Not obligated in a legal sense of course. We won't get penalized or anything for being over the cap regardless of what Grigson does.
But, like I wrote before, it's about Grigson being perceived as competent or incompetent by the general public (not just Colts fans). I see Grigson being ridiculed on plenty boards, and frankly.. it annoys me.
I don't want a GM who hands out big contracts and looks like a fool because the players don't perform on the level that those contracts demands and easily could be replaced by better and less injury-prone players.
Exactly. If Polian wasn't such a terrible GM himself and had actually drafted good, we'd have more proven players who would need to be payed, and it would be hard because we'd have Grigson's over-payed players eating up cap. It's ridiculous how much money he gives these stop gap FA's.
-
Only reasoning I can see for not including safety is because it's a spot we've been used to seeing mediocre production from. It's almost as if it's a position we don't seem to value.
-
They have had one losing season under Rex and made it to two AFC champions games.....not exactly shambles.
Honestly, Tannenbaum and his attachment to Sanchez is what brought him down. And his attachment to another terrible QB in Geno, will do him in if he doesn't wake up. When Ryan keeps his mouth shut and doesn't have a butt fumbling QB, he's a pretty good coach. I still think his offenses will always be mediocre though. He'll always have just enough to get by and try to wing it on the back of his defense.
But lets not overrate him either. Going to the AFC Championship isn't that hard, especially back then. I hate to say it, but we're the inferior conference. I'd like to see him make 2 consecutive NFC championships with Mark Sanchez vs. Quality defenses.
-
I don't think we should or will tag him, and I definitely don't want to pay him anywhere near top 5 money. My offer would be four years, $30m. I could see another team offering him $9m/year in FA, but I'm not sure. Part of it will depend on what the Dolphins and Pats do with Grimes and Talib, and what Verner gets.
Yeah 4 years, $30 million sounds fair. That's perfect money for a REALLY GOOD player who isn't in the elite tier. Only reason there would be to tag him is if we could gurantee a Superbowl victory this season. That would make him expendable. But we'll need him for the foreseeable future so he has to be paid.
-
Let's not start applauding Grigson already. He still has a habit of loading contracts with money for mediocre players. Yes, I'm looking at you Laron Landry, RJF, and Greg Toler. Let's call it for what it is. We are just lucky we don't have many young elite players with expiring contracts. We have Wayne and Mathis who are on their way out soon anyways. Who else do we have to give that money too? We have no elite players at any other positions. There is Luck, but we still have time before his contract is up.
Point blank, there's no one good enough to give the money too. It isn't the "brilliant work" of Grigson.

They are allowed to negotiate until sometime in July. Doesn't mean Davis has to accept any offer. He can play the season on the tag, at $11m, then get a long term deal from someone next season.
The tag is supposed to create incentive on both sides to do a long term deal, but if we were to tag Davis, I think it would penalize us and give him a bigger platform for a big deal next year.
How big of a deal do people think he's getting? Yeah he's good and he's played good against some of the best WR's in the league, but some people make it seem like he's a top 5 corner.

You know which team out of the QB needy teams is most likely to pass on a QB. Jacksonville Jaguars with Gus Bradley.
He will get Clowney at pick No.3, then turn around get Garoppollo in round 2, and build a D to win much like when he was DC with the Seahawks. That is just my gut feeling.
I swear you could be a mind reader lol. I've been thinking the exact same thing since he got to coach Garropollo in the senior bowl. I think they would pass on all 3 QB's even if they all fell to them.
-
People are forcing these prospects to be what they want them to be. Bortles' coach came out and said he's not an Andrew Luck, he isn't a once in a decade talent. People want so badly for Manziel to be Russell Wilson, but he's not. And as Daniel Jeremiah said, Bridgewater lacks the wow factor. If you want to talk franchise QB's, then I say look at Mettenberger, Murray(with development), McCarron, and Jimmy Garropollo.
But I see Houston trading for Ryan Mallet and drafting a young QB in the later rounds. And I need someone to sell me on Bortles. All I saw was him making a bunch of quick one read throws (usually screens). Probably has to do with the system he played in, but it just seems like he skyrocketed as soon as Mariota said he was staying. Seriously though, Bortles is the guy I get the least. Someone explain the hype to me.

But Preston Brown is a sleeper. Good speed and makes a lot of tackles. DAT can be the new scat back and PR, possibly KR too. Van Der Kamp is for the future, since we don't know what's going on with Mcafee.

If we don't pick up Sanders I think the guy with the most potential to impact right away would be Moncrief. I like everything I've seen of him. I don't like Alen Roinson as he seems too much like Rogers which isn't bad but why pick two of the same type of player. In other words I think we already have a Robinson on the roster.
That's actually a good assessment on Robinson. But the thing about Moncrief is that he's not the greatest route runner. But I'd take Jordan Matthews over all of them. But whatever receiver we get needs to be at least 6'3". We have enough under-sized receivers.
-
Take any safety but Dion Bailey. He isn't a safety in the NFL. He mostly played LB at USC and he wasn't even great there. If you want a good safety get Deone Bucannon. Or McGill who can play CB and Safety.
-
Corner is the biggest need that needs to be fixed through the draft. No one should disagree with that. We've tried to pair all these different people with Davis, and it never works. Cassius Vaughn wasn't good, and neither was Toler this year.
Center is the biggest need overall, but not in terms of the draft. We can get one in FA.
WR is a luxury, but if a guy like Matthews or Robinson falls to us, we can't pass. No one knows how Reggie will be coming back. Besides, our receiving corps could use some size.
But if you talk in terms of the draft our needs are:
1. Cornerback
2. Safety
3.OLB
4. DT/DE
5. RB
-
I will have my barf bag ready
I'm hoping they take someone who is overrated, like Travis Benjamin.
-
And I can't see us getting a line man. The Colts are not starting a rookie lineman. If we get one, it'll be later on for depth. We can get a center from FA. Everything else on the line is fine
I am dreading when the Colts #1 pick comes up and the players that are still on the board that we *could* have had. Nothing we can do but it will keep coming up over and over. Grig really needs to have a good draft.
And I'm convinced he'll just trade up and get a bunch of good players. Our 6th and 7th round picks are probably gone. And maybe a future 2015 pick. I'm hoping he'll get 5 starters.
-
Hard to say if Richardson trade has been bad or not.
Sure, he may not be worth a 3rd pick in the NFL draft, butt there's no guarantee that our 1st rounder to the Browns would be great either. As much as it may be another Deandre Hopkins, Bob Sanders, or Clay Matthews, it may also be a Tony Ugoh, Quinn Pitcock, or Jamaal Anderson.
The way I think about it is like this. If any of the top RB prospects of this draft come out and out perform him, then it's safe to say the trade was terrible. But Richardson may very well have been the worst RB in his class. We forget that Ballard was drafted 4 rounds later and only finished 100 or so yards short of his rookie total with less starts and less snaps.
Or to put in into perspective another way. Compare whatever RB is taken first to Trent and that player is essentially who we traded away for Trent. Or whatever player the Browns select with our pick.

I wanna sign Byrd then draft a CB to replace Toler
But ik it won't happen I don't think the colts ever want a real ball hawk S
Which is terrible thinking. Safety help is the one thing lacking. How often do you see our safety's running over and helping the corners?
-
I was legit I wouldn't change McGill to S I'd draft one or the other to play with Davis and Butler
If he FAILS as a CB, then he could convert to safety. Or better yet, let McGill play a few snaps at Safety. Grigson loves versalitiy. They both need some polishing though. SBJ is the better tackler though.
-
Needs to get functionally stronger to jam/re-route and shed blocks. Gives up separation at the break point and gets outmuscled at the catch point. Inconsistent, leaky, underpowered tackler. Instincts and anticipation are lacking. Technique needs to be coached up -- opens the gate and gets beat off the snap. Leaves production on the field -- in position, but doesn’t make the play. Questionable tackle and ball production -- registered just 24 tackles as a junior and logged just 12 PBUs and two INTs from 2012-13. Marginal run strength as a returner. Shared reps as a junior.
Bottom Line Lean, fluid, fast, finesse cover man whose raw physical ability and testing numbers belie frustratingly uneven performance. Has starter-caliber athleticism and will buoy his stock when the stopwatches come out, but poor instincts, tackling and tape are reasons for pause. From the article on Purifoy. Like I said, the tape is more bad or average than good. He'll get beat more times than anything else. And he isn't physical like we need. Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins would feast on him. And I doubt he would want to see Justin Hunter in Tennessee.

Not to mention getting pressure on the QB makes it that much easier on the secondary. It's actually smart to re-up now so that when it comes time for Mathis and Robert to leave, we're not scrambling around thinking "OMG what are we going to do". Draft tip #134 Draft for the Future
-
Considering the aging Mathis is the best OLB by far and the only real pass rushing threat at this point, OLB is a need.
This might seem to be an odd position to bolster for the Colts, who finished ninth in points allowed last year and have Robert Mathis – who led the league with 19.5 sacks – locked up. But Mathis will be 33 in February and had little help, with Jerrell Freeman following way behind Mathis with 5.5 sacks. The Colts used their 2013 first-round pick on Bjoern Werner, but he had little impact and needs time to develop. Indianapolis cannot continue to depend on Mathis to be the sole disruptor on the front line
You are absolutely right on that regard. That quote is straight from the article and it's probably the most important thing they said. Just like an offense needs weapons, so does the defensive line. I don't think it necessarily needs to be an OLB but someone who can get pressure. Even if it's a 3-4 DE. We need something else besides just Mathis. All teams are going to do is double team his all day.
-
I think picking up a mid-tier guard from FA for competition and depth is the most logical solution, but if we don't do that I think we should draft one. I don't think we're all set at guard because we have no depth, Thomas could get injured again, and Thornton struggled (which is to be expected from a rookie not playing his natural position.)
True. Depth is what makes teams like the Bengals and Seahawks good. I wouldn't draft a guard high though. You never draft for depth high. If you draft in the first 3 rounds, you're looking for starters. Yankey could be gone at the top of the 2nd. I'd be okay with taking someone late though, if we're talking depth.
-
And it will continue to be beat; it drives me insane we don't have a 1st round pick ... every time I see an article about what we need or see the players we are potentially missing out on it brings back bad memories, and I go back and take my frustrations out on the horse carcass
It does too. A lot of times I'll look at a mock draft and skip right to the second round because I don't want to be slapped in the face with the truth. I hope Grigson makes up for it with an amazing draft though. He'll probably have to break a little bank in terms of draft picks to really get the players this team needs. I think are 7th and 6th round picks could be gone. We'll end up taking 5 total players from rounds 2-5. But maybe they'll be 5 really good players. I would consider it water under the bridge if we came out with McGill, Robinson, De'Anthony Thomas, Coleman, and a WR like Allen or Moncrief. Doesn't have to be those EXACT players but close to that
-
Yeah I laughed when they said "The trade was a disaster". Yes, and Water is wet. Couldn't have been a more obvious statement lol.
-
They basically talk about how the Colts are in a hole without their first round pick, which is a pretty obvious statement. But they go on to list the needs, and 2 players we should target. It's interesting to see a few of the names that people around here like though.
Let the Keith McGill hype train begin :disco: But I just want to see him make some big hits just so we can call him Keith "McKILL". Also the idea of Allen Robinson falling is a real possibility. How would you guys feel about him?
Better TE: Fleener or Allen
in Colts Football
Posted
Look at it like this, if Fleener was so much better than losing Allen wouldn't have been viewed as a major loss. On top of that, Allen was the starter to begin with. When Allen comes back, he will get the start. I guarantee it.
