    22/32 options were picked up/extended

    3/22 were extended

22 is a decent number but 3 out of 22 is a real small number.  I am not a believer that we were willing to go for an extension at this time.  There would be plenty of time to do that after this season.  This strikes me more as a reward and motivator for the hard work and improvement he has shown over the three years.  Hopefully the best is yet to come.

I doubt they were biting their nails trying to decide until the last second.   I'm sure they knew what they were going to do long ago

What if he tore a bicep or quad working out a week ago.  Plenty of reason to wait

Well the guys whose options were picked up early didn’t have to worry about their decision dragging out until the last hour.  Good for them.  They were rewarded early and slept well and celebrated early.  Waiting until the eleventh hour can’t be enjoyable I would think.  I guess it could have been the bicep thing or maybe working on an extension.  I wonder how many of the 32 received an extension.  Anyway good for him and the Colts.  One thing should be certain.  When his football days are over he will never have to work another day in his life. Lol

I like Kwity, but $13m is too much for what he brings in my opinion. From my understanding he's been working on his pass rush this offseason. Ballard has said he needs to improve in that area. I'd like to see him actually improve before the Colts give him more money. If he does, give him a contract that reflects that. If he doesn't, give him a contract that reflects that.

I agree.  Now maybe Partridge can help him improve.  That would be great.  But I can also see his snaps going down with Latu starting.  I read where Latu is also very good at setting the edge.  And you have Dayo competing for snaps as well.   Maybe Kwity can move to the other side?  Lots of possibilities.  I would think the odds of him  exploding and having a record year are very long.  So deciding to give him all that guaranteed money makes no sense for me.  Follow the Pittman path.  They are waiting to the last day so it’s obviously not an easy decision.

  4. I have been reading a few articles today presenting the pros and cons of picking up Kwity Paye’s 5th year option.  They are not really making it seem like it’s an easy decision.  Having Latu fall into their laps surely surprised them.  14m is a big number fully guaranteed.  With Latu on board I’m not sure I would do it.  Ebukam actually graded out higher than Paye last year I believe.  Paye could be a candidate to trade if we don’t pick up the option.  With it I would think it would be tougher.  Either way we are going to find out soon.

Sorry to interrupt but I see this Budda conversation on here a lot. Isn't Budda Baker a in the box strong safety??  He isn't the type of free safety that roams deep and gets you picks. 7 interceptions in 7 years. Simmons fits that bill a lot better

Simmons is 30 and Diggs is 31.  I would be happy with either but Budda is 28 and in his prime.  We wouldn’t have to worry about FS for a long time.  And it’s an important position in Gus’s defense.  He would be my first choice if we could get him.

I think Baker is overrated, especially at $15m/year. I don't see him as a potential final piece, I'm not even sure he's better than Blackmon.

The Cardinals obviously think he is a great player or they wouldn’t have paid him.  You pay your own good players as Ballard has shown he will do.  The Cardinals did the same thing by paying him.  I see him as a potential final piece not a one or two year solution.

Vet CB and vet safety. We could use a RB too. I don’t want to run Taylor into the ground. Ballard was asked about RB after the draft and he seemed to be open to it.

Agree on the RB.  I would like another veteran in that group that has proven they can run between the tackles.

Yeah, I can't see them spending about $15M on a FS when there are a few other veterans that could do the job.  Hopefully Cross gets his head together and can take the spot.  He has the physical abilities.  Not sure if he has the football smarts.

I understand what your saying but if FS is an important position if Gus’s system why not make a move and nail it down for the next 3-4 years when you don’t have to pay your quarterback.  He’s in his prime.  Pass rush is important and with Latu it now has a chance to be great.  What’s missing is that FS stud.  Baker could be the final piece. Just sayin.

I disagree for several reasons. 1.) We have Cross, Thomas, and Simpson at FS. All are young. I want to see a battle between the 3 to see who can start and if any are any good. 2.) We have Blackmon at SS, we don't need two veterans. 3.) We need a veteran at CB that can not only improve our CB play, but that the young CB group can learn from. 4.) I feel Baker can be cut easily if we sign a veteran CB and I'm not sure if Flowers will be 100% right away.

There's just so many more reasons to go after a CB than a FS IMO.

I disagree.  FS is the last line of defense.  An experienced player there will definitely pay huge dividends and he will help with the development of the corners as well.  He will spot any potential problems and help the young guys with their reads. Our corners are predominantly late round picks.  That’s not ideal. Fortunately we have Kenny out there to help as well.  At least they finally figured out Blackmon was a SS last year.  That was important.  I think having our young FS candidates learn from watching a veteran FS do his thing will pay major dividends.  I’m pulling for a FS addition with a two year contract. Ballard said he was happy with our corners.  I didn’t hear the same praise for the safety room.

Yeah, I believe tomorrow is that date, but it doesn't matter, because we are not projected to get any comp picks.

Minshew + Moss got wiped out by Davis + Flacco

    EDIT: 4:01pm, Monday following draft.

I feel great about this team right now.  Signing a FS in the next couple of days would really fill a big hole and anchor the secondary.  Here’s hoping.
