So he had a cervical fusion... this is a surgery I do frequently.  Once it heals the surgery is more or less the strongest part of the neck.  The biggest problems with a fusion in this context are:

    (1) loss of nerve function prior to surgery may or may not recover after surgery, usually over the next 3-12 months (but his production after surgery implies no major concern on this)

    (2) the patient will have somewhat accelerated wear/arthritis at non fused levels.  While this is a real concern, it will unfortunately be more of an issue for him later in life, after his NFL career.

Peyton had this surgery as his final neck surgery before playing for the broncos, but his problem was number one above, he apparently never had the same arm strength as before.

Ahmad Bradshaw also had this same surgery in 2013, he already had I think 6 years of RB play prior to that.  His YPC held up but was utilized less, but this may mirror more a tapering RB career.

I'm not personally worried about the medical status of this player, but I have no idea the actual details obviously.  I will say that very few surgeons would be eager to clear the player to play afterwards, mostly for the stupid liability things in medicine.

I think it's fair to say we got a really nice pick here for value.

Thanks, and you'd better be a real doctor!

We see many coverage failures by all teams caused by miscommunication.

Certainly there are exceptional individuals that play CB but experience and intelligence are vital.

Flowers had size and 4.3's speed, and Jones was decent. Juju has potential but because of his size and speed he will always be successfully targeted.

We are desperate for a 4.3's stud that can cover anytime, anywhere. That was Rodgers BTW.

BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?

Sacks are not a great measure of how good/disruptive the DL is. If they stay at about the same level they were this year and we make the playoffs, it will likely be not because of the defense that we make the playoffs but despite it.

If the secondary was so bad last year, wouldn't 51 sacks be an even more impressive stat?

How about we have our d-line quit focusing so much at stopping the run and more attacking like it's always a pass play and Steichen orders Gus to disguise his coverages like good defenses do and also we blitz 30% more like average teams do.

Lets get the pressures up to suit our most knowledgeable fans.

Stop the runner on the way to the quarterback. Wasn't that Dungy's philosophy?

Justin Hamilton.  If AR gets hurt again, the DL struggles to get pressure consistently or if Gay misses one kick outside of 48 yards then there's no doubt in my mind that Hamilton will be shown the door... and rightly so.

    Who's Justin Hamilton?

Rhe entire offensive staff is at Texas pro day. Could be looking at their WR which is being rumored to be a first round pick. They had a lot of people interviewing bowers. Maybe Ballard will surprise and go offense. I don’t think Ballard is as worried about corner. I think he is more worried about safety.  Hopefully they can get Blackmon back.

Agreed. I know neither Blackmon or Cross might be a true FS, but I think they still played well together and each has do much athletic ability, I think they could be very successful. Anyway in the Colts D both safeties sort of play both positions.

    Hey, CB!

For discussion sake, the argument against that is that the best position for both Blackmon and Cross is strong safety.   That neither might be a good free safety.

    Just thinking out loud.

Hello NCF! My memory isn't the best but when Cross finally started getting playing time with Blackmon, didn't they do well with both basically playing both FS and SS?

Is the depth we've added better than the depth last year? And young guys having another year doesn't necessarily equate to improving a team. Kind of feel were in the treading water phase

We sign a couple splash players but in order to do so, we weaken other areas by not resigning our good players doesn't improve us imo.

    Yeah you never know.

The difference literally is if you hit those numbers last year or not

So even if an incentive is perceived as NLTBE doesn't mean it actually is. Just how it affects the cap.

    Example

Say last year if Moss had an incentive for 500yds rushing, it would of been NLTBE. He got 749yds, so he would of earned it.

So just to clarify, if the nltbe is reached this season, it doesn't count on this year's cap. But it will be automatically added to next year's cap regardless if the player is still on the team.

    Yes

So like I said it just depends what they are.

If I had to bet, I would get they are pretty unlikely to be hit and since he didn't play that much it will make it much more likely.

I'm sure that went into to train of thought when the incentives were placed on the table.ake sure the incentives qualifies NLTBE.

Thanks. I wonder why a player (or either side) would even bother with NLTBE in a contract. Other than making the contract look more impressive. I guess even an unreachable incentive is worth something.

    There is NLTBE and LTBE

Not likely to be earned vs likely to be earned.

So say for example if Flacco needs 3000yds to hit an incentive. He only had 1600yds last year, so that would be considered NLTBE.

Now if the incentive this year was 1500yds, it would be considered LTBE.

The big difference, NLTBE doesn't count against cap in current season, LTBE does, but if incentives aren't met, the team gets JT credited back the following year.

So the of its ltbe, it would count right now?

    Not bad

$4.5m, unless he has to play substantial time

So how does work though? The guaranteed part only counts against the cap? How do you count the incentive part? It's added to next season?

This won't be popular, but that’s ok.

But I don’t want Sneed at all.  Not any part.

The Colts would have to give up a day 2 pick, plus a contract that would range from 4/70 at the low end to roughly 5/90 at the high end.   For a corner in a mostly zone defense?    Makes no sense to me.

Corners next season:   Brents, Moore, Flowers, Jones,  2024 draft pick, 2024 FA vet signing.

I agree if we play the same style D as last year. But with Sneed, I'm hoping we change up and get more varied especially on the back end. If he's just going to sit in zone most of the time, then he's not worth it.

It's not just that for me. I think the Colts had an opportunity to recalibrate the roster, to reassign cap to more valuable positions, etc. But we're giving more money to a non-pass rush DL (who is now in his 30s, btw), a limited LB, etc. It's like we're leaning into the same roster/cap configuration that has kept us below the top tier teams in the league.

I'd be fine with not signing top tier guys, I never expected that anyway. But would rather have kept the powder dry than continue to pay non premium guys.

We'd still need to replace them though. Do you think we overpaid for Stewart and Franklin?

I think he was at ten million per year before. So a slight raise.

These extensions shouldn’t affect the cap much. Because they are extensions and not new signings.

That's what I thought. Almost the same money per year. Thought he could have gotten more, but I'm not complaining!
