Yes, Turner may not be a great fit.  However, Gus brought Yannick with him, a smaller OLB body type guy.  Yannick languished as a disciplined player and run defender, so if Turner is better in those areas...you never know what the thought is.   Latu looks great, but he's also a bigger guy at around 270, maybe bigger.  Just not sure he's the LEO type or the bendy type to play RDE.  Could be though,

An OT at 15 is very unlikely.  I think its more of a play at 46.  I question the longevity of the right side of the Oline, starting with C.

    Latu has injury concerns

Turner is widely looked at as the best edge rusher in this draft. It would be a reach imo to draft Latu or Verse at 15.

I beg to differ. I was speaking specifically on natural pass rush skills. Most of the draft resources I have read say Latu is the best pure pass rusher. However, its been reported, he is not great setting the edge... Time will tell.

Makes great sense to me.  Thanks for the post.  A few things:

My discussion of the trade up is about whether or not Ballard's team views a couple of players as standouts vs the rest.  If so, then a trade up would not be a surprise to me given that he said he wants more "explosion" (wh0 knows what that means really).  I'm not one of these Ballard critics who says he is simply stuck in his ways and will never trade up.  If there is a trade up, I think its because there probably is a break in talent somewhere around pick 11.  I will trust the professionals to make that assessment as I am not going through a bunch of players to try to second guess who should have been picked the day it happens.

With the players you listed, I don't know that a player at 46 is going to push any of those guys that much.  I'd rather push Paye/Ebukam with Dallas Turner than with another second rounder like Dayo.  JMO.

I also think OT is on the table at 15.  I really do.  If there is a stand out guy there, that's head and shoulders above the rest, why not?  You mentioned Smith is probably reached his peak, and some view him as a true G anyway.  Then if French could replace Kelly next year, AR will have some good young protection for about 5 years.   An OT is not necessarily explosive by himself, but it would allow AR to be more explosive...and would indirectly fit what Ballard was saying about getting more explosive (there are many ways that term can be satisfied later at a press conference, LOL)

There was discussion if the Colts would even activate Paye's 5th year option. Which I believe that decision does not have to be made for quite a while yet. I could definitely see Ballard taking a pass rusher. Turner may go earlier? But I am not convinced the Colts see Turner is the best at that position. Watch for Latu at 15.

a top tier OT should be in consideration, if available? Our line may gave improved a bit last year, but honestly, they were far from stellar

No I get it.  I was just saying that TEN could be more of a threat now that they are liberating their offense.

Yeah. They hired Callahan, who was in the finals for Colts HC. and Levis is like AR. Big, strong, fast, rocket arm. Ballard and Steichen have their work cut out for them to get in playoffs

HOU is at least one season ahead of us in terms of roster build.

JAX is probably one season a way.  2023 a down year as Trevor played through injuries because of no viable backup, JMO.

TEN, probably one season below us.

On paper, it looks like 3rd in the South.

I agree. Although I'm certainly not crowning the Texans.

We always seem to loose to the Jags. (How many more times will Jamal Agnew have big kick or punt return before we learn?)

The Titans are the wildcard. New coach, no Henry or Tannehill. Year two for Levis. Calvin Ridley. Hard to predict with them

  6. Looks possible that Michael Penix may slip into the top 15...

Michael Penix Jr. visited with Broncos on Tuesday, Raiders on Wednesday

...Denver holds the No. 12 pick in the upcoming draft. Las Vegas has No. 13 overall.

Widely expected to be a first-round pick, Penix had his Pro Day workout last week and is set to meet with several teams. He told ESPN that the Giants, Falcons, and Steelers are also on his list for pre-draft visits...

I could see Ballard taking an edge or Dejean at 15, then going best WR available in the 2nd or 3rd.

I think we desperately need a WR that's going to push Pierce

I agree with you here. I'd keep an eye on LAIATU LATU, UCLA

and depending on how Dejean's workout goes, could also see Ballard trading back a few slots... out of 15

WR in 2nd or 3rd round seems likely.  OT and LB also possible early round picks.

He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.

Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.

Could be.  I read where some teams see him as a safety others cornerback.  No consensus.

As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.

Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc.

Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean

Considered one of the Safest picks.

Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level

    DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa

A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.

Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.

First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:

"DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.

"When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.

"While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."

Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.

"His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."

Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons.

A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.

Any news on the attempted talks with Blackmon?

Worst case scenario:  we don't sign Blackmon, or any other safety FA, miss out on what few guys there are in this very non-deep safety draft, and wind up going into the season with Cross and Thomas as our best two guys.  Ewwww.

If they don't sign anyone, I got a feeling Ballard may target Cooper DeJean in the draft

  12. Kareem Jackson

    From Wikipedia

    ...2023

On May 15, 2023, Jackson re-signed with the Broncos on another one-year contract.

Jackson received a $14,819 fine for an illegal hit on Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver Jakobi Meyers in their Week 1 game.

In a Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders, he was ejected after an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit against tight end Logan Thomas, resulting in the latter getting a concussion. His hit on Thomas resulted in a $19,669 fine.

Jackson received a third fine ($11,473) in as many games for unnecessary roughness in a Week 3 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The league issued him a fine for $43,709, Jackson's fourth for the season, for unnecessary roughness stemming from a late hit on the Thursday Night Football loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following his second ejection that season in a Week 7 win for a hit on Green Bay Packers' tight end Luke Musgrave ("defenseless receiver"), the NFL suspended Jackson for four games. They reduced the suspension to two games after Jackson appealed.

In his first game back from suspension, Jackson made an illegal hit on Minnesota Vikings' quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Despite not being penalized in the game, the NFL clarified that Jackson's hit was illegal due to him lowering the crown of his helmet before the hit and issued him another four-game suspension the next day.The league denied Jackson's appeal for his second suspension, upholding their original four-game sentence.

The Broncos waived Jackson on December 25.

    Houston Texans (second stint)

On December 26, 2023, Jackson was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans.

Jackson and head coach DeMeco Ryans were teammates on the Texans during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
