  1. I wanna love him; but I'm withholding judgement at this point. Still hard to really assess his first year here. He did a lot of tearing down. I'm still a firm believer in the "you really need to hit on your first round picks" idea. (Look at Polian's early years here, they created the foundation of the team.) Ballard's first pick was Hooker, who had injury problems in school, and then had a season-ending injury. Love his talent, hope he isn't injury prone.

And his draft and free agency were up and down. Liked finding Hairston and Stewart, but with all of our OL concerns, he only drafted one --- Zach Banner in the fourth --- and then he waived him before the season started. One of the free agent moves I just didn't get was signing Schwenke, a decent guard, but then cutting him so he could rejoin the Titans before the season started.

anyway, I'm holding out hope. He sounds good; hoping for excellent results.

I agree about the Giants. They have already said they were rolling with Eli for a couple of years. That is why I think the Giants will be looking at Barkley real close.

I'm not buying that yet. If you plan to draft a QB --- one that you hope will lead your team --- you have typically needed to pick one in the top 5 - 10 picks. Eli himself was a number one overall pick. You never know when you're going to have the chance to pick in the top 2 - 3 slots. I'm still betting they go QB.

  3. Hey man, without making an argument for either Barkley or Chubb, just because you can find a great player in later rounds does NOT mean you don't pick a rose when you find one in the first.

C'MON. that's why they rank these guys, right?

Where did you hear he had second thoughts

there have been unsubstantiated rumors floated by a couple of folks on twitter. most of the people who have been reporting he's coming, including Pelissaro, have questioned that rumor. but it has been suggested that nothing had been firmed up with the colts and mcdaniels may be having second thoughts.

  5. I love these mock drafts. they're all cool. having said that, I think everyone needs to look at what Ballard did last year and realize that there's a really good chance he drafts players that aren't on any lists at this, maybe even guys we've never heard of before.

    last year,

First round. we pick 15 overall and SHOCK --- three really high rated players have slipped. LOTS of us drooled at the idea of picking Ruben Foster OR Jonathon Allen. he picks Malik Hooker over both (this fits his previous team's draft history. KC always seemed to be picking DBs and OL

Second round --- picks a big CB quincy wilson --- highly rated, seems to fit draftnik's slots

Third round --- Basham --- a lot of us love it; a pass rusher --- but not a name on lots of draftnik's lips.

Fourth round --- by trading Ballard ends up with THREE fourths. First, picks Zach Banner, OL, fits a need, notably tho, a T, not a guard, draftniks hate 'em, and eventually, he gets cut before training camp. Next, Marlon Mack, he slots right for draftniks, fills a need. Last, he picks a HUGE DT, that literally NO-ONE has heard of, Grover Stewart, from Albany-freakin-state.

Fifth round --- more trades, ends up with 2 picks. First, another player completely off the radar, and our THIRD DB of the draft, Nate Hairston, a WR who shifted to CB as a senior (one of our best draft picks). Finally, Ballard drafts Anthony Walker, a LB that lots of draftniks thought would have been drafted in the third or fourth round.

So, what to make of this? I predict we end up with more than the 7 picks we have now, but not necessarily because we trade down in the first. I think we draft more OL and more DBs. I think we HAVE to spend a high pick on a pass rusher. But, lastly, doesn't Saquan Barkley feel like a bigger, faster vision of Marlon Mack?

    just sayin

Regarding Jimbo Irsay, people can say what they want to about him regarding being high = pills or booze/ or him not getting around well. Having said that, the old man still has it by hiring Ballard and being an influence getting McDaniels here to Coach us (assuming Josh comes). Keep in mind he had a huge influence on Drafting Peyton and Luck as well which have been 2 huge right decisions. He also hired Bill Polian in 1998 when he became owner. So the next time anyone decides to put our owner down or make fun of him, they should think twice. We have been damn lucky to have him! He hates to lose and loves the team and the fans.

-Since Jim has been our owner, the Colts have a 196-124 Regular Season record from 1998-2017 = 61.3 winning %. The Colts have also been to 4 AFC Title Games in his 20 season tenure as owner, 2 SB's, and have won a SB. By the way he has been our owner for 20 full seasons. Happy 20th Jim!

    damn straight.

  7. I like Chubb a lot. But here's something to think about.

a great DL gets you maybe 1 sack a game (16 in a season, right?)

a great running back can get you at least 1 TD a game. AND he makes the passing game more potent. opens lanes for receivers, creates play action, can catch the ball out of the backfield.

    MORE production

  8. Here's the only thing about all of this that worries me. I've been a fan for 50 years. I REALLY liked what Irsay did in the Manning era. that is, he went out and got one of the best (if not THE best), PROVEN GM in Polian. and when he hired head coaches, he hired PROVEN, experienced HEAD coaches in Mora, then Dungy.

I love the fact that McDaniels has been a head coach and a PROVEN offensive coordinator, and that Vrabel seems to be highly regarded as an up and comer.

i just miss taking the "sure" thing, rather than betting on the come.

i feel like Jim, after Polian, decided he wanted to "find" the next great guy, rather than trust tenured guys. I think being a head coach is really different than being a coordinator.

with all that said, I'm happy that the guys they're looking at are at the top of people's lists.
