I'm going 34-21 Bengals. Not trying to be a downer, just going by what I saw this team do in the pre-season.

Probably not a bad prediction, but I can't help but to think about how disappointing Cincy is every season, especially on offense. Their roster has been looking stacked for seasons on end, but they seem to fall flat.

Also, for as deep as they seem to be, our bottom roster guys dominated theirs in that last preseason game... I mean, just physically... had it not been for mistakes, that (admittedly meaningless) game would have been a a whistle to whistle blowout.

That isn't to say that I'm super confident that Indy wins this one, just that i'll be surprised if the Bengals score 34, really.

  2. I'm really happy about the (apparent) depth along the OL going into this season... We have so many young, talented guys, that it will be a bit of a let down (for me) if Slauson gets a starting spot.

That being said, I am really impressed that Ballard has gotten us into a position where our fall back options are as good as Slauson and Howard. I would love to see Smith and Clark win the spots on the right side, but, of course, I want to see the best 5 out there every week.

  3. I'm a homer, admittedly, I always look for reasons to be optimistic about the Colts during the off-season, so you can take my opinions with a grain of salt.

That being said, I'm not overly worried about the LB spots this season. Walker was on his way to being the exact dude that our DC has been talking about (fast, instinctual, able to affect the pass) before gaining weight and getting injured. I think it's clear that he realizes this and the team does as well. I expect good things for him.

Leonard looks like that kind of player right out of the box. He was picked near the top of the 2nd round because he's the prototype  LB that Eberflus wants to put on the field and Eberflus knows LBs.

Both 7th rounders really had nice highlight reels (fwiw) and it would be a big boon to the rebuild if either developed into starter material. There are also a couple of intriguing UDFAs where the same principle applies, even decent depth level development would be a very good sign from one or more of these guys.

The other thing (and I know that some here will strongly disagree) is that Morrison simply isn't as awful as many think. It is true that he has been noticeably slow to react at times and has been abused in coverage on occasion, but he can make a serviceable SAM, imo. He is slow, but made all the tackles that were in front of him, ftmp. I know that tackle totals are not an extremely telling stat, but he still made a ton of them. This, while playing in a scheme that gave a player like him too many responsibilities...

Also, he was inexperienced and can still improve. Part of why he looked so slow had to do with indecision, an issue for many young players. His decision making should improve, given all we had previously heard about his football IQ (again fwiw)... add that to the character and leadership qualities that the coaches used to rave about and you have a guy who I will give the benefit of the doubt going into the season (if he makes the roster).

I think it's an interesting group of LBs, at least. I wouldn't expect greatness from this group, but, it will excite me if we can pin down two of those starting spots and a couple backup jobs for the foreseeable future with the players we already have in the fold.

Of course, it doesn't take much to excite me in late May, though.

  4. I wouldn't take him now, for sure.

He has some serious issues.... I won't speculate over whether it might be mental illness, CTE, or drug abuse, but he definitely has an issue that will need to be addressed before a team will/should sign him.

I've read the phrase "basket case" on this forum with regard to many players and potential FA signings. In most cases, I've agreed that the player isn't a good culture/locker room fit. Incognito is the absolute epitome of those sentiments, though.

Regardless of what his actual issues are, no team has been able to help curb them and they have gotten progressively worse. Medical intervention is likely in order at this point. More hits to the head is not what he would appear to need at this stage of his life... not to mention the internal medical issues he has been facing with his liver and kidneys.

I don't think any GM will touch this dude with a 10 ft. pole... Not this season, and probably not ever again.

  5. To clarify my position as has been stated in another thread...

I like the kneeling. I'm a big Ali fan, if that helps...

Despite that, I believe in an organization's right to restrict some behaviors of individuals while at work... I don't disagree with the NFL's new policy, although I'll be a fan of the first player that violates it. The NFL should have the authority to discipline whoever it is.

  6. Not a fan of that idea...  I actually like it when athletes use their celebrity to draw attention to the important issues of our time.

Now, If the NFL wants to take away a draft pick from Houston because of that ridiculous stunt with Mike Pence, I'd be all for it. That was a disgrace.

"Chop-chop" in the way I described isn't "racist" it simply was a term used in a time when folks communicated in ways easily understood between disparate groups from various regions of the world.  In this instance, I may have misunderstood the context Coach was using the words.  I am truly sorry if I offended you.  I'll try not to do it again.

Oh, I definitely wasn't personally offended... I was merely bringing it up conversationally.

It has been pointed out that I was likely wrong in my assumption about the phrase. I was told at some point that it was a term used by the handlers of indentured railroad workers... After looking it up, it seems to be more like how you explained it in your reply.

I've never been personally offended by anything I've read on this forum, although I have vehemently disagreed with some posters on occasion... I just have a passing interest in linguistics, really.

Please don't feel like you'd have to censor yourself on my account... I wasn't trying to imply that you were being offensive in any way, only that it was strange to hear the coach say something that I had been (falsely, apparently) led to believe was racially insensitive...

  8. I'm down for B.B. in this scheme, assuming it's not another 1 year deal (doubt he would sign one, anyway).

If I'm in Ballard's shoes, I wouldn't think twice before giving him 3 years at 8mil. per season... Assuming medical checks out on that foot... The kid can play... My guess is that Desir would be competing with Hairston for the 2018 nickel spot if we signed Breeland.

  9. Cirino looks/sounds like a good fit for the D if he can actually play at an NFL level.

I get that he's a hybrid type, but we really shouldn't be surprised to see Ballard trying to add a capable FS in lieu of Hooker's injury. I don't think the staff knows whether he will miss games or not. He certainly isn't sure himself, judging by his tweet.

I think that adding Boston or Reid might be the best insurance... No need to rush Malik and risk further injury.

I won't fault Ballard, though, if he saves the cap space and goes with a young guy at that spot, especially if Hooker seems to be in line to get back into the lineup before week 4 or so.

Chop-chop...means "do it now" or "right away" -- in Pigeon English.

I thought (could be wrong) that particular phrase had racist connotations when used in the way you have explained...

I only listened to the audio, but was imagining (could be wrong again) that Reich was using it to convey how the receivers should be using their hands, as opposed to the slang...

  11. He's probably finished, but there isn't any risk involved in a one year deal, really... It's not like Andre Johnson because we don't see this team as being a WR away from contention like many of thought about that Colts team.

He'd probably be in his best behavior and doing everything possible to be productive in order to make some dough on that next (and maybe final) deal.

I don't really see the point in bringing in older stop gap players to this team, though, unless it's for veteran leadership, which isn't Dez's strong suit at all. It would be a "no" from me, for that reason.

  12. It'd be nice to get Holton Hill and Skai Moore with the next two picks...

Not to get into the "instant analysis" fray here, but it is nuts to me that so many of us are reacting so strongly to the players that have been drafted to Indy so far... Obviously, none of these have seen the field yet. We all know that NFL GMs are privy to information that we have no way of knowing and their boards reflect that.

If our team of highly paid scouts, NFL lifers, say that one guy is more valuable to the team than another, I am inclined to always give them the benefit of the doubt... at least until the coaches and draftees have had a chance to see what these guys can do...

It's just waaay to early to be getting so heated about it, on either side. I'm not just talking about the forum... the comments on some of the articles are so unnecessarily brutal, imo. This might be the best or worst Colts draft of all time, but none of us know that yet.

  13. Luck is healthy and the young players improve...  Indy doesn't need to make the playoffs this season for it to be encouraging, I'd say.

The real measure, in my eyes, will have to do with coaching... If we have found the staff who can develop talent on both sides of the ball and call plays/make adjustments on Sundays, then I'm a happy camper, regardless of 2018 w/l record.

I'm not expecting 11 wins... Record-wise, I'd be pretty encouraged by 8-8 with the way the schedule looks. We are a very young team that lacks talent atm.

mack is an ok backup, while barkley is one of the best RBs to ever enter the draft

I just can't get on board with that...

Barkely was not the best RB in the NCAA this last season, especially the 2nd half... He had unimpressive (or even downright bad) games against Northwestern, Ohio State, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Maryland...

How can somebody who had so many stinkers in the season before he enters the draft be one of the best to ever enter?

He runs soft, imo, regardless of his size, he just doesn't use it. He can learn, but he doesn't currently have the skill set to be a workhorse back in the NFL as a rookie. He will be a big scat back... like Mack was last season for the Colts. There will be at least 3 or 4 RBs in this draft that will have better rookie years than Saquon will, although I understand that which teams they land on will have as much to do with their success as their own talent.

Mack is going to be better than Barclay this year?  CD you're entitled to your opinion but I think you are in the minority on that one.  Ballard will most likely draft draft a new starting RB this year.  With Gore gone he needs someone who can pass protect and run between the tackles.  That is not Mack IMO.  We shall see.

I'm sure that I am in the minority on that opinion... I think that Mack's learning curve was more significant than Barkley's will be, given the system he came from. I also think that it will take Barkely a season to learn what Mack already knows about the pro game.

Whichever team takes Barkley will feed him more carried than Mack will likely get this season, but I think Mack will be a better player and it will show up on tape. Time will tell... If Indy drafts Barkley, we will get a true comparison... Not that I want that.

I just think Barkley is way overrated and isn't the "generational" RB that is worth a high pick in the 1st. I do realize that it is an unpopular opinion as evidenced by every draft board in all of the media treating him like a top 5 player.

  16. If the Bears are willing to give up a 2nd or 3rd to move up for Barkley, I'd do it instantly... Provided Chubb had already been picked. I'd rather take Edmunds, Smith, Ward, Hurst, or even Landry over Barkely without regret, especially with an extra pick thrown in.

I think year 2 Marlon Mack is going to be better than Barkely this season. They both lose yards because they bounce everything outside... The difference is that Mack has had a year to learn how to play in the NFL. Barkley is going to have growing pains. He won't be a top 10 RB until he learns to run between the tackles... which will take time. Jmo... Not worth a top 15 pick, let alone the 6th pick in the draft.

  17. I'm not on board with picking Barkley, myself, but I would put the odds at 4/1...

25%.... which seems pretty high, but I figure Indy only has 5 options: Chubb, Nelson, Barkely, trade-down...

The reason why it isn't 20%, in my mind, is because I feel Barkely is slightly less likely to be picked, by any of the teams in front of us, than either Chubb or Nelson... He is just slightly more likely to be available, imo.

I will say that I love the idea of trading down to the Bears if they want Barkely, like Aluckiswolverine said. That would be perfect in a scenario where Barkley was the only of the big 3 available at #6.

  18. Seems odd to trade for a RB with so many good ones in the draft plus our suspect OL.

There are players I'd make that trade for, but not any RBs... not if it means passing on a chance to draft Chubb at #6... not that it looks like a great chance, atm. Just my opinion, though... I do think both of the RBs mentioned are great players.

  19. Smith is a an absolute stud. Easily the best LB in this class, imo.

The size thing is no issue to me... Compare his tape to Edmunds' and you'll see that Smith has significantly more "pop" behind his pads when tackling, despite the weight differential. I think this is due to his exceptional ability to diagnose plays and be in the correct spot to make the stop. He always looks to be in position, whereas as Edmunds uses his long arms to grab offensive players from a position of weaker leverage.

Smith can stop and turn on a dime... He is so so good at reacting to a ball carrier's cut and making a strong tackle where lesser LBs would have been juked out of their shoes. It is a special quality and very rare.

I like Edmunds in the sense that he could eventually drop down to add another pass rusher on obvious passing downs, making him a true 3 down player, but I think the hype train has gone off the tracks if people think he's worthy of a top 10 pick with his obviously raw tape... Even Edmunds' highlight reel shows areas where he needs to improve. He's only 19, which means that he will probably be able to fix a lot of his issues, but it is speculation, at this point, to say that he will ever be as good as Smith is right now.

    This won't be popular....

But I think Ballard would like another 4-for-1 draft just as he did with the Jets.

So....     in theory....     I think Ballard would be willing to accept Buffalo's first pick 12 and their first pick in the 3rd round, pick 65 at the top of the round.       And we'd say to the Bills that because we're letting them keep their other first round pick (22) and both of their 2's (I think they're in the 50's)   that what we ALSO WANT is their FIRST round pick next year AND their THIRD round pick in 2019 as well.

That would give us this year...   12, 36, 37, 49, 65 and 67....     in the first two days....

    PLUS...

Next year.....   Buffalo's 1st (top-10?) Colts first,  Jet's 2nd (top 10 in 2nd round) the Colts second,  Buffalo's 3rd (top 10 in that round)  and the Colts third.      Two picks in each of the top three rounds.    Six in total in the first two days.

In a perfect world,  this is what I think Ballard would love to get....    now, whether that's true,  and whether Buffalo would be willing to do this is another story....      and we won't know until we're on the clock with pick 6.....

I don't hate that trade at all... I'm all for thinking about this thing in terms of two drafts as opposed to loading up on picks this season.

My nitpick would be that I don't think Buffalo picks in the top 10 next season. I think that they have a decent roster and that even a rookie QB would give them as much as Taylor/Peterman (or whatever his name was) gave them last season. I would be more interested in Arizona's 2019 picks or Miami's if either were in play, although, admittedly, I could be way off when all is said and done...

I will say with some degree of certainty that the 2019 2nd rounder we got from the Jets will be in the top 10 (probably top 5) of that round.

  21. 1 hour ago, NewColtsFan said:

I think it's a waste to even ask for that.

Because I think one or both of the Giants at 2 or the Browns at 4 would take that offer,  allowing Buffalo to leap way over the Colts to most any QB they'd want.

We have to ask enough to make it worth while for the Colts ---- but not so much that that the offer is too expensive and Buffalo shops that to a higher team in the draft order.

    It gets a little tricky....

I don't really see an issue... If Buffalo shops the offer and it gets accepted by NYG or the Browns, it guarantees that another QB comes off the board in the top 5 and Indy gets one of the "blue chip" prospects...

Of course, some might argue that a trade down is better than drafting one or all of the three. I can't fault that logic, really.

I don't think Chubb is as good as Garrett was or that Barkley is as good as Gurley was or that choosing Nelson at #6 is that much better value than getting Wynn or Hernandez in the 2nd, but nobody is lining up to pay me to make those decisions.

My best guess is that Ballard has run through all of the scenarios and has much more accurate grades on these prospects than any of the pundits. I'm going to try to remind myself of this after each day of the draft when my favorite prospects all go to different teams and we draft guys I've never heard of.
