.

Im thinking the Rams take Glenn :( , it would fill a obvious hole for them.

So would you rather have Suggs(Upshaw)or Gronk(Fleener)?

That is the question isn't it...truth be told I would LOVE to have both of them. But, at this point I would jump at the chance of a Gronk (Fleener in this case). I do wonder though, with Pagano if Glenn is available at #34 if we don't go ahead with him...

  20. I have Fleener at the top of my list followed closely by Upshaw, but I don't get the whole 'familiarity thing'.

    1) You have plays.

    2) You run the plays.

    3) You throw it to the open guy.

Yes, true. The play does call you to go to a certain position. But, we all know any QB in the league has a "favorite" to throw too. Luck and Fleener have the relationship they build at Stanford. Luck is familiar with Fleener. He knows his ticks, he knows his style, he knows his abilities, and he has confidence in Fleener.

I also recognize and know that Andrew is good enough that he will become comfortable with players like Collie and Wayne, but I also think there is value in his knowledge of Fleener.

  21. I personally didn't think Fleener would still be available after the first round of the draft...I thought for sure someone would have snatched him up...but the fact that he's still available makes me like a giddy teenager! I would love nothing more than to have him along side Andrew this Fall. (Of course that is if St. Louis doesn't take him first.) Can't you picture it now? Luck having his favorite TE to throw to...a little piece of familiarity to him as he begins his NFL career (not saying he needs familiarity, but...)...not to mention I do believe that Fleener is going to have a great career in his own right.

So, I would like our #34 pick to be Fleener.

Of course this draft is deep and there are other players that are still available that would be great pick ups for us. Players like Glenn, Hill, some would put Jenkins in this category...

I would like to know:what are your thoughts? Would you like to see Fleener as a Colt? Would you like to see us pick him up at #34, or would you rather we choose someone else?
