They actually only extended his contract one year.  Next year is a contract year for Brissett.

That's not committment.  That's keeping him in house for another year so a rookie can learn behind him.  This is exactly like what Andy Reed did with Pat Mahomes.  Pat Mahomes sat a year behind Alex Smith.

    Agree 100%

This is precisely the reason why I don't think they're in a good place.

4 positions aren't a lot numerically but they're probably the most difficult spots to actually fill whilst also being amongst the positions with the greatest impact on results.

Yes I agree. The positions are the most important but I don't know if you follow the draft or College football but this class is loaded with depth that we need. A lot of Qbs, WR, and DE. It's about find the best fit for the team and I'm very confident Ballard can do it. He proved he is able to draft. Now if it was Grigs id be terrified.

true, but you're asking to catch Lightning in a bottle.  It can be done for sure.  But its not a guarantee. Also, the question is too, does Irsay show patience and give Ballard time to find one, which could take years.  I'd guess yes, but you never know

Yes, not a gurantee and if Irsay showed much patience to Grigs he will give time to Ballard. Plus no one can blame Ballard or Reich when Luck abruptly retired. Also, with Ballard personally going to Utah to scout Love you know he's in Qb market. Also, Hoyer needs to be upgraded. Dude sucks big time

i see several that could be really good.  remember mahomes, watson and jackson were not all seen as unanimous great picks leading up to the draft

all three of them were thought to be boom or bust in the pros

Very true. Also big thing with that is they all sat in that 1st year. They did play in some of the games that 1st year but was able to Develop the proper way

I trust Ballard but I think franchise QB is going to be extremely difficult.  I'm not seeing anyone that truly stands out to me that is coming out this year.

I agree getting a Qb is tough but I think Ballard and his drafting philosphy will find the right one. I personally hope he gets Love. He has all the traits but just needs a year to be fully developed correctly and not rushed. I think Colts is perfect because they have Brisett for one more year and can take their time to mold him like Mahomes and Watson did.

  6. 1. The division isn't that scary. Houston is the clear leader but has traded future 1st rounders where that will haunt them in the future and they could barely beat the Colts with all the injuries. Jacksonville still doesn't have their future Qb and paid Nick Foles a butt ton of money and will and have lost defensive players. Titans barely beat the Colts and they have no solution to their Qb as well.

    2. The Colts roster do have holes but not many. The main issues are Qb, WR, DT, DE and Kicker.

    3. The 2020 draft is set up well for the Colts and at the most perfect time. The WR depth is incredible where I could see Ballard grabbing 2 WR because value will fall due to all the WR talent. Also, there is good depth at DE and Qb as well where I could see Ballard drafting a guy like Love to develop behind Brissett for a year and drafting another DE since Sheard is a free agent and Houston has 1 more year with the Colts.

    4. The cap situation is amazing and will be able to keep all our young core of players together since we don't have our franchise Qb right now. This is the thing I look at that excites me at our future. Ballard is so good at drafting and was one of the main person that helped Scout Mahomes where I have no doubt that Ballard can find us that guy. Just imagine if Ballard can get the Colts a Franchise Qb and WR in this class this team could be dominant for 10 plus years due to possibly having a Qb and WR on rookie contacts.

I know #4 is a bunch of what ifs but I have Ballard's trust since he has proven he can draft so well.

  7. Ballard says he LOVES players who have great leadership and background and so many people rave about him and his work ethic. He is a small school with coaching not being that great compared to the top college coaches or NFL. He literally has all the traits to a Franchise Qb. This kid killed it last year when he had some talent and his coaches from last year. This year he had new coaches and new players so his play is taking a dive. I'll say this. If Ballard does draft him he will sit a year like Mahomes did and develop and be ready for the 2021 season. Perfectly fine with that as well.

These guys make it seem like it’s easy to fine and MVP qb, like how long did teams have to lose and how many bust first round pick QBs before they land a good QB then when they get them what have they done other put stats up ?

Actually Houston, Chiefs, and Ravens all moved up to draft there Qbs. It's all about find the right Qb for your system. Develop and make sure the team is patient.

Not every team gets a Luck, Watson, Mahomes. Sometimes you get Alex Smith, go win.

I agree you, go win. But Frank Reich and Ballard will not be satisfied and will not be risked to lose there jobs in the long run. Chiefs, Ravens and Houston all made bold moves to draft Qb's and so far it's worked. Ballard obviously believes in depth as well and probably realized Hoyer aint a good back up. So i almost gurantee this coming year he's focused on some Qbs. Also another telling statement is Ballard and Frank have mentioned Jacoby is an Exceptional Leader. Agree, but they never mention on how he has these skills or things like that. They knowhis play is not Franchise Qb worthy

I’d agree with much of this article. I would carve out the caveat that the team has been without a legit #2,3 receiver, Ebron has been back to his norm with drops and TY has missed 3 games plus he wasn’t right in this game and you were missing Mack, although Williams filled in pretty nicely.

This team is missing more than play from the QB, and he looks very one dimensional. While being a solid caretaker of the football, he has zero vision past his first and limited times, maybe a second one. I am completely surprised he has looked as pedestrian as he has so far as a starter this year. He couldn’t throw a guy open if his mother’s life was on the line, he is that bad at anticipation. Kelly may be no better but we’ve seen his arm, we’ve seen his legs, and if he has the “mental” side right, he has many pluses in his game.

I think we can pretty much rule out JB as the future in what we’ve all seen so far this year. We know that his back up journeyman guy is bad but we’ve not seen Kelly fire live bullets yet. I honestly think this is the stretch to see if Kelly has enough to allow the Colts to avoid needing to trade up draft capital and focus on either a RT, WR, or pass rusher from any spot along the line because yuk, we have both little rush nor do we have the DC who shows creativity with what he has. Those 3 man rush attempts were borderline criminal while the opposing QB sat at his table, cut up his steak and then threw the ball to about anyone he wanted.

The team is not in complete synch and it smells just a tad better than a Pagano led team.https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2863797-jacoby-brissett-holding-back-colts-is-present-future-problem-for-indianapolis

I agree with the article. Not all the blame is on Jacoby but he is not the future. Jacoby Brisett is an Alex Smith. Good enough to win games and a good game manager. He sure can get you to the playoffs but won't win any games for the Colts. Now my question is will Ballard realize this year in this draft and get a developmental Qb to sit under Jacoby for another year. My hope is he drafts Jordan Love. Easily attenable for them to get in the draft. He has all the tools in a Franchise Qb but needs to sit a year to develop. I hope this is the route he takes.

  11. This extra pick could play huge dividends in 2020. To be real Washington is going to be a top 3 pick next year and that gives Ballard lots of ammo to play with.

Option 1- Even though Ballard is known not to trade up but could he be all in for a blue chip prospects they fall in love with and package their 2 seconds to move up. Does he use the ammo to draft a potential Qb in a deep Qb class.

Option 2- he could also do like last year and trade back again to gather more picks for the future.

All is unknown right now but that pick i think is going to be Huge!!! Time will tell

  12. JB is a very solid Qb. I'm very grateful we have him as our QB but you have to keep things real. He's a solid starter and and not a franchise QB. He doesn't throw receivers open, he doesn't read the field as well and isn't game changing. Not a knock on JB but we got so used to what Luck can do and realize not many Qb's can do what Luck did. I'll say this. Colts fan need to realize Ballard and his scouts are studying this years Qb's. He realizes in the future you can't pay top dollar to a solid starter and risk letting other players walk. Don't be surprised if this is a KC thing where they move up with with their 2 seconds to get a qb to develop with the 1 year they have JB for and have a new Qb on an affordable rookie contract.

Okereke has looked horrible. He is not replacing walker. He is clearly not ready yet.

I don't see Okereke replacing Walker this year as well unless he improves. But ill say he does have the tools and has shown flashes. He just hasn't been as instinctive which should come in time. My thing with with Walker is he's been missing so many tackles this year and coverage is a huge liability.

  14. All players develop at their own pace. Khari, is playing really well. Rock, is playing solid for a rookie but is also playing one of the hardest positions in the NFL and adjusting to playing Zone scheme. Campbell had no training camp and is still getting his feet wet and Okereke didnt even start week 1. Still to early to judge anything. Some people need to RELAX.

Wow if he only  misses two games.

I called that. Previous forum topic, people were freaking out and I stated meniscus aren't really that bad of an injury. I thought texans was a possibility but had my money on the Denver game but with that I think Texans game it is

  16. I personally hope it's Jordan Love. He's a possibility to move up into late 1st and grab him. That means giving up a second but his raw talent is so good. He's from a small school and isn't well developed as the others so I'd have Jacoby still run the show next year and have Love develop like Mahomes did in 2017 and hopefully in 2021 he takes over. That's my opinion but we shall see. I'm also one of the believers that Luck will miss the NFL and comes back next year. Not saying im praying for that but that's just what my gut tells me.

You are out of your mind  if you think AC lands that kind of contract. If CB gives that kind of money, he better be the top 1-2 LT in the league and AC isn’t that guy. Please put down the liquor, it’s too early for that. Lol

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/left-tackle/

What you dont understand is that the salary cap goes up every year and having a premium LT is huge. Ask many teams around the league. Trent Brown who just got paid by the Raiders is making 16.5 million and he's playing RT. Am I saying Ballard will pay that amount in the 15+ mil range who knows, will Castonzo do a home town discount to stay who truly knows on that, it's his last big contract so anything can happen. But I gurantee you someone in the league will easily make him the highest paid LT and that could be in the 17 mil range.

  18. People need to slow it down on the Ballard comments.  He even stated that the team is still really young and need time.

The guy got here in 2017 and drafted Hooker, Mack, Walker and Wilson and that's not with his own chosen scouts. I'm not crowning anything special with Walker and Wilson but they're starting/depth guys that was well needed on this team.

In 2018, Ballard drafted Nelson, Leonard and Smith. Guys that are playing really well and it's only the start of their 2nd season. Along with that he drafted Turay who has flashed but is a project, Lewis which injuries have plagued him so far and got good rb depth in Wilkins and Hines. Also got Cain, nothing spectacular but coming of ACL and is in his rookie season so can't be judged.

2019, he drafted Campbell, Rock, Okereke and Whillis which I think are going to be good. They have shown flashes but need to develop more. They're rookies and need time and experience. Not all players drafted are Big Q and Leonard.

2020 has 3 picks set up in the top 50 with a very good draft class and many Qb prospects.

Free agents/Waiver/trades- Ebron, Autry, Kenny moore, Glowinski, Desir and Brissett.

The thing that is killing this team is the Ex Franchise Qb whom was a Generational Talent left his team weeks before the season. He made everyone's job easier including the defense. Not taking jabs at Jacoby because he's played well but he did things that most Qb's couldn't do and you can't blame Ballard for that. Especially him giving a top O-line and a really good Rb.

Hold on, you thinking 15/yr or total contract? Either one I’d say is off base.  He is finishing up a average of 10 million/yr 4 yr deal. I’d say he gets something right back in that range for. 3 years (3 for 30 with 13 guaranteed). This allows him to remain a colt for life if he continues to play solid enough and it allows the colts to part ways after 2021 with little impact if he plays poorly next season.

Of course all this is predicated on does AC pick it up and knock off all the rust?  Seems like he has played sluggish before in the first few games and then turned it up in the season. Does CB see a downturn in AC enough to say thanks but we move on to the draft because he sees a few players in his drafting range that could be potential replacement LT’s? Is there another, younger LT coming out in the FA market after this season? So much of what happens with AC in his next contract is determined by what AC looks like over the course of the season. It’s a shame we didn’t pick a possible LT in this draft, I’m not sure Barton would be in line for a starters role at LT here but I wished we would have taken a 3 or 4th rounder to groom. It’s almost as if CB painted himself in a corner and given AC full leverage on an extension. Hopefully, AC balls out, signs a reasonable 3 yr deal and rides off into the sun like Tarik did and still playing at a high enough level.

3 year deal with each year being in the 15+ mil range. I'm assuming 17 to 18 mil a year

Castonzo is pretty good.   LTs are kinda like QBs.  There are only a dozen to 15 or so that are worth a crap.  IMO AC is one of those.

He's not great, but you would have to be sure you had something to be willing to replace him.

Castonzo is graded out as our best lineman so far and ranked as a top 5 OT. He stays healthy and durable. I agree 100%. He isn't Elite but he far better than average and the Oline struggled last year when he was out those 4 games. I don't get how people trash him when he's a proven durable LT in a league where almost every other team is struggling to get a LT.
