  1. I posed this in another thread but with all the Luck talk I'll post it here too:

I'm just going to post the following stats for comparison:

    through 5 games:

    Andrew Luck: 106/145, 73.1% completion, 14 TD 2 INT

    Alex Smith: 83/126, 65.9% completion, 7 TD 1 INT

Alex Smith is 6th in the league in completion percentage and 3rd in overall QB rating with a QB rating of 104.1. He's also tied at #1 with Aaron Rodgers for best TD/INT ratio. This is all in his first year in Jim Harbaugh's system, the same system that Luck is currently in at Stanford. Prior to this year, Smith's best completion % for a year was 60.5% (in '09 and this was the only year he even topped 60%) and his best QB rating was 82.1. Smith's best TD/INT ratio was last year when the ratio was 1.5/1...a far cry from his current 7/1 ratio.

I don't know if this will help, but this is what I've been trying to understand....is Luck really that good or is he perhaps, even maybe just a little teeny tiny bit, a product of a very QB friendly system. If you don't believe this is at all possible then I ask only one question....what is the explanation for the dramatic increase in production of Alex Smith?

Maybe it just took the guy a while to figure it out? Or maybe he is just hot right now? He has had hot streaks before. If you throw out the stats that Luck has(very, very, impressive super stats, especially that crazy completeing percentage) and just watch the guy play, you can see that he is so far ahead of his current competition that is projects to eventual NFL success IMO.

  2. I am LOLing at all the pass on luck and draft a CB in a defense that CB's play a mop up role in......I mean seriously...its even Polian's Philosophy to take the best player...so if we draft number 1, that pretty much narrows it down.

Frankly, I am getting sick of some of you jumping on everyone who likes the Idea of taking Luck if we can.....its like you have to search for reasons to not do it?

  3. I wonder if anyone still going to say is not Caldwell fault. That stupid :censored: punted the ball & let the Chiefs run the time out! wth!!! Did he not see our Defense couldnt stop Chiefs at all the 2nd half..

This is exactly what I meant when I said he doesnt possess the intestinal fortitude to ever gamble like a gunslinger. He is gutless.

  4. Since the entire division lost Sunday....we're not totally in the toilet... :hide:

We'd have to win our 5 remaining division games...beat Cincinnatti, Carolina and Atlanta and Baltimore

..we could only lose at New Orleans and at New England...

..we would finish 9-7 and win the first tiebreaker..which is Division record..

That's assuming that Tennesse (3-2) and Houston (3-2) finish 9-7...which, after Sunday, is still very possible....

..and that Peyton Manning returns in time for the final month..

Its not much...but that's it......That's our last train..and if we lose next week, that one's out of the station.. :gloomy:

    BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the Enthusiasm but we will NOT win 3 games this year without Peyton, and we would need to trade our defense through a wormhole to Chicago for the 85 bears D.

  5. When Peyton comes back next year, why not start fresh with VETERAN coaches who wont have to learn on the job? Maybe John Gruden can come in and convince Greg Mattison to leave Michigan........its amazing what Mattison has done in Ann arbor in one year.

  6. Yes I did. My first thought was just like you said, and then I tried to be reasonable. I don't think it's anything our coaches don't realize. The issue is personnel as much as scheme. We are so top heavy with salary that we continue to plug in players that are undrafted and aren't very talented. Since they aren't very talented, we have to be conservative in our defensive play calling and "keep everything in front of us". Well clearly, everything was in front of us for the Tampa game. 6 and 7 yards at a time. Puke.

I agree wholeheartedly about the UDFA thing. Gets old.

  7. Really? We are 0-5 because of Caldwell? Explain how having a different coach would have changed the outcome of the last 5 games? Would our defense have stopped the Browns or the Bucs or the Chiefs today had a different head coach been on the sidelines? This teams problems extend far beyond the HC. I have to give Caldwell credit. We have been in every game, albeit the first week, and the team is giving their best effort. If anything is Caldwell's fault and he truly is the one who decides who will start and who won't, then he is to blame for bringing in Collins and not starting Painter in the first week. Beyond that, this team is winless with any other coach.

Did you watch the Bucs game where everyone in the world wanted our coaches to stop running the Tampa 2, but apparently they couldnt figure it out? Someone on this board has been posting statistics of how bad our defense is when we drop deep coverage, but I guess the coaches dont perform such analysis themselves.

  8. Why was the defense tired? Oh yeah, because the offense only managed 2 first downs the entire second half. You still think Manning wouldn't have made a difference? If the offense doesn't go 3 and out consistantly, the defense can rest and all is good. If they don't then you get the results we did today.

Yes. Even the announcers, who usually are boneheads, noted that the lack of offensive movement, and even trying to pass downfield, put the defense on the field wayyyyyy to much.

  9. When it was 3rd and 10, why didn't we call more shorter play and get yardage and put us in a manageable short yardage play? Why? Why? why? Why?

I was thinking that as well, we didnt even try to give ourselves a chance. Probably because Caldwell was going to punt no matter what until the Crowd booed his rear end into changing his mind after the penalty.

  10. Fans need to remember even before caldwell was the coach the defense still was horrible in most cases... this is NOT a coaching problem... its personnel, just imagine how different it would have been if the colts had some QUALITY and i mean quality CB's.. hopefully the way of getting defensive players very late in the draft or picking them up after the draft changes because the colts need help in the secondary... even when jackson and hayden were here this was not happening, this is definitely a personnel problem on the field.

I both agree and disagree, it is personel in part, and Coaching as well.

  11. No matter who was in there, peyton or no peyton he wouldnt be able to cover up what the defense did today... listening to polian right now and he is actually emulating what alot of ppl are saying right now.. the secondary was dispicable and painter in his words "was flawless"... not even peyton could have done anything.

Except not miss the wide open recievers in the second half on key third downs that Painter did. Sure, Curtis played fine, not really his fault, but to say no difference without Manning is just not accurate.

  12. They're not robots! Give him a break. He's one of the best in the league. This thread shows ignorance.

Its not at all ignorant to ask your PRO BOWL TE to step up when his team needs him. But it might be ignorant to make excuses for him when he regresses instead. Not trying to be jerk, I want Dallas to succeed, but your use of the word "ignorance" was grossly out of order here.

  13. I remember in 91 we were so close to beating Miami in the last game that would have made us 2-14.......and I was going to be happy with that as a 14 year old......this franchise has come a long way since those days. Better days to come again, but man, we really need the front office to start addressing the obvious with FA's and draft picks like the rest of the league rather than hoping for UDFA's to come in cheap and hold the cracks like bubble gum.

  14. Second half collapses of that magnitude involve a lot of poor coaching/and not making adjustments. Caldwell is not a very good time manager/technician/adjustment guy. Add to that the fact that he doesnt ever make that gunslinger gamble when his team needs it, and he is nothing more than a good assistant coach.
