In my opinion behind QB, interior OL is the  biggest transition from college. NFL coordinators put together crazy good schemes that can deceive veterans regularly.  I predict Smith to start as a backup and only get promoted due to injury or horrible play the first year.  He is starting level talent but will need to be coached up like most rookies.  My bet is Mewhort at RG with Haeg and Slauson backing him up.

I'm pretty sure Mewhort started as a rookie and did fine.  We shall see.

I think I'm in the minority but I think Morrison will be the starting MIKE this season. From the limited amount of tape I've seen on the two rookie MIKEs we drafted, I don't think either diagnose a play as well as Morrison does.

Correct.  I think you are in the minority.

Yea, I meant to say "didn't know". After they took him I did some research and watched some of his highlights. I would say I'm optimistic on Franklin. His highlights looked solid but they were "highlights". I watched a condensed version game of him vs Louisville and he looked lost and out of place a lot but I think most college LBs did against Lamar Jackson lol.

Our scouts really like him as a middle linebacker.  A little undersized but fast and a sold hitter and tackler.  I think Morrison could have trouble making this team.

Good is injury prone and inconsistent. Clark and Haeg can improve just like anyone else. You have to prove yourself year to year. New staff, New scheme. We shall see who gets the job.

Good has his injury issues but he's far from inconsistent.  He beat out both for the RT spot last year.  Clark and Haag couldn't stop a bull rush if there life depended on it and they were the higher drafted players.  Good has gotten better every year.  You can't say that about the other two.  But maybe a new staff and scheme will help them.  We shall see.  I see them both on the bubble right now.  Heck Haag couldn't even beat out Vuj!

I don't know much about Franklin but every time I turned a Cuse game on, Ishmael was making a contested grab. I love this pickup and would be shocked if he didn't make the team. I actually like him more than Deon Cain. I've been watching Cain play since he was in high school and always thought he played smaller than his size. Cain is a track guy to me and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he didn't make the team.

Read up on what they say about Franklin.  You'll see what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure it could but it's only relevant to the O-line in our case because that's basically where we're packing a good percentage of our top draft resource.

I think I'd just be a bit more confident in our strategy causing significant success if I'd seen it work before or even other good teams trending in the same direction. Having 3 times as many 1st round picks just on the line than we have on the whole defense is a strategy I've never seen attempted let alone work.

Unfortunately the only team I can think of who packed their line solely with top picks  was the Browns when they had Thomas, Mack, Erving, Bitonio and Schwartz. I'm definitely not saying it's conclusive but it's not a glowing endorsement either!

Completely agree that we needed to improve the line but it seems to me that the best teams fill those spots creatively and allocate the resources in a different way. It's very interesting to me that we're going in a different direction but seem convinced that our way will provide the results.

Unfortunately the Browns never had a QB.  We do.  Could we be the new trendsetters?  It's a copycat league.  Ballard is going to show them the correct way to build a line.   Heck, who can afford these FA OL nowadays?

    It will be interesting.
Good lost weight and was a little quicker and better last season.
I expect Smith to get trained for both positions. And he could beat out Good at RT with Slauson winning the RG spot.
I think i would like that.

Good did lose weight and was quicker and better last season.  I can see both Good and Smith winning starting spots.  Slauson is the older veteran but I would prefer the younger guys nail down the positions for the long haul if they can do it.  I am hoping we finally get the line permanently fixed this year.

I think you missed it, I just don’t value the guard position in the 1st round, period

I don’t have much time to argue on message boards, but I would just say this to hopefully add a little bit of clarity, and then we may agree to disagree.

If you take Nelson out of the game and replace him with a guard half as good, I don’t believe it makes much of a difference statistically in terms of points scored by the offense (1 or 2 points, if that). And that’s in terms of points, not even talking about winning.

QB's hate getting pressure up the middle.  That was one of our biggest problems last year.  Solidifying the center of the line reduces the pressure, reduces hits on the QB and that in turn increases the effectiveness of our QB.  That eventually will lead to more points and wins.  Nelson should be an unbelievable value pick for the next 5 yrs. considering what the top FA guards are now getting paid.  Great pick and great value.  I'm sure Luck and Brisett are thrilled with the pick.

Feeling good about Nelson/Kelly/Smith (or Mewhort) in the middle of the Oline.

Million dollar question is who is our RT ?

Good.  He won the job last year and the only guy I see beating him out is Smith if they decide to go there.  I know the consensus is Smith stays at G but FWIW Polian did say they drafted Smith to play RT.  We shall see.  Good played well until he got hurt.

It's nice to think about the possibiliies of our inside three Nelson Kelly Smith. Let's pray this is the year A.Costanzo gets his crap together and gets back to the player he once was. I'm really scared about deense though big ???s with front 7. Hopefully Hooker and Geathers are back to full health. We need Wilson to grow into #1 starting CB quick, after losing Melvin. We need our offense to be clicking on all cylinders to be competitive. I hope Luck has the Manning ability to make recievers and TEs better because se need it. Outside of TY there is no proven starters on our team.

In case you missed it Ballard said Costanzo played the best football of his career last year.  He thought he had a great season.

    Yesterday Ballard said,

"We thought he (Smith) was the last starting -level guard. Pairing him with Nelson gives us two young guards going forward for many years to come."

It looks like Ballard sees him as a guard.  If that's the case then Good should be our starting RT.  Camp and preseason will determine who plays where though.  What little I have seen of Smith he looks like he could easily play RT.  I wouldn't rule it out at this stage.

I think he can, he's a large guy. Slauson maybe will be the other Guard. I am not sure Mewhort can stay healthy?

Good won the RG job last year then got injured.  I think he will start out as the frontrunner and I think they are hoping he takes the job.  I really see Mewhort and Slauson as veteran backups now.  I think Smith can be the RT.  He looks quicker on his feet than Good that's why I like Good at RG.

  13. The thing about this draft which surprised me was how many reaches he took in the second round. I would have thought he would have been more aggressive in acquiring real day one starters than picking players with more upside.  He wasn't ready for a run on the OL.  We were fortunate to get Smith after he publicly said there were plenty of OL in the later rounds. The OL class was strong and so was RB and LB class and they all went fast.  Just because a class is deep doesn't mean you can afford to wait.  If there are guys you want you go and get them.  You can move up and down and we had the picks to do it.  I'm sure we acquired some good players but it might take quite awhile for some of them to really contribute.  The bright side is he fixed the OL.  That should help.  His mild lack of activity in FA really made this draft important.  I don't think you can say he hit the ball out of the park in this draft so far.  He could still get CJ Anderson and help the running game which I hope he does.  Ballard is looking like he is more of a conservative methodical GM who is willing to make some moves but nothing to drastic.  He has a lot of patience.  Hopefully these picks work out for us.

Who is Bates? You mean that damn near undrafted kid from Maine? That's a heck of a lot different than a 2nd round pick. Keep your mind open and watch film. Touray will be pretty good.

The point is Mathis really liked Bates, didn't we draft him?, and he said a lot of nice things about his potential just like he is saying about Touray.  FYI  Mayock said he saw a kid who didn't know much of what he was doing.  From his perspective it sounds like Touray has a lot to learn.  Just because Mathis says nice things doesn't mean it's a sure thing.  I would hope he will be pretty good.  He is a 2nd. rd. pick but unfortunately another project IMO.
