A look back (and ahead) DB/ST

DB- At cornerback, there was strength in numbers, Powers is solid, but hasn't taken his game up a notch-consistently, Davis played well, he has the skill set to be an elite CB, but......Butler was very impressive, when given a chance, Vaughn, is decent and Gordy adds quality depth

At safety Bethea, as always, is a very good and under-appreciated player, Zbikowski, had some good games, but I expected more from a guy who has played in this defense before, Lefeged, is a quality backup and one of the best special team players

next year: In today's NFL (passing league) you better be deep at CB, if you expect to compete, Powers, Butler, Vaughn and Gordy are all free agents, I would expect all to be back, at the right price, but most likely, they won't all be back, shutdown corners are hard to find and a luxury, but any time a team can get one, it increases the quality of the overall defense...bigtime! CB is not a major need area, but teams are always trying to add talent and upgrade that position. At safety, there needs to be some upgrading, with another top level starter and more depth.

special teams: as I mentioned frequently, weren't all that special, wasn't surprised to see the coach move on, this unit has been an ongoing problem area for years, I like what I have heard about the new coach and hopefully, this guy can make a difference. The coverage units were decent, which in itself, is an upgrade, the return game, for the most part, was non existent. The kicking game was up and down, more up, than down, but more consistency is needed, McAfee and Adam, are 2 of the leagues best, when they are on their game

next year: more players with return skills will be brought in, in hope to find someone dynamic, more players with athletic ability and coverage experience are always on the list of needs, McAfee is a free agent and Adam is will be 41 and entering year #18, they are not locks to be back, but the odds are better, that they will be,than not.

I am amazed nobody has made a comment on this....I knew I missed one or two :)

My only disagreement is Vaughn and Gordy.  We need an upgrade big time over Vaughn. (if not only to get 'Edge's jersey off of him :))  He was burnt far too many times, and only had 1 solid game IMO.

Gordy is fast as lightning....I just wish he could cover.

Just my observations, not being critical.  I totally agree with the safety situation.  'Zibby' is no better than a 3 safety...ST.

Special teams improved, but still gave up some big plays at the wrong times....blocked punts/kicks can make the difference in a game or two....need to 'lock em up.' :blueshoe:  :blueshoe:  :blueshoe:

Powers ( if he returns) and Davis are quality cb's and both have the potential to be better, I was really impressed with Butler, he may be good enough to start over 1 of those 2, Vaughn would be the 4th cb, I have seen quite a few #1 cornerbacks ( even shutdown corners ) struggle, I think for a 4th cb, he is pretty solid, Gordy is stopgap....................thanks for the input Brent

Vaughn is PFF worst rated free agent CB. # 60 out of 60. Decent??

Powers is 49th. Solid?

JMO but i thought Vaughn was terrible in coverage based on the EYE Test.

Powers has been decent in zone coverage in the past but barely hung in there this season.

They both played such that with FA $$$ to spend, SURELY there are Better players available for this system than BOTH of them. SAD if that isn`t True.

This is NO TIME to hang on to guys that are not good at that jobs.

I have watched alot of football, I have seen guys who are probably in the top 10 on that list, look like marginal players, at times, not claiming to be an expert on personell, just basing it on what I see when I watch games and to take it a step further, not sure who did those lists', but from my experience, about 10% of footballs writers have the slightest clue what they are talking about

ps- I remember a few years back, EVERYONE was blasting Tim Jennings-why is he playing? He's worthless..................wonder if he enjoyed Hawaii, this year

One mans goat....is another man's Clydesdale :)

We tend to slam and slam one guy....just like Lacy....if Vaughn can play like the one All Pro Day he had....I would keep him.  I have seen rumors that Grigson would keep him.  So if I am missing something...been thee done that buddy :)  Good stuff!!
