The whole league plays a lot of zones these days and CBs still go high.  According to pff almost every team plays zones more than half the time with the colts being around 60%

Its still important enough to take with our first pick if the right player is there.

the lower round corners ballard has drafted have not been good

The only thing I disagree with is your conclusion. Bradley doesn't run move Cover 6 because he's set in his ways, not because he's limited by personnel.

I also think the safety responsibilities in a split safety defense, like Cover 6, are simpler and require less range than the safety responsibilities in a single high defense, like Cover 3, which Bradley loves. So if we don't have the safeties for Cover 6, then we definitely don't have the safeties for Cover 3. Yet we run a ton of Cover 3.

basically we run cover no one

You are taking this thread somewhere nobody cares about.

For six years, we have gone back and forth because you persistently confront me to tell me what my opinion is.  Now, its that I have contempt for Ballard, and have had it for 6 years.

Maybe you are just a bully, and have confronted me over posts I have made that you didn't like...and all bully's get frustrated when they swing and miss...and the target doesn't back down.

    • When Luck was still playing, I commented that it was not "Grigsys Oline" that got Luck killed, but that him holding the  ball too long was a big contributor, you confronted me (as did others).
    • I said I did not like the Hooker pick...first pick right off...when the forum loved it.  You confronted my over my non-love of the pick.
    • I was not enthused over the Nelson pick...never hated it...just not enthused like the rest of the forum.  I was one of the few posters back then who introduced...introduced...the concept of positional value to many on the forum.  You confronted me over my comments.
    • When Hines was a backup RB, I said I couldn't see why he has a roster spot as a backup RB.  This is when the forum was praising him for "all of the things he could do"  and that he was a star that was just not being used correctly.  You confronted me over my comment about Hines.
    • I commented that JT is exactly the RB he was in college, straight ahead between the tackles mainly big-play fast guy without elite shake and bake.  You've said that me not saying he's elite is some passive shot at Ballard.
    • And throughout those 6 years, I have said that we will never reach the level of perennial playoff contender by picking elite players in less valuable positions, and, that we need playmakers.  That reality has finally hit a lot of members like a 2 x 4 upside the head, because that's all I hardly read anymore, about how we need playmakers.

Maybe bullies just hate it when the target doesn't back down and is a lot more right than wrong.  Must be frustrating.

If you notice, closely if you can, none of those positions are actually CRITICAL of Ballard.  They merely burst a gush bubble that was formed over "his genius".  Please don't confuse bursting a gush bubble with contempt.

I liked the Smith, Leonard, Pitt, JT, Cross, Blackmon, AP, Raimann, and many other picks based upon the combo of skill, need, and draft spot.  Those are not the sexy picks people talk about, so they don't get much press.

Next, since I won't gush over AR until he sustains gushability for a couple of seasons...if he does...you might also confuse my nongushy comments with me trying to find a reason to take a passive passive shot at Ballard because of my "contempt".

it makes some people feel important to be a keyboard bully. they like to hide behind a keyboard and spew out verbal abuse from their safe place behind their keyboard, some of them are not satisfied with their personal  lives and  put on a mask of being a nice person face to face with people. I feel sorry for people like that who have such miserable lives that they enjoy being a keyboard bully

Just a word here, since I probably fall into your negative nancy bucket of forum members.

Addressing weaknesses...focusing on the negative...is fundamental to solving problems and improving. Its not a way of life, its a tactic.  Focusing on the negative, and looking for as many negatives as you can find, solves problems.

Its easy for many of us who have careers in problem solving to divorce problem solving thinking when it comes to enjoying personal life.

Positive mindedness goes towards helping feelings.  And I hope that folks who have that mindset on internet forums don't also choose to see no problems in their personal lives when there may be plenty.

some people cant face reality so they stay positive in la la land

In 7 years name a corner Ballard drafted that could cover worth a darn.

I can name one. Roger's. Small with great speed.

Now we have a 6'3" replacement that we just watched get horribly abused by a big receiver.

Irsay accepts mediocrity. He has his band and money for toys.

ballard has a habit of keeping his draft busts as starters on the team far too long

Anyone with a brain can realize the qb play is the difference between being on the edge of the playoffs and actually getting there. We win 11 games with a more competent qb in 2021 (remember we had a league-leading probowl nominated roster that year).  We nearly won the division with Gardner. Minshew. at qb and half this forum won't even appreciate that fact. All anyone does on here is bash Ballard while praising CJ Stroud. And I get it to an extent. CJ's a hell of a football player, and it may very well be always a "What-if" situation for us regarding him. I went and looked at the poll from April that started circulating, and while I didn't participate for some reason, I like many, thought CJ was likely the best candidate, I just didn't think we would get him. I'm pretty high on Richardson's potential, and I'm of course concerned about injuries. What team isn't concerned about losing their franchise qb. This one especially is, or should be, considering we ruined the greatest young qb in the history of the game. But AR was Ballard's pick. The Irsay's were patient enough to give him that opportunity, one of which we will never know the true behind the scenes reason it took this long, although I have my beliefs and it's more to do with Irsay/Reich than it ever was Ballard. I can understand the frustration of his record up to this point. I can understand his frustration too. As miserable as it has been for us as fans, can you imagine how he feels?

I "white-knight" for him because I feel that not defending him on things that are logical, like having a qb issue (there's a lot of teams that do and haven't been near as successful, even with multiple tries at top 5 qb picks) is not supporting him. And the fact is, he's our GM. He's going to continue to be, regardless of how big of a fit you people throw on this forum. Or how many articles Greg Doyle writes that no one reads because the Indy Star sold out like every other newspaper. I support him because I like the guy, genuinely like him. And I'm not alone in that. By all accounts, everyone that works with him and that has worked with him do too. Can't say that for our last GM. Total * that ruined a generational qb. All I ever see on here is stanning over his record like he accomplished anything. He accomplished selecting the easiest draft pick in the world in Andrew Luck, and then doing nothing while this franchise rode his back for several years. I didn't blame him for retiring. I would have quit a long time before he did.

I'm an eternal optimist, to a fault. I'm very optimistic about a young, black super-stud athlete at Quarterback for this team, after everything this franchise has been through over the last decade. I think there is some really strong talent across the roster. Are there holes? obviously. Every team has them. The team's that hide them better than we have are the ones that are getting consistent qb play, and it makes all the difference. CJ Stroud is showing it... I'm hopeful Ballard grows as a GM. Just like you would hope your coach learns from mistakes early in his career and doesn't continue making them like Pagano and Reich did. I hope Steichen works wonders.

As long as Chris Ballard's our GM, I am going to support him, and hope for his success. I don't have a timetable for that support. A lot of folks on here lost it a long time ago it seems. And I don't blame anyone, necessarily. It's just not the type of fan I'm going to be.

i have respect for the way you feel but i feel differently about ballard. you said that qb play is what it takes to make the playoffs. i agree with that, i started losing faith in ballard in the 2020 draft when burrow, hurts, herbert, tua, and love were all available. ballard got eason in that draft. i too think ar can be good but we should have had a qb before now.

Strong disagree. You can tell by the poll most of us wanted Stroud.

I’m hoping AR can still be our franchise QB but I wanted Stroud all along. Many of us did. We just never traded up for him.

ballard imo was afraid to trade up, job security to just take what falls to us. in 2020 burrow, hurts, herbert, tua, and love were all in that draft, ballard traded out of the first for buckner, could have still had love but chose eason instead.

It works both ways, do you think Polian was a terrible GM in Buffalo because they never won a SB? Polian is why Norwood was their FG kicker. So, it was Polian's fault that Norwood missed a kick to win a SB. How about the GM of the Dolphins, is it his fault that Dan Marino never won a SB. He took Duper and Clayton and hired Shula. Is it Ballard's fault that Luck retired, and which really screwed things up for a few years in reality?

i cant make excuses for ballards poor record. i want the colts to win our division again not another third place finish helped by an easy schedule. the luck qb excuse is getting old, in 7 years he has not moved up to take a chance on a qb, in 2020 he traded our first round pick for buckner,  qbs in the draft in 2020 were burrow, hurts, herbert, tua, and love, ballard picked eason. ballard had a chance to get the colts a qb he chose instead to go with old declining qbs rather than move up and take a chance.  love he passed by completely . he should have picked a qb in 2020 and should have been fired for not doing that.
