  1. Carr/Gordon here.  I do NOT concur that Carr would require a 2nd.  He's not one of the "elite" guys, but is still very good.  I think a 3rd and maybe a mid-round next year or possibly a 4th or 5th and exchange Brissett.  IF the Raiders are truly letting him go then they will already have someone else at the helm so they wouldn't be that worried about it.  Brissett could provide them the backup.  Reports are Gruden is tired of Carr anyway.  Gordon would be a nice upside player that you wouldn't have to spend a high pick on and let him develop behind Carr.  If he doesn't pan out, you didn't spend that much.  Love would not bother me as long as it isn't at 13.

Wildcard:  Keep an eye on the Stafford situation in Detroit.

  2. I'd take this.  Not sure Becton is going to fall to 13, but it's certainly possible if there's a QB run.  Becton is a mammoth!  Love Blacklock and Aiyuk.  You addressed our top 3 needs in the first 3 picks.  Would love to get Cooper but don't think Dallas let's him walk.  I could see Ngakoue and Bridgewater leaving though.  As for our own, I would probably keep Clark if only for depth.  Nice job.

If you don't have a franchise QB you are almost guaranteed mediocrity, no matter what else you do. Maybe you have a strong year here or there when everything else is clicking but there is just too much rotation on NFL rosters and such teams are not stable and quickly fall off and having the most important position as a constant and a great constant is one of the best ways to secure long-term success and long-term high floor + chances for high-ceiling whenever you enter a phase where you hit on most other things. The easiest way to ensure consistency on the high end is having a franchise QB.

If you don't have a franchise QB, you should be looking for one. If you miss on a franchise QB, you should discard him ASAP and continue the search until you find your guy.

There is no easy solution for teams that don't have a franchise QB and there is no guarantee that you will get yours quickly. But it doesn't really matter - you have to try and keep trying because the alternative is worse.

(edit: Disclaimer, because I know I will be misunderstood/misinterpreted - I do not mean draft QBs just for the sake of drafting QB. Draft him only if you really like him and you think he can be a franchise QB. If not, build up the roster for the time you like a QB and you acquire him, or try to accumulate future assets that might help you get a QB you like in the future)

I agree with you.  But I happen to believe this year's draft crop is more like your last paragraph.  That is why I subscribe to the idea of going another direction THIS year.  I don't see anything wrong with taking a guy who has potential in later rounds (Gordon, Morgan, Hurts?) but I don't think this draft is the place to get that franchise guy.  Now FA or trades with other teams...…...

I could be wrong though and I will trust Ballard whatever he decides.

I do think there is value in having a QB sit a year, especially when they're coming from a school that doesn't run a pro system. It gives them a year to work on mechanics and to learn a pro system.

and While the argument that if you are a first round pick you should be ready to play day one, refer to Pat Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers, who both sat

If that is the case then take BPA, suck next year, and get your QB next season like Lawrence.  You're basically sitting on a 1st round guy when you could have had a guy playing and getting experience at another position.  That is not good value.

Now if you're talking a mid-round QB, then yeah.  But the odds this guy is going to become the next Rodgers or Mahomes is slim.  Better chance he becomes the next mediocre QB who isn't even on the roster in 5 years and that pick would be a huge waste of resources.

Ballard is gonna roll with JB and CK, so all this info about Love be reported is pumping him up and helping him rise on draft boards.

Then this prediction on Tua pumps people up again. In the end it causes a run on QBs and a player like Brown, Kinlaw, Lamb or Jeudy drips to us at 13.

That would be shrewd and CB usually is that.  Although Burrow and Tua are the only QB's I would want in the 1st round, I just cannot see him pulling the trigger like that.  Unless Ballard is SURE that guy is the next Mahomes or Brady or Peyton, he is going to take his chances on another guy later on and take BPA.  Now......if it comes down to it and Tua just happens to land in his lap for some reason at 13, then yeah, I could see it.  But throwing all these reports out there linking the Colts and interest in all these QB's a is SMART way to go if there's another position you are honing in on (ie. DT or OT).

  6. Now that would be MY wet dream, but I HIGHLY doubt it happens.  I agree with what was said, I'm not sure Jones even becomes available (although not impossible, but there will be a major bidding war if he does) and I don't envision Brown falling to 13 at all unless something major happens to him, and then you wouldn't want him.  I could more easily see Kinlaw at 13 and then a guy like Vic Beasley or MAYBE Clowney or someone of that ilk.  I'm not sure Armstead is going to get out of SF either.  It's VERY tough to sign guys who are both young and productive because if they are so good their own teams will do everything they can to try and keep them, a la Jones, and then franchise them if they can't get a deal done.  You're usually going to get a guy that is flawed but may still be able to help.  And that's just the way it is.  Puts more of an emphasis on drafting well IMHO.

  7. The Chiefs have traded or released several top young talents in recent years.  And that was BEFORE having to re-up Mahomes after winning a Superbowl and being tight on cap space.  It would not shock me to see Jones not there, but the question is would he even want to play in Indy?  And how many other teams would be after him?

  8. I got one for ya.  Sign Ngakoue/Armstead and Jones.  Draft Kinlaw (unless Brown is somehow there).  That would give you a front 4 of Ngakoue/Armstead, Kinlaw, Jones, and Houston.  With Turay, Autry, and Banogu in the rotation.  That would be a heckuva front!  I know I know, it'll never happen but a brotha can dream, right?

Yep, and even worse he was starting to have the deer in the headlights look. PFF called him an "average at best QB but it looking more like a below average QB". The Raiders are going after Brady for a reason, and not just because it's Brady. They think they can win now and don't think Carr can do that. I wouldn't want him, but if we did I'd trade JB and a 4th and be done with it..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Carr the odds on favorite to win the MVP a couple of years ago before the Colts went to Oakland and landed on his knee?  He was tearing it up but he had a better WR at that time with Amari Cooper though.  He hasn't looked the same since without a true #1 guy but I'm not surprised.  It's almost like Gruden is trying to sabotage him so that he can get rid of him and get someone else.
