    One step at a time.

Ballard said till the core group of players are in place he will continue to concentrate on that.

We may not be as thin at the TE position as you might think.

Ebron, Doyle and Allie-cox are the ones who gets the attention but we also have Brown, Holmes and Travis on the roster. I am not sure if we brought in a TE after the draft but I think we did.

All of them were signed for a reason so now we wait and see.

It really hampered our strategy last year not having good enough depth a TE.  Sure, they switched as best they could, to other strategies, but after being promised a similar TE usage in the Grigson years and now carrying over that same idea of TE's on crossing routes and mismatches all over the field, and adding Funchess who isn't much different than a pass catching TE (except he drops it too much) I am hoping they actually can follow through on this strategy as I think it is devastating and adding Parris/Hilton (can't get enough of that ironic name combination) speed as yet another twist to TE dominant playcalling, we can finally realize that strategy in full.   Luck's vision of the field and these mismatches crisscrossing mid range and deep can be a new "greatest show on turf" and that is why I would love to see 4 high quality options at TE.  Sure, that might be asking a lot, but Doyle is not reliable health wise anymore, and Ebron might prove to be a one year wonder once Funchess and Doyle dig into his catches/TDs.  Last year Ebron and Hilton were really Lucks only two viable options much of the time.  Inman helped late, but Ebron may come crashing down to earth with serious pass catchers all over the field.  I'd love to see a WR corp where there was no room for the likes of Rogers because he's just not good enough.  The end of the "lesser of evils" options Luck had last year running routes.  Sadly we could find ourselves a Doyle injury away from having to count on bad hands Funchess and Ebron in clutch time catching situations.  I'd rather have them as luxuries, not necessities.

I didn't misquote you at all. Between this thread and another you advocated signing Suh.

If that is your opinion you are certainly entitled to that opinion.

I just don't happen to agree.

Evidently Ballard don't agree either. As heavy this draft was with defense he didn't take that "monster" you are referring to.

I am sure if Eberflus wanted that "monster" Ballard would have accommodated him.

If there is one thing I have learned is Ballard is not signing any high dollar free agents. You should know this too so I was surprised when you advocated for that to happen.

I have pretty much backed you up in all of your comments except for this one so your comment about me making misleading comments are unwarranted.

I have gotten past our past issues so I had hoped you had too.

Read the first post I made at the top of the thread. I ACTUALLY say that I couldn't imagine signing a guy like Suh, but maybe all these high quality guys leave room for someone like him.  How does that equate to endorsing Suh? It doesn't.  It was a question which opened the discussion.  As people responded, they kept bringing up Suh, so I responded to those direct responses.  Suh would not be the worst DT on our roster.  He would likely start.  He'd certainly significantly increase competition which is what they say they want in all position groups.  Right now we have no real competition on the roster that leaves that position group improved over last year.   As it stands, it is weaker.  They need to bring someone in.  I don't care (as I said many times) WHO that person is, I simply listed the top 2 FA DT's to start the discussion.  If I am advocating Suh specifically, why would I start the entire discussion off saying I couldn't imagine signing someone like him? There's nothing to get "past" for me.  I go from discussion to discussion and agree or disagree.  But I don't like being misquoted when I was plainly clear at the start of the post.

JPFolks, I don't know if you directed that question at me specifically or everyone in general, but I like Ebron, Doyle, Allie-Cox, Travis is coming back, and I think Swope is still in the mix. That is a solid group in my opinion, it would be nice to have one guy who would be faster. I thought Allie-Cox really improved his blocking as the season went on.

My concerns is there were times during the season where our depth was basically Ebron in terms of pass catching TE's because of injuries.  I think we might have been down to only 2 total at one point.  Our offense will be unstoppable with our top tier TEs on the field at the same time.  We need a third legit receiving/blocking TE to make it work all day and to  cover if injuries pop up.  Plus the time is now to develop a legit young TE with all around talent like Doyle while we have the top two guys there to lead the way.  I am done with the Swope experiment, I really don't understand all the effort put into this guy over just getting a guy who knows the game, and has demonstrated/developed his skills against top defensive talent in college.  Converted basketball players is almost a cliche and I wonder how good a legit all around TE to start with would have been with the same development effort put into him.  Obviously Hockensen and Fant were gone before we could have gotten them, but someone closer to their talent level day one is who I was hoping we could develop into a monster going forward.  Thanks for the response.

Kiper gives thoughtful, rational explainations for his analysis and you guys still bash him? The negativity on this forum is mind numbing. I think we had a great draft, not because Kiper or anyone else on tv said so, it is my opinion. Rock and Okereke are probably going to start. Campbell will be on the field a lot at wr along with Hilton, Funchess, Rogers, and Cain. That is a mix of 5 recievers that will be tough to defend all over the field, and we may even bring Iman back yet.  Depth, depth, depth, competition, competition, competition, what is not to like about it?

I'd be all for bringing in SUPER reliable Inman to compete with Rogers and Cain.  Let's make the final WR cut BRUTAL! I hope we're okay at TE, injury was a major factor last year which many people seem to forget.  I hope they get some good UDFAs and perhaps some Vetern FA's into camp to compete.   I'd like us to keep 4 TE's close at hand.  What are your thoughts on the TEs as they stand?

No doubt, a lot of people are wondering on here why certain guys weren't selected when they were "obvious choices" at the time, and I think character and fit were the reasons. It takes a great GM to find not only great athletes, that fit your scheme, but great locker room guys. Ballard may be the best, tho it's still early. They have a very particular guy they're looking for, both from a schematic perspective and a personality perspective.

I think that is sometimes true.  I also think that we, as fans, look at talent on a global NFL level, like in general terms.  Teams have a scheme specific view, perhaps that we don't even know about yet, that they are building quietly to address more than the best talent on the field, but rather the talent that can win our division first, and then enough games to get a BYE and finally to win the Super Bowl.  We have so many unique teams to beat this year that they already know the skill sets and usage abilities to achieve their vision.  It may be the vision we all think we know, based on last year etc. But it could also be new based on added abilities we didn't have.  Someone else (not me) address the blazing speed we have amassed in the WR corps (though I am unsure about Fountain making the team but who knows this early).  If he does, then we have perhaps the fast 4 receivers on any one team in the league.  We ALSO have unmatched size between our two TE's (if healthy) and Funchess to throw at teams and an RB with elite speed and receiving skills that might make him our surprise break out star this year when people least expect it.   I would HATE to have to defend against the pass while ALSO trying to defeat our elite pass protection against one of the top QBs in the league.  As long as we got enough hits versus misses on Defense, we should be a nightmare, health willing.

I really think we're going to take a Patriots like strategy against the widely diverse teams we have to play from power run dominant teams to finesse passing teams to perhaps the toughest most balanced opening day opponent of the season (and I don't think San Diego is overly thrilled having to play us either).  There are guys who seem flawed, but what experts miss is what I have been talking about for a while here.  We have guys that have SOMETHING elite in their skillset across the draft picks.  Like the Patriots, if we use those sometimes singular advantages in each guys game, the weaknesses they have mean nothing.  That is what I am seeing in some of these guys.  I think leadership and intelligence is apparent across most of our picks.  I am sure all will be good teammates.  Sometimes the smartest guys get WAY more out of their talent than an Adonis with all the physical gifts who has gotten by with those without really getting the most of those gifts.

I am still learning about these guys.  I look forward to reading everyone's notes on what they have learned as well.

Ok I get what you are saying.  But I believe the UT position is set far as completion. AND talent   Have said that for weeks.   It is the NT position that needs the completion.  Suh could definitely fill that need.   But I'm 97.3 % sure it wont happen

Yes, that is why I asked the question.  I am just laughing at all the triggered people because I asked a question that included the top 2 DT's on the market currently and Suh seems to have them skittering around like bugs in a panic just for asking.  It's funny at first, but has crossed into a mania like desperate need to virtue signal that Suh is so evil he'd destroy our team if we picked him up on a team friendly one year deal.  No one has (that I have seen anyway) even commented about Liuget.  Someone did say Gerald McCoy might be available, that might be another interesting name to mull over.  I don't really care WHO as long as it is an upgrade over our weakest link.  You know.. COMPETITION?  Thanks at least for the reasonable response.

I think there is near zero chance that Ballard brings in Suh. I don’t think Ballard believes our locker room is ready for a player like Suh. I think down the road he might take a chance on a player with some character concerns, but I don’t believe we are there yet.

As far as bringing in someone else (without any character concerns) then I think there is a possibility. That said, Ballard said himself that he is happy with the competition we have across the defensive line. So much that he traded away Ridgeway to get more interior offensive line competition.

I think we will add to the offensive and defensive line in just about every draft.

We are not far from being one of the best teams in the NFL. I don’t think Ballard looks at the short term. He is playing the long game, because he wants the Colts window to be open for a long time.

Who do we line up in a long game against power backs and average to better than average O-Lines all game?  Who do we put up late in the game 4th and goal from the 1 with 3 TE's a full back and power back and running QB trying to win late? Do we even have enough quality big bodies to line up?

Not everyone is on the Suh wagon as you seem to be.

As usual you misquote me.  But that is your thing... misleading comments.  I am not advocating FOR Suh, I asked a QUESTION about whether the draft leaves room/need for someone like Suh or Liuget.  Big difference.  I am for any DT better than what we have.  Pick whoever.  If they find a UDFA that is at least better than what we have at the bottom (they better since they traded Ridgeway, we have no depth at this point).  I called it BEFORE they traded Ridgeway when "some" people were saying we were all set, no need to do anything.  I knew they couldn't be happy with the status quo and of course their desire for "competition" which would mean signing people at least better than the weakest guy on the team, otherwise there would be no competition.  So, minus Ridgeway, they better sign someone good or the interior DL will have taken a step backward in  year where so many great young DT's were added to teams.  Speed is great until you're in short yardage at key moments against teams with power backs.

So even with Ridgeway gone, we just let it stand, and don't consider bring one of the monsters in? So on 4th and goal when they line up 3 TE's, 5OLs and a full back in front of the TN and Jax RBs, we stand ready with what we have to defend the goal? Do we bring in Funchess and Ebron on D for some size? (yes, that's sarcasm for those who don't get it, we have a few).

@JPFolks  Well, Ridgeway just got traded to the Eagles, so you might be on to something.

Yeah, but my idea is CRAZY... and some people (not to be named because it might trigger them) just can't handle the truth.  I feel quite confident that something wicked this way comes.  I just hope it's one that is better than our current worst DT.  It's quite clear they are looking for speed, but we've got some big backs coming at us at some point you have to stop someone on the goal line or 4th and short.  Speed won't do that.

I guess it’s a slight possibility, but I think Ballard is more than happy with our current defensive line.

Certainly if the draft is any indication.  But not sure where the "competition" is if we don't sign anyone BETTER than the worst guy currently on the lineup.  He says he's ALWAYS wanting competition.  Bring in Suh and I don't think he loses to the others.  Just sayin'

@JPFolks  I'm just spit-balling here, but maybe Ballard thinks our opponents are going to be playing from behind so much that most of the time our traditional DTs won't even be on the field.

Maybe we're going to see a lot more nickel sets where guys like Houston, Sheard, and Lewis kick inside and guys like Turay, Banogu, Green, etc. rush from the edge.

We still have to face power backs from Jacksonville and Tennessee up the middle all day and all night if they are healthy not even considering the rest of our schedule.  That's 4 critical games where DT's and Run stuffing DE's are a must and in general you always need guys to keep the C/G's off our linebackers.

    Look Zero,

Exactly why I stopped getting on the forum.  You put out a question that I assume you wanted feedback on and then criticize, not intelligently, but criticize responses.  Find something else to do.

    Done with you

    Then why keep responding?

Look, you made a response full of contradictions and you weren't offering opinions, but rather disagreements combined with contradictions.  It's a message board.  You were never forced to be here, nor were you forced to post, nor were you forced to keep quoting me and responding.  I am happy to be here, so why find something else to do? Sounds like you need to find something else, or at least learn self control when hitting the "quote" button and then typing away.

    Have a nice day!

The cloak-and-dagger stuff this time of year is so crazy.  I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out teams employ former CIA agents to help out.  Or the CIA utilizes NFL lifers as "consultants"...:funny:

I've heard about some actual cloak and dagger stuff that I can't share on a site like this.  It is anything but funny.  More bummer than anything.

His intent IS to build a solid lock room that could tolerate certain levels/types of players.
Any? Haha! Why grossly overstate his logic?
They would not make us Nasty. Suh is still solid if he wants.
We will see if CB was honest when he said he likes our guys.
I do expect him to add a solid person before training camp in case of injury. Fortunately he has some time/camps to look at the players he does have. Grover and Jihad Ward will be given a shot IMO, Ridgeway better make a real jump to make the team.

Honest? Seriously? How would he be "dis-honest" if he added another DT? It wouldn't mean he was unhappy with the players he had now.. I think we still need to add another TO the list of who we have now.  Not just replacing one.  Perhaps we do nothing.  The coaching staff has talked about having plenty of depths on O-Line and D-Line so it seems like there is room for another DT.  Maybe not.  We'll see.  But if he adds one, it doesn't make him dishonest.  Plus, he said he ALWAYS wants competition, so logically he wouldn't stand pat on OL/DL position groups.  That would be the opposite of competition.  More folks will be coming to compete.  The question I asked was who might they consider and from where?
