Not sure if it’s scheme or just because it’s pre-season, but seeing corners lined up nearly 10 yards off the LOS was not encouraging.

That’s the cover 2 for you. Dungy’s defenses always played the corners that far off

Well typically because of your shoulder is injured and there is a risk of reinjuring that shoulder you aren’t going to be lifting the weight on that “hurt” shoulder for risk of having a set back! So as linemen were saying they were having a hard time keeping up with him in the weight room .... plus you don’t get that big lifting 5-10 rehab weights. He’s probably pushing 60-80 if not higher on shoulders alone ..... on top of rehab and rest ..... I honestly believe they are just playing it down. If they say he is full go and LOOKS like he does he will be our starting QB.

you don't understand the difference between the two issues. A linebacker can have a labrum repair and return to lifting and being a linebacker just fine typically. Its a completely different issue with a thrower. I have no doubt luck has been lifting on that shoulder just fine. The issue is when you involve the motion and torque on the joint when you throw a ball. A labrum repair for a thrower is always risky and there will always be a question if the shoulder will return to the level of performance it had before the injury and repair. The forces and torque placed on the shoulder joint by profession quarterbacks and pitchers is incredible if the joint is not healthy it reduces velocity, accuracy and other issues. Basically labrum damage can reduce superman to an average joe velocity wise.

Yep that is the key and what everyone is waiting for, for him to start throwing and then will he have soreness or not? He has obviously been lifting weights and throwing weighted balls but until he throws a real Football we wont know without 100% certainty about his shoulder. I do feel a lot better about this than I did last year though just by the way he looks and his outgoing attitude.

Everyone assumes, I think, that buy "weighted balls" that hes throwing balls that are as heavy or heavier than a football. We don't know that. Baseball players will used balls that are lighter than a real ball. I think its a bad sign that he has yet to throw a football and would find it hard to believe that if he has not at this point that he could be ready for camp.

Charlie Casserly has talked to the Colts brass and they say they're very confident that Luck will be full go for training camp. If Charlie Casserly is reporting this then I'm on board. What does everyone else think I think it's good news. He says he's trowing weighed balls right now but will be full go for training camp. I know we got to wait and see until he actually throws a real football but I still think it's good news and I think he'll be ready to go.

And if Charley Casserly told you that wolverines make good house pets would you believe him?

Some of you know my thoughts on DL. I’ve been preaching it for months. DL was my second favorite player for us in this draft, behind Nelson.

Lets face it, it won't take a lot to crack this LB depth chart. We have very little talent there especially going to a 4-3 alignment. Obviously Will is the most important position in the 4-3 LB corp. Sounds like a solid pick me.

So someone makes a post about an interesting free agent acquisition and somehow it gets turned into an anti-Ballard rant based on WHAT, I have no idea?   I would think this is --- at best --- a complete misrepresentation of any views Ballard has expressed...

Maybe Ballard has to look around for any information Grigson may have left behind on how to spot a talented football player...

    Where does this come from?

I'm not defending his view point but I too feel like Ballard has maybe skewed his draft strategy toward athleticism vs football skill. Time will tell if his draft strategy is a sound one or not.

  7. We have a quite a ways to go before saying we are contenders. We still have a couple of holes that I think exist before we can really say anything about contending. 1) Elite pass rusher 2) better than average running game 3) a healthy Andrew Luck.

    Not directed at you, but:

It doesn’t really matter whether a player might be taken “a little to high” because absolutely no one knows his true value before in a year or two (or three). It is a probability game, and I think it is better just to be a bit excited about the prospect than letting you get down because some media guys think he was taken too early. Our team liked him a lot, should they really take someone else because the media had placed other guys higher that we might be lukewarm on? Surely not.

Sure, it would be more fun if everybody told us that we killed this draft and our GM is a bloody genius, but you’re not getting ahead by following in others footsteps.

The little tape ive seen of him he has a great burst. hope he's Robert mathis 2.0

Many athlete never return from injuries in modern medicine history.

Very True. Ive said from the beginning that it certainly is not guaranteed that Luck will return from this 100% and certainly a chance he cant return as an NFL caliber thrower. This information from him today doesn't give me a lot of confidence that he'll be ready for the season or any season.

Actually, the reason I commented on your original post really had nothing to do with our GM at all. Just over this paralyzing obsession that so many fans have that if Luck can't play our season is over & we might as well capitulate right now. It's crazy. So, if Luck isn't under center throwing by Sept. why even watch this team? I gotta tell ya that mindset is pretty pathetic TAC.

Tell me what roster doesn't need playmakers exactly? I suspect all 32 right.

Look man, since Ballard was hired in INDY, there has been considerable roster turnover. I know that you are saying that we have a lot of needs on defense as well as offensive line upgrades to protect Luck. All that is true. You're not wrong. However, I take issue with anybody who basically creates the false impression that Colts management is hiding something on Luck's recovery & availability like it's intentional. That's absurd.

Believe whatever lunatic conspiracy theory you want TAC. I don't care. But, this team will move forward regardless of who is under center in Sept. I choose to believe Andrew will start & have a solid yr. Feel free to disagree. That's your prerogative.

I'm not saying he wont. Im skeptical but I hope he does. My points are that Ballard needs to hit a homerun in this draft with the picks that he has and add a couple of true playmakers.

We are nearing the end of March not August right? Some INDY fans are turning this Luck not throwing thing into a self fulfilling prophecy I swear. If a person thinks they'll be dead tomorrow, they will probably find a way to make it happen.

No, I disagree. It's not being a realist TAC. It's believing in the worst case scenario 24/7. If we already agree that INDY is at least 2 yrs away from competing for another SB, would it really be that devastating if Jacoby Brissett was under center again? You can't have it both ways. Either we suck without Luck or we can't go far in the playoffs yet cause our defense isn't good enough yet. Which is it?

People have no patience or faith anymore. Sad just sad. Without struggle there is no progress. Neither one of us are abandoning the Colts TAC. Life goes on...

So, because I'm not a fan of Ballard's first draft and I'm concerned that after a year and 3 months that Andrew Luck is still not throwing a real football that I'm believing in the worst case scenario 24/7? I'll stick by my original post, Ballard has to have a great draft this year, better than last year, in order to get things rolling in the right direction. We need a number of playmakers. I know you cant do it in one draft.

I also read up on him. My take was he isn’t the speed LB the Colts will be looking for. Doesn’t move well laterally. Smart player though. Might be best as an ILB in a 3-4 D.

Not sure why you think hes a 3-4 inside LB. He was Iowa's 4-3 MLB for several years and did an excellent job dropping into the deep middle to defend the pass. He'll make someone a good MLB.

Could these two guys be set to have a break out season?

They are both suited to the 4-3 and next gen stats says they are both fast players http://www.colts.com/news/article-1/Two-Colts-Named-To-2016-‘Next-Gen-Stats-All-Rookie-Team’/02a09c3d-5da7-4883-a2cd-f5a2d32b6a20.

I will be intrigued to see how they pan out this upcoming season with the scheme changes.

I don't think either one stand much of chance of breaking out of anything except the NFL after next season.

    Darn TAC,

You sure know how to spread optimism don't ya? To take your post to heart, we sound worse than Cleveland right now. Why are you mentioning Mathis, Clark, Saturday, Freeney, & James BTW? That era great sure, but the NFL is not in the duplication business. With new blood & new faces, the page gets turned. We can't be a slave to our past. You evolve or you die.

I figure in 2 & a half to 3 yrs, the Colts will start competing for division crown titles again & making deep playoff runs again. Jesus man, you make Luck sound like he's a wounded animal who needs to be put down. Take a deep breathe TAC. It's never as bad as first glance might indicate my friend.

I respect your football IQ & I realize that you're just trying to be brutal for our own good. I get that & I agree with you that patience is in order. I just refuse to believe that INDY is a triage unit left for decay & death.

I mentioned those players because they were all, for the most part, playmakers. We have maybe 2 on the team now if Luck returns to form. As for Luck, I'm just being a realist. He still isn't throwing a football that we know of. He's working with Tom House. Fantastic. He's been rehabbing for over a year. This is a HUGE question mark still.

Take off "whole new coaching staff" and 2/3 of the teams do everything else you listed every year.  The title of the thread is "Complete Rebuild", so Luck has absolutely everything to do with it.

Teams don't change schemes every year. You're splitting hairs when you say if they were moving on from Luck it would be a complete rebuild. Sure, Luck is still the franchise QB so that piece is in place, kind of. Until I actually see him throwing passes in live drills Luck is still a huge question mark. As far as how things go in the NFL its pretty much a complete rebuild, JMO.
