He has been bottom 1/3  of the league grade wise most of the year, even spent a good chunk of it bottom 10 in the league

    PFF scores by the week:

    Thomas -  43.8(72/79), 50.8(72/79), 44.5(81/85), 48.9(79/87), 47.7(77/86), 49.8(79/86), 57.2(68/84), 55.1(74/87), 54.8(76/87), 59.5(60/86), 58.4(65/88), 59.6(60/88), 58.5(68/91), 59.5(72/94), 57.7(78/97)

I'm just wondering though why now all of a sudden as opposed to waiting all this time. They kept raving about cross and getting him more time. Thought they would have broken him in much sooner then evolved this drastic drop.

They are really not liking what Thomas has been doing. This is crazy.

This I don't really understand. How can you fall off a cliff like that. It's not as if Cross wasn't on the team or Harrison till now. Or has his play dropped off that much in the last few weeks? Strange.

Lewis might finally get that two year extension. He has been so pivotal to the dline depth. He is close up the top in pressures.

I just hope his agent doesn't fill his head with delusions of grandeur. I'd like him back.

That’s the high character thing Ballard likes that some were complaining about Ballard last year for.

Let’s say the Colts didn’t trade back last year and took Pickens like some fans wanted and let’s just say for argument sakes they asked him to do what Pierce has been asked to do and let’s just say it’s all the QB do you think Pickens would behave the way Pierce has?  I doubt it.  Character matters and I am sure that was a big part of why the Colts decided to target Pierce over Pickens last year.

Honestly, if Pickens was told to play the Pierce role, he'd have been suspended at least once this year knowing how Steichen operates. Jmo.

What people are saying when they say, “it’s the QB” is this: the routes that this scheme assigns to other receivers are not the same as those they assign to Alec Pierce.

Pittman and Downs are assigned the kind of routes that Minshew is very good at. Alec Pierce, however, is not assigned these kinds of routes. His role has consistently been to run really fast, far downfield. Minshew has to wind up to uncork throws like that. He’s not gifted with the arm to throw like that naturally. Even with Pittman out, Alec Pierce didn’t take over the intermediate role, Montgomery did.

I love Seniõr Minshew. I really, really like that they went and got him for our team this year. But change the QB to one with a different skill set and you’ll see different opportunities in the Colt’s passing game.

The most amazing thing to me is that Pierce hasn't complained once about the way he's used. Keeps his mouth shut, runs his routes (though it must be discouraging to know you probably won't smell the ball) and block (where he does an outstanding job).

I've said this before, but give him mpj role and see the kind of numbers he puts up (and vice-versa).

I haven't seen this anywhere else, but they said during the game today that Pierce has run 40 more go routes than any other receiver in the NFL.

I heard that as well. In effect he's the sacrificial lamb to allow Minshew to play his game of fairly safe short and intermediate throws. He should be given his props instead of the scorn he gets.

I was going to say there is a huge difference in gambling and peds and beating your girl friend.  That’s not to say peds and gambling are okay but as you pointed out you are just hurting yourself and they are things that hurt the integrity of the league, which is important, but not the same level as a crime.  They can easily fall under sometimes a good person makes a poor decision.

I agree. Violent or deviant behavior (granted that is subjective) is what I have a real problem with. Peds, gambling, getting drunk, smoking weed all fall under the knucklehead category imo. Certainly bad, especially since your hurting your team, but living in the world we do, you have to expect it to happen at times no matter how careful you are picking players.

Ballard has blabbed and blabbed about getting high character guys, horseshoe guys, since he got to Indy and now we can’t go a week without some Colt being in the news. I remember when he said, after a few years, something like “look, y’all know me, I’m looking you in the eye and telling you, and you know I shoot straight, look, our locker room can now handle some questionable characters because the culture is so strong.” Ballard is so full of it it’s funny.

As long as your not one of those fans who criticised him for taking too many nice guys and are now criticizing him because he may not have, then that's fine. My point is the hypocrisy of some fans is absurd and irritating.

The difference is that Ballard prioritized character over talent. So if the players are less talented and have character concerns, that's a bad thing. At least other teams who are taking risks on players with character concerns are normally doing it because the talent ceiling is high. If the talent ceiling is lower and the players still get in trouble, what's the point?

So you think he purposely doesn't take character as seriously now as opposed to a few years ago?

Or is your problem with cb due to the players not having a high enough ceilings to warrant the risk?

How in the world do you connect the dots to Frank?!?

    This is ridiculous.

He's been fired twice and is no longer in football and he's still the whipping boy of many frustrated fans here. Always need someone to hate on.

I remember Ballard (and Reich) were criticized by many for taking character too seriously. "They take too many nice guys." Now that some players have gotten into trouble he's getting blamed for that. Takes too many nice guys...takes too many bad guys. Sad is thing probably a lot of the same fans are blaming him for both.

  11. Q's PFF numbers are puzzling. Of course he used to grade out much higher. Given that, he should be grading out even higher now since he has Raimann and Kelly on either side playing well. So either PFF is using different methods to grade players or someone's been assigned to Q that is crazy critical. The other is that our fondness of him has blinded us a bit and he's playing just like he's graded. Which is good, nothing great. The eye test tells me he playing better than his grade but I admit I'm a huge Q fan.

  12. First time in a long while where he stayed in the pocket with flinching at the sign of pressure (real or not). There were a couple of plays where he reminded me of Andrew. Pocket closing down, but he stood there kept looking down field and found a receiver even with a crowd around him.

  13. Imo, Pierce was no different in his play this game or game 1. The only difference is they threw him the ball. As has been pointed out numerous times, he's been open, but for whatever reason, he's not getting the ball.

As to why he got it this time, I can only assume the coaching staff emphasized it more pointedly or Minshew had some kind of epiphany either in his confidence in his arm or the fact that Pierce can catch the ball.

I feel as though I'm in the minority here. He was a second round pick. I'm not saying he is a bad player but i would like to see more. Much more.

You need to talk to Steichen or Minshaw.

  15. AP is this year's whipping boy. Every year we have to have one right?

The only way you can judge how Pierce is doing is if you watch the coaches feed.  He is open a lot, but Minshew just doesn't have the arm (or confidence to go to him).  Those short crossing routes that Minshaw does throw are usually reserved for Pitt and Downs. If they changed his roll, I have no doubt Pierce would easily put up impressive numbers.  They just don't have the QB to get it to him.
