Mack is much more of an elusive runner than a speed guy

Some of those runs his rookie year and certainly in college (if you haven't seen his college highlight reel, check it out) he was all speed.  One cut and then gone.

I agree, Luck will be fine. It's just frustrating and means OTA's are somewhat of a waste of time for the starting WR's, TE's, and secondary to a degree. Playing with Brissett does not offer the same benefits as playing with Luck, and the offense will have to do the same thing with Luck all over again later. I can't get into this, I'll just leave. Enjoy OTA's everyone.

It also may prove that Brissett is a back-up quality QB and nothing more.  I thought (when I put on my conspiracy hat for fun) that maybe they held Luck out so they could feature Brissett in hopes of getting trade value, but if anything, this might mean we resign him as backup unless Kelly kicks butt.

So Mack is the speed runner and Hines is the speed catcher and Wilkins is the power back but (and this won't be popular) I think Ware may be the best mix of all those things of all the backs.

The Bills, Jets and Dolphins over the past 15 years makes the Titans, Jags and Texans look like power houses.

Yeah, that's an understatement.  That may be the historically worst year for a division coming up.  I can't see Brady losing to any of them unless it is a team wide brain fart.  They have a couple tough games against the NFC East, but I think the AFC North will be a cakewalk for them since they open at home against Pittsburgh and they are laughably better than the other 3.  Baltimore is ridiculously overrated this year.  Cincy is no problem and Cleveland will underwhelm in my opinion.  I see only 2 tough games all season for them, Philly and Dallas.  Even if they lost both, they are looking at a big yawn to go 13-3 or better and getting the #1 seed for the zillionth time.  Then they'll have to play either 2 of these teams: KC, Indy, San Diego or Pittsburgh.   I think we may be the toughest of those, so we'll likely get our chance to finally get past them in the Luck era before Tom retires, which I think he will do if they win it all again.

In theory, Houston should have a tougher schedule than us.  In my mind, it's about equal.  They get NE and Baltimore while we have Miami and Pittsburgh.  I think the Steelers are potentially better than the Ravens.  But NE is going to be a lot better than the Dolphins.

What really stinks is that the Jags have the easiest schedule and maybe a better team than Houston.

I agree, the SD game is kind of key.  Even if we win the division, that game could decide on HFA in the playoffs.

New England has the easiest schedule in the league.  They could push for an undefeated season if they get past Philly and Dallas which are the only two tough games they have.  They almost always lose a stupid game against inferior talent each season before they rev the engines but should they desire it and Brady is still playing well, he could go out undefeated to cap off his all time career.  Their schedule is that easy.  I don't think Baltimore will win their division, I expect them all to do well against the AFC East going 3-1 as the other 3 teams in that division are garbage.  Worst division and easiest schedule, the Patriots will yawn their way to the first round bye again.  14-2 or 13-3 is the very worst I can see them going unless Brady falls off a cliff.  If he does they will still easily win their division.

That is a very tough opener. If we do win that, that will show me a lot and be a huge win obviously.

The only way we are winning more than 11 games is to start with a win in San Diego.  I don't expect the division winner will have more than 11 wins, 10 seems likely.  Unfortunately, that will also likely put us in the 3rd or worse spot if we do win the division and only get 10 or 11 wins.  The San Diego game is brutal in that it is actually a "must win" to have any shot at a first round Bye.  It is too bad we have so many of our toughest games on the road.  I think we might have the toughest road schedule in the NFL.

    I mean outside of 19-0 or 0-16.

I can see this team continuing to improve and take the next step.  The Colts could be in the AFCCG or even the SB this year.  It's not unreasonable to think the Colts could hoist the Lombardi this year if everything goes right.

I can also see this team regress from last year.  Remember that last year was the first year in new systems on both offense and defense.  Opponents might be better prepared for the Colts this year since they have a years worth of film to study from last year.  This is a very young team, and a few significant injuries could really sink the ship like 2011 and 2017.

This season could go either way, and I don't think I'd be surprised at anything from the worst record in the NFL to being SB champs.

I'll be very surprised if the winner (us or anyone else) of our division has more than 12 wins.  I will be slightly surprised if we have more than 11 wins.  I will be slightly surprise if we have less than 9 wins.  I would be shocked, short of an injury to Luck, if we have a losing record.

I don't expect any rookie on the team not names Campbell even making the Pro Bowl so I'd be shocked if one of them did and surprised if Campbell did.  I'll be surprised if more than 2 rookies start the entire season.  I would be surprised if none of them did.

I would be surprised if The Maniac makes All Pro again this year.  I will be surprised if Nelson does not make All Pro.   (I think with all the new depth on Defense, his stats will go down by default.  Others will make the tackle before he gets there etc.).  I'll also be surprised if he leads the league in tackles again this year.  I think in the case of Nelson, he plays one of the most invisible positions to fans and the media (outside of Indy) so his name, due to his fame and building legend, will draw far more votes than any other guard among all people including players and media.  So he will get disproportionate coverage at his position than others.  It may well be deserved, so I am not suggesting otherwise, but his pathway to notoriety is far more apparent than any other Guard in the league.

I'd be surprised if Ebron was able to match his stats from last year and I would be surprised if Hilton doesn't have one of his top 3 seasons, even with all the extra talent on the field (if he is injury free of course).   I would be surprised if we don't have a top 3 rushing attack.  There won't be many times the Colts will have 8 men in the box against the running game and if they DO, they'll just pass.  I'll be surprised if all the backs remain healthy and any of them make the Pro Bowl or finish Top 5 in any major stat line.  I think it will be a brigade approach if they stay healthy.  If Ware gets hurt, however, I think would be surprised if Mack has less than 1200 yards.  Ware is just too tempting for him not to get significant carries to cut into Mack's production.

  8. I think much of the O stats will be dependent on the Defense.  If the D plays well, our O stats will suffer in a good way.   Less passing, less rushing, less everything needed.  Less risk taking needed and not as many heroic massive 4th quarter comebacks.  If the D suffers, as it could, by being too small in the front 7 and our corner play doesn't go as we hoped, then likely we'll have the fire power to outscore most teams as needed.  So having huge O stats isn't always conducive to winning.   That is why Brady's numbers have been less impressive and why the Jacksonville QB fooled people as much as he did playing garbage time.

  9. I wonder which account is Kevin Bowen on here? He seems often to quote stuff I read here first.  Anyone else notice that? I wouldn't be surprised if he's either lurking or he's one of the regulars here.

Can't put Mahomes on that list with one good year.....and fixing to lose his two best playmakers.

Yeah, if you ALSO take away his 3 best linemen you might approximate what Luck was dealing with his first 3 years.  Then we'd see an apples to apples type comparison to Luck's early years and his.  I think Mahomes deserves attention, but he had a stacked deck on Offense.  He also has the best TE in the league.  So arguably his top 3 weapons were in the top 5 in their positions, and Luck hasn't had any of that EVER, not even last year.  Sure, Luck finally had a line, but TY is on nobodies Top 5 list outside of this message board, and Ebron isn't deserving of a Top 5 listing wiht a blip on his resume.  Mack is a nice RB but far from Top 5 at this point.  Even though Luck STILL won't have 3 Top 5's this year, I think the scales are a bit more balanced this time around so I look forward to seeing which one excels.  If Mahomes puts up similar numbers without Hunt or Hill, (even though Kelce and their replacement back are still as good or better as our guys) then he'll unquestionably be the top QB in the league, in my view, over everyone on the list in pure talent/ability.   Rogers may have BEEN the most talented ever, but he's had some terrible seasons of late.  He'll be re-establishing his greatness as well and he has some new weapons this year to help him do that.  Same with Brady.   We'll also get a good look at Ben R. without Brown to see if he keeps up his performance.  We're lucky that Luck will get to prove it against many of those rated higher than him.  And likely, should we play well in the Playoffs, he'll have to prove it against Brady.  I would love to see Luck win against Brady in their only playoff meeting likely remaining should it happen.

  11. Okay, so thanks to all who responded, but what offset language is really at issue? Is it the same thing the Chargers DE held out for, or is it a variety of things? It seems like a high 1st rounder has power to hold out over "offset" language, but do these guys have any real power? If not, what is the deal? If they DO have power, would the Colts simply say no and the guy sits out over it? Does anyone actually KNOW the reason?  When Bosa held out, they announced the details of why, has anyone heard any point of contention with either of these guys? Or is it just a "guess" that it is "offset language?"

I get so tired of qb rankings.  Why is it that in a sport that is team oriented, we always have to have a who is the best qb discussion?????!?!

Then why add to it? Why even click on it to start with? It was clearly marked exactly what it was.  I am just curious why someone against something engages in helping to create more of it and enhance the very thing he is against? Not agreement or disagreement, but the discussion itself.

  13. I recall Ballard saying on 1070 that our team (paraphrasing) could not yet tolerate a player with baggage on the team via free agency.  Wouldn't this be considered a lot of baggage? I mean comparing him to the former Pitt guys, they seem like angels.  I'd think assault and breaking/entering etc. would count more than their "infractions" in the media or refusing to play under a franchise tag because they were running him into the ground, lessening his likely future without paying him for his production.  I am not disagreeing with Ballard's original assessment, but confused about the lack of consistency in belief?  If a proven highly productive player who mouths off to the press would be too much for a locker room, why wouldn't an unproven talent with violence and drug use in his background be as well?

He is excellent. Plays like Baker Mayfield. His problems, as significant as they have been, are totally off the field.

I'm, guessing he'll spend the year as the 3rd QB to prove he can handle life in the NFL.

That was the plan in Denver.

Is he still eligible for the practice squad? I thought there were limits, or is it just # of years on an active or practice roster or what exactly?

I'm torn a bit on this signing.   Certainly goes against the "good character guys" thought.  My guess is that this is partially due to Jim Kelly and Frank being friends.   Maybe not the major factor, but I'm sure it is part of it.

I'm all for sencond chances, but this guy has a specific pattern going on.   Hopefully he grows up with Reichs help.

He was released by the Denver Broncos the day after he was arrested for criminal trespassing for entering a couple's home in October 2018. Kelly, a seventh-round pick by the Broncos in 2017, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor second-degree criminal trespassing in March. He was sentenced to one year of supervised probation and 50 hours of community service.

Kelly was kicked off Clemson's football team for arguing with coaches during the spring game in 2014. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct after he was arrested for a bar fight in 2014. Kelly was in another fight at his brother's high school football game in New York in October 2016. Videos showed Kelly being held back by the coaches.

I couldn't agree more.  I have less problem with giving him a 4th? chance, but for me the worst part is forgoing the "Colts Culture" to sign a guy at least in part for figurative "nepotism."  THAT is really, really bad.  Sure, we have standards we tout over and over to everyone, but if you have an inside connection we'll toss that out and sign you no matter what you've done.

I love our team, I really like and respect Ballard and Reich.  This turns my stomach.  This for me is a huge red flag.  This sets a precedence that character doesn't matter if you have connections.  Sure, that is how the world works, but the Colts have attempted to put themselves above all that rhetorically.  I think most of us really respect that and love that entire philosophy.  Why show it to be so hypocritical in the end for this guy?  It's not a second or third chance... at this point it's hard to add them all up.  So why would we ever turn down anyone with multiple infractions including violence?

I am sure many if not most are just fine with this.  It sure is, at the least, very disappointing.

I'm not really digging all the attention the team has been getting. I want to lay low

You know you may be right.  Imagine how unglued and ferocious the attacks on Cleveland will be next year when they open 2-4.  Then the stress will mount up a great deal when it really shouldn't.  Reasonable expectations are when the fan faithful (like this message board) and local media are hyped, but the mainstream is busy preening over every action the mega-market teams make.  (examples: The endless LA Lakers stories for the team with the worst record in the NBA over the past half dozen years give or take is an example or the frenzy over Dallas for every sneeze or hiccup Jerry Jones makes).  Players listen to the mainstream and many get their value from their respect/support there and adopt those expectations.  It's human nature and many of us would do the same in their place.  Odell and his QB are in a media fight right now with Cowherd on Fox.  Cowherd LOVES it, it builds his brand.  I am not sure it helps anything in Cleveland for them all to be caught up in it.

The Colts are working hard to find the right personalities/mentalities for this team in part to be able to discount and ignore outside garbage and focus on the job at hand.  We don't have any Social Media stars on this team.  Andrew Luck, who would likely be 100 times more popular if he played the brand-building media games and that would put raw cash in his pockets, but it wouldn't help his game, it wouldn't win late in the 4th Quarter and this team seems to be building for character almost above all else (perhaps it IS above all else).  If you said the Colts ranked all the players first based on that and then brought athleticism and positional fit just below, I would believe it.  And I think courage to overcome exhaustion and distraction in critical moments (I think it takes internal fortitude to battle through it when all seems lost or at risk) will serve this team very well.

BUT...  we live in a new universe where media of all types, especially social media, rules the roost of today's culture.  No one is 100% immune to it.  Being built up is a way media can either claim they were geniuses to have predicted it, or in most cases, they can then use their own efforts to do so to tear people back down for ratings and $'s when someone succumbs to the pressure and false expectations.

So some might scoff.. but I think you may be on to something.  It was better when no one was paying attention.  It took a big heavy burden completely away from the team.  Sort of like the Pacers when they lost Paul George and blew everyone away coming out of nowhere.  Even this year after losing Oladipo no one thought they could do anything and they finished strong.  If the Colts stumble out of the gate (as we tend to do) the merciless attacks will be legion

    Who needs that?

I have a right to my own opinion. No? You decided to “correct” someone online. (Round of applause) Now the world is a better place.

No, I asked what your POINT was? Otherwise, why be a troll? See, you attacked someone for doing something good, THEN you play the VICTIM when someone questions your opinion.  You don't get to have it both ways.

Everyone is posting their opinion, and it is appropriate and common to ask for supporting facts when none are offered.  I am also offering my opinion. See that is how it works, since you apparently don't like others having a response.  If he doesn't deserve to be praised because he did something you don't like with the money he earned, what is your "standard" to support your point of view? Or is he just a target for a cheap shot?

Anytime an unsubstantiated personal attack meets resistance, the world is a better place.  Thanks for the applause.

Irsay has +50 mil in cap space sitting there to spend on players to win this year, and he's not.  I'm not so sure he will throw the bank at Ballard as much as you seem to think.

You pay Ballard money to build a great team with as much open cap space as possible so when a can't miss but higher cost player (or one of your own like Nelson or the Maniac or other high performance Colts players they WANT to resign) is available on the FA market.  It takes a lot of restraint and technique to build a team without throwing money at it.  I am thinking of teams like the Browns who sooner than you think will be in Cap hell if they plan on keeping all those big name players.  Conserve now so you have something to eat later.  It goes for football and everything else in life.

Cap space is for players. Not coaches or GMs. If Ballard does good through his contract, and people still think hes the next up coming great GM, then he will in fact pay the man. You dont let someone like Ballard walk without a reason for it, and money won't be that reason. What makes you think all irsay has is 50 million? Cap space has nothing to do with the front office.

Also that cap space is there for Ballard to spend who's not spending it. Irsay has been on record multiple times saying he likes to not be involved in those decisions. The cap space is ballards to spend or not spend.

I just dont understand where you're coming from.

Also, if you used Google you would see that irsays net worth is 2.7 billion. Not a measly 50 million. No one in this league is going to pay Ballard a billion dollars.

I just wanted to say, good response.  And acknowledge you responded to him before I got to it.  The best point being that Ballard has that amount of money to use as he sees fit without having to go ask "Dad" for the money each time.  That is the only way to run a team in any workplace.  The boss hires the right people to handle the work and keeps his focus on things Owners have to be involved in, which is everything above what goes on the field.  Owners that micromanage rarely win anything.  I think it is even more impressive since few owners have as much hands on experience and knowledge with their franchise as Irsay has, which few people seem to mention.

I know everyone is high on Ballard, including myself, but there is absolutely no way this team has the success it did last year without him. Their may be 2-3 other QB's in the league that could have done it. Remember luck took a worse roster with a much worse gm to the AFC championship game. Without luck we might win 8 games next year but with I expect atleast 11.

Who would you replace Luck with to win 8 games? Unless it is one of the top half starting QB's in the league, I doubt it.  I am not sure I put our back up in the top half of starting QBs, at least not yet.

Have you ever spent half as much as you give to (one) charity on something you enjoy? Why shouldn't he? It isn't his only giving and it isn't his only purchase.  He doesn't have to give anything to anyone.  Why nitpick it?  Are you a better giver than he is? Yes? Yes, it's all speculation.  And this post and your first seem different.  In the first post you were saying that you (and i know you mean you, if you ran the team) would not pay him.  This post you are more saying you don't think Ballard will pay him.  I can understand of you don't think Ballard would pay, but I do disagree to a point with that, because so far we, as fans, have not seen what Ballard will do with an elite player that is one of his finds through the draft or FA, so he may very well make him the highest paid TE in the league if he feels that is warranted.

I don't think I ever indicated that life should stop because I disagree, so I don't really understand that comment.  Again I just don't understand the mindset of wanting a player to play worse so they are easier to sign, or the inverse not wanting to pay a player top money if they perform at a top level.

Did I say I wanted him to play worse? I reread my statement and it isn't there.  I re-stated my entire point as clearly for you as I could.  You're still arguing it though so what is it you want?

If you look at what you bolded (which is what you wanted to debate) I said "we'll" meaning THE COLTS.  Then, in parenthesis I put my opinion that I don't want to have to pay over value because some team is trying to hose us.  Go back and look.  So no, I don't want to pay someone if another team is just jacking us around forcing us to pay over true market value, and I don't think we'll pay a giant deal for a TE worth 23TD level money in the open market.  By WE'LL, I am indicating the Colts, otherwise I would say "I" directly without the parenthesis.

I do not believe Ballard would even give him Graham level money for 3 or 4 years which he would rightfully be looking for (and likely much more).  I also think it's likely someone out there would pay him above that, I just don't think it would be Ballard.  Do you?

And beyond that (since we're still discussing this), if you were the GM would you pay him 10+ million a year for 3-4 years to resign him after 23 TDs in 2 years? If Funchess can bring in 10 mil for a year, it would likely be much more than 10mil to resign Ebron in that scenario.  How much would you pay?
