At safety, it seems like we are ok, but not great. I think a lot of us had high hopes for Cross, Blackmon, etc., but it seems like we still need help there.

Maybe we need help there, but Blackmon has looked like a stud to me this season.

I think there's the general idea of Jerry Jeudy, and then there's the real Jerry Jeudy. And those are different things. He definitely has some ability, especially as a route runner, but his production and impact are spotty, at best. And his attitude/effort aren't highly spoken of.

More big picture, I am working through some cognitive dissonance about the WR position lately. I love the technically sound WR who runs great routes, basically the Reggie Wayne model. At his very best, I think that's what Jeudy would be. I would generally rather have Terry McLaurin than DK Metcalf, for example.

But in the current NFL, which is mostly zone defense, the impact of a great route runner has probably been diminished. The scheme and QB are doing the work to beat the defense. Maybe a technician is better at beating press coverage, but with motion and shifts, the scheme can beat press.

It seems like the necessary traits at WR these days are speed, hands, and physicality to finish through contact. If a guy can produce YAC, that's a bonus, and maybe that's an overlapping trait for a good route runner, but not necessarily.

So I'm thinking the things that the best version of Jeudy is supposed to have going for him aren't even a big value add in a modern offense. This theory of mine is still a work in progress, I'm not married to it, but I've been going over it for a while now.

I'm not protesting the Colts potentially making this trade, but like I said earlier, I don't think he's the right guy for our team. And I think a guy like Pierce has greater potential in the current environment, but that requires that we use him more, and that he's more consistent when he gets opportunities.

If it's a late Day 3 pick, I'm fine. But he's guaranteed $13m next year, so that's still kind of a tough sell.

This is an A+ reply. Pretty sure that I agree completely... Thanks for the perspective.

  3. Jeudy is hypothetically the type of receiver we need here. He's a deep threat who also runs good routes. I hate that he appears to slack on any routes where he isn't a top 2 option and he doesn't block anybody, though.

Not really a shoe guy, but maybe a change of scenery is what he needs... shouldn't cost more than a 4th and probably less than that... He's owed more $$ next season than he's earned, imo. Tough call, really, but not a franchise crippling scenario by any means, regardless of how well he'd play.

  4. If Woods can get healthy (and get his head right?) he has unlimited potential.

Right now, I'm loving what I'm seeing out of Ogletree as a receiver. Mo and Granson are inconsistent in that department.

We do still need a Jack Doyle type... a plus blocker with reliable hands in the short game... that type of guy can help a young QB so much.

I haven't really thought about it but how long has woods been out? I know hamstrings can be a pain in the butt, I strained mine in November and it didn't feel right until April. They may put him on IR to start the season.

He's been out since the end of May... missed all of training camp.

And then there is the athletic and speedy Mallory. We got a bunch of them!

Now I've been reading that Woods' hamstring injury is actually severe, so I was completely wrong.

I do like what Mallory has been doing all off-season.

Jelani Woods has to get healthy and on the field as Granson is taking his job

I tend to think that Woods is a bigger part of the offensive plan this season because of how they are treating this hamstring issue, but I could be wrong. Ogletree is intriguing and Granson seems to have great chemistry with Richardson, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

This is a constant thing with him like if there is any contact and it’s not a jump ball he won’t make the catch. He plays very weak and if it’s not a clean release on a vertical defender just maul him

I agree, but it's just strange because he is so physical at the catch point... I honestly think that's he is thinking too much and just needs more practice/reps. I hope, anyway. Reggie to the rescue.

On a side note, with how often Richardson misses high, I really wish he could get some time in with J. Woods... hard to miss that dude high.

  9. The public portion of this is just dumb. Irsay should've kept quiet as well as the agent. Nothing either of them will say in public has any bearing on the actual negotiations.

Everybody is entitled to their view, but JT and his agent's remarks aren't going to change the RB market or the Colts' plans.

The market is what it is, not because of discrimination or anything of the sort... The RB market is low because they don't last and the position is less important (with regard to winning) than it ever has been. You can get 85% of an elite RB's production with a guy off the street or a cheap committee, saving money for more valuable positions. You can draft a perfectly capable replacement in the 3rd round.

I don't fault JT for being disgruntled. He's in a precarious position.I think he's a top 5 RB. I just think that the social media posturing and complaining is pointless. He's not going to guilt the Colts or any other team into paying him more. As a RB, there is a significant chance that he is on the decline or done completely by the time Indy is ready to compete with Richardson, anyway. JMO, though.

Look out for Walker to be a sleeper good player.  Think he is going to be a stud.

    Perfect fit, like Brown.

I completely agree. For Mathurin and Walker to get to start their careers with Ty and (new and improved) Carlisle is a massive boost for their early development. Rick may still be a little stingy with the minutes, but these guys are learning how to play the game the way a small market team needs to play.

The pre draft hits on Walker were that his ceiling wasn't as high as some other forwards in the draft and that he plays a bit soft on the offensive side, shooting a lot of floaters. I think that floater issue is overblown and the ceiling talk is nonsense.

Walker has an underrated BBIQ and is a very good playmaker. He's a perfect fit for this roster, imo. His offense is much better than was talked about pre draft, but he was asked to play a specific role on a contending NCAA team. He shot a lot of floaters because he made a lot of floaters. His HS tape shows that he can be both a facilitator and an inside scorer with an impressive handle, for a bruiser.

I think he's the 4th best prospect from this last draft and could easily end up being the 3rd best NBA player in a draft with 2 surefire All NBA talents in front of him.

  11. I think that it's possible... Honestly, my biggest worry (outside of RG) is Nelson. Does he get back to form this season after 2 rough ones?

RK is probably due to bounce back. He's dealt with a lot of personal stuff, but I think he will look better this year.

If Nelson looks like Nelson and we get the kind of OT play that this dude is expecting, we might be top 10, after all, but I think it's probably the best case scenario.

Im pretty sure once hes extended, the option is gone

I might be misunderstanding, but i don't see why it would be important. Of course the option disappears when the new contract is signed, but what advantage does the label of being in an option year have over an extension?

If you are saying that it is unwise to give him the extension early because the option will be cheaper, then i guess i understand... but it is no guarantee that it will be cheaper because you may be able to get a better deal with an extension this offseason compared to next... also, failing to extend him could mean he tests the market and ends up on another team.

I don't know how much his fifth year option is worth, but it is probably pretty pricey when you consider his position... maybe it is still cheaper than he's worth, but it isn't the same as having an option on a QB, who, if he plays well could save you 15 mil or more on an option for that fifth season.

I saw this, but I dont know how true it is. AC and Moore make sense, but why work on an extension with kelly when we have a fifth year option and Sanchez for two more years

I can't vouch for the truth of the report, but i will say that players get extended right before or during that option year a lot. I am pretty sure Luck signed his deal right after we picked up his option... Grigson just adjusted the numbers so that he basically got paid more in that (technically) first year of the deal to compensate for the lower amount he was owed from the fifth year of the rookie deal.

  14. i dunno if O or D is a bigger need, but I do know that the offense would run more smoothly with a legit #2 receiver. However, that is probably the only clear cut need on that side of the ball, depending on whether or not we re-sign Glowinski.

On D, we need a stud DE, despite the fact that they are next to impossible to find at #26 and in FA. There could he other needs on Defense if we choose not to re-sign players like Desir or Woods. I'd like to see a rangy stud Will get signed and move Walker to SAM.... giving us a beastly rotation at LB and improving coverage on those dinks and dunks. I guess this post proves that I am leaning toward Defense as a bigger need.

We could use depth all over, on both sides of the ball, though. Also, in general, I believe that a top 10 offense is more important than a top 10 defense w/ regard to winning in today's NFL.

  15. I'd be thrilled for Indy to sneak into the playoffs. It would be icing the cake in a really encouraging season.

I'll keep rooting for the Jets to lose and give us a high 2nd rounder, but that's as far as my draft thoughts ever go when the Colts are still mathematically viable.

I know its still early to make any real judgements, but all signs point to Reich being a perfect fit with #12. I still expect improvement this season, not to mention next year.

Playoffs or no, it feels like the precipice of something truly special here. I don't mind saying it (despite the fact that I'm 100% sure that I said the exact same thing in year 1 of the Grigson/Pagano era). Irsay might get his "multiple Lombardi(s)" yet. Might as well work on #1 this year while its still a possibility.

  16. Sounds promising... If he has juice as a rookie, I think that he and Sheard can make a very dynamic 3rd down duo.

Nobody (outside of the QB) will consistently affect game outcomes as often as a stud pass rusher. If Turay can become a consistent double-digit sack type of player, I can see how that can go a long way toward "making" Ballard as a GM. He would, obviously, have to have a couple more good bounces as well.

I'd love to see Basham make a jump this season, too, despite his relatively poor rookie season and off-season.
