  1. I think if we hit a HR in the draft on defense, we'll be fine. We absolutely need to take defense with at least 2 of our first 3 picks though. Something I would like to do, is trade down to the middle of the 2nd and pick up an extra 3rd. I have confidence that Grigson could hit on 3 of 4 picks if we had two 2nds and two 3rds. If they were 3 defensive players, we'd have a formidable team and it'd put us closer to the Pats and Broncos levels this year (although we already closed the gap a bit).

Just my two cents, but three hits on defense in the draft would absolutely improve this team and bring us to the SB level. If we don't, we'll have to rely on Luck again to carry the team.

  2. As much as I like Jake Fisher, I would be mad if we took him in the 1st. I'd risk him falling to us in the 2nd or falling close so we could trade up a few spots and nab him there. As far as our 1st round pick, I'm going to predict Arik Armstead. He's a solid 3-4 DE who would instantly upgrade our D-Line, there is a very good chance he'll be there at 29 (although not guaranteed), and he is a perfect fit for us.

  3. Very good signing. If this is it then that's fine, but I would love to try to finish it off with knighton. Andre will make us competitive Vs the Pats for sure. Hopefully in 3 years that Andre is here, we win a SB. So he gets one and because we have a much better chance with him here.

  4. Do you know who we would be if some of the posters in here were our GMs. The Raiders, we would be the Raiders.

When you think about it this year, we are the raiders of free agency last year. We have lots of cap space and are paying for players past their prime. We may not be overspending, but maybe we should be spending a bit more on more quality FA's. Target 3 or 4 FA's and draft around them this year. Gore, Franklin and Knighton is a solid example. Might even have enough left over to add a Cecil Shorts.

  5. You can say the Colts aren't in the top half of the league in terms of their overall roster but the proof is in the pudding. They've advanced another round each year since they've made the playoffs under Pagano/Grigson and last year made it to the "final 4". You can talk about being completely reliant on the draft but all of the top teams in the league have been built through the draft. The Patriots have. The Colts during the Polian years. The Packers, etc etc. The Colts have now done exactly what you are purposing. Build through the draft while supplementing themselves with players that will maybe push them "over the top" while they can still afford them. Once Luck and TY come up for their paydays, you won't see the Colts dabbling like this in free agency because they won't have the money to do so.

I hear what you are saying but let's realize a few things here.

    1. There is no guarantee that Franklin (or Cole for that matter) will pan out.

    2. The Colts offensive line is actually pretty solid in my eyes if they are healthy. (Castanzo, Mewhort, Holmes, Herremans, Reitz)

It's been a heck of a ride these last three years and I'm proud of this team. Grigson has done a great job through the draft making us competitive. As I told CrazyColt though, I think he is handicapping us through Free Agency. We are slapping the proverbial bandaid on here thinking these moves will push us over the top IMO. The Herremans pick in particular bugs me because he's 32, he's a bandaid that will keep a young guard from developing, and if he does well next year we may not get him back. Also, he could start declining at any time. I don't think Franklin is a elite G. I think he's as good as Mewhort, maybe slightly better, but you 100% know what you are getting out of him, and it will stay that way for 5 years. I'll happily pay 8 million a year for 5 years for an extra jack mewhort on the other side.

You are also absolutely right, once Luck and TY are signed, we can't do this again. It would of been nice to get 4 or 5 guys like a Mcphee, Knighton, Franklin, Shorts combo along with Gore that are young and will produce while our next draft class is growing. You also have to remember, as good as Grigson is with the draft, he could have a bad one. If we bust on two of our first three picks I'd like to say, at least the Free agents can make up for that draft class. Again, 26-28 year old free agents are crucial because they give your draft class the opportunity to grow without being relied upon right away and outs in case they are busts.

  6. I like the Langford pick. he will likely transition to a DE in the 3-4 defense at 6-6 313lbs he will be a great addition. I sense that Redding def wont be returning.

If he's a backup and we go after Knighton then I have no problem with the move. Sadly, I get the feeling he will start for us and Knighton will go elsewhere. I will happily eat crow if I'm wrong, I just don't feel it yet though. Yesterday took a lot out of me.

  7. Who's to say that the Colts aren't already replicating that this year? They made it to the AFC Championship last season. That would indicate they are only a few pieces away. It doesn't matter that these free agents won't be here in 5 or 6 years. All the Colts need to do is have these players "fill in the gap" so to speak while simultaneous draft classes get experience and mature. The reason why New England has had such success, even recently, is because they have had the same core coach and QB among other players in place for over a decade. The Colts are now in year four of such a process. Those players you mentioned on New England weren't the star-caliber players they are overnight either.

It's funny how you mention a player like Orlando Franklin and reason to sign him because he's a younger player. The Colts in all likelihood would have had to VASTLY overpay him for what he brought to the table. And yes, they've overpaid for other free agents as well. But what the Colts are trying to do is win now with the window they have in terms of finances available. Trust me, you don't want to be stuck in a bad spot down the road and not have enough money for a true star player on your team because you signed Orlando Franklin back in 15'.

We are probably a few pieces away, however, we are very top heavy and probably not even in the top half for best overall roster on offense and defense. The problems with these 30 year old bandaids is that 1.) They won't get better only worse 2.) they will be gone within a year or two, so this specific strategy makes you rely completely on building through the draft. I agree with building through the draft, but you should leave yourself some outs in FA in case you miss on some picks. You are right about New England having the Core coach and QB, I can't deny that.

    http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/update/25099473/report-chargers-orlando-franklin-have-five-year-deal-in-place

That is Orlando Franklin's Contract with the Chargers, approximently 5 years, $36.5 Million. We paid Trent Cole $8 million a year. Lets say we paid Franklin 8 Million a year for 5 years to get him from the Chargers, woudn't this be much better than a 32 year old Trent Cole? You protect Luck for 5 years and get a young proven Free Agent. Even if Cherilus or the tackle you draft turns out to be a bust now, at least you covered a key spot on the O-line in Franklin for the next 5 years.

Sorry about the double quote BTW.

  8. Can some one tell me how old these players are i know Gore, Cole, Adams are 30+ with Langford, Reitz and Butler in the late 20s, i feel like we are last yrs Raiders signing older declining players to big money... I still dont see an upgrade either.. Sorry for my negativity i just hate that not a single impact player has been signed... Yet

That is the sentence of all sentences that describes the Colts FA today! We are last year's Raiders! Bingo! Nothing to be happy about. The money isn't real bad, but we're basically wasting it on over the hill guys. Next up, 34 year old Andre Johnson!

  9. There is a reason there are free agents. Most are over rated, over priced and or over the hill. If these free agents were all that good they wouldn't be free agents. Free agents are not designed to build a team from. That is why there is drafting and rookie contracts. The top players who are free agents go where they can get paid the most. The Colts don't need players who are looking to get paid on their last contracts in their careers. You bring up the Patriots? Really? That team has taken years to build and the Colts are just three years old. That is being pretty narrow minded IMO. The Patriots won a super bowl because the Seahawks forgot to do what got them to the super bowl in the first place. You speak about the Patriots. Just how many elite players do you count on that team? Belichick picks players who fit his system. You are over the top with negativity.

This will be my last post for the night as I'm going to bed, but you proved my point here, "The Colts don't need players who are looking to get paid on their last contracts in their careers". Your words. This is why I would sign young free agents with upside. I actually love the Gore signing, but look at Grigson's signings today, only one is under 30 and he is 29. These players are looking to get paid on the last contracts of their careers. Even if you meant all free agents in particular, look at the guys I like and one that Grigson liked as well: McPhee 26, Shorts 27, knighton 28, franklin 26. These guys don't break the bank but they are relatively young. Sign Gore as your Veteran Free Agent, McPhee and Shorts as the young upside guys and Knighton and Franklin as the proven youngsters.

We stunted our growth by not surrounding our draft picks with solid free agents. The draft picks had to step up quickly and take over on offense. Guess what, we haven't really drafted on defense and since most of our defense is FA's that are mediocre, our defense sucks. You are right about why the Pats won a superbowl, but they built a solid team through the draft and then filled it with elite players through FA last year to put them over the top. It took a combination to have a chance to win the SB. As far as elite players, Brady, Gronk, McCourty, (Revis is gone), Sebastian Vollmer has been a monster for them, they also have an elite front 7 on defense combined even if most of the players are near elite status.

The bottom line is that there is little to be happy about when you get a bunch of 30+ year old mediocre players that are bandaids. The only one that has a huge purpose is Gore, and we are literally making no progress. This won't put us over the top and we won't have another chance to sign top players in Free Agency with Luck and Hilton's contracts coming up along with the TE's. We had a chance to build an identity, sign an OL and DL man and then draft the remaining pieces around them, instead we sign a 32 year old G to a one year deal that will do nothing but delay a young guard from learning how to play for us for a year or even worse getting an orlando franklin that is 26 and actually staying with us at a high level for 8-10 years.

If you don't get it by now, I guess we have to agree to disagree. We may not have enough time as a new team yet to completely rebuild our defense, but we could of had 3 or 4 elite guys from free agency by now as our core along with Vontae instead of just Vontae if Grigson would of signed quality over quanity.

  10. Knighton / Jones / Langford would be great.

Absolutely, we'll see if it happens. As I said in an earlier comment, Knighton would fill a huge gaping hole in that swiss cheese defensive line of ours. He's somewhat of a fatty, but he's a talented fatty, and a clear upgrade for us. Also, he's 28, so we could sign him for 3 or 4 years and then see how good he is after the contract if he would want to finish his career here. Win, Win signing if we get him.

  11. Hasn't learned anything in the last three years? I guess winning the GM of the year, taking a 2-14 team to three straight playoffs, two division crowns and a AFC championship game means very little to you. In three seasons he has replaced 49 players and was very competitive. But I get it, you don't see things that are positive, just negative.

I think you used that excuse on this board about 20 other times to defend Grigson. I love Grigson for his drafting, but nothing he has done in Free Agency has helped this team that much. He is awful at it and uses the same strategy every year: Get mediocre FA's for a mediocre price and hope they shine. BTW, nothing in your answer refuted my claims that Grigson doesn't know what he is doing in Free Agency. It just so happens his drafting of Luck and his solid drafting the last three years has covered up his defiencies in Free Agency. You know it and I know it, no elite player or anything close has come out of it yet in Grigson's tenure. He's handicapping this team in one form of adding players to our roster, and it's 100% his fault because of his lack of spending.

We have 3 elite players, a few solid players after that and the rest of the team could be backups on a lot of other teams, mostly the defense. I'm mad because he puled the same thing this year, mediocre spending and basically no improvement in Free Agency. Now we have to depend on the draft to bail us out and improve. We may of made it to AFC Championship game against the Pats, but our overall roster isn't half as talented as theirs. Not just because we're young, Belicheck spent like crazy last year to get over the top and win a SB. This was our year to do that with a full draft and lots of cap space, and we failed to do so.

  12. That's easy to answer. There are some who thinks we need to sign every known free agent across the board. It don't even matter IF they are a free agent or how much money they would take. It's pretty easy to sit behind the computer and run a NFL team.

No one thinks we need to sign every free agent. We just want to sign a couple free agents that will either make our team better or have a lot of upside. How many elite players do we have on the Colts? Honestly? Probably 3. Luck, Hilton, and Vontae. Two we drafted and one we got in a trade. This will be Grigson's 4th year doing free agency and he has one common theme, sign average players and hope they happen to make an impact. Who has our best FA been? Freeman? Toler? Adams? Not that great. Grigson has a chance to sign players like Suh, Franklin, Searcy, McPhee and Knighton that all have a great chance to be great on the Colts.

What does he do? He signs a 32 year old to a 1 year contract as a bandaid instead of franklin. He signs a backup on the rams that will end up being a starter for us instead of a true DT like a Suh or Knighton. We didn't even address the Safety position and I believe Searcy was mentioned but even with all our cap space Grigson went cheap and didn't get him. He was high on McPhee who is 26 and a lot younger than trent cole, but we pay roughly the same as the Bears for a player who is 6 years older.

I'm not saying we had to sign all big names, but Grigson obviously hasn't learned anything from the past 3 years and thinks this mid-card jobber route on the FA's will put us over the top. The closest to a great player we've gotten out of a free Agent is Mike Adams, and that wasn't even during the Free Agency Period last year, it was later and a complete fluke. You can't convince me someone like Suh as good as he is would be a risk to bust here. You get what you pay for and Grigson isn't helping this team in Free Agency. I believe in building through the draft, but you can't just win by drafting. We're a young team, and Grigson has put very little quality talent around Luck in Free Agency these last 4 years. These cheap route is part of the reason we have so many holes. You can't guess every pick right in Free Agency, but it should be quality over quanity. Get a few guys to build around that have a great chance to succeed and build the draft around them, don't keep putting bandaids on this team.

  13. Saints are definitely in the beginnings of a rebuild. I believe if they got the right offer, they'd trade Brees. They are trying to get some solid picks right now it seems as they are having trouble getting under the cap. They won't be doing much in Free Agency. Time to dump some contracts and get young again. Interestingly enough, the Graham trade put them more above the cap if I remember right. They will be in a hole for awhile.

  14. I'm worried too. I just really hope the plan is for him to be a backup. If we want a good defense, we almost have to sign Knighton or Williams. We have to have that big time run stuffer.

Agreed, Knighton would be perfect and if we drafted a 3-4 DE like Arik Armstead, we'd be set at the D-Line. Now it's no stronger than what it was still. We can get a depth pick in the draft if we wanted with actual upside.

  15. I don't mind the other signings as they all had a purpose, but this one is just dumb. You have Knighton and dan williams available (not counting fairley if he's going to cinci), and you take him. Grigson obviously hasn't learned anything from his previous failures in Free Agency. Knighton won't break the bank and he fills a huge gaping hole in this swiss cheese defensive line! So what does he do, signs a backup DT from the Rams scrap heap that will probably end up starting for us. As good as Grigson is in the draft, that's how much he sucks in Free Agency.

    Ridiculous.

  16. I think the main reason why myself and a lot of people here are really bugged by this is that there is no double standard here. You guys know what Stephen A. Smith said and everything like that. The main problem is that the next time an African American in the sports community (doesn't have to be just NFL) says or does something racist against a White person, I guarantee you that Stephen A. Smith will not go on a rant and call him or her a "racist". That's the double standard in this country today and why this situation is so disturbing.

  17. I also think that Grigson has more than likely talked to a lot more than you or me know. Through experience with Grigson there is something we all should know, That we all don't know what he is going to do. He might make a choice today that don't seem right just to follow that up with something that he was working on all along.

Absolutely true. I think he was allowed to talk to 60 players overall and I'm guessing more than a few of them are players we could get in the 1st round. Gordon was just one possibility. The only thing you can get out of it was just that, that it's a possibility. All I know is that we are going to probably get a RB in some shape or form and Gordon is someone that has a better chance than others. We don't know for sure, but it's fun to try and put 2 and 2 together. I honestly can't wait to see what happens in FA and the draft. We have to trust Grigson, he has been very good so far.

  18. Just out of curiosity how do you know what Grigson plans on doing?

I've heard about him talking to Gordon, Coleman and Duke Johnson. He could easily pull the trigger on Gordon if he feels he is the best player available. He did a trade with Richardson for a 1st and he's interested in a bunch of rbs. I wouldn't rule it out. He has interest, that's enough for me to think there's a chance we get him.
