Kind sir, I am a loooooooonnngggg time lurker, rare poster. The “always here, but nobody knows it” type.

Reading your posts, I ran through a range of thoughts on how to proceed. To be clear, this entire post is genuine and not sarcastic.

I am electing not to engage with the specific content of your posts, as we have diverse view points that I don’t anticipate finding a ton of middle ground on. Initially, I had some strongly opinionated responses. I ran through scenarios of how I thought they would be received by you and the forum in my head. Then I had an epiphany. I sat back and thought to myself, “Golly, this is a very passionate Colts fan! He maintains the energy to post very consistently to advocate for his view point. I can’t even muster the energy for that myself most of the time.” And for that I salute you. I respect your passion tremendously.

Without risking a debate, I just want to acknowledge that many here do not believe Sam Ehlinger to be an NFL caliber QB. I’m asking you to just consider something. We all love the guy. He’s a nice guy with a good story out of Texas. Perhaps every GM in the NFL knows that he’s not an NFL quarterback. But he’s a good camp body who brings consistency with the playbook and familiarity with the system. I sort of think of him like I do Scott Tolzien, who I actually had a safety on in HS when he played for Fremd. I rooted for him when he played for the Colts, and I supported him when he played for other teams as a back up, but everybody knew he wasn’t an NFL quarterback… He didn’t need more playtime to confirm what most already knew. Sam Ehlinger is of the same ilk.

To present a counterpoint, Sam has been afforded a generous luxury of being on an NFL roster for more time than he probably should have. For context, he will make $1,055,000 in 2024 to go through the motions. He has severe limitations in his chosen profession, but his hard work and grit will earn him a salary that exceeds what 99.99% of us on this forum will make this year. Congrats to Sam. That is his superbowl, and he won!

But with all due respect, can we move past arguing over backup/ third string QB’s and moves that are already done, and start to enjoy the excitement of this actually being a year that our FO seems to be embracing as a contender season? This free agency period is starting to build some excitement for the first time in a little while! Can we create some type of vibe on the forum this off season that allows us all to enjoy ourselves for once? We deserve it lol.

I am stoked for what is to come. Regardless of how this season plays out, I am freaking excited to have the opportunity to be excited for the Colts in mid March for the first time in a long time! And I LOVE having the opportunity to look forward to a season again!

    Go ‘Shoe!

Thanks. Just to follow up on your post,..

I disagree with your forgone conclusion that everyone knows Sam not an NLF QB.

As a matter of fact, Sam is indeed an NFL QB. And probably will be for some time forward.

I would like to be stoked too. But am having a bit of trouble with that, seeing as our FO is once again re-signing all the same players we've had for the past few years, and It's hard for me to see us improving, without making any changes to fill the holes.

I know it is still early, but up to this point, it's looking like another repeat of 2023... (or maybe worse?) While watching all three of our division rivals improve their rosters significantly.

However, I do believe we still have a bit of cap space? and perhaps another signing or two should be coming down the pike?

And of course the draft is super important for this teams success in 2024. Just hoping the FO can make the most of these opportunities.

What I like about this forum is the freedom to talk, whether positive or negative, about all aspects of the Colts franchise.

But as for the joyful vibe... My vibe is always dictated by the teams performance, and the FO making the right moves and decisions.

And you are right... We do deserve it.,

I object less to you not being excited about the signing, you are entitled to like or not like any signing you want.  It was more you thinking signing Flacco to mentor Richardson  was such a radical unprecedented idea even though it happens to just about every rookie QB in the NFL.

Not at all. But my position is just that we really don't know that was the driving force behind the signing. I am not sold (that the mentor aspect) was the case. All players are different. Perhaps Minshew is a better mentor than Flacco? We really dont know their personalities? Or teaching skills? I only know what I see them do on the field. I think Ballard's signing of Flacco had more to do with what Joe did in the final 4 games in Cleveland, than any tutoring (of Richardson) he may bring to the table. Perhaps you are right? Perhaps I am? or maybe a little of both?

Maybe he will.  I have nothing against Sam.  If it works out for him good for him.  I just don’t think Sam not getting a chance to be the true number two is the end of the world.

Certainly not the end of the world. But I really shouldn't be getting crucified for simply not being wild about the Flacco signing?

So?  There are thousands of players with stories similar to Sam.  Fair or not Sam got his chance vs the Commanders, Pats, and Texans and it wasn’t enough to make the Colts think he could be a number two.  Like they say when you get a chance in the NFL you have to take advantage of it because you might not get another.  Sam didn’t.  Maybe that’s unfair but that’s the NFL.

I would think he will eventually get another chance. Probably not with Indy, but with another team. He will be older and have more experience. May turn out to be a fine QB perhaps? He seems to have the character and moxxy? Lacking some in the physical areas

I think he’s always going to be a PJ Walker type of guy for us until some other team takes a chance with him.

Right. I just made a similar comment above

I understand what you are saying but the coaches see Sam in preseason and can make better judgements on him than the fans

Yeah. I get what you are saying... But really the only way to see if a guy can play, is to let him play.

It's all just judgement. Even the Colts staff and FO don't really know, outside of practice, since he hasn't played in a meaningful game, excluding preseason (where he usually excels) and when he was thrown out there with a terrible line.

Oh well, it is what it is, Have to hope AR can stay healthy (and not suck) or if he does... Hope Flacco can come in and look like he did in those few Browns games at the end of last season.

Is it unfair? Yes. But look, it’s now 2024. He’s been with the team and even though we don’t see his work, the rest of the team does. The coaching staff and Ballard know who Sam is. And for them he’s a QB3. Sorry.

Right. Sam got thrown out there (by Irsay?) vs NE. the team was a mess. then Saturday came in and went back to Ryan.

Steichen come over and the new staff and Ballard wasn't confident enough in Sam to give him the job. So they paid Minshew, and again Sam never got a chance. Now Flacco is here and it's another repeat. Sam will be out of Indy, maybe this year?

I just would have liked to see him get a chance, with a good team, and all the starters playing. I'm not saying I'm convinced he would be good? But I also not convinced, he would'nt be

  7. Just now, RollerColt said:

That chance was basically over after the Patriots game in 2022.

That is a terrible game to blame on Ehlinger. Probably, the worst blocking performance in the Colts history. Perhaps even in the leagues history? Reichs coaching was atrocious. Bill Belichick made our coaching and line look like fools. No QB could have played well under those conditions.

  8. Just now, GoColts8818 said:

Would you have paid Minshew $25 million over two years to back up Richardson because that’s what it would have cost?  That’s also if you can get past the Raiders can offer him a chance to compete to start and the Colts can’t.

I did not want GM back, even at a low cost. Thats the reason I did not like the Flacco signing.  I was hoping we would acquire or draft a mobile, athletic, QB similar qualities to Richardson. and would like to see what Sam could have done if called upon.

Now Sam will either be cut, Or entrenched on the taxi squad.

Because he’s won a Super Bowl, has a wealth of NFL experience, and won’t need to take practice reps from Richardson who badly needs them after last year.  Again, this is not rocket science.  He fits the very mold of putting a vet QB behind a young QB to help teach them.  Teams have done this for decades.  This is nothing new.

Do you know for sure that Flacco is some brilliant teacher of QBs? Is that something you heard? He has a special quality to work with young players? Like I said, perhaps that's not the type of person he is? Maybe he is a great teacher? Or maybe hes just a dumb jock?

    Because Richardson is the starter…

There is no other logical reason to sign him.  Also do you really think Ballard didn’t factor all that in before signing him?  This isn’t rocket science.

So Ballard's biggest concern for the backup is coaching along Richardson?

What make Flacco a better coach than any other veteran QB. Do you know that Flacco has some certain credentials that make him one of top outstanding teachers among quarterbacks?

The more logical reason would be, what many here are saying. He played well in the final 5 games for the Browns

I’m okay with Flacco. Not because of what will happen if he needs to play. If he has to play, we’re screwed.

however, I like the Flacco signing for three reasons:

number 1: no Justin fields trade. Thank freaking God. Fields is a bust, has always been a bust. And would create an unbelievable uncomfortable QB room.

number 2: his long history in the league means he knows how to avoiding injury and keeping his body in a condition to keep playing. Something AR has to learn.

number 3: Flacco has won a lot in the league over the years. He’s seen a ton of different defenses including a couple of the best ever that the Ravens had. He can help mentor ARs field awareness, hopefully.

but yea, if he has to play, yikes.

It's almost a certainty he will play. The odds of any QB making it through 17 games is very slim. Especially AR who is reckless and appears to injure easily

  12. 2 minutes ago, GoColts8818 said:

I saw he and another player who is also hurt are having one in April.

Or perhaps he won’t play and just mentor Richardson which is the main goal of this signing.

How do you know the goal of the signing was for Flacco to mainly be a mentor? Every team needs a backup QB. It's obvious he was brought in to play if needed. If he can provide some help in the QB room thats fine. But they didnt pay Joe 9million to be a coach. They have plenty of coaches for that. Perhaps Flacco isnt even the type of QB who helps along the younger QBs? Maybe he keeps to himself? and just earns his pay on the field?

You realize those are designed for AR. Minshew had a habit of freaking out when there was no pressure.

Look. I get most here are happy with the Flacco signing. I am not. He is 40 years old and immobile.

We will be facing many of the leagues top DE/Edge rushers. Our line did ok at times. and they stunk at times. Remember Raiman getting bullrushed over. or the countless times Blake Freeland looked like the human turnstile. We still have assignment trouble with stunts, blitzes etc.

Our offense, with the current line, needs a QB that can move.

It's pointless for me to keep trying to defend my opinion, since the entire forum is enamored with Joe.

So I'm done. We will just have to wait and see.

Perhaps Joe will be outstanding? Or perhaps, after this stint with the Colts, he will be joining Matt Ryan, in the press box, come 2025?

    Not gonna argue anymore.

    Me too I'm done arguing.

Don't have time to watch the video. But I bet it does not show the 2 pick sixes in the 14-45 playoff blowout?

You (and it seems everyone else here) love the Joe Flacco signing.

I do not. We are all entitled to our opinions. Should Flacco be called upon in 2024, (which I believe is a very high probability) I hope you are all right. And since he is now a Colt I will be rooting for him to succeed.

Flacco is a Super Bowl-winning QB that can still outperform several starters currently. Dude has a ton of knowledge and can easily teach AR several things. He wasn’t brought here to be the damn starter. He’s a backup and there isn’t a better backup in the league right now. Again… STOP BEING SO NEGATIVE.

He's been around for like 20 years. I know what Joe Flacco brings. An old QB who needs a clean pocket. Something the Colts have a very hard time providing. Before Cleveland acquired grabbed him in desperation nobody even wanted him. And sorry, this forum is not only for positive feelings and Colts cheerleaders,
