If you’re betting, bet on the chiefs to cover. Derek Carr picked us apart. Mahomes will have himself a day

Carr played mistake free ball, but he only threw for 189 yards & a pair of TDs. While I totally expect Mahomes to go ballistic, Carr's numbers weren't all that great on Sunday.

The biggest knock on Luck was not that he was locking on Hilton, he was making bad receivers look good from the very start and he's been having one of the most expansive receiving trees from the very start(he was throwing a lot to a lot of receivers not to just few he trusted).

The biggest knock on Luck was that he was holding the ball too long. But the reason he was doing it was very different to the reason some other QBs do it(Mariota, Watson, to a lesser extent Brissett etc). Luck was given the responsibility from the very start to do full field progression reads in an Air Coryell system that relied on him to hold the ball and take deep shots. He was holding the ball in order to let all his progressions develop and make throws downfield(and sometimes he indeed pushed his Luck way too much and didn't know when to give up). The Mariotas of the world hold the ball because they have trouble isolating(what's there) and eliminating(what's not there)...

I agree with what you're saying, but every time Luck played a subpar game, I'd come to the forum & see a combination of these critiques:

    A) Hones in on Hilton too much

    B) Gotta get rid of the ball quicker

    C) Needs to identify what the defense is doing presnap, would help with A & B

We can debate whether those were uneducated takes or not, but we'd be getting way off topic considering this thread is about how Jacoby Brissett has faired these 4 weeks into the season.

We can see him locking into his first read while huge TD throws on the other side of the field are available, we can see him missing anticipation throws that he needs to make, etc.

The biggest knocks on Luck for like the 4 first years of his career were his inability to diagnose coverages presnap, locking onto TY Hilton as his initial read, & holding onto the ball too long. I fully expect to see another young QB struggle with the same issues.

My stance on Jacoby is that I don't expect a 2nd year starter to play like a 10 year veteran, but if he's producing at the level that Brissett currently is, while progressing a little each week, I'm going to view that as a positive.

Andy dalton hasn’t been that bad. He has no team around him. A good organization can make or break any QB.

The Bengals would be wise to trade him now. They're either gonna get him injured behind that line, or things will go just bad enough that he won't want to re-sign with them in the offseason.

I hate those simplistics stats over small samples. They miss a ton of context.

There was a reason... or two Luck was dinking and dunking the first 4-5 weeks of the season and those reasons are not available as an excuse to Brissett. Luck was returning from injury and IMO was having trouble with the velocity of his balls in the intermediate to long range until he worked his arm into shape later in the season + Reich was trying to protect him because our OLine at the time was very far from its shape both personnel and strength-wise from what it is supposed to be right now(and by the end of Luck's season last year).

Longer throws are available for Brissett right now, and he has the protection he needs, he just doesn't see or aniticipate a lot of them right now.

Andrew's recovering arm strength is no more of an excuse than Brissett being thrusted into the starting role with Luck's sudden retirement 2 weeks prior to the season. Does that stat line mean that Brissett is a better QB talent than Andrew Luck? Of course not, & I'm not suggesting that he is, but I'm not going to ignore a sample size worth 25% of the season either.

I understand what you're getting at, but that's a lot of ifs that could be said the opposite way also. I'm just not optimistic about this team. It was built around Luck & Jacoby isn't Andrew. It's not his fault, but it is what it is. Frank is doing great with what he has to work with. But at the beginning of the year Frank even stated Jacoby is a Top 20 QB. That's like saying he's equivalent to Andy Dalton. Good grief. But I loved Frank's honesty.

    Andy Dalton?

How did you conclude that we’re “moving on from speed guys”..??

What moves have we made to support that view?

I'm not concluding that, I just feel like ditching Ward for a run stuffer 3T/NT 4 games in seems to at least suggest that they're starting to realize we need more size in the middle.

  8. 11 hours ago, NannyMcafee said:

It would seem we have again put less value on the NT and DT position. Is it just me? The Colts were better against the run (last year), and our LBers were able to get to ball carriers easier because we had decent play from the interior dline. Am I right or am I wrong?

Maybe Ballard is waiting for talent he likes, but at this point in time it is looking like a mistake skipping out on the FA from the Bucs, who's name I cannot recall.... McCoy?

I am questioning his Philosophy on the interior dline. It isn't all about speed.

Signs Hankins, cuts Hankins. Errs towards smaller "speed" guys, now is moving on from speed guys because they're getting bullied. It's hard to pin down his exact philosophy, but it doesn't seem like he's being stubborn about it, & he's at least willing to move on from something that isn't working. That's probably the biggest difference from Polian.

  9. 35 minutes ago, Chloe6124 said:

At least they are trying. Not sure they will find someone to make a difference this late. This has to be addressed in the draft. Ballard just totally ignored it this year.

Sorry Chloe, just noticed that when I merged our 2 threads & kept yours, for some reason it's saying that I'm the creator of this thread now, & it won't allow me to edit the author.

My guess he was released. Not sure we would get anything in a trade. Wonder who takes the roster spot though.

Apparently he's the corresponding release for the Coley signing.

Interesting.  That says they don't feel he is good enough to stay in for the no-huddle.  They would rather have Hines in there.  Clearly limiting his opportunities more than I would have expected.  Just reinforces he's not a real every down RB1.  When he's in we run the ball.  When Hines is in we throw him the ball.  Not too deceptive I would say.

That's a lot to gather from 1 statement.

Hope they ask the tough questions,Such as ebron reduced snaps and Quincy Wilson aka Toast

4 games in, 2-2, tied for division lead, & all after our franchise QB retired 2 weeks prior to the season. I'm for asking "tough" questions, but we're better right now than we were last year at this time, so I don't think it's time for another angry Dan Dakich interview like back in 2017, just my opinion.

Even though he leads all NFL backs and receivers through 4 weeks with 24 first downs.

What more do you want from a running back than to move the chains? He has a league leading 33% rate of 1st downs.

Every third carry is a first down.

    Preach.

  14. The defense is arguably better than it was at this point in the season last year. Through 6 weeks in 2018, they gave up 34 to the Bengals, 37 to the Texans, 38 to the Patriots, & 35 to the Jets. Due to injuries & inexperience, it's been kinda ugly so far this year, but I definitely would expect it to improve over the course of the year.

Yeah, but this isn't Hollywood, & Brissett's not getting benched for Mr. Irrelevant. Sorry.

Posted this in another thread and it's very relevant here.

You want to bench a guy who:

    a) is completing over 70% of his passes

    b) has only 1 INT on the year

    c) has a passer rating of over 110 this season

    d) has 20 starts under his belt

    e) has been the starter since training camp

In favour of a guy who has played in 1 career regular season game?

In a lot of people's minds, simply benching Brissett wouldn't enough, he needs to be replaced by the practice squad QB that all 31 other teams passed on.

I know this has been mentioned before but the colts offense is becoming the like NE.  If a team takes away the run we will beat you with the pass. Take the pass away will beat you with the run. Pick your poison. We aren’t dependent on winning one way. Defense will have to improve to contend  but the offense is becoming very similiar.

Philosophically, sure, I can see it. But the reality is that the Patriots are a well-oiled machine on offense & they make marching down the field look effortless, even against top defenses. As much as I like Frank Reich & the pieces we have in place right now, we're a ways off from being on that level of unstoppable.

Low INT% doesn't necessarily mean much. It could mean both that the QB is really good or that he doesn't take enough chances.

What worries me with Brissett and what has been consistently bad indicator for him is the big time throws % and his TD%.... TD% is a MUCH better indicator for how good the QB is than INT%... Just do the same sort you do for INT% on the link you shared for TD%. Now look at the best QBs and the worst QBs by TD%. There is practically no high end QB in the area Jacoby is scoring so far and there is practically no bad QB at the top of the charts. The best of the best are in the top 10-15... The best QBs out of the 50 or so in the Jacoby's range is who? Joe Flacco maybe? Teddy Bridgewater?

THIS is what should worry us and the low INT% combined with the low TD% and low % of big time throws is an indicator for exactly what I've mentioned several times in other threads - Jacoby is too conservative and either doesn't see a lot of the big throw opportunities or is way too careful to pull the trigger.

He's a 2nd year starter under his 3rd head coach/OC tandem. I'm not concerned 1 bit, actually quite the opposite, I'm encouraged by his play thus far. You can dig into those numbers for analysis, but is the sample size really large enough to actually determine anything?

That is not bad. Look around the nfl. You don’t see very many games where teams shut down another team for 60 minutes. We actually played great defense on 1st and 2nd down. We just need to tighten up third down and long. The idea was to keep them in bounds and keep the clock running. Which we did. They used over nine minutes on one drive.

I realize that, but I think most expectations for this year was a top 10ish D, so I'd like to see that number be at right around 17 for home games. I know the young guys will experience some growing pains, but once they come around, we'll be a VERY hard team to beat at home if we can accomplish that.

Some great stuff here. He says you can’t tell the difference with the colts offense between Luck and JB. I also love what he says about the colts playing rookies in his other tweet.

While I appreciate the sentiment of the 2nd tweet, it's kinda hard for me to get excited about giving up 24 points at home.
