Wasn't Haegs main issue his strength?  He's solid technically and football IQ, but can be pushed around a bit.  I always thought the weight room would fix that issue eventually.

I think strength is a major issue for Haag.  I thought the weight room and a year of NFL strengthening would help him out but that was not the case last year.   Versatility is all fine and good but if you are a liability on the field it means nothing.  I would feel better if we found a backup like Joe Reitz at cutdown time.  But Joe has all of the  preseason to make his case so we shall see.

For the reserve Tackle positions I'm also questioning or at least almost certain that Clark either won't make the team  or will have a nice Hill to climb in order to make it.  And it's not because of position versatility.  I just think Good and Haeg will probably be called on in those roles.

Haeg will be like Joe Reitz sort of filling in for everyone and then Good will be the other guy unless he beats out Austin Howard for the starting spot somehow.  I have my doubts that happens but we shall see.  Maybe if Clark plays well we end up keeping an extra lineman or something.

I liked Joe Reitz.  I was trying to think of his name earlier but I had a senior moment.  He was a perfect versatile backup who held up well when called upon.   Joe Haag has a long way to go to be another Joe Reitz IMO.  We shall see.  I wouldn't rule out Good winning the starting RT spot again.  He did it last year although I would consider Howard a better challenger.  Clark I don't see at all.

I'm opposite.   I don't see how Bond makes it unless Haeg really stinks up the joint. To be honest I don't think Bond will offer much position versatility.   I mean he's a 6 foot 1 center so I don't know how much I see him playing Guard and he for sure isn't playing Tackle.   The Guard position on this team right now is jam packed with competition between Nelson, Slauson, Mewhort, Braden Smith, Glowinski and maybe somebody else I forgot.   You might have a grudge against Haeg but he can play every position on the line and that's great value as a backup/reserve player.  That offers more to the team than Deshwan Bond and Glowinski.  Haegs name didn't come off the lips of Irsay for no reason.  Plus you have Slauson who can also play center.  I think they roll with Haeg and the other option of having Slauson to play center in a pinch.  Plus you can cut a guy like Bond and put him on the PS to keep him around if you need to.

I thought Bond made the team last year as a backup center and then he too got hurt.  He is only a center and Kelly is only a center.   So we went with the center position last year with two players who only play one position.  I didn't realize Slauson can also play center so he also gives us the versatility we need for the interior.  To me that's more of a reason Haag doesn't make it.   Haag hasn't heldup at G or T.  Hence the additions of Nelson, Slauson, Howard and Smith.  Haag can play a number of positions but he is a liability IMO.   If he earns a backup role good for him.   But i, for one, will be holding my breath if he is out there trying to protect Andrew Luck.

I dont think Haeg is bad at all versatile plays well I think at right guard and tackle, learning the center position. Never hurt. I would be shocked if he didn't make the team.

Not me.  I'm actually expecting it.  They brought in much better talent.  If he already has dropped down to 4th. string the writing is pretty much on the wall.  He needs to have a great camp but there are always injuries so you never know.

He was the emergency center last year.   They didn't just start working him at center this year.

I thought Bond got hurt and that's why he started to work there.  i think last year was his first time trying the center position but I don't remember him playing there in a game.   Maybe he did.

I think irsay's comments on haeg as a young backup that is versatile enough to play any position on the line, indicates they are looking at him to be a big part of this offensive line depth going forward. He needs a nice competitive camp, but should be on the roster.

We shall see.  But if he's really listed as 4th string thats a lot of people to get over even as a backup.  The fact they are trying him at center seems like a desperation move to see if he can find a spot.  Being versatile is good.  But you need  more than versatility to stay on a team.   You at least have to hold up in real competition.  He has struggled with that part of his game.

I noticed that Doyel said, in his article about Luck & the coaching staff, that Haeg has been slotted in as 4th string...  Is that good (we’ve got a lot of great young talent on the OL) or bad (Haeg has regressed and is/was never that good to begin with)?  Do you guys think he’ll make the final roster and how do you guys feel if he doesn’t?

It's good.  I never thought he was that good to begin with.  If Doyel knows he's 4th string I don't see how he makes the team.  Same for Clarke.  I read somewhere where another players is listed ahead of Clarke as the backup tackle either side.   IMO this is great news for the Colts.  It shows that we might be on the road to putting together a real strong and deeper OL.

  8. I would think you would need the threat of a productive run game to make it work.  We think the run game will be more productive but we really don't know.  So unless we prove otherwise there is no reason to fear our run game to start the season.  And I don't think we will have plays designed for Luck to fake a handoff and run himself.  So if Luck returns healthy he is the guy you have to fear and game plan for.  I was reading where we are going to use three TE formation's a lot.  That could give us a chance to see what our run game can do and give extra PP for Luck while at the same time giving our new OL a chance to figure things out.   RPO is something we are going to bring into our offense but that doesn't mean it's going to be effective out of the gate.  You still need a balanced offense to make it work effectively.   We need a run game.  We shall see.

That may be true, however, a lineman capable of playing multiple spots "effectively" in small doses is an extremely good commodity to have.....due to his versatility I'm sure he sticks around.

He might be versatile but I don't see him as "effective".  We could probably find someone better on the waiver wire at cutdown time.  To me he is on the bubble and not a must have.  We shall see.

You may want to check your compass.....

Haeg played in 15 games with 14 starts as a rookie for the Colts. In 2017, he played in all 16 games, starting 15 at right tackle and right guard.

I think he started frequently as a rookie.  He did not improve in 2017. Last year he only started because Good was injured early and he was it or heaven forbid Clark.  Good had beaten him out at RT.   He started because of circumstances not because he earned the job.   I think he and Clark are on the bubble especially after our draft and new FA signings on the OL.

Important notes I caught from this link that havn't been discussed as far as I know.

    1. Reich expects Andrew Luck to start throwing sometime between the time mini-camp breaks and training camp starts.  So we now have a time table from the head coach.

    2. Joe Haeg took some snaps at center.  So it looks like the coaching staff might see him as a guy who can play all 5 positions on the OL.

IMO Haag has struggled everywhere he has played on the OL.  Trying him at center could be a last attempt to find him a possible backup spot.  He and Clark are fighting for their roster spots IMO.  Remember Haag couldn't beat out Vuj at LG after Mewhort went down. He and Clark only played as last resort options.  Both Grigson guys.

He was one of the LBs I wanted to target early in the offseason as a possible trade. If the price is right, I think this guy will be a Colt shortly. Need some veteran presence in that LB group.

I couldn't agree more.  I wanted him in a trade as well and now he is there for the taking.  His release was all about cap savings IMO.  I hope Ballard moves on this one.

  13. Supposedly we received trade offers for Brissett.  Ballard said no probably to hedge agains Luck not being ready. If Luck returns fully recovered you can bet he will be gone next year and we will sign an older veteran backup.  If he has a good preseason we could easily get another 2nd. rd. pick at a minimum to help finish the rebuild.  Especially since next years QB class is not that great.

If Brissett can learn to read things better and get rid of the ball to his hot route he should do better in this offense. I thought he was pretty horrible against the blitz for most of last year.  I will give him a little bit of a caveat due to the circumstances but not much.   I think this system does more to free guys up faster and takes advantage of each level of the field.  He's going to have to do that because he really not much of a runner.  I mean he can take off a little bit, but he's not very fast and it doesn't take long for guys to hawk him down. Hopefully we don't have to see him at all this year to be honest.

I agree.  And don't forget the Patriots weren't afraid to trade him while he was on a cheap contract and Jimmy G was gone.  They obviously thought they could find an eventual Brady replacement and he wasn't it.

We have him cheap for another couple years.  Keep him and trade him near the end of his rookie contract like NE does. Arguably, his value may be highest just before his free agency. I could see us getting a 3rd, maybe even a 2nd if he continues to develop.

i'd love to see him stay as our backup, but i think we will be out-bid in FA.

we got him for nothing as Allen would have been released anyway.

keep him for insurance until another backup can be groomed.

i doubt we re-sign him as he'll be getting some attention from teams which will boost his price beyond his value to us.

We traded Dorsett for Brissett just to be accurate.

  16. Breeland is a young proven starter in this league.  He earned his 3yr. 24m contract.  Unfortunate circumstances cost him to fail his physical.  Comparing him to Melvin is apples vs. oranges.  Melvin signed a 1yr. prove it deal for a reason.  He's 28 with one good year.  Breeland doesn't need a prove it deal.  I believe he was a 4yr. starter.  If he's healthy he should get a contract longer than one year.  If we want him we should sign him to a fair contract and not take advantage of the situation.  I would much rather have a player who is happy with his contract than one who feels a team is taking advantage of the situation and making him prove himself all over again.  That would leave a bad taste in my mouth.  If we do it the right way I believe we will get a great return on our investment.

The guy no one is mentioning is Steve Ishmael.  He may be drawing a lot of attention this pre season and camp.

I can't believe he went undrafted.. This dude can catch a football.

Totally agree.  He's the perfect example of a very talented player on just an average college team.  He could really flourish with a real QB like Luck throwing to him.

I love Desir, but he is a 27 year old journeyman that logged his first real starts last year....

Milton is and aleays will be a special teams gunner - which he is excellent at.

Moore showed promise as a gunner and as a boundary corner the last few games - TBD

Wilson is our best corner who played like it when he did get on the field.

Breeland has started for 4 years in a tough NFC East and done well. The Panthers certainly paid him as such prior to the failed physical. He will start for us if signed. Desir won't make it easy for him, but he'll start.

Exactly.  We don't have too many young four year starters on our team period.  He received a nice contract from Carolina before he failed the physical and rightly deserved.  He is a proven and capable starter in this league and would certainly start unless Desir has a huge preseason.  I hope it all works out and we sign him.  We could certainly use another proven veteran CB in our secondary and he would be a real nice addition at this time of the year.

  19. I bet It was interesting because he told them he was planing to sign an un drafted rookie, Cirino, but he wanted to make sure he was looking at all his options.  He told them he respected them as players and he wanted each of them to convince him why he should sign them and then he would make his decision on Wednesday.  That's why he brought them in on the same day, Tuesday.
