These are the guys behind the Redskins/LaVarr Arrington Contract dispute from 2003, in which the agents didnt even read the contract that they had their player sign, only to find out that the Redskins failed to include a $6.5M bonus on the contract. This lead to one of the top agents (and the brother of Hankins agent) being suspended by the NFLPA for 2 years for negligence. Doesnt get much more ignorant than that my friend.

There is a reason they went from dozens of players, and several high profile guys (Charles Woodson, Orlando Pace, Kellen Winslow just to name a few), to reportedly only representing 4 current NFL players (soon to be 5 as they just roped in CB Jourdan Lewis). The real thing that should be hard to believe is that Hankins chose to be represented by these guys and is still sticking with them.

Hahaha woww that's hilarious!! They have 4 players hahaha!! That's unfortunate that they got Jordan Lewis tho hopefully he moves on after the domestic stuff passes.

This situation is starting to give Hankins the reputation of caring about a few more dollars than anything else.  Most players his age are concerned about building a career, and picking a team that he can play well with enhances a players career more than anything.

If he is picking a team based upon the absolute most dollars he can get in this current contract, than he is thinking about cashing in on a career that he feels might be short term.  If I was a GM, I'd be concerned about that.

I understand injury and wanting some guaranteed money, but a 25 year old player has to think about which team would provide him the best opportunity to play well because it also has a huge impact on the amount of total dollars a player can earn over an entire career.

Yea him and his agent are coming off a bit shady. Dam is he talented tho

    Ignore what?

If you want to build and maintain good roster, you have to stack good drafts on top of each other. It's proven by history. You can add building pieces in FA, but they have to be the right pieces at the right time for the right cost. Adding Hankins on a one year prove-it deal doesn't exactly change the Colts from being a fringe playoff team to a title contender.

In Ballard's interview with Peter King (I believe), he spoke about being disciplined. He basically said that if they've decided they're willing to spend X amount on a guy, it's tempting to say 'well, we'll give him an extra million or two to get him,' but they're committed to being disciplined, and it requires restraint. Restraint is a defining characteristic of perennially contending programs.

Ignoring Grigsons mistakes. We bare the burden of his F ups even tho he's gone. Im all for moving on but I acknowledge that were behind as far as talent comparative to contending teams. True, adding Hankins doesn't guarantee any Lombardis, but he could've been a foundational piece to build our D around. I like what CB said and if Hankins was playing that game of trying to get more then what he's worth then so be it, I just can't comprehend what his agent is thinking if he's still playing games with teams a month into FA

The thing is that his agent is notorious for this kind of behavior. He is part of a what was a popular agency in the early 2000's and fell off because they constantly over valued their players and never budged on their stances. Its not far fetched to believe that we may have offered that 6-8 Million that you seem to think would have sealed the deal, and his agent is still stuck on that 10 Million or more price tag that he started with. This is nothing new, and there are plenty of stories out there saying that his agent is the problem.

I've seen those stories didn't give them a read but I'll take your word. I guess its so hard for me to believe because that is complete ignorance on his agents part. If they're stuck on 10 mil he won't even get signed

We have a mauler on the roster right now.

His name is Denzelle Good.      He may,  or may not be the answer.

Either way,  he's 355, and I'd like to see LESS of him.    Like 335 or so.

Soooo true about Good. His weight should've been addressed year 1 but if he comes into training camp at 330-335 that makes the competition at RG extra juicy

It is like coming back from a deficit, can't do it all in one shot. It has to happen little by little.

Yet you are still in the deficit. No need to panic, but if you dont play with urgency and efficiency that lead will do nothing but grow.

No one knows what he was asking for.   I'm sure he would have signed if a nonsense number was thrown out

I get you, you think he came to Indy thinking we might be the team he gets to over pay for him. Makes sense, but so deep into FA idk how this mans agent thinks he still has leverage.

I disagree with all of this. You can't undo the past. All you can do is get it right moving forward. Having a sense of desperation because Grigson didn't do a good job will lead to bad decision making. You don't make up for Grigson's mistake, you just make better decisions in the future.

As for Hankins filling a need, I think we all agree he would represent a notable upgrade at NT. That doesn't mean you just pay him whatever he asks for, even if you have the cap space. Maximize your resources. That's a staple of good team building.

We could ignore it all we want but in reality we have one of the worst rosters in the league. How many drafts are we willing to wait before we can field a competitive team. I dont think its desperate at all to add a few building pieces through FA when your a team with more then enough resources and too many needs to fill through 2-3 drafts. I'm not saying over pay anyone but with the lack of activity Hankins has I feel, yes I'm speculating, he could've been had for a reasonable deal like 1 year 8 mil.

Every good team does it through the draft, with respect to the proven process of building and maintaining a good roster. There absolutely is a formula, and it's held true over the last 25 years. There are no exceptions to it; there are no good teams that have been built without drafting well over multiple seasons. The fact that your team hasn't done a good job of executing the formula in recent years isn't an excuse for dismissing the formula entirely.

Ballard's job is to draft well, and supplement the draft in other ways. He's clearly not resistant to free agency as a way to supplement the roster. But fiscal restraint is important, especially in a league with a hard salary cap.

And while we don't know exactly what happened, the fact that the Colts had Hankins in for a visit means they strongly considered him. They also likely knew what his desired salary range was when they invited him, and were somewhat open to it, otherwise it's just a waste of time. It's not likely that they arranged this visit only to lowball him. Most likely, the visit didn't go well for some other reason than money.

What does that equation look like?

    Draft+well=good team

To me that's less of a formula and more of a given, common knowledge. Maybe I lead you to believe that I think a team can be built purely through FA, and clearly that is not true. The draft is key, but when your 3 years behind on 1st round picks with money to spend that kinda mixes up the formula. That's an added variable that makes this a difficult process. I agree it takes multiple years of drafting well, but we also have to make up for Grigsons incompetence. Hankins would've provided 1 less need which is pretty crucial

Funny Tsizzle, we also know (rumours) what the super low ball Giant offer is. Get a grip.

Hahahah Tsizzle. Why you hating? Cuz I'm on fire:Nuke:

Never gave a #, never even said the Giants low balled I said we did. Giants made an offer that got rejected, Hankins stated his asking price and that wasn't happening. Maybe I'm just that much smarter then you, but I can figure out that this is going to meet in the middle somewhere. I know CB knew this as well, and yet we still couldn't make it happen. Sure other factors and variables could've been in play as well, but if it came down to purely money then why even bring him in when we know where this is ganna land.

I'm pretty sure we can add Harrison to that list soon but so far he's had only 1 (really) good year. Not worth the money yet though he'll likely be that.

As Superman said, every penny can be rolled over. But by the time season is over, it will probably be closer to 15M than 30M.

Hmmm, interesting..... that would give us alot of cash for next year. But who knows what FA will look like next Year, still want Hankins

How do you know they didn't offer him $6-8m?

How do you know they didn't talk about $6-8m, but then showed up and demanded $10m?

How do you know they didn't have an agreement in principle, but he failed his physical?

How do you know he didn't show up two hours late to their meeting?

I'll say again, you don't know what happened, or why.

Good teams do build through the draft, without exception. Teams that are close to SB contention reach out for big players in free agency with success, but that's only after they already have a strong core in place.

And Hankins is VERY limited as a pass rusher, and would be most beneficial on early downs, not sub packages. I have no problem with him in that role, based on what I know, but I'm not interested in seeing the Colts bow to his demands without regard for market value.

I'm already sorry we didn't sign Bennie Logan. But I'm over it.

    Bennie would've been Nice:(

Any of those scenarios could've happened but more then likely it was much simpler. There's no formula to building a team, its not a cookie cutter process. Every team does it there own way, many have success building through the draft and then just keeping there own. When your GM shizz the bed with 3 1st round picks in a row its really hard to just rely on building through the draft. The money is there because we have no young players getting max contracts and none on the horizon coming up. Hankins hasn't been very productive as a pass rusher the past 2 years I'll give u that, 2014 had 7 sacks which is very impressive.

  13. Just now, Finball said:

Linval Joseph (ironically signed from the Giants) is pretty much the only big money interior lineman who has been worth the contract he got in FA and switched teams.

Free agency can be very useful tool but pretty much every SB-caliber teams foundation is built through the draft. I'd rather use free agency (as in going after bigger fishes) after we've gotten some young foundational pieces on defense. Until then, I'd prefer to carry over cap space. Would be more left when we really want to use it for pieceor two to complete the roster.

Damon Harrison too. But if we do let all 30 mil roll over next year, how much of that actually becomes usable cap space? Is it a percentage of it or does all 30 roll over? If that's the case then I'm cool with saving, but if we lose a percentage then what's the point.

  14. 1 minute ago, Superman said:

I personally will. I don't want the GM overpaying players out of a sense of desperation. I mostly disagree with everything you posted in that previous post, and the point is that good teams build through the draft. They don't overpay two down run defenders a month into free agency.

There's something going on with Hankins, and I'd just as soon rather not be mixed up in it.

How is 6-8 mil over paying Hankins? Before FA started that was his value, he's hurt his stock by being greedy but he's still worth somewhere in between. God I hate That excuse, "good teams build through the draft." Good teams improve their roster any way any how and by any means. Hankins has pass rush ability, you reading to much into PFF statistics last year I'm sure. Hankins will be had for a bargain price and we will be sorry

I can appreciate Ballard NOT overpaying for a guy. it would have been easy for him to give him a big deal and look good but he holds his ground and that is very encouraging

Idk how this is encouraging. Forget the fact that the guy would've helped our football Team, it shows how tight CB really is with this money. I'm hoping that he's just playing it safe his 1st year, but he crapped the bed with this one. We knew Hankins asking price, we brought him in for a visit, and we still low ball?

  16. So disappointed in CB with this one. We get it you dont want to over spend or get trapped in long term contracts, but for F sakes man you dont build your castle with sticks and mud!!! Stop penny saving and nickle and diming and improve this dam roster. Who knows what FA is going to look like next year, who knows who we could even bring in for a visit. We had a chance to sign one of the better FAs for a more then reasonable deal I'm sure but CBs too worried about not repeating Ryan Grigsons mistakes. Terrible NT class in the draft, this will be a huge problem next year. God another year of David Parry getting punked hahaha

I think it's going to take a pretty solid offer from the Colts to lure Hankins away from the Giants to be honest.  There's a nice amount of beef and talent in that Giants D and their offense has some good parts too.  It's a good situation and it's always great to stay where you're respected.  In my mind to leave that I'm sure he's looking to see a nice sized bag of cash.  Not sure how motivated Chris B is on the financial side of things which is why I think he'll stay in New York.

Not nearly as much as he was asking for. He could be had for 6-7 mil but the question is if CB is willing to pay that. If he doesn't like NYs offer he's not ganna take it until he absolutely has to. Money talks, he'd leave NY in a heart beat for the right offer.

    Reddick, cool.

I'd like Jordan Willis over Rivers if he's available. If not I'm okay with Rivers or Watt.

    Love Jourdan Lewis.

I'd take Wilson over Griffin. Strength can grow, especially if he's an underclassman.

And I'd take Johnson over Woods due to our needs being more towards the FS than the SS right now.

    Other than that, pretty good.

Hmm idk, Willis was definitely my 3rd option and I'd love to have him at that spot if my guys aren't there but I think Rivers has a higher upside moves more fluidly with great length.Willis and Watt is a toss up to me. Dont mind Wilson at all but I'd recommend a watch of Shaquill. Ganna have to go back and watch full games but it was worth it to me. Xavier has the ball skills and athleticism to play FS and why I give him the edge is he is a much better tackler then JJ. Doesn't give the versatility to play corner, but im not worried about that.

    Thanks for the feedback!!

I like it. I would prefer Howard Wilson where ever you want to take him. I think you had him as an alternate. He can do it all and could be a steal in this loaded class. I think if he went back to schools he'd be a 1st round pick next year. He will need a little time He's one of my favorite CB's outside the top 50.

I'm not complaining and I would love all the D but I think we stumble across at least one OL somewhere. I like dropping back day 3 to add later picks. Hop is one of my favorite small school RB's.

Good point about Wilson he might have as much potential as anyone. I'm a big fan of Shaquill, why I give him the slit edge is 1. Hes the better athlete 2. He already has his long frame filled out 3. Although its very debatable, to me Griffin is the better tackler but Wilson is more then solid I just worry about his skinny frame.

Hmm So you'd prefer a later round OL? I mean it wouldn't hurt at all and maybe we hit it big, but I'm just not sure a late round G or T even competes with this class being so bad. To me if we go OL it probably should be rounds 1 or 2. I'm optimistic with Haeg and Clark being coached for a 2nd year by Philbin and I like how these guys are working out and lifting together all 5 becoming a unit.

Thanks for the feedback man!! Bleed blue

I do. I think he could be the best pass-rusher in this draft. I think the dominance he displayed in college was amazing when it comes to pass rushing  - 27% pressure on passing downs. That's insane!!! That was first in the country and the average for pass-rushers is 10%. He has the best burst off the ball in this class and he has a nice repertoire of moves, combined with good strength.I think his run-defense problems are way overblown. He's not bad run-defender. Alabama just had better ones and put them in on first and second down.

But I do think there are a lot of question marks about him. He can very easily turn out to be a Randy Gregory type of a bust. He's reportedly failed 7(SEVEN!!!!!!) drug tests in Alabama. wth? How can someone fail 7 tests, never be suspended or thrown out of the football program? I don't get it. This doesn't seem to be a regular guy who once or twice smoked pot and got caught. He got caught again and again and again and again ... AND AGAIN... AND AGAIN... AND AGAIN. He seems to not have the required self-control and presence of mind to not jeopardize his multi-million dollar future for the sake of having fun. I have no idea how a GM can draft him early and invest millions in him at this point. I personally wouldn't draft him in the first two days form what I know, even though I think he's clearly a first round talent. There is no reason to knock his talent, when it's not the problem. The problem is what's between his ears.

College statistics dont tell the full story. He was and can be a productive pass rusher but he'll never be a dominant player. His run D is rightful criticized. Lacks strength at POA to maintain gap integrity and once hands get put on him he struggles to disengage. Fully agree on the off field stuff.

  21. Im down to trade back in the 1st round, but I'm trying out different trades in other rounds to get a feel of what would be best. I do think we trade back at some point throughout the draft.

Round 1: Haason Reddick, if we keep this pick and he's still here it wouldn't make sense to pass him up. Best player available at our biggest need IMO.

Alternative: Ruben Foster, ILBs aren't valued liked they should be, pass rushers and cover guys get overvalued. Ruben probably won't be here but if he is again a no brainer.

Round 2: Trade w/ Seattle for comp. 3

Pick: Derek Rivers, day 1 situational edge rusher with rare size/strength/speed combo. Uses hands well but also bends the corner as well as smaller prospects. Level of competition is what causes him to land here.

Alternative: TJ Watt, may go before this but has only 1 year of experience on defense. Uses leverage and long arms to get into linemens chest. Needs more strength to disengage quicker and more effectively. Comes in on sub packages year 1 but turns into an every down player sooner then later.

Round 3: Jordan Lewis, should've gone a round earlier but domestic case kills him. Best slot corner in class and is more then capable of being our #2.

Alternative: Cameron Sutton, with a full season last year Sutton goes much higher. Inside, outside cb, and safety with return ability.

Round 3* Sea pick: Shaquill Griffin, after impressing at the combine I had to go back and watch his tape. Physical corner who tackles well and has great ball skills. 15 PBU and 4 picks in 2016(13,3 in 2015). Long arms and strong frame is ideal for our press scheme. Scouts before the combine had major concerns of his deep speed, on tape he has gotten beat deep but from the big plays I saw it was miss communication or bitting on a double move.

Alternative: Howard Wilson, underclassmen with alot of room to grow. Great length with smooth hips and nice foot work. Tackled really well in college, but strength might be an issue in the NFL.

Round 4: Xavier Woods, rangy safety with great instincts. One of the better tackling/hitting safeties in the class. May go earlier but depth of safety in the draft could have him fall here.

Alternative: John Johnson, former corner with the ideal ball skills for a FS who can also play the slot. Didn't impress with his 40 but shows explosion and quick twitch with his vertical and 3 cone.

Round 4: Alex Anzalone, very talented linebacker who unfortunately has a problem with injuries. Could go higher, but could easily fall here with his history.

Alternative: Anthony Walker Jr., highly criticized for gaining muscle weight and being less productive this year. Im in the process of watching both 2015 and 2016, so far his 16 tape seems solid but there must be a reason he's falling down boards.

Round 4: Grover Stewart, 6'4 340 who I've had my eyes on for a while. Then my man has his pro day and the big fella runs a 5.06. Small school prospect with needed polish, but he's shooting up boards. Probably beats out any NT we have on the roster year 1 with the sky as the limit.

Alternative: Stevie T, the better option if were looking for a NT to start right away. 25 year old rookie but plays like it with polished technique and great hand usage. Lacks ideal length

Round 5: trade back 5 spots for a later 6th

Pick: DeAngelo Henderson, my favorite sleeper back this year. Best comp I've seen is to Brandon Oliver from the LACs. Short but stout and uses that great leverage and thickness to overpower bigger and heavier tacklers. By no means an every down back, but the ideal change of pace who can catch and block as well as return kicks.

Alternative: Aaron Jones, very productive back but comes with serious lower body injuries. Versatility to run inside and outside and catches the ball extremely well.

Round 6: Roderick Henderson, another small school NT who I've become a huge fan of. 6'1 340 pounds after losing 15 since the end of the season. Shows great movement for such a big man on film and proves it with a 5.22 and 1.79 10 yard split. Great at winning inside leverage and pushing or closing a gap as well as splitting double teams.

Alternative: Eli Ankou, a guy we've already worked out so I had to take a look. I really like these late round sleeper NTs and I'd personally love to grab 2. Al Woods is more of a 3 tech and David Parry is David Parry.
