U cannot sign  elite wrs if u have no qbs. What free agent wr was going to  sign with the Colts when the only qb u have is Sam? Ain't going to happen. Plus, I am not a big supporter of signing 1st day wr free agents. It is the most expensive acquisition. If u go back, I would dare u to find one that ended up transforming a team with their play.

This is a flawed argument because talented transformational WR's are so seldom available in FA. You can say the same for free agent QB's and edge rushers. How different is your argument if you say "I dare you to find a WR that switched teams that ended up transforming that team." There are dozens of those but for some reason Ballard isnt allowed to trade for a WR?

It would make sense for Ballard and Mariota to both look at all options available to them.  This is a business with millions of dollars changing hands, not a prom.

That's exactly my point. If Ballard really wants Watson - then go get him. If that's your plan, then do it. If he said we'll give you 15 first round picks, Nelson, Leonard and Buckner then Watson would be a Colt. (I realize thats insane comp but you get the point).

If Mariota is your plan - then go get him. Do it. If you need to pay $2mil more per year than do it.

Having an iron in every fire is not a plan.

It doesn’t tell me that at all.  It’s not really a secret with Rodgers staying in GB and Wilson already being traded that Watson is the best QB available so Ballard could very well be working on someone else but thought I don’t expect the Texans to want to engage in a trade of Watson to Indy but I might as well call and see if I get lucky.  That does two things it takes a chance to see if you can get a better player but it also tells whoever they are working on that they aren’t the only option and is an attempt to create a little leverage for the Colts.

Let's just say Ballards plan is to sign Mariotta and Mariotta's team sees Ballard trying to get Watson. Do you think it'd make sense for Mariotta to start looking elsewhere too or is it only fair for the Colts to have a prom date and still ask others girls if they want to go to prom with them?

Are we seriously using the 9ers as an example after Luck retired???:troll:

The Luck excuse is officially over.

Ballard knows Luck is not part of this team.

He has a top 15 pick.

He has cap space (in part due to Luck leaving).

Relevant to the topic, the 49ers knew they needed a QB so they got one via trade. If Ballard CHOOSES to ignore a QB in the draft, trade and/or free agency the results are on him and have nothing to do with Luck.

There's no way Tom Brady would even take an offer to play QB for the Colts. Especially after deflategate. He's got a personal vendetta against Indianapolis whether he will admit it or not. I think he would do well in Indy but I think he would rather play in New England or retire.

What possible reason would he have to sign with the Colts over the Pats? I love the Colts and hate the Pats but lets be honest-

The Patriots have a better coach, better defense, better offense, they won more games in 2019 and they made the playoffs.

The Colts have a better run game.

Stampede blue is awful! Do not listen to it when operating heavy machinery, you will fall asleep...

Admittedly I know nothing about sound mixing but I get the feeling they dont either. During a two person conversation person 1's volume is at 10 while person 2's volume is at 1. You turn it up to hear person 2 and then have a brain aneurysm when person 1 starts talking again at volume 5,000.

Pretty good content but I had to give it up and switched to the official Colts cast and/or KB.

  7. Tannehills regular season passing yards per game puts him just about the same average as Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson in yards per game (about 250 per game).

Hes also ahead of both in average passing TDs per game (about 2). He threw for 4 less passing TDs on the year but did it in 5 less games.

Give Tannehill his average for the season and he finishes 3rd in passing TDs (32) and around 11th-12th in yards.

They both have made more of impact this year but it's too early to tell.

I remember people bad mouthing Polian when he took a receiver Wayne when Quincy Morgan, Chad Johnson and Chris Chambers were available.  Or for taking Freeney rather than Haynesworth.  In the long run, it was proven that Polian made the correct choice.  We need to wait and see if the same can be said for Ya-Sin.

IMO very few players talent transcends their situation (Julio Jones, Barry Sanders, LT, etc) its the situation that determines the result.

For example, Chris Chambers was, in my opinion, very very good but that's not necessarily reflected anywhere. He had a few great seasons with Gus Ferotte throwing him the ball. What would that look like if he were drafted here with Peyton throwing him the ball for 13 years?

Sure DK looks great - with Wilson throwing him ball.

Sure Mack looks great running the ball - with this O line.

Are those different results with different situations? 100% yes.

You know how much of a fan I was of Campbell, but IMO there is a real chance I got this one wrong. Every single worry about him by smarter than me evaluators turned out correct even when he was healthy. I think I need to change my process of evaluating the WRs and not be so impressed by manufactured production, slot production and gimmicky stunts even if they look very impressive in college settings. When you have close to zero production outside of the slot or gimmick plays, there should be more skepticism about the polish/ability to run routes, get separation, beat press-man, etc. Those are all MUCH MORE important than anything Campbell has ever shown.

I dont follow a ton of college and you clearly know way more about college players than me so these are honest questions...

Didn't Campbell set OSU records in receptions, yards and TD's his final year (I recall that from the broadcast)? The bulk of that production at OSU came from the slot? I thought he would be more of a Julian Edelman type that plays all over, gets involved deep, in the screen game and in the run game.

  10. I must have missed it but where is all the Carr talk coming from? Did Gruden say hes available (wouldn't surprise me with him)?

If were talking about acquiring a QB under contract Id be on the phone with the Lions asking what it would take to get Stafford (assuming hes healthy).

Hes 31 years old (about the same age as Luck) and could play a long time here.

     Hes an elite passer.

We can absorb the cap hit.

The Lions won 3 games this year and may be ready to start over.

I agree. An above average QB with the Titans would have blown out the Patriots last night. Henry had so many yards and carries because they needed to limit Tannehill.

     I think a lot of people didn't watch the game. Look at the first down breakouts and tell me Tannehill didn't have a huge impact;

    1st Downs                            15

    Passing 1st downs              11

    Rushing 1st downs              3

    1st downs from penalties  1

Thanks.  I almost didn't come to this board because I knew there would be a ton of over-reactions.

Funny, AC says he sees two options for this offseason... resign with the Colts or retire and everyone focuses on the retiring, no one focuses on the fact he wants to sign a new contract with the Colts.

Agreed. This seems to me like a comment on HOW GOOD the locker room is. I will play here and nowhere else is a pretty powerful statement on the state of this team/locker room.

I like Mack...but how much do you pay a good RB that doesn't make plays in the passing game?

Agreed. I like Mack too but most of the top 5 guys run the ball well, catch passes and play on 3rd downs. He only does 1 of those. Maybe it's not his fault/decision but hes a 2 down back that doesn't catch passes and that's a rarity among high-end RBs.

Ebron is a good example of what Ballard keeps saying. It’s better to grow your team via the draft and pay your own. Ebron is acting like a FA.

Well to be fair - Houston, Desir, Autry, Sheard and Moore weren't drafted by the Colts and those worked out great. Thats 5 of 11 defensive starters brought in (not drafted) and this is one of the best defenses we've had in 25 years.

You are absolutely correct. I said as much in another thread. I just don't understand, they know what they have in JB. Decent back up / useless started. Try something different even if its not the answer. You got to try because doing the same gets you the same results. If you don't try you will never know.

I dont personally think JB is the answer but once you bench him there's really no coming back. If the Colts bench him for Kelly, JB is basically done in Indy. Not saying thats good or bad but I dont see Ballard/Reich cutting their future options off now when they could essentially do the same thing in training camp next year by saying its an open competition.

I like Ballard...and I think he is a very smart executive and a great ambassador for this team....and I am happy with the direction of this team. So let's just say that first. But I was curious to see what the narrative of this season would be...and this thread is a pretty good indicator of where that's headed. It just seems that Ballard has been put on such a pedestal by this fanbase and there is a bit of a double standard applied to him.

Couldn't agree more. The problem here is when you defend a Grigson decision the replies are Ballard is so much better. When you criticize a Ballard decision the replies are Grigson was so much worse.

For example, everyone destroys Grigson for his O line moves and everyone also likes to give Ballard passes for guys like Fountain/Cain/Funchess/Campbell being hurt like its not his fault. If thats true then lets talk about a few Grigson moves.

Cherilus - very good for a season. Career derailed by injuries.

Thomas - played 2 games. Career derailed by injuries.

Mewhort - played very well for several years. Career derailed by injuries.

Whats the difference? If those 3 move stayed healthy the O line could have been very very good especially with Kelly/Castonzo in there. In my mind, if Grigson sucks and failed to address the O line doesn't Ballard suck for not addressing the WRs? After all the ONLY WR on this team thats done anything is Grigsons.

I'm so tired of the same thing over and over and over

Also, I'll have to look at the snap count, but Hines taking so much of Mack's snaps was ridiculous.

Yup. I keep thinking Mack is a franchise type RB but he certainly isn't used like one.

    He barely plays 3rd downs.

He almost never catches passes (see current NFL RB's all over the league)

Hes not in to close halves or any 2 minute style offense.

Hes never in on the last drives.

Hes essentially used as a 2 down back. Ive seen Hines carry the ball enough to know hes not in the same universe of ability as Mack is. Makes no sense at all.

Smh  tight end is a top position player for the ravens kinda like ty is for us . You cannot win with guys like Rodgers etc . My gosh he is not a quality reciever.  Look at philly same boat

The Texans have lost more than the Colts just this year.

They lost their 1st round pick Howard before the season started.

They lost Lamar Miller before the season.

They lost Fuller for several games this year.

    Clowney is gone.

They lost JJ Watt for the season.

Every one of those players is a starter on the Colts with the exception of possibly Howard and that we cant say for sure. Other than TY and Desir we haven't lost a player that would start for the Texans.

Thank you for researching and posting all of this data. Its very information and honestly fun to read - thank you!

perhaps. But to be fair, the Patriots have been searching for nearly 7 weeks and haven't been able to upgrade either. So perhaps at this point, its ride or die?

Vinny is currently the 38th ranked kicker with a 72% success rate (4% below 37 BTW) among 40 players that have attempted a kick this year.

By simple definition of their being only 32 teams there are literally several kickers available that are having a better statistical year than he is.
