I remember Moss whiffing on one and he came running from the other side of Minshew after the ball was snapped which means they didn’t account for him in the preplay reads which was on Minshew because they said he was doing that with Kelly out.  The other two I remember being free shots with Minshew not even knowing he was coming.

Overall I was happy with the line.  Nelson had a monster game.  He was clearing a hole just about anytime the Colts ran behind him.  Him and Rainmann are locking down the left side.  French was serviceable but they really miss Kelly and him doing blocking assignments.  Fries/Sell did their job for the most part.  Smith had a rough game.  He gave up one sack and two badly timed false starts.  The latter happens on the road at times.  I think had it been Nelson or Raimann people would be more understanding but Smith has kinda turned into the forum whipping boy a little bit.

The second time he was lined up on Minshew left and Minshew moved him to his right side and that was the side Hamilton came in. Moss didn't slow him down even.

Couldn't help noticing Raimann standing aside of Nelson on the field. He looks every bit as big as Nelson if not bigger. Still see him listed at 303 even though he said he was up tom 315 but looks bigger. Most important now though is he is playing well.

Four and they sacked Minshew five.  It should be noted three of those came on the Colts failing to recognize Hamilton blitzing in presnap reads and let him come unblocked so they beat the line twice.

Moss whiffed on 2 of those. Minshew moved him to the blitzer side twice but missed him both times. Thought the patched upm OL played decent today considering. Thought Smith had some rough times as much as any OL. Minshew definitely took some hits though.

He said he would, and I hope he does. I'm convinced it would make him a better HC.

    Amen.

Watching that video, Simms basically says that Young isn't passing the eye test.  And he says that Thielen is their #1WR when he would be #3 on most good teams.  I think the fans drilling right past those issues and complaining about Frank's play calling being the problem after two games is directly caused by the moment

I agree about snap to throw also being a function of having nowhere to throw the ball, which could be because of scheme as well as talent.

    um gained by internet forums.

I and many others have complained about Reich's play calling for the last 3 yrs. He's as creative as a tree stump. Not saying he can't coach but it is my opinion that he spends way too much time on play calling which is certainly not his forte and not enough time coaching so at this stage the jury is still in session as to whether he is a decent coach. Some coaches are quite capable of doing both but it helps your coaching ability if you are a good play caller and Frank is not in my opinion.

Yeah you got it, it's pretty simple. They can cut him after this season with an $8m cap penalty, and that would save the Colts $12m on the 2024 cap.

I just don't understand why we're talking about Leonard this much after two games. This is a January-March topic, IMO.

It is a message board and the concern I have is the type of injuries he has had in his short career. He had ankle surgery, and 2 back surgeries since initially injuring  his back in 2020. My concern has been his back and potential nerve damage. I am living proof that nerve damage can be permanent and quite debilitating. God forbid that is his problem but 2 back surgeries tells me he has some potentially serious back issues.

I hope time heals all but he doesn't look like the old Shaq. We have 15 games to play till January-March so I thought it is a topic to be discussed during the season. Several people have stated their opinion and that is what this forum is for, is t not?

  5. He seems to be a lost ball in tall weeds out there. Just seems lost and no factor at all the first two games. Seems to be lighter than prior years. Express my concern if he would ever be the same after watching him last year and found myself well in the minority. Hope I am wrong and he starts to come around . Franklin and Speed are doing well but would never be able to replace Leonard's playmaking ability. Miss his TOs and his occasional ability to get some occasional pressure and sacks.

I don't "blame" JT at all for 2021, he was the best player on the team by a long shot. I also didn't say that he made no difference to the team's prospects. I said we saw that there's a limit to how much a star RB can lift your team.

And you're kind of making my point about the importance of an elite RB. The position that really changes a team's trajectory is QB, which is why the Colts gave up those picks and paid that money to Carson Wentz in the first place. Just because we had a bad QB doesn't mean the QB position isn't the most importance piece of the puzzle.

I also don't understand how a bad QB performance is evidence that it's okay to overpay your RB.

Don't think I insinuated that. Just saying he carried the offence pretty much that year. The message is it's a team game and everyone has to contributeto the team success, not just the QB. if the QB and the entire team played better we would have made the playoffs and I believe and have made some noise in the playoffs.

We obviously are not on the same page as I believe we are most of the time so on to a new subject. If I am wrong then I accept that and let's move on.

It's simpler than that. We had JT performing like an elite RB in 2021, but he was on a rookie contract with a $1.8m cap hit. That's a huge value add for a team, but as we saw, there's still a limit to how much a RB can do for your team's prospects.

Whereas having an elite RB with a $15m cap hit (for instance), sure it's nice to have the elite performance, but we know his contributions are going to be capped. And now he's taking up a greater share of your available cap space, in effect costing you another player.

Long story short, the argument is NOT that simply having an elite RB somehow hurts your team. The argument is that committing major cap resources to having an elite RB is likely taking away from the quality of your roster in other areas.

You may or may not agree with that premise, and that's fine. But let's be clear about what the premise is to begin with. Because no one is arguing that having an elite RB is a bad thing. The argument is about the cap strategy of paying an elite RB.

To the bolded. In 2021 you mentioned that the elite RB made no difference to teams prospects and we had a QB on that team that led Philly to  a Super Bowl. In 2021 he cost the Colts over 14 times what JT cost the Colts plus a third round draft choice plus a 2022 first round choice. Wentz truely sucked in 2021 so in this case do you blame the elite RB who was paid way, way less than the QB who was bad or put some blame on the QB? Would you agree that with decent QB play that elite RB could have contributed to the teams prospects?

I agree we probably won't agree and it is all more than likely a moat point so I guess we just agree to disagree.

It was a direct question. If you don't see a difference between having an elite RB and paying an elite RB (specifically at an elite salary), then it's a moot point.

So if are you saying having an elite RB is good and paying an elite RB is different as long as you pay on elite money and you pay the other non elite RB money yes I understand. That could be said for any position but what does it mean when it was said 'No' to paying a RB diminishs the chance to win a Super Bowl?

Are you really comparing QBs to RBs in this scenario? There is no position in football more important than the QB and no position who’s quality of play is more tied to wins than the QB.

The only thing that can offset a great+ QB is an entire elite defense and the price of that, total, is much more expensive than the QB. Agree

The point is the extra wins added for an elite RB over a good RB is, frankly, neglitible, but the difference in pay can be what amounts to a quality guard for instance. Totally Disagree                                                We’re already close to bumping the cap this season and we quite possibly have to sign some big pay checks next year.

I don’t dispute JT is elite or that he is fun as heck to watch gallop down the field, but long term spending big on a RB is bad business. You pay A LOT for the extra 15% performance. Way low                 And again, that’s just looking at performance and ignoring the fact that RBs get a lot more injury prone after their rookie contract.

I really don’t understand why some here can’t see this. Some just see “good player = must pay”, but the GM has to build a team with a set amount of money. You can’t pay everyone and some positions are a lot more important than others.

So pay an rb even when doing so lessens our chances of winning.

    No

Are you suggesting we increase our chanse of winning with the RBBC we fielded Sunday? 25 yds on 16 carries and 2 fumbles. Do you really think we have a chance of winning the Superbowl this year. Are you really suggesting that if we paid JT 8M more with incentives we are jeopardizng our chance of winning the Superbowl this year. I'm a Colt fan and I like to see a competitive and best team fielded we can put out on the field each week.

I don’t have disdain for JT. But I’ve said multiple times I’m against paying elite RBs above market value or even just top market value.

I’m especially against paying top dollar for players at a position that notoriously gets substantially more injury prone after their rookie contract.

Do we currently have a need at RB? Possibly. Likely, even. Does that mean you throw $13m year after a position where elite players haven’t won super bowls in two decades on top of them being injury prone? How about no…

Out of the top 15 highest paid QBs in the NFL today 4 have won a superbowl. Top 5 average $50,000,000 per year and out of those 5 one has won 1 superbowl. To pay an elite RB a few Million more a year and a top 5 QB a few million less are you suggesting that you diminish your chance for winning a Superbowl?

My point is only one QB out of 32 teams is going to win a Superbowl each year. Winning the Superbowl is the ultimate but having a winning and an exciting team sells tickets and excites the fan base. If your most exciting player on  your team is an elite RB pay him. In our case the chance of us winning a Superbowl this year is as probable as Ball State winning the national championship. No offense Ball State fans but 2nd place woundn't be bad!😎

  12. Wow! The disdain for JT is unbelievable. He had one injury in 3 years. About the same as Nelson,Kelly,Smith, etc. Ev ery player in the league wants security from injury. That's why so many guaranteed contracts. My hope is we sign him with incentives and he playss for the next 8 years for the Colts. After Sunday whoever thinks the RBBC is better than an elite RB God help you.

So, I’m rewatching the game right now.

Our very first drive of the game. 3rd & 8. Smith beat by Josh Allen. AR was moving, but clearly with the intent to pass.

    2nd Qtr. 0:34 remaining. 1st & 10. Smith beat by Walker. How this wasn’t called a sack I don’t know.

    Both instances were speed rush.

But,but I thought Fries was the big problem on the OL.

Over the top? He’s a backup at best on about 75 percent of any NFLs roster. He is just simply not that good. If you watch the tape you can see that. The bad outweighed the good. He had far more bad snaps than good ones.

Amazing how many great NFL talent scouts we have on this site.
