No way I believe that.   Even his teammates will be watching to see if he makes the extra points.

Frank says we have total faith in our kicker AND the locker room is a factor then why did you bring in kickers this week to try out? If a tryout made 100/100 kicks including 10/10 from 60 yards then the locker room and faith in your current kicker no longer matter?

Thats why, IMO, the tryouts were to pacify fans/players and they had no intention of making a change.

I don't think it’s that. I just think it’s the man himself and his legendary status.

Didn’t matter what those guys did.   Adam is Adam and they never intended on moving on from him

    100% agree.

Bring in kickers that you have no intention of signing no matter what so you can say "we had every intention of holding him accountable but nobody was better."

They could have tried out Justin Tucker yesterday and they 100000% wouldn't have signed him and cut Vinny.

Hoyer was signed on September 2. He's not part of any long term plan, he was an emergency signing after Luck retired.

Kelly wasn't on the active roster until JB got hurt. He was signed late in free agency, then didn't get claimed when he was on waivers, then signed back to the practice squad, where he stayed until we needed to promote him (no word on whether anyone tried to grab him). It's not like he's a proven commodity, or even a coveted prospect. How do we know he's better than Hoyer? Especially prior to the Miami game (and no one should have expected him to be special, but he was especially awful against Miami). That's an assumption that I don't understand and don't agree with. We don't know what Kelly is.

Also, are you forgetting that Kelly was suspended the first two weeks? If he was available, maybe they don't sign Hoyer, and Kelly is the backup. That would have been a questionable decision, IMO, based on Kelly's background.

But as it stood, they had to sign someone, and they wanted a veteran who could pick up the playbook quickly, in case he had to step in. Enter Hoyer. The fact that they gave Hoyer a strong contract is kind of an indication that they weren't ready for Kelly to be QB2 anyways; otherwise, maybe they sign a less expensive backup who keeps the seat warm for two weeks.

And Walker? I was always surprised he was even still on the roster. He's not good. He was probably a good teammate and a good scout team guy, but not a good QB. If Walker was JB's backup in the first two weeks, and had to play, it would have been an unmitigated disaster. Hoyer > Walker, and everyone knew that. Kelly > Walker, and they didn't make him QB2. Walker is where he belongs at this point -- out of the NFL.

I just find this to be a weird question. Hoyer was signed because Luck retired, and even if Kelly hadn't been suspended the first two weeks, making him QB2 would have been risky.

All the Colts were trying to do is have a capable backup QB. As it stands, Hoyer has been a mixed bag, but let's acknowledge that he's been thrown in the game with backup receivers, running an offense that's been struggling for a few weeks to find its identity.

If you were asking why the Colts don't give Kelly a shot moving forward, that's a different story, but it seems like there's an assumption that Kelly is necessarily better than Hoyer, and I'm not sure I agree with that assumption. Given the circumstances, it's unknown whether Kelly would have performed any better than Hoyer did last week.

My gosh...I almost always agree with you but this one has me scratching my head. You're arguing against points I'm not making. Did you read my posts or assume Im in the start Kelly camp?

Is Hoyer better than Kelly right now? You dont know that and neither does anyone else but lets say yes. WHY IS KELLY ON THE TEAM THEN? We dont need 3 QBs for 9 weeks (barring last week) when this team is riddled with injuries.

Is Kelly better than Hoyer right now? You dont know that and neither does anyone else but lets say yes. WHY IS HOYER ON THE TEAM THEN? We dont need 3 QBs for 9 weeks (barring last week) when this team is riddled with injuries.

Im of the mind that since nobody here knows the answer to those 2 questions get rid of Hoyer and fill that spot with DT, WR, OL that may contribute in the future. We know what Hoyer is and its not good enough (ask every teams hes played on).

As far as roster building goes, how many teams carry 3 QB's even on the practice squad? Less than half and the bulk of those are, like the Colts, due to injuries. This is a team that doesnt have the luxury of carrying 3 QBs.

    Which is the real question?

Kelly was on the practice squad until Saturday. Anyone projecting him to be anything more than a future backup on this team is shooting too high. He has some talent, but was drafted at the end of the 7th round, he was a free agent until we signed him in May, then he made it through waivers in September. All offseason, he was competing with Phillip Walker for QB3, and we know Walker isn't anything special.

What changed is that Luck retired. Otherwise, we wouldn't have signed Hoyer, Kelly probably would have been stuck on the practice squad just like he was anyway, and we'd be talking about the QB position a lot less this season.

Everyone knows Hoyer isn't a franchise QB. That's why he was available in September. He's a backup. We signed him in case JB got hurt. Maybe if Kelly wasn't suspended for the first two weeks they plug Kelly in at QB2, but I doubt that. As it is, we gave Hoyer a nice backup QB contract and a clipboard, and crossed our fingers that he wouldn't have to take any meaningful snaps. Then JB got hurt last week, and now we know firsthand what kind of QB Brian Hoyer is.

After this season ends, the staff will have serious questions to answer about the QB position. Hoyer and Kelly are like, 4th and 5th on that list, IMO.

If you really want to ask why we didn't start Chad Kelly, you should just ask.

You missed the point, i think, because I wasn't clear.

This has nothing to do with Chad Kelly playing, its about Hoyer and the roster.

If Hoyer is the plan for a long term backup why is Chad Kelly on this team? I understand last week with injuries but why the other 8 weeks? In this scenario Kelly will never play so cut him for another roster spot.

If Hoyer is here for a year (assume Kelly is the backup after) why would you even have Hoyer at all? The Colts would be saying Hoyer will be here 1 year even though we know Kelly is better which is why hes the future backup. In order to say that you'd have to know Kelly is better now. If Kelly is better than why bring in Hoyer?

If this was a stopgap for weeks 1-2 why not keep Walker and then waive him week 3? I cant make sense of what the Colts are trying to do here.

To the portion in bold: I could be wrong, but I read that AV has the worst kicking percentage in the league this year. Again, I could be wrong here. This would tell me that there's plenty of room for improvement.

Vinny has missed 6 PATs. Signing another kicker would immediately improve the Colts in this area. PATs are usually automatic. Misses are extremely rare, yet Vinny has missed 6. He's also missed 5 field goals. Adding another kicker may not result in a better field goal percentage (though, I think it would), but it would solve the PAT issues.

    Agreed 100%

The problem with "nobody's available" is that at least 2 kickers are now on NFL rosters and kicking FG's that weren't 4-5 weeks ago. Of course they're not available now because someone signed them, just like the kickers that will be signed over the next 3-4 weeks wont be available in 5 weeks.

  6. Honest question here. Why is Chad Kelly on the team?

I assumed he was here because he has some sort of future on this team and if that's the case why is Hoyer here? There's enough film on Hoyer to see hes never going to be a franchise QB so he's here to "mentor" JB? Is Hoyer somehow a better influence/teacher than Tom Brady and Luck were for a year or so? And if he is better than does that mean Hoyer is here for the longhaul and not just this year? I think we can all agree thats a terrible idea.

So again, why is Kelly here?

Garbage comments on Brissett.  The man does what we need to win. His TDs to int ratio is excellent.  Colts could have been up huge if not for a 96 yard pick 6. Brissett shakes tackles and is not taking 5 sacks a game.

    Garbage.

    FYI  -

Hoyer was sacked 4 times vs the Steelers.

Brissett was sacked 4 times vs the Broncos and he was sacked 1 time vs the Steelers in 1 quarter.

  8. I'm not here to say CK is the next Kurt Warner or anything but I want to dispel a common talking point...

CK clearly isn't good because nobody claimed him on waivers.

It was a couple weeks into the season. Do you really think any NFL team didn't have a roster prepared with a minimum of 2 QB's? You realistically think there were teams in the league sitting on a 1 QB roster saying; 'Quality QB's get cut all the time in this league, lets just wait for waivers to find our backup and hope nothing happens to the only QB on our roster?"

Well, he won't cost as much if he was to get a new contract. He's up at season's end...right?

That's a great thought. If the season ended today would the Colts resign him if it cost what they're paying him now ($6.5 per year which puts him at #12 for TE salary)?

The goal posts are wider in college as well.    Again,   I'm going with the opinion of a person that has held and kicked in the pros.  You can take some college guys opinion.  That's up to you

You have to had played in the NFL to have a meaningful opinion, got it. Does that logic apply everywhere or just this topic with kicking?

Bill Belicheck has never taken a defensive snap in the NFL so therefore you think his opinion is garbage vs lets say Bjorn Werner? Also tells us that Chris Ballard isnt qualified to make any decision on Vinny because he hasnt kicked balls in the NFL either. Better get Pat in here to run player personnel according to you.

  11. This Hoyer talk is crazy.

Three QBs have thrown for 3 TDs against Pitt this year and one of them did it in 3 quarters. The other 2 are Tom Brady and Russell Wilson. Look at who Pitt has played this year and then come back and tell me Hoyer didn't EXCEL yesterday.

    On the road in Pittsburgh.

    No starting center.

    No TY Hilton.

    No first team practice reps.

15 defenders on defense (counting the refs)

Like him or not Hoyer lit them up yesterday in a far worse situation than any QB has faced vs them this year.

  12. Question for those that say its on everyone and not Vinny's fault we lost...

Did Vinny kick the game winner vs the Broncos at the end of the game?

Nope, he didnt. That kick had nothing to do with sealing the victory. Brissett actually won that game in the 2nd quarter when he scrambled for a 4 yard gain instead of throwing an incomplete pass (this statement sounds ridiculous right?!?)

You cant have it both ways.

If I live to be 100, I’ll never understand the posts that basically say the poster knows better than the GM about what the team should’ve done.

Especially now that we have a GM widely regarded as one of the best in the business.     But the poster knows better.....

    Oh well....

To be fair the Colts and their decisions are not made in a vacuum.

Its hard for any fan to watch teams like the Pats make the exact move they think the Colts should have made. It is sort of disingenuous of anyone to confidently say Ballard should/would never make a move like that when you see the best run organization in sports make that exact move.

    What word?

    Id guess overpay.

The market sets the value regardless if Ballard (or any posters) want to say differently. A relatively productive, past the mid-point of their career WR is worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick (Sanu, Tate, etc.). A young productive WR is worth a lot more (Cooks, Cooper, etc.).

Ballard may not want to pay market value for a player, and thats fine, but that doesnt change the value of the player/position.

    Kneeling does not take courage.

Running between flying pieces of hot lead and copper takes Courage.

Pulling up the flag after the soldier carrying  was dropped and killed on the battlefield of America's freedom at Yorkstown is courage.

Running into a house on fire to save a toddler from a certain death is courage.

Sitting on a seat in a bus full of people who hate you simply because of your skin color knowing you could go to jail is courage.

leading a march of people who were and are still today suffering from racism knowing very well you could be killed or jailed is courage.

Why were those soldiers fighting at Yorktown in the first place? Do you think it had anything to do with one side feeling they were being treated unfairly by the other side and they chose to do something about it?

You also referenced Rosa Parks; are you suggesting she chose the correct venue to demonstrate her outrage over racial injustice? Why? Id love for you to explain how/when/where the appropriate locale is to demonstrate peacefully.

You toss around generalized examples of courage to say what? Unless a person does the examples you listed they're not demonstrating courage. Is that your point? Heres a few you left out:

Standing up against injustice whenever it presents itself regardless of personal impact

Refusing to go along with authority simply because you're told to (See  Yorktown)

Fighting a battle for someone else that doesn't have the ability to fight it themselves

Kneeling during the National Anthem being played, during a game where you are paid millions, is not courage, it's disrespectful and insulting.  I would think differently if he put his money where his mouth is, but he hasn't.  What he was doing was attention seeking. Same thing with Kaepernick, who started his little kneeling crap AFTER he lost his starting spot.  Only 2 weeks after that start did he try to say he was doing it for a social cause.  No, in both cases, it was players attention seeking, not carrying a badge of courage, that led them to kneel.

Waiting 3 years, AFTER all the persons involved are no longer with the Colts, is further proof this is about attention seeking!

How about providing some clarity here.

The bold summary: kneeling is wrong and shouldn't happen.

The underlined summary: kneeling is not wrong if he supported the kneeling financially.

    This is textbook courage.

How many people were on the Colts sidelines - 100?

How many people took a knee - 1?

Just because you dont support his cause doesn't mean it doesn't take courage to do what he did.

Funny how these things go in cycles. Not that long ago, the AFC South was considered trash.

So true. The NFC West is stacked now but 8-9 years ago they were the first division to have a playoff team with a losing record (7-9 Seahawks if memory serves).

Campbell has been MIA.  The injury didn't help, but he's been MIA when healthy.

DK Metcalf (selected Round 2, Pick 32 [after Campbell]):

    402 yards receiving; 23 receptions; 17.5 AVG; 4 TDs

Campbell (selected Round 2, Pick 27 [before Metcalf]):

    62 yards receiving; 10 receptions; 6.2 AVG; 1 TD

So far, Metcalf has turned out to be the more impactful player.

I agree Metcalf has been better but I would add that if Russell Wilson was the Colts QB and Brissett the Seahawks I think those numbers look wildly different for both WRs.

Do the Colts win the game without him?  You seem like you don’t want to answer that because that means giving Adam some credit and not hitting the panic button.

Like I said his extra points are concerning and I think age is catching him but with the game on the line I will still take Adam over most kickers in the league.

Also I didn’t cherry pick.  I acknowledged his extra point struggles and then pointed out since the disaster of the Chargers game Adam has been good on field goals.  He’s had two misses since then both from 45 or longer.  Pardon me for not losing mind over the field goal part of it and thinking maybe the GOAT figured out that part of the problem after a really bad game.

As for the extra points that’s a bigger concern.  I think that has something to do with him short legging it like McAfee pointed out.

You keep falling back on the idea that the Colts dont win without Vinny but Vinny's the reason Vinny had to win the game.

Thats like crediting an arsonist for putting out the fire he started himself. That doesnt make you a hero.

  22. My guess is Jacoby would be #5 in Pro Bowl voting right now.

Brady, Jackson, Mahomes (doesn't matter that hes hurt), Watson, Brissett

I think Josh Allen will beat him out if they keep winning AND they knock the Pats off (almost did the first time).

MVP = 0 chance. Not while Bradys team is undefeated.
