Not a fan.  He knows basketball.  But, overall...he gets on my nerves.....

MSU basketball fan here -- in addition to being clueless about the NFL, the guy is awful to listen to during basketball games on ESPN as well, often trashing 18-19 year old kids. He really is just terrible all around. Why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to listening to a radio show with him as host is astonishing. There must be a lot of masochists around these parts.

  2. I am not convinced that Pagano is definitely back in 2017 no matter what has been said to this point. I think Irsay is smart enough to know that a new GM will want to have their own guy in as HC and will not tie their hands. That is the quickest way to not only cause a quality candidate from taking the job but also to create another situation where GM and HC don't see eye to eye.

I do think it is true that it would give the GM a "free year" next season since if it is terrible Pagano is gone -- clean slate then for 2018. I just don't think you waste another entire year seeing if Pagano pans out when Luck's years in the league (especially with the punishment he takes -- which hopefully will change) are finite.

Someone from the Seahawks organization would be great IMO. The way they conduct business is 2nd only to the Pats in terms of maximizing potential and finding talent.

Irsay HAS to get council from the right football minds as to who to go after in free agency and the draft. He HAS to make this team an attractive sell to Peyton and a quality HC candidate again. Right now it isn't.

I'd like to believe that but what is more likely is that the people he has talked to simply aren't interested period (Peyton, Gruden, etc.). It has nothing to do with the state of the roster, which could probably be drastically improved in just a couple of seasons with the right FA signings and draft choices.

He got a very raw deal in his first year by having to play with so many different backup QBs, the Josh Gordon debacle, basically losing ALL of his quality offensive linemen, etc. Their putrid record is a huge indication of that.

But look at how well the Terrelle Pryor at WR experiment worked. He went from fringe roster guy to the Browns leading WR, and tallied over 1,000 yards. I'm not saying Jackson's primed to be Belichick 2.0, but that type of outside-the-box thinking, coupled with the fact that he is an innovative offensive mind, is why I think he'll be a good HC.

Pryor was actually recruited by a number of teams as a WR out of high school (including Notre Dame I believe). He went to Ohio State because Jim Tressel allowed him to play QB. His true talent has always been as a receiver, so I am not sure it is really all that far-fetched what Jackson did. I guess I will give a little credit since no one thought to try it before now with him.

  6. 27-21 Pats

Just don't see them losing this one. Brady had a subpar game against the Texans and I don't see him having a second poor game in a row. If he is locked in I think they take this at home.

    34-30 Falcons

Would love to see Rodgers advance, but I think in the end the GB defense is just too banged up. Rodgers will have to score almost every time on the field to keep up against the prolific Falcons offense, and I think the Falcons D won't stop him but they will slow him down more than the GB defense slows down Matt Ryan and their run game.

  7. I think I agree that this probably isn't a big deal. However, I also agree with those on the other side of the aisle questioning why Luck was playing in the final game of the season if there was any lingering concern in the shoulder. That just seems silly to expose him to risk when there is literally nothing to gain from him playing at that point.

And the final game was good. Vintage game-winning drive by Luck for a feel-good moment in a season that didn't have too many of those (and I got to see it in person to boot). Just not sure it was justified if there was a lingering injury in his shoulder. Whether or not Pagano is on the hot seat, Pagano shouldn't risk the franchise just to keep his job (if that is in fact why Luck played).

  8. The only two college head coaches that would be worth a shot are Harbaugh and Saban, and neither one is likely at all. Otherwise, our search should stay in the NFL.

While I think it may have been a bit tongue in cheek, I actually think Jim Bob Cooter wouldn't be a bad choice with how well Detroit's offense has done this year immediately following Calvin Johnson's retirement. He has somewhat re-invented Matt Stafford. Plus, I just personally really want an offensive mind to be HC.

Attendance would be the first thing that would suffer

I was at the game on Sunday. It did look like it was suffering.  Only looked to be about 75%-80%. Not what we are used to seeing. Granted, the game was meaningless and it was against the Jags.

Will be interesting to see what it looks like first thing next season.

neither are inept at their jobs.  they've both made mistakes, but making mistakes doesn't mean you're inept...it means you're human.  If they were truly inept they wouldn't have made it 2 years with the Colts.

Without knowing what goes on behind closed doors, it is hard to say Pagano is an inept coach in general. However, I think we can agree that his TO/game clock management has been borderline inept at times. That said, I think the biggest reason why many view him as underwhelming (myself included) is mostly due to him being billed a "defensive coach" and yet our defense has stunk up the joint to varying degrees every season he has been here outside of a performance or two per year. Part of that is talent of course, but you would like to see a defensive mind be able to scheme better to hide some of the deficiencies.

Regardless, unless the Colts lose these last two games and are under 500 I think both he and Grigson are back next season.

I don't totally disagree with this. But at the same time, outside of Gore & Castonzo, there aren't any older vets on offense. Everyone was drafted 2012 or later.

When I made the comment I was immediately thinking of Castonzo, but I could see people like TY and Allen reacting negatively as well even though they are the same age. Between TY's drops and Allen's poor play in general there would certainly be opportunities to give both of them hell. My main point was you can't simply go after only the youngest guys -- if you hold Dorsett accountable you'll need to hold everyone accountable.

Luck shouldn't try to emulate anyone or try to be something that he isn't, but Tom Brady absolutely laid into Julian Edelman on the sideline on Monday night for slowing down on a route that almost resulted in an interception. Needless to say, Edelman didn't make that mistake a second time. If you ask me, every one of our WRs could use that type of kick in the rear end from time to time.

The problem with this whole line of thinking is that everyone on the team knows Luck isn't one to lead in that way. He runs the risk of coming off as not being genuine if he suddenly morphs into a drill sergeant on the field. Granted, I think as he becomes an older vet he can get away with it more. But older veterans will not respond well to someone raking them over the coals -- even by the best player on the team -- if that player is younger than they are. It is just the way people are.

Now for Dorsett, who is younger than Luck, I think it might work. But then the problem is if Luck does that to Dorsett, he better be prepared to do it to every single person on the offense when they start playing poorly. It turns into a lose-lose IMO.

  13. Is it his fault "to a degree?" Yes, it is. But not nearly to the degree of the coaches. His talents are not getting maximized in a vertical offense. Yet every OC he has had in the NFL, be it Arians, Pep, and now Chud insist on putting him in one.

Also, outside of TY and Jack Doyle, Luck really doesn't not have sure-handed receiving targets who run crisp routes either. I love TY, but even he drops too many passes. Manning was so good for so long because he had receivers who ran crisp routes and got rid of the ball quickly. I don't think Luck is Manning, but I think he could be great in a Manning-type offense and it would lead to far less hits on him because it wouldn't require him to sit in the pocket holding onto the ball trying to make something happen 20-30 yards downfield with regularity. While Luck has had his share of problems, the primary problem is chiefly on the coaches.

And this is before we even start talking about the lackluster defense.

I'm not saying I wouldn't question any play calls   BUT  if you do your job the play should work

Except the other team is allowed to try to stop the play. Certain plays in certain situations are not as appropriate as others because they are less likely to succeed based on what the defense is going to do. Such as a screen pass on 4th and 1 against man coverage. The coaches need to call a play that is more likely than not to work. How about giving the ball to Gore or Turbin to simply run for a yard after spreading the defense out with a 3-4 receiver set? That would have put the players in a better position to convert the 1st down. That had little to do with effort or execution on the player's part and everything to do with what the call was. Just one example of many.

i am not saying cut the bum but dang grow a pair and and start holding other people accountable.

How do you know he doesn't? We aren't privy to every conversation Luck has in games much less in practice. Not only that, but I doubt that Manning and Brady were reaming people out for a missed block or bad route 5 years into their careers on a regular basis. When you are an older vet that kind of thing gets a lot easier to do.

  16. Is this an official, dreaded "vote of confidence?"

Regardless, nothing is finalized yet. It really doesn't matter if Pagano is safe right now. What matters is whether he is safe in another month when the season is over. If he loses 2 of the last 3 games, I think there is a chance he is gone. If he is at 8-8, I think he is definitely going to stay at least another year. This goes for Grigson too.

When Luck threw the ball Allen was 2inches from the ground already. I don't like Allen very much but that INT isn't on him. Second, you just said it was dumb to have him block Clowney one-on-one.

Even if Allen was in the process of falling as the ball was leaving Luck's hands, I doubt in actual game time Luck can notice this fact as he is winding up and subsequently pull the pass back when he realizes Allen is heading towards the dirt. Luck didn't play well yesterday, but that first INT was not his fault.

  18. I feel bad admitting this but back in 2012 I was actually hoping the Colts took a look at Fisher for HC. I always thought he did fairly well with at Tennessee with average talent and thought he could actually do pretty well with a good quarterback. Probably a good thing that didn't come to pass. Not that LA has the greatest talent itself.

I believe two or three were retained this year. Maybe another purge is needed. Obviously, the three top guys aren't leaving.

I'm not sure what you mean by "three top," but if Pagano stays, Chud and Ted aren't going anywhere after 1 year being in those positions full time. Only way to get rid of them is to can Pagano.

I actually liked the Philbin and Schottenheimer hires before the season. The OL isn't as good as I had hoped with Phibin being in that position, but it is hard to gauge with so much shuffling due to injuries.
