Actually he didn’t validate that about JB. In the 1075fan story it had pretty much the entire convo. He talked about JB and how much he loves him and said JB was only doing what he has been instructed to do.  He even mentions it’s not about his numbers. He mentions how him being on the field opens things up for other players because he gets double teamed. Doyle and Rogers TD Sunday were because he got double teamed. He is a competitor and he mentioned it’s hard to not be on the field more and watch his team mates lose. He also mentioned how if he was out there more the scores might be as close. He is one of the best playmakers he needs to be in the field at least 60% of the plays.  Especially when all the WR are injured.

So you agree with me then? Because that's what I basically said.

    Here is the quote again:

"That’s my brother," Ebron said of Brissett. "But what he’s bound by and what he’s doing is what he’s doing. Doesn’t change our relationship at all. He’s got to be pro, and I gotta be a pro. If me being a professional is going out there and making the best of whatever I got, then that’s what is. But am I frustrated if it is a little bit (less than I want)?  Absolutely."

I don't see any other way to interpret what he said...the offense (or at the very least Ebron's involvement in it) is being limited by or for JB...which some here have been arguing.

Ebron's a good weapon...but he's not this elite weapon that is being held back by lack of playing time. When he's on the field...he target share is high. But Reich wants a strong run game and a versatile offense...and Ebron not being able to block doesn't really serve that right now. Doyle does...and he's healthy this year. Like Nyheim Hines...Ebron has a specific role.

Plus, Ebron is dropping balls at a league-leading rate (12.9%)...so he's somewhat difficult to trust (for Reich or JB).

I get where he is coming from...and that's he a competitor...but things have changed this season. IF Ebron was saying these quotes on another team...I think many people here would call him a "me first" player.

    Stephen Morris Memorial

Morris balled out in that 2017 preseason and should have made the roster. There was no  real justification (at least field wise) for keeping Tolzien over him...especially since they knew they were heading into a "rebuilding" year. But there are many things fans don't see beyond the games...so who knows.

  3. Doesn't really sound odd...it's just a boiler plate article about the challenges of a young NFL player...tip-toeing around the idea that maybe Cain isn't quite an NFL level WR. He certainly wouldn't be the first guy like this...the NFL drafts are littered with them...especially in the later rounds. And I think most of us remember Roy Hall...a late-round upside WR who flashed in preseason but wasn't quite there.

I never really got the hype for Cain...and his preseason performance is basically irrelevant at this point. But I hope he can figure it out though...because the more WR talent the better.

    He's NEVER invisible.

Too busy talking about how good he is.

I love his energy, i just wishhe could take a couple "humble pills."  He's gotta be the biggest "me" player on the team.

Flamboyant diva is a great description for him.

But i love the guy too.

Agree...I saw the Holder tweet and I thought why is everyone suddenly talking about Ebron and why is Holder trying so hard to carry his water. And then I saw all of the politickin he's been doing in the media. Definitely sounds like a "me" player. He was basking it in last year (after falling into a perfect situation)...and now he is just a guy on this version of the team...doesn't like it that much...so he's pouting.

I get where he is coming from...it probably would be a sharp adjustment to make...but just keep quiet and play ball. I am guessing his chances of being here next year are dwindling...and I am perfectly fine with that.

Interestingly though...regarding the debate that the offense is being limited for/by JB...here is a player on that offense basically validating that.

I don't know about all that. I think it's pretty much a wash, and they are cherry picking stats a bit.

The last 2 teams we played are bottom 10 in total O. Houston put up almost 400 total yards on us, which is about their norm. You can't really judge the KC game with Mahomes hobbled and their 2 best WRs out. Pitt actually put up more than their average (like 15-20% more), and Denver was only slightly below their average. In terms of pts, Denver and Pitt were 3ish pts below their average (I subtracted the 7 from the pick 6), which is really the only positive. We're still giving up the yards and on the edge.

To be fair...PIT got jobbed out of 4 points on that TD as well.

    Holder would say that.

Pretty sure it’s not Reich’s fault his TE-loving QB retired right before the season started. And it’s definitely not Reich’s fault that Ebron went back to dropping passes at a league-leading rate.

Reich is trying to win games...not justify Ebron’s presence on the roster...or his contract.

But if a QB is really considered 'good' no team would pass on adding them because it is the most important position on the roster.

Yes, the 53 man. But doesn't have to be active. Could be a healthy scratch every week.

Also, its past week four, so claiming order is changed-

"From the first business day after the Super Bowl until the day after the third regular season week, assignments are based on a claiming order that is the same as the order in which clubs selected in that year’s Draft. From the beginning of the fourth regular season weekend through the Super Bowl, assignments are based on the inverse order of their win-loss record."

Yeah...I just think it adds some context. Picking up a QB project who doesn't know your system and having him a use a valuable 53-man roster spot doesn't seem ideal. And a team having him active, as the backup QB I would presume, seems even less likely...since he doesn't know the playbook.

I'm not here to say CK is the next Kurt Warner or anything but I want to dispel a common talking point...

CK clearly isn't good because nobody claimed him on waivers.

It was a couple weeks into the season. Do you really think any NFL team didn't have a roster prepared with a minimum of 2 QB's? You realistically think there were teams in the league sitting on a 1 QB roster saying; 'Quality QB's get cut all the time in this league, lets just wait for waivers to find our backup and hope nothing happens to the only QB on our roster?"

Excellent point...and no one has mentioned this. QBs don’t get signed that often after camp. Teams have their backup and depth in place...guys that know the playbook. And if a team absolutely needed a QB due to injury...they likely prefer QBs that are already familiar with the system if possible.

Also...and I am not sure on this...wouldn’t that claiming team have to carry Kelly on the active roster? That makes even less likely that a team would claim him...same reason why he’s safe on the PS.

  9. At this point last season...I felt strongly that the Colts could/should sweep the rest of the way. Luck was balling, the OL had gelled and the schedule was a pretty easy.

This year...the Colts (obviously) don't have Luck...the OL has started to regress and suffer injuries...and the schedule is going to get tougher after next week (I think NFC is very good this year...so having to play any team that is not ATL, WAS or NYG worries me).

The Colts style of play this year has resulted in a low point differential and most games becoming a coinflip. Right now, they have been on the plus side of it...but as we saw against PIT what the other side looks like. And over the course of a season, those types of outcomes tend to regress to the mean. As of this past week, their pythagorean win expectation for the season would be 8.1 games...(points for) / (points for + points against) * 16 games...basically 8-8.

And you have to factor in not having a reliable kicking game...which is crucial in close games.

Having MIA on the schedule will help...so I am going to say 9-7 at this moment...provided they get some key player back.

I have seen numerous times where teams do not play their key players in the last game of the season when they are out of playoff contention. Nothing is flawed. I can go back to the 1980 up to now and list 100 times where has happen. Maybe the Jags will play their starters if they are out of it, who knows. If I was the HC, I wouldn't play Foles at that point, the guy is made of glass, Hey if they want to risk it, then I could care less.

1980 is a very long time ago. But it seems like back then it would be less likely to be a common practice.

Just so we're clear...the premise is that teams...that are out of playoff contention...are resting good healthy players in the final week of the season (not injured or banged up players). Given that premise...I would actually take that bet that you can't find 100 times where it has happened going back to 1980.

That's 38 seasons of final week games. Let's say on average...there are 16 teams out of the playoff hunt in the final week. So that's 608 times the scenario is present. You are saying it has happened at least 100x...or an average of 2.6 teams each year. So every season...2-3 teams out of it are resting healthy good players. I just don't see it. Even ARI...who was playing for the #1 pick last year didn't rest their healthy good players.

  11. 1 hour ago, 2006Coltsbestever said:

Why would you play Nick Foles or your best defensive players in a meaningless game? That is the better question. If they are out of the playoffs why risk an injury to anyone you have good. That makes no sense especially how injury prone Foles is.

Because they are paying them to play...and you have fans that paid to see them play. Plus, the players don't want to sit on the bench...many of them have incentive clauses in their contracts...not to mention some are playing for a new contract.

Just a quick glance at last season shows that a 5-11 JAC team played all of their starters in a meaningless Week 17 game.

This premise of yours is flawed. Sure...injured players aren't going to push it in that scenario...but healthy players will play.

Assuming we do beat Miami to get to 6-3, I have us going 11-5 if JB is 100% after the Miami game.

    Jags = W (7-3)

    at Houston = L (7-4)

    Tennessee = W (8-4)

    At Bucs = W (9-4)

    at Saints = L (9-5)

    Panthers = W (10-5)

at Jags = W (11-5), reason why I have this a W is because the Jags will have nothing play for IMO, they will be out of it and probably will rest most of their starters. We will need this win to win the division.

If we finish 11-5 we aren't drafting a QB, I don't think at 10-6 we will either, JMO. Why would we? If we finish 8-8 or worse then we will.

I would think drafting a DLineman or 2 and some more pass rushers would be top priority. I am really not high on any of these QB's coming out this year.

I guess if someone wants us to get a QB in the draft after this season than root for us to lose so maybe they get their guy, not much else to say.

Why would a team out of the playoffs rest their starters...especially in the home final? If anything, JAC would get up for that game to play spoilers.

It's hard for me to envision sweeping both TEN and JAC...but not impossible. I also think the end of that schedule with those three against the NFCS is tough scheduling...the NFC is very strong this year.

The 2nd AFC WC is going to be a battle for several teams this year...that much seems apparent.

  13. I'll say "A-" for trading back AND splurging a bit on Houston. I would have liked to see a couple other moves made...but I am sure every team in the NFL could say that. The draft class hasn't been amazing...but fairly solid with contributions from several guys...and upside for the future.

He sort of set the standard for what an "A+" type offseason looked like last year...so I am grading it in that context...with a bit of a curve since he didn't have the same draft assets.

On the financial side...a bit lower...but that's just IMO. Contract structures have been great...but not crazy with how some of that cap space has been used...strictly from a financial standpoint.

A+ We are leading the division right now with a back up QB and we have a ton of very young players contributing in big areas

Sorry for the nitpick...but they are actually not leading the division...they are down one in the win column. They do control their destiny I guess...but it's a bit too early to say that.

  15. Well...one thing would be Doyle's health. He missed a lot of games last year. And for better or worse...he is the TE1 in this system because he can block and has sure hands...and that means less chances for Ebron.

But I think the other big part is no Luck and playcalling.  Reich was able to scheme Ebron wide open and Luck would find him through the progressions...those TE corner routes were absolutely deadly with Luck's touch and accuracy. So take away Luck and a year of film...and you have some combination of teams paying more attention to Ebron and JB not finding him like Luck did.

Ultimately, like some warned before the season, regression for Ebron was a likely outcome...especially on TDs.

Unfortunately his drops returned again this year...and this area hasn't improved. He's a good player...he's just not a great player that you build around. And he's probably not one the Colts should commit to after this season unless he tests FA and Ballard can get him back on a good deal. Ebron is a good example of why you have to be careful about extending guys after a year. There were people that wanted to give him a monster extension before this season started.

Personally, I want TE1 type that can do more than Doyle. Those are typically in the draft. Need that time machine to go back and make Ballard draft Kittle instead of Banner or Stewart.

  16. He nailed a 51 yarder the week before. Would have been nice if he would have hit game-winner on Sunday...but I hate when games come down to a kick...on either side.

What would people be saying...if he missed that DEN kick and hit the kick against PIT?

  17. 5 hours ago, Myles said:

That is not true.   The effect of hitting the ground 2 feet before the ball will usually end up in a crazy kick.

I typically blame the color of the tee when my driver takes a big divot out of the tee box.

    Well we've drafted 3 WRs

Cain - 6th rounder coming off of a torn ACL. Impressed in both training camps, but hasn't done much. Jury's still out, but not looking great so far. Even if he is a miss I wouldn't say missing on a 6th round WR means we're bad at drafting WRs

Fountain - 5th rounder, out for year, on the PS as a rookie. Impressed in camp, but hasn't played much at all. The jury is still out with him too. Again, even if he is a miss I wouldn't say missing on a 5th round WR means we're bad at drafting WRs.

Campbell - 2nd rounder rookie, our only high WR draft pick in the Ballard regime. Has injury issues, and wasn't great early in the year, but has insane speed and potential. We saw just a little bit of that against the Steelers. Potentially has fumble issues though. Jury's still out.

I look at the entirety of WR acquisitions...and it leaves a lot to be desired. Injuries aside...it has been Ballard's one questionable area.

FA - Aiken (awful), Grant (ugh), Funchess (we will see...I am never expected much), Pascal (great pickup), Inman (fantastic...but an in-season street FA signing)

Draft - Cain (doesn't look like he belongs), Fountain (raw and then got hurt), Campbell (loved the pick)

I mean...in three offseasons...it's just not a strong group overall. I do hope they use an early pick next year in what is supposed to be a very good group...and look at someone via trade. Two legit WRs paired with Campbell and Pascal is a decent foundation...as Hilton heads into the latter years of his career.

Yeah...I was going to put SSS alert at the beginning...but I didn't mean to draw a definitive conclusion...it was more meant to show yet another data point in a season-long trend. The QB changed...but the outcomes largely stayed the same.

What I want to know is, why did it take Elberflus 3 ENTIRE QUARTERS to figure out that the RB pass was absolutely destroying the defense before he made any adjustment???

It's partly the scheme...Colts have struggled with pass-catching backs since the beginning of last year.

But Samuels only got 5.5 yds/catch and PIT had less than 200 yards passing. I think it "worked" for the most part...though I do agree that they should have at least tempted Rudolph to throw a duck or two downfield.

IMO, letting that backup RB gash them for 73 yards on 12 carries was a bigger issue.

  21. As for Hoyer impressions (or "JB vs Hoyer.....vs Kelly'" as this thread probably should be called)...let me just say that I am not sold on either one.

But for weeks now, passing TDs and TD:INT ratio have been the rallying cries of many in favor of JB.

Well, Hoyer had 3 passing TDs this game...despite only having passing 168 yards. This was driven by a completely unsustainable TD %...much like JB early in the season.

TD distribution in this system skews to passing TDs...based on playcalling and circumstance. When the Colts get close to the EZ, Reich call pass plays. I think they ran pass plays on something like 70% of their RZ plays Sunday (if you count JB and Hoyer scrambles that were meant to be pass plays).

And when he calls runs close to the EZ...the Colts have been one of the worst teams in the NFL at success rate and YPC all season. I don't know why this is...but hopefully they can get it fixed. If they weren't so bad at it...some of those passing TDs would be rushing TDs at this point...and they probably would have run as many pass plays.

Regardless, you have two different QBs in the same system with very similar TD and RZ efficiency results. And despite Hoyer's boneheaded throw...his TD:INT ratio was still 3:1...which if extrapolated out to 14 TDs...it's probably like 14:4 or 14:5...vs JB's 14:3.

So my impressions of Hoyer is that the offense was pretty damn similar. That's a good thing short-term...but not long-term.

This is such a good point. He wasn’t in long and still had 59 yards. I agree he might of had another 300 yard game.

He was in until the 11:00 mark of the 2nd quarter...that's more than 1/4 of the game. I guess it's possible...but he was on pace for season average at that point.
