Listening to Polian, it seemed like he still prefers to focus premium draft picks on offensive weapons. While not saying the Colts should use the pick to draft Barkley, he did say ...didn't we pick Edgerrin with the 3rd pick (actually it was the 4th) and how did that turn out? He also put a focus on WR by saying TY is the only current receiver who could have made one of his Colts teams.

I'm still believing that option 1 should be trade down to get more valuable picks. Option 2 would be to draft Bradley Chubb. Dynamic edge rushers are so, so hard to come by.

Not sure it's that simple. He drafted defenders in the first and second rounds --- Freeney, Jackson, Morris, Sanders, Hayden, Angerer, etc. --- i just think he realized that with Manning, our offense was always, rightly, going to be our strength. And so, he drafted Edge, Dallas, Reggie, Addai, etc.

we should also recognize that if Luck is healthy, offense should be our strength. that doesn't mean ignore defense, it means project and protect your strength.

I'm not comparing Barkley to Brown in a physical sense, I'm comparing it to history of the team, division in which it plays, etc.  If you look at how some teams have been built, sometimes history repeats itself or is very similar to how they are currently constructed. In Cleveland, riding a horse behind a decent O-line can minimize some QB deficiencies. Ball control can solve lack of point scoring and defensive short comings. iuThat's all I'm saying

Chris Ballard starts off talking about expectations. Said Chuck never lost the locker room. The players never lost focused, and never tanked. They showed up every week. Without a great locker room it is hard to win in this league. We have to have high standards. Our young players grew as the season went along.

A lot of job openings. We will keep everything internal (in house). It will be a wide-open search. We are going to get the right fit for the Indianapolis Colts.

    Now Chris is taking questions.

It is not a requirement for the new coach to have prior NFL head coaching experience. We want a staff full of teachers that can develop players.

Jim was asked what led to making the change of head coach.

It was not any secret that we were evaluating Chuck last year. We wanted to have continuity. In the end it came down to the final day, and making sure we were doing the right thing. The decision was made, and it was tough to let a good man go. We were leaning towards making a change as the season went on. The Jacksonville game was very disappointing. We have to give Chuck a lot of credit. In the end, we felt we needed to make a change so we did.

Chris: We are going to take our time to make sure we have the right fit for this organization. At the end of the day it will be the gut feeling of when it is the right guy. After we spend enough time with the person then we will know. Anytime you are a GM and you don't have a short list of names you better always have a running list of the available coaches.

The new head coach will make the decision to keep the current coaches. He does not need to be offensive or defensive minded. I don't want someone to come here for just Andrew Luck. If a candidate is concerned about Andrew Luck then he is not the right fit.

Jim: Andrew is coming back, and he makes this job that much more enticing. The great fan base we have. The great tradition we have. The incredible stadium we have. 2012 was absolutely incredible. We had an Executive of the Year award. If you come around the horseshoe then you are coming to something special. Jacoby really did some special things. The commitment we have in winning. This is something that should last for decades and decades.

I am thankful, Chris acknowledged to me that he really wanted to come to the Colts. Peopl are going to be excited about coming here and having a chance to get this job. You don't know the fire that is burning in #12's eyes. He ahs a 110 fever. You put him on that field with and Edgerrin James type "BARKLEY! WHOA"... That last part was me. But he said it. LOL

Jim continues... Ideally we would like to have someone we can have success for 10-12 years, but we are not ruling out older coaches who might not plan to coach that long either.

I don't have super powers. I cannot see through concrete walls. I can say that from being around football for half a century, that this thing just took longer than we thought it would. The surgery was a success. When I made the comment about being 3-4 inches between you ears, I was talking about myself. I was injured, and questioned should I train or not train. I am not trying to sell something that I don't believe in. This horseshoe is bigger than us all, and it will prevail without me, Chris or Andrew. I do believe that from talking to the doctors that he can come back. My optimism was absolutely genuine. One of the finest shoulder doctors in the world said the shoulder surgery was outstanding. Each case is different. It just longer for the shoulder to heal.

I am an optimist, but I am also a realist. I am not going to nonsense anyone. I am telling you that I have no doubt in my mind that Andrew is going to come back. That kid is a special kid. He was born to do great things in the NFL and he will do great things in the NFL! That is coming form someone who has been in this game for half a century. And that is coming from someone that was brought into this game by Johnny Unitas, who slapped my butt in the locker room and said get out of the way kid.

    Irsay continues:

Whether we trade the pick or keep the pick, it is a tremendous asset. The type of equity we have with this type of draft pick, plus we were in every game this year. We could have been in the wildcard weekend. That's how close we are.

God rest his soul Ron Meyer, he had a car salesman aspect to him and he was fun. I feel that Andrew is going to be back and he will write his name into the NFL in a very important way. If you told me that he was going to miss the entire year last year then I could not have believed you.

Continue on..... Irsay continues... Time will tell, but I am sincere when I tell you Andrew will be back.

Chris: We will continue to add competition. We will start throwing soon and that will tell us a lot.

    Press Conference over.

Sorry for the typing mistakes. I was doing this on the fly, :D

great synopsis. I think there's a bunch of people who just like to poke fun at Jim. This is what I heard as well. He's obviously in physical pain (that back looks bad), but he's still on top of it. People made a big deal about his enthusiastic response to Doyel. well, think about it, Doyel --- who's a hatchet man and has been for years --- basically accused Irsay of knowing all along that Luck would miss the season and lying to fans to keep them coming to games. Well, this was Irsay's chance to respond to the fans with Doyel sitting there (and not being able to twist a quote). Good for Jim. lastly, i can't blame him for looking at Saquan and seeing a new Edge.

  4. I really like Saquan, but he is NOT Jim Brown. And I LOVE Nelson, but i couldn't take a guard at 3. Even if he were John Hannah reincarnated i couldn't.

someone else made a very cogent point. Guards don't even (generally) block the other team's best defensive player.

I like Barkley; i need to see how fast Chubb runs. I WANT a GREAT player at 3. there may not be one this year. Then I would try to trade down and target one of those OL.

  5. Conor Williams has great talent; i wonder if he can stay healthy.

I still think you win with GREAT players. it would be hard to pass up Saquan, or Chubb (depending on what he runs) at 2 or 3.

I think if we traded down, I'd rather take Quentin Nelson, the guard. I hate taking a guard so high, but from what I've seen, he flat out dominates opponents.

I like the other picks; at least, in the positions!

  6. no.

this is the least excited I've been since the 1980s. Ballard has churned the roster, but outside of maybe our first two draft picks, I don't see any above average NFL players on defense.

Offense? without Luck, no offense. And I think it may be a long time before we see Luck. They're not even letting him see the practice field.

  7. Ranking him 51 is a joke --- like there are 50 other players in the NFL you'd rather have than Luck.

There seems to be sort of an anti-Luck backlash going on in the sports media right now. Stephen A Smith arguing Luck hasn't "lived up to the hype," and other articles suggesting similar things. I actually saw David Carr on the NFL network last night arguing that he would take Jamis Winston over Luck right now --- C'mon! Please!!!

Luck took the Colts to an AFC championship game with not a LOT of talent with him. I think there have been only 8 quarterbacks in the HISTORY of the NFL to throw for 40 or more TDs in a season. Luck is one of them --- and he's only been in the league for 5 years.

If we can just keep him from being Bert Jones II, he'll be one of the best ever.

  8. OK, so I'm an old dude and been a draft junky for waaaaay too long.

i have one prediction --- get ready to be confused by guys drafted. You know when people talk about how they think they lived previous lives ---- and ALL of the people they were in previous lives were famous, or rich, or powerful people we all remember? they're never "Joe, the blacksmith that no one ever heard of?"

well, the draft is kind of like that. We've all memorized the draft lists from the pundits. we know who we want.

But every year, once the first round is over, the picks start looking weird. they have names of guys who we THOUGHT were ranked really low, or lower than that.

    Never fails.

Take Ballard. last year in Kansas City, they're choices were:

    Round 2, Pick 6 (37) (From 49ers) Chris Jones DT 6'6" 310 Mississippi St. 6.2
Pick Analysis: "Keep in mind, Dontari Poe is in the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. They just re-signed Jay Howard. Smith has a lot of upside and potential, but is inconsistent, both with technique and motor. Coach Andy Reid is going to have to get it out of him." -- Mike Mayock
Round 3, Pick 11 (74) (From Buccaneers) KeiVarae Russell CB 5'11" 192 Notre Dame 5.5
Pick Analysis: "He was a corner at Notre Dame, but a lot of teams have evaluated him as a safety. He played the entire 2015 season with a fracture, and missed the entire 2014 season with an academic issue that would have been a one-game suspension at most other schools." -- Mike Mayock
      Round 4, Pick 7 (105) (From 49ers) Parker Ehinger OG 6'6" 310 Cincinnati 5.1
Pick Analysis: The Chiefs could use some competition in their interior. Ehinger was a 3-year starter at tackle but he likely gets moved inside at this level. He'll add some versatility to a unit that has allowed the 5th most sacks since 2014. -Mark Dulgerian
Round 4, Pick 8 (106) (From Buccaneers through Bears) Eric Murray CB 5'11" 199 Minnesota 5.4
Pick Analysis: Kansas City lost some key players in their secondary so going CB right after addressing their offense makes sense. DC Bob Sutton will value his aggressiveness in his press-man scheme but Murray likely earns a role as a subpackage corner early on. -Mark Dulgerian
      Round 4, Pick 28 (126) Demarcus Robinson WR 6'1" 203 Florida 5.4
Pick Analysis: If the offseason is any indication, the Chiefs are looking to graduate from their dink-and-dunk offense they sported last year. Robinson is the latest indicator, as he provides Alex Smith with a speedy field-stretcher. There's plenty of untapped potential here. --Mark Dulgerian
      Round 5, Pick 25 (162) (From Seahawks) Kevin Hogan QB 6'3" 218 Stanford 5.1
Pick Analysis: The Chiefs lost one of the best back up QBs in the NFL to free agency, so that spot is open for business. Similar to Chase Daniel coming out, Hogan led a big program to a ton of wins and he can lead a locker room from day 1. Hogan is limited as a passer, but he's comfortable managing and making plays in a pro style system. --Mark Dulgerian
      Round 5, Pick 28 (165) Tyreek Hill WR 5'10" 185 West Alabama 4.8
Pick Analysis: The former Oklahoma State Cowboy is a track star with big time explosiveness but only average football instincts. He can be an instant surge for their return game but has a ways to go as an NFL receiver. --Mark Dulgerian
      Round 6, Pick 3 (178) (From 49ers through Cowboys) D.J. White CB 5'11" 193 Georgia Tech 5.5
Pick Analysis: White lacks some baseline traits to ever compete for significant play time but he's a smart player who needs to earn his keep on special teams. --Mark Dulgerian
      Round 6, Pick 28 (203) Dadi Nicolas DE 6'3" 235 Virginia Tech 5.2

We all knew Jones, Russell (Who they ended up waiving) and Nicolas. We all know Hill now because he had a great year; but he wasn't even on a lot of draft boards ...

    the others? all MEH picks.

just sayin, be prepared at the end of the day Saturday to be miffed, bewildered and surprised!

all we can hope for is to hit in the first round ---- Polian was great at this ---- and hope to find nuggets like Hill in the bewilderment!

    DRAAAAAAFFFFFTTTTT!!!!!!! :)

  9. I'm not crazy about giving up draft choices.

BUT, I think people are getting a little defense-miopic here. Yes, our defense has been bad. Yes, we'd love to have it be better.

But let's think about impact. If the defensive player you're looking at IS NOT a double-digit NFL sacker; if the corner or safety you're looking at doesn't increase turnovers, they're not going to have the same impact as a dude who scores more touchdowns and creates mismatches the offense can exploit.

What's that old saying? "The best defense is a good offense."

AND, there will be players to pick in the third and fourth rounds that could be just as good at sacking QBs ---- Bowswer, Hendrickson, Basham, Rivers, etc.

Mccaffrey could be a chess piece. Mate

I love NaPolian but I gotta disagree with him on this one.  Either you can get to the QB or you can't.  Reggie White wasn't the fastest guy on the planet but he could still get sacks.  I'd go more off production and game tape.  The measurables should just be a tie-breaker IMHO.  I would absolutely take either Barnett or Harris, with Barnett being my first choice of the two.

Believe it or not, Reggie ran just under 4.6 when he came into the league. He could truck.

Agreed. But Kelly is going to be a star center. Geathers CAN be that star safety. Why sign Aiken if we want to draft a wideout in the 1st? We would have to trade one of or wideouts. And no receiver to me in this draft is that appealing. All of the top 3 receivers in this draft are currently injured and Williams had a bad neck injury in 2015. I think we need a star RB. But Foreman can be that guy in the 2nd if we go that route.

I think Aiken signed a short-term contract and Moncreif is in the last year of his rookie deal, which means he could be let go if he doesn't rebound this year. (i like Moncrief)

Add into that we were in play for Alshon Jeffrey --- who, by the way is a LOT like Mike Williams --- and a WR is a possible pick. just sayin

  12. I have been liking the predictions of Harris to the Colts, but I'm changing my mind after listening to Polian talk about his 40 time benchmarks.

Say what you want about Uncle Bill, but he had a pretty good record of finding pass rushers. He says 4.8 is too slow. that would take out both Harris and Bennett.

i know there are exceptions, but ...

Id be fine with the pick if it was a defensive pick or solidifying our o-line aside from that no.

I'd be happy with that also. quite frankly, I like Williams as well. The guy is right. TY is the only reliable WR on the team at this point. We have a thoroughbred quarterback; you have to give him the weapons to make us winners.

There are other rounds to pick up defensive players.
