Well when free agency 2025 rolls around then we can have that discussion. Lets say for example a guy like Hunter, who the Colts wanted this , was a free agent next year.   Would you rather have  Kwitty at 13 million in his 5th year or had the 13 mill plus another few million to sign say a rush end like Hunter in 2025? To me its not about picking up the fifth becaue you have the money. Its can we use that money in the future to use towards a more impactful player

Hunter had the opportunity to come here this year for more money than Houston offered.  He still chose Houston because that's where he's from.  Maybe try again?

Nope. They are playing the long game and being patient. He will eventually start based on his ability and Mannings will not get involved. They will let it take its natural course and he is most likely to talented to sit for more than 2 years.

I asked 2 questions.  Was your response nope that the Mannings don't get to decide when Arch becomes the starter?  Or, nope the coaches at Texas don't have say in it?

Mannings are playing the long game. When he is ready, he will start. These qbs are coming out to fast and not enough playing time in college.  He will probably play 4 years of college and be the number 1 pick when he comes out.

Wait, so the Mannings get to decide when Arch becomes the starter?  Don't the coaches at Texas have some say in that too?

I would love to see Latu wear 83 Ted Hendricks old number but Mallory has that.  He physically reminds me of Hendricks.  An ER wearing 15?  Doesn’t look right.  Lol

Well an ER wearing 83 wouldn't look right either :P lol.  I'm with you though, I still haven't adjusted to the new rules.

Kiper liked our players but lowered the grade because we failed to address CB in the early rounds. I would think he should be basing his ratings on the players selected. Pretty silly to say that Houston with no 1st round pick had a better draft than the Colts.

I stopped paying attention to Kiper a long time ago.  I got tired of hearing him talk about BPA one minute then turning around and knocking a team's draft pick because it didn't fill a need.

I had Sunday school flashbacks as soon as I read Donnies first name.  It tickled Mr so I had to share lol

Also, the OCD in me is kinda insisting we remove "just" from your line so the syllables will be right. Otherwise a perfect finale :)

I was thinking that Cato June was that type of hybrid S/LB, if I remember correctly.

Yeah,  June was a CB who converted to safety who then converted to LB.  He was one one of dungy's extreme examples of wanting "small but fast" players.  One of many actually lol

I am always an advocate for balance with leaning toward the team building concept of filling needs.  All things being reasonably close to equal, I would then opt for need 10/10 times.  This case, though, certainly sounds like BPA far out weighed need.  I have no problem with the pick.

Its also possible the colts dont see cb as big of a need as some of the fans and media think it is

The Colts did wait a pretty long time before sending the pick to the podium.

thank you for confirming that.  I was playing Destiny 2 and watching (more listening) to the macafee podcast from my phone so, though it seemed like it took a while for them to get the pick in, I couldn't be totally sure. :)

I'm back and forth on whether they tried to trade out. I'm sure they would have considered a great offer that didn't require moving down more than 4-5 spots, but the only team that traded up was the Vikings, and they were all the way down at #23.

But the fact that they could take their highest rated defender at #15 -- and this is the one situation where you know this isn't bogus GM speak, because he was literally the first defender off the board -- is probably exciting. They really lucked out, IMO.

Here's the reason I think Ballard tried to trade back...I was watching the Pat Macafee live podcast coverage of the draft.  From what I saw, though I was also playing a game at the time and had the podcast playing on my phone, it seemed as though the Colts took quite a bit of time before handing in the selection.

They wound up selecting the first defensive player and, according to ballard, one of their handful of players with an elite grade and the top defensive player on their board.

All of that combined, to me, means he probably wanted to trade back but not very far.  I don't think he'd have even considered trading out of the first round like I saw a few people suggest.  I think it'd have been no more than 3-5 spots back where he could have still gotten one of their "elite players".  That's assuming of course that Latu wasn't the last remaining elite player left on their board.  However, if he were the last I'd think they'd have gotten their selection in much quicker.

Despite informing all potential draftees not to hug the commissioner he grabs him and lifts his off his feet hanging him in midair. Then when asked about it he laughingly said "just showing him my love". I hope he follows the instructions for the titans as well. What a clown.

I guess Bowers could have been the trade-up target for the Colts also, I just assume it was a WR, and Odunze is the one that was in range.

this is obviously just speculation on my part, but I think Odunze and Bowers were the most likely trades that Ballard tried to make.  Moving up higher than 9 would have been really expensive.

I also think he tried to trade down a few picks but didn't get a deal he liked so went ahead and made the pick.

Ballard gonna trade up for Marvin eh?? lol. No, what he’s going to do is trade back to pick 32-40 and get a mediocre WR.

well you sure nailed that one

I just feel like he was not at a position of dire need, as compared to CB.

people (before draft pick): Never draft for need!

same people (after draft pick): Why'd they draft him?  That's not a need!

They’re saying he’s one injury away from being out of the NFL. Are you kidding me?

    Who exactly is saying that?

I haven't paid much attention to the draft and looking OR making mocks 'cause with Ballard you usually will be disappointed...... like most on this Forum are tonight. Lol

I’m concerned that they never even talked to this guy. Makes me wonder just how thorough they were on his medical

I'd be far more concerned if they hadn't talked to his doctors.  But Ballard himself said they had a ton of questions for his doctors.  And did they really need to have extensive conversations with him about his health since he played 2 years after having the surgery?

    4 hours ago, austriancolt said:

On Grigson we....oh wait... on Ballard we trust! Trade down on select one of the two premium CB and get an additional selection. With injury concerns we will see Latu go down with a season ending injury within the first five games. Bet on it we have that kind of luck. Also Ballards track record on Edge players is lousy.

All of the doctors that have spoken, you know...the guys who are educated on this and do it for a living, have all said there are no injury concerns.  The only ones that seem to be concerned about his "injury history" are those that seemingly refuse to believe what those doctors are saying.

It seems this injury is mostly about a) if there was and how much nerve damage there was and b) if a patient will recover and how long it'll take to recover. Latu has two years of top college production after the injury. I feel like it's pretty clear there wasn't any nerve damage or he's completely recovered from it.

We had nsurg on here saying after the procedure the damaged part of the neck will be the strongest after the fusion.

The same thing was also said about Manning after he had the surgery.  Yes, Manning had nerve issues in his shoulder after the surgery, but I don't recall him ever having issues with the neck again.  Still, some fans kept saying the same "he's one play away from retirement" that we're seeing now.

People keep underestimating how Indianapolis keep being in the bottom part of the league in terms of a free agency location. Especially in this "self (digital) promotion" age of the players as well

I believe we offered more money to Hunter than anyone else and he choose to play elsewhere

Yeah, Hunter himself pretty much said as much.  But it didn't sound like it was about him not wanting to play in Indy as it was about him wanting to play in Houston, which is where he's from.
