If I was a betting man I would say no. But I also think it depends on who is available. I saw that it is a very real possibility Harbaugh leaves Michigan. Me being an Ohio State fan, I'm undecided if I want Urban to come to Indy if he decided to leave college football. Both are great coaches. Tom Coughlin and John Gruden are the other two I would love to have.

If the Colts pitched to Harbaugh I think he would listen mostly due to Luck being the QB. I don't think he would come though. Meyer I think is completely out of the picture. He has no ties to the current team like Harbaugh does and he has it made at Ohio State whereas Harbaugh is not nearly as established at UM. You never know though.

I would prefer to take a chance on a hot assistant in the NFL. McDaniels would do wonders for the Colt's offense. He has that first stint in Denver that may somewhat hold him back from being on peoples' radars, but he has been a top assistant for NE now for years. There are probably some other good candidates out there in assistant positions. I just prefer they have more than 1-2 years experience as a coordinator unlike Pagano did when Pagano was hired.

Neither Moncrief or Dorsett were very polished WRs coming out of college.  It shows.  For that matter , neither was TY.

By contrast, Marvin and Reggie were each one of the most polished and NFL ready receivers coming out during their respective drafts.

Personally, I'm for overhauling the entire receiving corps including the last 2 FAs signed, TY and DA.

I agree except I would keep TY. Luck to TY is about the only good thing on the team at the moment. He's maybe not quite a No. 1 receiver but he is very close.

  3. Was listening to Colin Cowherd today, and he said there are basically six franchises in the NFL that are incompetent when it comes to how they are run. The Colts were one of those named. And Cowherd is a big Luck fan. I know opinions on Cowherd vary, but it is hard to argue with him.

The Colts don't really do anything really well. There is nothing our team can hang their hat on and say "this is what we do and this is our identity." We rely on our star quarterback to make plays. When he plays well, we usually win. When he plays even average or less we generally lose. This team has no identity and still, after five years, has a bad offensive line and very below average defense. That was acceptable in 2012 in year 1, not so much now. The coaching, specifically on offense and "head coach" type decisions, has been very sub-par as well, and while that was maybe okay for a new head coach in year 1, it isn't 5 years into the regime.

There isn't really ONE problem here. It is a culture problem honestly. And I like Pagano, but it might be time to make a change in the offseason in both coaching and personnel by getting the old guys out of here and really starting to build a foundation. At this point I am ready to take a chance on a hot assistant even if we can't get a Harbaugh to come coach (which the Colts won't). Preferably an assistant with more than 1 year being a coordinator too as was the case with Pagano when we hired him.

So would you rather make the playoffs this year or have a much greater chance of better in the off season?  It's an either or question.  Just curious.

I guess I don't consider us picking 15 or 28-32 to be a very significant difference. I would much rather get into the playoffs and make a deep run and not win the Super Bowl rather than miss the playoffs altogether and get to pick 15th. This team can get better by picking smartly in the draft no matter where they draft at, and the added experience of making playoff runs is experience that will pay dividends in seeking a SB and is more important in my mind than draft position.

Browns and Jags pick in the top 10 every year lately and they are pathetic franchises. Winning creates confidence that permeates throughout entire team.

Who have we beat this season?  When you show me a win vs a team that you would consider "unequivocally better" than the Colts coming into the game let me know.  And honestly the only game this season that's left that we can show that is @OAK (giving they stay relatively healthy and are still playing for something).  If we beat HOU, @MIN or JAX this year will you say the Colts were "unequivocally worse" than any of those teams going into the game?  Honestly?

@ GB I would say is not a game anyone expected the Colts to win, especially on the road, regardless of the way the Packers were playing at the time. @ Tennessee also looks like a pretty good win in retrospect. Moving forward, while they have trouble scoring, winning @ MIN will also be a tough one. That's a very good defense the Colts will face. Maybe they are not "unequivocally worse" than Minnesota, but there are only 2-3 "complete" teams in the league this year. Most teams have holes on one or both sides of the ball. Minnesota just has the opposite problem as the Colts with a bad offense but good defense.

And I am not in love with Grigson, Pagano, or anyone else. However, missing the playoffs is not something anyone should want. Two years ago, had the Ravens beat the Pats, the Colts would have hosted the AFC Champ game and probably have been favored to go to the Super Bowl. While I agree it is hard to see this team winning on the road @ NE, @ OAK, or @ KC in the playoffs, it is possible. Get into the playoffs and see what happens.

  6. Part of the performance had to do with it appearing that the Jets had mailed the season in. However, Luck did look very sharp. Part of what really helped for a change was plenty of time in the pocket to throw it. He got sacked and pressured a few times but predominantly was well-protected for most of the night. It was a welcome change. Not sure I would rate this his best, but it is definitely up there.

  7. "Pound Cake" plays with nastiness/an edge. You need players on defense that have that, and quite frankly, the Colts don't have too many of them. He needs to keep playing and be a central part of the defense. Maybe he's not a star but he brings a lot of positives. He has impressive closing speed and wants to make a big play.

  8. Are Decker and Marshall playing in this game? They worry me if they are.

Feel like the Colts never play well against the Jets, especially since Luck has been our QB. I think Colts jump out to an early lead of 14-0, then squander the lead in the late 3rd/early 4th and again must have Andrew drive them for a game-winning drive for 3 for the win late. 17-14 Colts.

It just feels like you don't want to give Pep any credit yet you're giving Chud credit when I don't think he deserves much of any. Neither has shown me much of anything.  An example, you say the passes to Bradshaw were designed to go to him. But most passes to RB's are. You create a scheme where the man covering the RB gets caught up in the wash of a natural pick play or you have a good receiving back on a bad coverage LB.  That's great scheming. We see tha Patriots use it often. Saw the Titans & Lions use it effectively against us this season.  Pep deserves credit for that. Not Chud.

The play in the 2nd Titans game was beautiful. Also the game plan in the first Titans game too. I'll give Chud his credit when he deserves it. I just think Pep should get the same for giving us Luck's best statistical season and Pep also got creative at times. I remember a play where we brought a receiver in quick motion, snapped the ball, and hit him with a flare pass that turned into a kind of bubble screen for a touchdown. So Pep did use some creativity especially in the red zone. That last Titans game was the most creative we've seen Chud get. Judging by his recent track record, we probably won't see it again...   Problem with both Pep & Chud is neither has done or did enough to garner consistent praise and credit.  Luck deserves better than what Pep gave last year and most definitely better than the helter skelter game plans Chud is giving him this year.

You're right. I don't want to give Pep credit. Nor do I think he deserves any. And I am not saying Chud has been a tremendous asset to Luck, merely that Luck appears to be more willing to dump it off to the running back (on non-designed throws to the RBs) this season. Pep drew up some good plays here and there, but for the most part he was very below average to bad as an OC.

I agree with your take on the scheming in the Titans games.

That's not true though Dudley.  Luck's best statistical season was 2014 when Pep was the coordinator.  That year tight ends and backs accounted for 25 of Luck's 40 touchdowns.  That's not including the 1 to Castonzo.  Bradshaw-6, Fleener-8, Allen-8, Tipton-1, Doyle-2. I think it was actually Pep that taught Luck to take advantage of his check downs and dump offs.  Why they got away from it that next season is a mystery but regardless it cost Pep his job.

Chud has only shown flashes of putting together a competent game plan and having built in counters or a secondary game plan for when our opponents adjust.  Also Luck is nowhere near reaching the numbers he reached that year under Pep but Chud has a better Oline, better running back, and more dynamic receivers.  So from what I've seen, Chud has done nothing to show he's taught Luck anything better than Pep did.  He probably is a better O.C. than Pep but it sure isn't translating onto the field.  I wouldn't be mad if he was sent packing after this season and we get the right coach and coordinator in here before it's too late and Luck becomes broken (both physically and psychologically).

I'm certainly not in love with Chud, but I like him a hell of a lot better than Pep (Pep went to the Browns and since he has been there they are somehow worse than before). I don't have any statistics to back up what I am saying, but even in 2014 I don't feel like Luck really checked down to the RB all that often. Most of those passes that went to Bradshaw seemed like they were typically drawn up to be thrown to the RB. I will agree that a lot more passes seemed to go to the TEs than they do now.

The big play in the Tennessee game to Gore I don't think you would have seen when Pep was OC. I think Luck would have either forced it downfield or just tried to run because I don't think you would see Gore pop out after throwing a block.

Lets make the playoffs so we can be embarrassed on a nationally televised game!!

    Sounds like a plan....

    Go COLTS!

I don't understand why anyone is ever worried about what we look like on TV. If this was college football, then I could to a certain extent for recruiting reasons. But in professional sports, if you lose 21-20 or 45-10, no one outside of those two particular fan bases is going to remember the actual score the following year, nor does it make any difference whatsoever.

You should always want your team in the playoffs. Not just because a top 10 pick is not a guaranteed impact player as others have mentioned, but more importantly because anything can happen once you are in the playoffs and can build some momentum.

I think Chud has helped Andrew recognize that it is okay to dump off a pass and let your running back pick up the yards for you. That drove me crazy with Pep and his offense where there was never a safety valve for Luck. That said, it does seem like going to a more tempo-offense ala Manning where the ball gets out very quick and you are throwing to different spots and letting the receiver get there would make a lot more sense with as bad as the Oline is. However, I think some of this is Andrew too. I think he hangs on to make the big play downfield intentionally at times rather than take a shorter pass.

At times, Luck's release seems a little slow to me too. Much slower than Stafford or Rodgers for instance. It might help somewhat for a coach to help him correct that, although that is fairly far down the list as reasons for him getting sacked.

  13. This game is probably the easiest one left on the schedule outside of the Jags, so if there is any hope of them going to the playoffs, Colts must win this one.

I'm willing to forget the Thanksgiving fiasco since Luck didn't play (not that it gives the D a free pass), so I will say I like the Colts in this one since (with Luck) they have been playing relatively well recently.

  14. Colts just need to win out. I think Tennessee is actually probably the most complete team out of the Colts, Texans, and Titans, but Colts have their number and own the head to head. Texans look very underwhelming right now. They definitely downgraded from Hoyer to Osweiler. That has become clear. Colts still have the most potential of the three just due to having Luck, but can anyone honestly see this team -- even fully healthy -- going into Foxborough, Kansas City, Oakland, or Denver and winning on the road? That is assuming it got past the wildcard which wouldn't be a gimme.

I still want them to make the playoffs. I feel like no one gave the last two Giants Super Bowl winning teams a chance either and we know how that turned out.

While I liked Morris way more in preseason, it makes most sense for the coaches to go with a vet that has had more reps with guys. Morris has shown flashes of high ceiling potential, but his floor is also very low based purely off NFL experience

Can't disagree. I don't expect them to start Morris. He looks better than Tolzien by the eye-test IMO though. I think he would give us a better chance to win tomorrow night than Tolzien. Not that our chances are good with either of them.

    Solid topic.

Morris was on the practice squad for a reason

Right. And Tolzien is some world-beater who is clearly better. When you're done being a condescending jerk and ready to talk about specifics let me know.

  17. Since Luck is definitely out tomorrow night, I want Morris as the starter. Nothing against Tolzien, but the team needs points, and Tolzien isn't equipped to do that with limited arm strength and mobility. We probably don't win this game no matter which guy is back there, but Morris has a bigger arm to take advantage of our WR speedsters and he can move with his feet when the Oline breaks down. Morris adds some much needed wrinkles to our offense without Luck. Morris please.

    1. Yes, I see now your response was with taking players off a practice squad.

    2. I think part of the reason people, myself included, prefer Morris over Tolzien is that Morris has at least showed some presence on the football field and has shown he can make big plays. Tolzien is a game manager at best, and maybe he would be okay on a team like Seattle, LA, or Minny where there is a great defense. However, the Colts need points to help out our defense. Tolzien is not going to be the guy to put points on the board. He is very limited. Morris not only has a bigger arm to take advantage of Hilton and Dorsett, he can move with his legs which will help with our Oline woes. I would love to be wrong about Tolzien, but being a Big 10 guy (MSU fan) I watched him at Wisconsin and wasn't impressed, and he has been bad in the NFL since entering the league. I am surprised he has even made it in this long in the NFL. If he starts tomorrow we aren't going to win the game. We probably don't win it with Morris, but he at least adds some interesting possibilities that may help put up some much needed points.
