They are not easy to find. But they are not impossible to find either. But again... this is not just about the QB. We are lacking talent at the most important positions in football. Luck's retirement has nothing to do with that.

The problem of this team is not just the QB. We are devoid of talent at some of the most important positions in football - QB, WR, DE, LT, CB, TE... And it will be 3 years after Luck retired in August. So yeah. That's plenty of time to address QB.

No idea if you consider me Ballard supporter but I think I have a balanced view of his tenure... so I will respond to the questions you posed - how do we know he isn't a middle of the road GM kind of flailing around - he might be middle of the road GM. I don't think he's flailing around. I think he's doing exactly what his philosophy is telling him he should do. How do we know - because he's told us so and almost every move he makes confirms that he's going according to his plan. NOW... I have big problems with some of his stated philosophies and plans(and I love some other philosophies), but IMO it's pretty easy to see that he actually knows what he's doing. In most cases Ballard gets outbid for players. This is part of his stated philosophy - he sets a value he won't go over, and doesn't get over it. We can have a problem with that but it is what it is... Also I wouldn't say every other GM is dopey or spends too much money. I think each signing should be judged individually. For some of them IMO Ballard is making the right decision and sets the right price, for others not so much... For the offensive FAs, IMO the state of our QB position is pretty important aspect of players' decisions. We just cannot expect many offensive weapons who have other options to choose the team with Sam Ehlinger as their QB1. It's just won't happen unless we overpay... and Ballard almost never overpays for outside FAs. He's not. I don't hold Ballard on pedestal. Yep, agreed... we have a lot of roster spots to fill... and we have some huge holes in some of the most important and respectively most expensive positions... That's why we have tons of capspace. We are currently paying 1.5M for QBs, 0 for LT, under 5M for DEs, under 15M for the entire DB group, 7-8M for the entire WR group... Those are the most important positions in football and we are paying under 30M for them combined.

Yeah, Grigson has his own sins and will carry his own cross. I can understand being lenient toward new management for a year or two after taking on the team that was in shambles and totally devoid of talent, but we are way past the time Ballard can use Grigson or Luck's retirement as excuses for the situation his team is in.

Like I said earlier - if you have an offensive weapon looking for a 1 year prove it deal, convicing him to sign with the team that has Sam Ehlinger as their current QB1, is not going to be easy. Our lack of QB is working against us in FA right now. Players will either not want to come to Indy, or will want massive overpayment so they mitigate their risk of being stuck on a team without a good QB to pass them the ball.

Better value than most DL and OL signings so far.

I don't have a problem with bargain bin shopping, what I don't want us to do is trash bin rummaging. This is what he did last season - he didn't go for the top FA, he didn't go for the mid-tier FA... he went for the trash that nobody wanted - Rochell, Tevi, Davenport... of all FAs he signed last year, only Fisher played snaps of any significance and you can argue just how well he played... I think the most crucial decision of this off-season is whether or not Ballard will continue bandaiding or will he re-focus himself towards securing a long-term future for this team at the QB spot. I am willing to forgive almost everything else he does or doesn't do in FA, as long as he makes the right decision on the path we take for QB. In fact... I prefer him to save money and assets for the timeline of the new QB, rather than go bonkers in FA now on a team that has no chance for legitimate contention.

That's a clearcut case of selection bias. The ones with the strongest feelings will be the ones most likely to call. I don't have strong feelings about us spending this year, so I wouldn't call a radio show almost whatever we do.
