I agree.... there's no substitute for game tape.

And yeah, he probably wont make it to #13....a LOT of things would have to fall into place.

It's convoluted.....but IMO, the keys to him sneaking thru start with #3 and #4... and if he slips past Detroit and the Giants, I think the Tua/Hebert/Love QB run starts and the next gauntlet is #8 AZ & #9 JAX... two very strong possibilities.

Beyond that point though, we have 3 teams with glaring needs at OT and/or WR and there should be enough really good OTs to slide Brown to us if he's made it that far.

Is that enough what if's for ya? :funny:

Yeah I really think that 7, 8, 9 area is where he;ll probably end up.  But who knows really?  I will pull for him to be available at 13 and then hope Ballard sees what I see.

I agree.... without any medical concerns I'd have no issues taking him at all.

Of course.... IF all this Top 10 QB hype somehow pushes Derrick Brown down to #13, I'd just as soon we take the guesswork out of it and select Brown instead.

Yep.  IDC if he ran a 7 second 40.  The guy can play and he can get in the QB's face.  People fall in/out of love with so many players based on the combine and completely forget what the guy did on the field.  And his game tape says he's the best DT in this draft.

I still doubt he will make it to 13 though.

  4. Be wary of combine vs. tape.  Yes Brown was unathletic.  Yes Epanesa was slow.  But there are guys at the combine that don't show real well who go on to have great NFL careers.  The tape doesn't lie and you can fall in/out of love with a guy and get hoodwinked off of combine stats.

These guys aren't running track or throwing the shotput.  They're football players and there's a LOT more to playing football than speed, etc.

I hope this DOES knock Brown down to our spot and I hope Epanesa falls all the way down to round 2.  I'd take both and let the rebuild of the DL begin.

1- that word, generational, gets thrown around way too much.  How many hall of fame players are in a generation?  I'd settle for a guy that level... Manning wasn't even a generational player.

2- That ain't happening.  Unless you think they will lose enough to pick top 5, probably top 3... The teams that are that bad? Not passing on Lawrence or Fields for whatever they currently have at QB.  No, Lawrence and Fields are probably not generational players either.

1- I've always thought it meant "generational for that team", not the best player of the decade or something like that.

2 - If you look at what I said before that, they would need the draft capital to be able to trade up for him.  If they traded back THIS year they may be able to get that.

Your well-articulated response is appreciated.  I quoted this section to emphasize some variables concerning GM decision-making process.  The word "still" in full caps reminds us that in the NFL, you're only as good as your next move.  That notion, coupled with the challenge of mediating pressure from team owners, can undoubtedly affect a GM's personnel decisions in the name of self-preservation.

Every night Dan Snyder dreams of meddling with front office affairs so he can get a head start on doing it when he wakes up.  Colin Cowherd, in speaking of Peyton Manning as a head coach prospect said, "Peyton doesn't see all the people below him.  He sees the 2 people above him."

All that being said, I don't believe that Ballard is in that type of situation and has earned enough street cred to do things his way without the guy writing the checks trying to interfere with the process.  Irsay, like all owners, is used to having power and influence.  In this particular case, he can relax and let the professionals do their work.

We'll never know the depth of that dynamic in Indy, but it's a true luxury to have a guy we can all put a little faith in for the future of the franchise.

Irsay has his "demons" but I think one thing in his favor is that he not only grew up around the game, he PLAYED it, which has in part led to some of his health issues and, directly as a result of that, his "demons".  He knows the game unlike some of the other owners out there, and I believe he knows when to step in and say his peace and when he just needs to sit back and let the pros do their thing.  That is probably what I like most about him as an owner.......that and the fact he will open up the checkbook when needed.

I think Irsay knows what he had in NaPolian, and I think he sees the same things in Ballard.  I don't believe he EVER had that same feeling about Grigs, although he seemed to like him a lot personally.  But I see him giving Ballard a long leash, and I think for the most part he will let Ballard do his thing.  Drafting 2 All-Pros in one draft, which has rarely ever been done (what was it, like 5 or 6 times?), will buy you some serious street cred.  Which brings me to why this draft is so interesting because if he makes a move UP to draft a QB like some are saying he might, it will either turn the tide against him or elevate him to the stratosphere.

Should be entertaining to see what happens.

  7. OK OK OK.  I'm gonna fangirl a little bit.

Just had a little ditty on Kinlaw, who won't work out but is on the field, and man this guy can play for my team any day.  For those that missed it, they said he has dealt with homelessness and he said he had many chances to "fall victim".  He said he didn't eat at college his first couple of days because he didn't have any money and he didn't realize that the food was included in his tuition.  Then the reporter said he told her that he realizes he is blessed and that sometimes he doesn't feel like he deserves "all of this".  I mean, how many times do you hear a guy in his position and at his age say something like that?  This guy seems pretty humble and built from the fire.  I don't think much is going to phase him at the next level.  Would love to have him.

It's likely not a big issue now, but will it become a reason to frequently miss games three years from now.   Pick 13 needs to be a player that is regularly available and can be so into his next contract, IMO.

COULD be.  Of course many of these guys are dealing with nicks and such.  So long as it isn't anything major it shouldn't be anything that a little off-season rest and rehab can't cure.  BTW, he managed to play all 12 games last season.  Of course if it turns out to be major then sure stay away.

no prob. if you're interested in seeing who the best mockers are from the last two years, here's the ratings/rankings.

    https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/accuracy/mock-drafts.php

Holy Cow!  Charlie Campbell was graded highest last year, so I looked at his mock.  Could it be any more perfect?  He did a 3 round mock (last updated 2/24) and here is what he has right now:

    1) Javon Kinlaw

2a) Jordan Love (doubt he lasts this long but who knows???)

    2b) Cole Kmet

    3) Stanford Samuels III, CB, Fla St

Probably not very likely given the need for QB but that right there would be a freakin awesome start to the draft for Ballard & Co.  Two for the offense, two for the defense.  I know it's not a WR, but a TE could give whomever the QB is another weapon too, and it's a deep WR draft so they may be able to get a guy like Tyler Johnson later on.  I would be SO excited for a draft like this, but I just don't think it'll happen.  Then again.......

  10. I like it but you'll no doubt get a lot who don't.  Most would say that if you are trading up it needs to be for a QB.  I would argue that if the guy you like is there and you can get him, do it regardless of position.  Brown could impact the defense much like Nelson did the offense.

    Be prepared for some blowback.

It's not that different than the other mainstream big boards. And the CBS mocks are no worse than others. Canfora was top 10, and Trapasso 15ish in mock scores last year. They are the best typically from CBS. Kiper was 50ish and Buckie was 70ish... If anything, ESPN and NFL.com are worse. A few of their guys are decent. Guys from Walter placed 1st and 2nd last year which was impressive.

Thanks for the tip.  I will check them out.

CBS is probably one of the worst out there, I would not put a lot of weight in their words.

Well, that's personal preference I guess.  I have always like them because of the way they have it arranged and they also use multiple analysts.  Let's see what other sites like NFL.com have to say.  Just giving information.  Of course it's going to have zero to do with where GM's draft.

  13. I would agree on most point and I like our GM.  Seems like a pretty heady and patient guy, even if sometimes a little TOO conservative.  He just doesn't strike me as a big risk-taker type and I would be VERY surprised if he made a move to trade up for one of the QB's.  And if he did, I could only see the likes of Burrow or Tua being involved, with an outside shot at Herbert.  But if he DID make a move up for Love or one of the others, then I would just defer to his draft brilliance.  He has earned that thus far.  Of course, as I put it in another thread, his future will be ominously tied to that decision, for better or worse.  And because he would be giving up draft capital, it might even overshadow some of the good decisions he has already made, right or wrong.

I think Jordan Love seems like a good "kid".  I think he's got a live arm and an effortless throwing motion.  I will readily admit there is a lot of upside with him.  And a small part of me would be sort of intrigued at the Colts drafting him (possibly because he is a QB and the Colts need a franchise guy?).  But there are also a lot of questions, maybe too many for me.  I personally don't think he's a generational talent and, IMHO, that is the only type I would consider trading UP for.  But, as I said, if Ballard truly believes it then I'm on board that train and will hope like hell he is STILL the smartest guy in the room.

If he sees it the same way I do, then he will hype it up, get others to create a run on QB's, and leave more bacon for the feast at 13 (or lower if he decides to trade back and acquire more draft capital for '21........Lawrence anyone?).

  14. I think they do a nice job each year and they have multiple analysts and use an aggregate to rank players.  They don't see any other QB's other than Burrow and Tua ranked in the top 19, and Herbert is #20.  I don't think it's a good idea to reach for a QB just because he's a QB.  I have always thought its best to get the BPA.  If that happens to be a QB, then so be it.  But don't just grab a guy because he's a position of need when better overall players are still on the board.  That CAN work out for you but often it does not.  And by NO MEANS do you trade UP to grab such a player.  That is a recipe for disaster.  For the record, they have Herbert at 20, Love at 33, and Eason at 34.  The next QB on the board?  Fromm at 93!
