I think a bigger component of how this young defense does........ Is how well the OFFENSE does

If we can get some leads, and keep this defense from being on the field the whole game, the defense will get some legit pass rush opptys.

The great Colts pass rush of the Manning era, was assisted by 3 touchdown leads generated by the offense.......

This defense looks to be built in the same manner

I don't know about 3 touchdown leads but I expect the offense to be very good. It may take a second for Luck to get his groove back but when he does he's a top 5 QB in the league. He's going to have the best pair of TE's of his career to work with. TY Grant and Rogers are potentially the best group of WR's he's had. Grant will be solid but Chester has to stay healthy. The OL should be the best unit he's had in front of him with interior vastly improved interior. Luck won't have constant pressure in his face and can step up into a pocket. What?  The whole offensive unit is excited about the new system we get to see Sunday.

Turbin's mistake and Macks hamstring have left the RB room a question mark. We need to get Mack healthy. The number 2 guys is an unproven rookie who has shown promise but still a rookie. There isn't much behind him at least until week 5.  Our 3rd back hasn't looked the part in the preseason. Then Michael is a journeyman who's bounced around the league never really caught on anywhere. The RB room isn't a disaster just yet. We added McNichols to the PS and have brought in Toussaint for a look just in case. I think we will be fine and Mack has a break out year.

The only thing that can shut down the offense is injuries. If we can stay healthy the offense will make the D's job a lot easier. Some have forgotten how good Andrew Luck is at playing this game. The offensive pieces around him and certainly in front of him are improved. I wasn't sure for a minute but listening to him then seeing him gain confidence with each snap in the preseason. The best from number 12 is still to come and Colts nation we have the best seats in the house. I can't freaking wait for kickoff on Sunday.

Yeah, that's the plan.  Not that we saw any indication that he's capable of doing it during the preseason.  I just hope he can hold on to the ball.  If not, they need to move on.

We added Jeremy McNichols to the PS. The pass catching scat back has a role in this O. If Hines can't do the job I bet we see McNichols take that spot. I try not to get to caught up in what happens in preseason games. I hope Hines can get it right starting Sunday but if he puts it on the carpet he's gotta go.

Am I the only one that prefers Skai to Walker even when Walker is healthy?

I'd like to see Walker play a little before making that call. Do we know how much weight he's carrying? Skai is probably the play on passing downs. I liked what I saw from Zaire vs the run. I am very interested to see what we the different packages we use.

The only thing I can ask you is how you coached the parents?  I didn't coach football but I have coached baseball for T-Ball and Pee Wee leagues for a few years and always had a problem with the parents. The kids were great and a pleasure to be around but some of the parents were words I can't use in this forum.

I love basketball and parents ran me off. Football was different bigger field and they can't get to close for fear of injury. That helped and we had a "Head Coach" who acted more like the team manager took care of equipment and kept the parents off of us as much as possible. He happened to be an attorney by day I don't know that was his edge or what. We had assistants come and go but Bill was with us for six straight years. He handled all the parent issues Brian ran the O I had D and ST's aside from being cornered in the parking lot a few times hearing how little johnny should be MLB Bill was very effective keeping parents at bay.

I have to say I really ejoyed reading this post AKC. Football hasn't changed much over the yrs. You dominate on the line, win in the trenches, & bring down the other QB as often as you can or at least give him frequent love tabs anyway. LOL!

If you don't mind me asking, how old are the kids you coach? I respect people that can teach others & impart knowledge along the way. Yeah, you learn most by failure no question. A healthy mixture of patience, tough love, & renewed motivation to get better every week. Seriously though AKC, major props for showing your students how to handle adversity the right way.

Exactly, Ballard is a straight shooter who owns his mistakes & doesn't dwell on the missteps. INDY will win under Ballard & Reich. Both gentlemen bring stability & calmness & you can't put a price on those character traits.

I coached my son's Pop Warner team from when he was 7yrs old until he started high school. There were 3 of us who son's managed to stay the same size. We had a core of kids that played together into high school. I don't know if you are familiar with Pop Warner but weight matters as much as age.

After a year away one of the coaches and myself started coaching the mighty mites. That's 7-9 year olds under 100lbs at the start of the season under 109 at the end. That's the best age I think. The boys are old enough to learn the game and young enough to let you teach. We run our version of the double wing on offense and a 5-3 on D. They have a play book for O and on D have gap responsibilities set the edge etc

I love it. The older boys like to clown me for saying the same things year after year. They have  all heard the winning is easy but losing... the difference between losing and getting beat, if one guy runs the whole team better take off, clapping the last guy in.  They get it all. The other coach loves it when the team has to do up downs for jumping off side while hearing how we may not win every game but we will not beat ourselves. It's amazing the football you can get out of 8 and 9 year old kids.

  6. I don't know who Keefer is maybe he's in the know but I don't think Wilkins or Moore start.  I'd prefer Wilkins but think we may play it safe and give Michael the start. Wilkins very well could still lead the RB's in touches. Moore will see some time  but think Walker is back at practice. If he can practice all week I think he starts. The rookie starters I see are Nelson and Leonard if Mack's the only guy out.  Turay may start now that he's healthy but it has been Hunt this preseason. Turay we see a lot of action either way.

Jeremy McNichols is only 22 years old

    Born:December 26, 1995 (age 22)

    Long Beach, California

    Height:5 ft 9 in (1.75 m)

    Weight:212 lb (96 kg)

He is down to 205lbs trying to regain the explosiveness he had back at Boise St. He maybe a guy we are looking at to fill Hines role if he can't get it together. That would make sense. He had 103 receptions and handled KO duties at Boise St too. The signing make sense to me now.

McNichols was extremely productive his 2 years as a starter at Boise after Ajayi moved on to the NFL.

He was considered a steal in the 6th round last year and it gives me pause he couldn't make the RB hungry Bucs (last year) or 49ers (this year).....

Perhaps that whole change of scenery thing will help....?

I was a fan when he was a Bronco liked him going into the draft too. I have been impressed since he hit the bigs. He didn't do much when we played 2 carries 5 yards 2 reps 10 more. I caught SF v Rams I think is who they played and gave him work He went 10 carries for 28 yds in that one. He's another little guy 205lbs. I have not heard Ballard's profile for RB's but he may like the smaller players.

I had an eye Brian Hill from the same draft. He has every down potential or the between the tackles guy in a committee at 6'1 220lbs. He got us 8 for 38 yards and led the Bengals this preseason 17 carries 87 yards adding 70 more and a score receiving.  I also thought Josh Adams the rookie in Philly looked good. He led Philly in rushing.  I'm an Irish fan so Adams was my guy.  He ended up on their PS and Hill is back on the Falcons PS squad. They are team that drafted him last year.

Ballard obviously saw something in McNichols and I remember him tearing it up at Boise St.  Maybe he can find his mojo again. I would love to hear Ballard's profile for the RB position.

I'm not upset about Simon being gone.  It just made no sense to keep him as long as they did.  If Simon would have gotten cut earlier, he could have latched on with another team.  Who knows?

Ballard spoke to that it was on him he loves Simon thinks he's a heck of a football player he really wanted it to work. They had a long talk over the summer he held on too long hoping it'd be different but at the end of the day it just didn't work you have to have speed coming off that edge It was one the toughest decision he's had to make and it sticks with him that one hurts. He laid it out there opened more then he had to. If his feelings weren't  sincere I was fooled. If Simon is 100% from the neck injury he won't have trouble finding a job nobody has enough pass rushers.

I'm sure the "genius" has a plan on stopping the Bengals.

    You have to trust ballard.

Somebody wants to be sarcastic but doesn't quite understand Ballard's job. The genius isn't the guy who will develop the plan to stop the Bengals that would be the DC Eberflus with the assistance of his position coaches.

Sanders played for a staff who didn't care about size. All they cared about was whether or not you could play. This staff and GM are a little different. But of course we know the hit man Sanders was a baller so you have to have some sensibility to what you prefer versus a guy bringing real value at a lesser size.

No one is going to mistake Farley for Sanders. I get where you are coming from and Ballard's always on the look out. I think it's unlikely we find that upgrade this year.

  12. 33 minutes ago, krunk said:

I'm okay with Farley, but I have noticed Ballard and staff are sort of particular about size if the position requires size. Kenny Moore is a nickel back so there is presidence for 5'9" players at that spot. On the flip side I see every safety we have including the backups is 6 ft or better. Farley is the only one less than that. There is presidence for 5ft 11 at safety also, but it seems they have a preference for 6ft players on the back end that stands out. It's not a big deal to me but Ballard is conscious of this stuff.

Did you add 2" for playing at Notre Dame? Seriously I know Ballard has his profiles and likes his numbers more then most.  He has said other physical attributes are weighed in too. Milton runs in the 4.3's and he is not quite 5'11" Hairston is a sliver under 6'0. He measures at 5'117 about the same size as Farley. I know they are corners he's a Farley's a S.

I have no doubt if it were between Farley and 6'1 player X for a roster spot and everything else was equal CB would take the bigger guy.  For that to happen player X has to come a long. Farley is pretty solid back there. He's certainly not irreplaceable or going to the pro bowl but he's solid depth. I don't see him being replaced off waivers I think he's safe. Did I mention he went to Notre Dame?

  13. 3 hours ago, krunk said:

I think between Ridgeway, Tyquan Lewis, and Autry we are good at 3 tech. I don't expect major moves at that spot in the draft. Could be wrong. I could see us taking an extra DE though.

It stinks Lewis is injured there was a buzz starting in camp about him getting after the QB at 3 tech.  I am ready to see these guys go on Sundays.  I wish Q would figure things out IDK if I've mentioned I like Turay a little

Do we know how close Walker is to being ready?

  14. 1 hour ago, krunk said:

On a side note I'm wondering if they have plans on replacing Mathis Farley? This staff likes to be big on the back end. At least 6 ft or better. Right now we have 5 safeties.

That would surprise me more than the Simon cut. Ballard isn't rigid when it comes to his player profile look at K. Moore. Farley is the right age and is a home grown guy we watched grow up. He seems well thought of by Ballard and the coaches. The kid can play he had a good preseason.

Muhammed looks as strong as he is quick it's easy to see why we grabbed him. The tape above was almost exclusively vs 4th quarter players but he showed multiple pass rush moves, good get off and a motor. I like it can't wait to see him vs Cinny.

  15. I'm on board with Ballard and agree with his basic philosophy on how to build a team. Build through the draft and focus on controlling the line of scrimmage. You protect your QB and get after your opponents. It's not complicated.  He explained his philosophy and he follows the plan. There aren't many surprises but when there are he explains his actions and how they relate to the plan.

He has a laid out his profile of the type of players he is looking for. He wants more then just talent. He understands the importance of building a strong locker room. I love the fact he wants to build it through the draft and isn't afraid to put the young guys on the field. He gets free agency and as a result is very cautious signing free agents.

I coach kids and shockingly we don't always win. When we lose our first game I always say the same thing winning is easy anyone can win. When we lose that's when we find out who we are. We have had a few opportunities to see who Ballard is. He has been a stand up guy that will take the heat and share the success.

Ballard is a smart likeable guy who understands and loves the game. I don't think many would argue that. I think his philosophy is sound c and he has an eye for talent.  I love what the guy has done so far. I believe the guy will get us back on top. Remember we have not even started his second season. It will be his first with his coaches and the franchise QB.

I was just watching part of that Cincy preseason game. Man Turay has some serious get off! Muhammad reminds me of Turay in some aspects as well. Going to give this a chance.

The only question about Turay is his health. It was a shoulder that held him back at Rutgers. If he can stay healthy we have something. I don't know much about Mohammed and have not had time to look. Everything I hear sounds encouraging.

Do you think we bring Delaire back when Lewis hits the IR? Maybe we look for a bigger body. I was hoping we'd bring in a RB. I'm not a fan of Michael but I may have to be for 4 weeks.

A little surprised we haven't done anything at WR but that'd probably be at Pascal's expense. I like that kid want to see him get a shot. I knew it'd be tough to find OL help.

I'm not surprised we are giving the LB's and CB's a chance. I thought CB liked what we have there. I was concerned about Milton when I saw we added a DB. He's another one I think I like more then most. I think we'd miss him on ST's. We needed the help at S with the injuries our starters are coming back from. We could still see some changes but this team is almost all Ballard's guys now. It's amazing how bare the cupboard was left.

I'm not sure if they sere NC caliber.   I wish Josh Adams and St  Brown would have stayed another year

We have a pretty favorable schedule this year The big games are in South Bend until the final week when we go to USC. I think that gives us a great shot at the playoff.

Our D looked like the best unit on the field last night for either team. We stopped the run and got after the QB.  Yoon  has become a big time kicker another advantage. A good kicker can be huge. I hate big kick returns hopefully that gets squared away. It should we have the athletes. Wimbush is the key his legs will give teams headaches but  his arm will decide it ultimately. He didn't play great but I thought he looked a lot better then last year.

To be honest I think we have a shot every year but this one more than most.

I knew. I was missing one we play at Virginia Tech. That is never any easy place to get a W. We will get a look at them vs FSU, who will come to ND.  I think they play tomorrow.

And Michigan's front seven is no joke.   I was happy with how the new starters on the line played

I think the Irish are legit contenders for a National Championship this year. We will go as far as Wimbush can take us and as you said he's going to have to get better throwing the ball to get where we want to be.

Should be a great year to be a Hoosier Luck is back the Irish look good the Pacers are on the rise and down in Bloomington we get Romeo for a year.

Chris Ballard has shown a tremendous amount of faith in Tarell Basham to eventually  start producing. Delaire and Simon both outplayed him in August by a clear margin and they got cut. The regular season starts in a few days and this year he is back in his familiar base 4-3 DE.  He has no excuses now, its time for him to step up and repay the trust Chris has shown in him.

Also, looking at the guys at the right d-end spot, it looks like Turay is going to be asked to take on quite an amount of snaps. Probably more than we envisaged given he is a raw/developmental player. Hopefully he can produce as he has a high ceiling.

But gosh we are so young on D.

Turay is going to surprise so people his health is the only thing that concerns me. I don't think the staff thinks of him as a development player. As for Basham there is no GM that tosses in the towel on a kid after one season. He should get a lot of live reps this year which is the best way to learn.

Muhammad the guy we just signed took Delaire's roster spot. He will be part of the DE rotation too. I'm hoping we can bring Delaire back when Lewis goes to the IR. I liked the guy and would like to see of he could carry his play to the regular season. Ballard has explained why Simon was released

    Why is Coleman interesting?

He got dumped by Cleve and now dumped by Buffalo.

    So what makes him interesting?

There is interest in any skill player taken the first 2 days of the draft. I thought we might take a WR too had my eye on Pettis but  Grant is a solid player He was a complimentary piece during his time in Washington. Ozzie who is one of the better GM's in the league thought enough of him to try to lock him up with a 24M deal. Grant will see a larger role with us which is what he was looking for.

We could have drafted any of the WR's in this draft and Grant is still the WR2 week 1. The guy isn't flashy but is solid and catches the ball. He will run solid routes and be where he supposed to be. He does all the little things like blocking for our RB's. I think he will win the fan base over pretty quickly could remind some of a poor mans 87.

I think he's easily the best WR we've lined up across from TY since Reggie was here. That's not saying a lot really. We added Ebron this offseason too so teams are not going to be able to lock in on TY.  We are a little thin  at WR after Rogers for the most part due to injuries.

There is no doubt we will be watching cuts and if Ballard thinks he can improve the group he will do it.  I don't see anything interesting about Coleman. I'd be surprised if that is an attitude CB brings into the locker room.  Floyd was ok a few years ago but is on the downward side of his career.

We won't be signing a WR2 or even a WR3 after cuts. The guy we bring in will be young with a high ceiling that can help on special teams. Hilton Grant and Rogers are the top 3 WR's this year unless there's an injury.  I personally hope Pascal gets a shot to show what he can do. I like what he's done so far.

Why wouldnt Hunt fit? He made several nice stops on the interior and penetration in each preseason game. They didnt even make him play the last preseason game. I think he will be here. Theyve made room for a vet or two to stay here temporarily.

I guess I was looking more at his age and getting to the QB maybe a little bit from his time in a 4-3  in Cinny I like Hunt more trying to fit RD in then anything

Just saw Mack close to being a Bear
