I agree completely.  I'd love to have competent backup for Kelly.  If Haeg isn't as good a center as Bond, then I'm not buying into the Swiss Army Knife thing.  I get you want to conserve roster spots, but we are all painfully aware of the need for strong backups.  I'm hoping Haeg shows something this year.  If he isn't strong enough for tackle, I'm not sure sliding him inside will help a whole lot.

I am having a hard time buying into Haag as this Swiss Army Knife guy as well.  Last year he couldn't beat out Haag at RT and then when the LG job opened up Vuj won that job.  He can probably play the three positions now but if he isn't any good what's the point.  Vuj might actually be the more versatile swing T or G.  We shall find out soon.

Bond is not remotely close to being average, at best a borderline PS to 3rd string player. Look at how low PFF graded him last year...basically worse than Antonio Morrison.

From what I remember I thought Bond was getting a lot of compliments about his play before his injury.  Right now he is listed as the 2nd. team center ahead of Haag who is on the third team.  I think he has a chance to make this team.

I don't trust Haag or Clark out there protecting Luck.  I hold my breath when I see them out there.  It's a disaster waiting to happen.

  4. Two things that surprised me.  Clark as the No.2 tackle behind Costanzo and Haag No. 3 at various positions on the depth chart. I went to the Colt's site to check the chart and he's even third behind Bond at center.  Also they have Wilson listed on the 2nd.team at CB.   I have a feeling we are going to be really active on cutdown day.  BTW does anyone know if are we allowed to put players on the practice squad without having to worry about them being claimed?  At least on the initial makeup of the roster.  After that they can be.  I ask because it appears we have a young placekicker who is doing great on field goals and Vinateri isn't getting any younger.

Exactly. You draft them and then do what is needed to extend them before they hit FA... We would be overpaying Donald becuase of his interest in the largest contract possible, which means he is going to try and get to FA and jack his price up. Not interested in it. Even if you draft that kind of guy, do you want him if he doesn't really care to be here? Donald at quarterback money (20 mil) would absolutely wreck your cap. That is 3 quality starting players per year. That isn't what championship teams do. Look at the Patriots and tell me when they have ever done something like this? They even have the luxury of Tom Brady taking a small cap hit in order to spread the wealth, and they still don't do it.

Working the cap to your advantage is about finding value, not overspending, extending your draft picks before FA, and balancing the act. Spread the cap across all positions, and balance it offensively and defensively (see Colts during manning years with 70% geared towards the offense, with a handful of players making up most of the defensive cap.)

In regard to holding the team together, you absolutely cannot if you have two large cap hits on roster. When it's time to extend Kelly, Hooker, Wilson, Basham (high hopes), Mack, Nelson, and the rest of these quality players from the last 3 classes, we will be choosing a few that we are incapable of extending due to a 5 or 6 year max contract for a player like Donald.

Obviously this isn't going to happen, and is just scenario. I'm just very much against it, and think Ballard and most cap managers are as well. If you believe in your vision, scouting, and drafting ability, you dont make moves like this.

I would not pay him QB money.   I have said that earlier.  That would be a nonstarter.  Ballard should and would walk away.   But he is a young player and I would have no problem making him the highest paid defensive player.  Mack as well for that matter.  Our young players are years away from FA and have yet to demonstrate they deserve large contracts.  I sure hope they do though.  Donald and Mack deserve the big contracts.  Either one would be major upgrades to our defense and could help us win immediately.  They are both major talents.  The likelihood of either being traded is pretty remote I admit.  But if something does present itself you owe it to your team to have a conversation.  They both have many years left to play at a high level.

Until they both go down with injury and we are left with 80% of the total cap to work with... Look at Houston last season. Can you imagine what their roster would have looked like had Watson been a $25 mil caphit when he and Watt both went down? I'd be curious to know many superbowl winning teams over the past 10 years have had such a large percentage of the cap in 2 or 3 players? I'm not a big advocate of having large cap hits outside of the quarterback position. Spread the wealth and create serious depth across the roster. That's championship building strategy... and what Ballard is working to accomplish.

The only guy were paying now is Luck.  I don't think Donald or Mack would kill our cap.  You draft players in the hope they are with you long term.  If they are good you are going to have to pay them.  Then you have to make decisions like all SB winning teams do.  Broncos and Seahawks come to mind.  Hopefully Ballard is successful and we will find out if he can be successful at holding the team together.  That's a problem quite aways down the road considering the current makeup of our roster.

If a 1st round pick was offered I think Ballard would take it. With that said I just don't see Irsay over riding him if that were to happen.

If Brissett does shine in pre-season the Colts may get an offer but personally I doubt it would be a 1st rounder.

Why not?  With a reportedly weak QB class coming out wouldn't a team be smart to acquire a young proven QB with it's 1st choice over one of the college QB's with a lot to prove?

Donald is the best defensive tackle in the game. But bringing someone like him in would limit your opportunity to build a young player we might already have on roster that could produce for a fraction of the longterm cost that Donald will bring to whoever he ends up with.

I agree with all 4 of your points wholeheartedly.

All well and good but the counterpoint is the word "might".  Might already have on our roster.  Donald is already the best defensive tackle in the game.  We paid Andrew Luck.  There is nothing wrong with paying Aaron Donald.  Then we definitely have two of the best players in the game.  Just sayin.

I'm gonna throw a bone out here for you and @Jared Cisneros to chew on:

What if Ballard knew Andrew wasn't going to play last year way back when they were saying he should be fine by week 1, so Ballard didn't address the OLine on purpose knowing he needed to start building his 4-3 defense early so it could transition quickly to catch up with a Luck-led offense THIS year, when he could quickly assemble an OLine in one offseason for Lucks triumphant 2018 return?  Would you be mad that he misled us all last year to keep ticket sales up for his owner during a losing season, in a grand scheme to become a winning ballclub THIS year, and increase profits even more in only his second year as GM?

That is called a conspiracy theory.

Um... You might wanna rethink this statement.

This next class of defensive linemen are going to be pretty dang special.

I have to say I don't think there would be a player as good as Donald or Mack at 14-18.  We're talking Donald or Mack here.  Not a regular 1st rd, NFL starter.  As always is the case if that position is loaded there will be an early run especially since the QB class is not strong.  The odds are pretty long there.  I would have the conversations if either one was suddenly to become available.

I think they’re asking Smith to play some RT as a short-term thing, not long term.

Howard  has been banged up.   So has Good.   Haeg is playing mostly backup center.     And Clark is still struggling to find a home.    Smith feels like an emergency need.

I’d bet he’s starting at RG by next year at the latest.

I hope you're right.  Ballard's quote was pretty direct. " We've asked him to play RT."  Not to fill in or help us at RT.  Costanzo, Nelson, Kelly, even Mewhort were high OL draft picks and moved right into there best position.  No trying different positions.  Maybe they think he could be a starting RT.  We shall see I guess.

It came out yesterday that Aaron Donald is looking for elite QB money. The Rams have supposedly offered the highest contract for a defensive player ever, and he’s turning it down. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a generational talent, but he is not worth that kind of money. So not only would we have to trade multiple first round picks, we’d also have to break the bank to keep him otherwise risk these lengthy holdouts that he’s done two years straight. I wouldn’t want the headache that he or Bell are causing their respective teams.

If the Rams did offer him a contract making him the highest paid defensive player ever and he turned it down then I can see Ballard staying away.  I don't see Ballard going overboard on the that one.   Although that said there is no guarantee next years draft is going to get us a major talent on the DL.  Especially since I don't see us drafting that high again.  Donald and Mack are proven young major talent.  Now if Mack would be receptive to being the highest paid defensive player and the Raiders are receptive to a trade then it's a discussion worth having.  We haven't had a major talent on defense since Freeney in his prime.  Either player would elevate our defense in a major way.  I can see Ballard paying if he feels the player is worth it but not going overboard.

For sure. Being an All SEC offensive linemen is nothing to sneeze at, & while it's nice to be able to move guys around without having a huge dropoff, I'd prefer Smith to eventually earn the starting RG spot as opposed to being forced to play RT.

He could have let Smith develop behind Slausen.  Slausen and Howard are both vets earmarked to start.  Now he stated he has asked Smith to play RT.  That sounds like they are thinking they want RT to be his permanent position.  Otherwise why do it ?  Just let him overtake Slauson when he's ready if they want him to be the RG.  To me moving him behind Howard is a signal that they want RT to be his home.

  14. Both Donald and Mack are interesting cases.  Donald has to be upset other guys on his team are getting paid and he is not.  Then his GM publicly says they don't agree on the value his camp has placed on him.  Mack's ,on the other hand, hasn't had any talks since February or even a phone call from his new coach.  How does a player react to that?  Not an Earl Thomas situation yet but it is looking like it could get worse before they are both resolved one way or the other.

MH was released from the titans on march 18 2013, the colts signed him the next day.   he wasnt a camp pick up

as for why they let him go, he was never meant to be a long term answer there, just a mentor and backup to jake locker.  they let matt go realizing neither one of them were the future

I guess they didn't want him to be a backup to Jake Locker but we sure as heck saw him as a great backup to Luck and signed him immediately.  That's my point.  You can find veteran backups.  You trade your young promising backup QB's to get draft picks or players.  The Patriots did it twice in the same year.  I'm sure we will do it with Brissett when Ballard decides the time is right.

He also was signed as a FA before camp

Vets that will be available at the end of camp have either flamed out with another team for some reason or had issues and were never invited to one

So why was Matt available as a FA before camp?  Did he flame out or have issues and was never invited?  Doesn't really matter.  He was available and he was good for us.
