  1. Re-sign

    Castonzo LT

    Sign

    Jadeveon Clowney DE 3-4 years

    Shelby Harris DT 3 years

Philip Rivers QB- 1 year deal (maybe 2)- I should make a disclaimer that this is a win-now cap luxury choice. If we can't afford it, then he's actually the top person on this list I'd pass on. But I think he had a couple years in the tank and is an upgrade over Brissett.

Sammy Watkins- WR- 1-2 years I think he gets cut by the Cheifs and I think Funchess moves on.

    Draft

    1. Jordan Love- QB- I had been harsh on Love in more recent weeks, but looking back more at some of his footage, there is just so much there to be optimistic about and his 2018 season proves he can take better care of the football. He needs to sit and having Rivers, Reich, and Siriani can do him wonders.

2a. Josh Jones- OT- As far as value goes here, one of the few remaining chances to groom an OT from this draft to replace AC. Could possibly have us kick Smith inside while he works the RT position.

    2b. Denzel Mims- WR

    3. Troy Pride Jr.- CB - A position that could use improvement and definitely needs more depth. He can still develop, but he had a good Senior Bowl week.

    4. Harrison Bryant- TE- One my favorite TEs in the draft and he is still regularly projected fairly late. Dude just seems like he could be that monster TE we are lacking. I also would take Trautman if he is here.

    5. Benito Jones- DT- I'm thinking he'd be more developed to be a 1T for us. His plus is that for a guy being projected this late he is a good run stopper who shows promise in the pass rush.

    All remaining picks BPA.

So what does all this do?

‐ Helps us win more now, but also for the future.

-I can live with not getting Brown or Kinlaw if we get Clowney, Harris, and Love.

-the WR changes give us a nice variety of speed options and shiny new 6-3 WR who has speed on the outside and can also do the dirty work on the inside. I'm really high on Mims right now. Can't wait for the combine.

-Not a lot to address the secondary here other than I think Pride is destined for a starting role possibly even in year one. Him, Moore, Rock, and Desir gives me a lot of reassurance. Most pundits agree this draft is deepest in WR and DB and we might be foolish if we don't try to take advantage of that.

-We'd have a much more well-round roster with some real difference makers all around.

    - criticizing my own works, I'd say my biggest concern in this is that CB as shown no inclination to ever be a big spender in FA. But I will say that he has said he would for the right guys, who can stick around. And I wouldn't be unhappy with this draft even if we had to pass on Rivers. I could live with Jacoby and Love.

I don't think that Love falling out of the first round is all that unreasonable. People on this board have an insanely inflated value of all QBs just because we don't want to be stuck with Brissett again and want a shiny new toy to watch on the field. Love is a fringe first round caliber player, but forum members projecting him at 13 all of the time has really made everyone assume that he is an early round 1 player.

Agreed 100 percent and that's exactly why in professional mocks I more often than not am seeing Love get passed on by the Colts. And when did that start? After the Senior Bowl where he showed some good, but also some of the same bad he showed on tape. The combine and his pro day could help his draft stock, but I think pundits are starting to wise up to hype behind Love. His issues last season are no small thing, and I can care less if the dude knows he needs to play smarter. Saying and doing are different things. Everyone understands his upside, it's really a question of how much we are willing to overlook the negatives, or maybe we think there is a good reason for the regression. Personally I watched the highlights of all his interceptions this past season and yikes... I would rather get more of a sure thing at 13, but the kid does have some great arm talent. And he did seem to make better decisions last season, so who knows how he'll turn out. I don't know if I'm a fan of the risk, though.

  3. Yeah, gotta go with what is sure to be the majority here. We don't even have a franchise QB AND have enough positions to upgrade I don't think we should be losing picks early unless it's for a QB. If Brown and Kinlaw are gone there are still DTs that can help and we can still get a top OT, pass rusher or blue chip WR at 13. The 13th pick ought to be a difference maker pick whether we go for DT or not. Most of us seem to want a DT due to wanting to have dominance in the trenches. But we also know a replacement for Castanso and our WR2 (future wr1) is also very important. So why take picks away?

  4. Yeah, other than Herbert I don't like any of the other QBs enough to take them at 13, so I'm starting to feel I'll be in the camp that would like to see someone like Bridgewater, Rivers, or Carr in a Colts uniform next season. Then we can draft a QB in the second round or later or continue to develop Kelly if we think he can be the guy one day. It's not really my "ideal" offseason persay, but I think it's my top choice right now. I don't want Love at 13 and Herbert will probably be gone.

I just think we have enough holes that we can still get better this season and not have our franchise QB in place. I'm not talking about waiting for one to magically show up, I just don't think he's going to be sitting there available at 13 this year. I'd love to be wrong, though. I have no idea what Ballard and Co. are thinking, but as a fan, going for a QB in FA and adding some talent to the roster would keep me content with the team for another season.

I think the Lions will trade back at least once.  If we sit at 13 the top 3 if not top 4 QBs will be gone.  Too many other trades could happen in the top 10.

Agreed. There are hot seats in Detriot and I don't see how any one of these top players will turn things around. If Washington stays pat at No.2 I expect Miami or someone else to come offering some capital and I think the Lions will be inclined to take the best offer.

Seriously? This guy said nothing of any interest here as he covered every possible base with the Colts "potential" QB situation. Him naming Rivers is nothing more than him saying the Colts will probably take a veteran QB. So he says Colts keep JB, Colts might draft or will draft a QB, Colts will sign Rivers(Vet QB), and Kelly might get a shot. Ha!! This is so comical and literally nothing here from Lombardi. Every single out or in has been covered which really means I have no idea what the Colts will do, but if they do something I have addressed it here. Nothing to see here.

He's breaking down the QB situation, not making any final predictions or anything. Not sure what's wrong with that.

  7. I was at the Colts/Chiefs playoff game we won, so I'm biased, but the Superman dive over the goal line after Brown/Ballard(?) fumbled was magic. It didn't even give us the lead, but it was the one where you knew nothing was going to stop us and we were going to win. As a side note. I was so dang proud to be a Colts fan that day. That crowd did NOT give up. They were loud and supportive all game.

  8. I just take it a face value. Which is that he isn't saying he wants Taylor or the othe 3rd stringer to start next season, but that he likes them moving forward. I don't think it's going to prevent them from getting another QB. As far is it being smokescreen? Maybe, but I'm not sure to what end. Hoping teams won't try and trade past them if they choose to stay put? For now I think he's using it more as an explanation for why the Chargers can move on from rivers. More mobility, and he thinks they can win games.

If Ballard makes a few key defensive acquisitions in free agency, I can definitely see that. It still does not mean we don't draft a QB to develop. It is just that Chad Kelly and Brian Hoyer can be bid goodbye with Brissett serving as a solid back up that moving forward, plays the Brian Hoyer role after enough years in the Reich offense.

It will be a 2 year band aid at best, IMO, but it does come with the down side of Rivers' play going south further if last year was an indication of serious decline and lack of development of a new QB that we draft in year 1 with Brissett still around. Too many cooks in the kitchen, there are only so many reps to go around. I am not sure how much Rivers or Brissett would want to help the new QB, like Alex Smith helped Mahomes.

I don't really know if he even looked like he declined. He's had both better and worse seasons. He also had one of the worst o-lines in the league last year had a better completion percentage average than Brissett.

Rivers connection to Reach and Siranni are hard to get past.  They are definitely there.  He is purely a pocket passer but with our OL line it could work out quite well for him.  This would allow Ballard to get a stud player at 13 or move back a little like he usually does.  I think other FA's would like the idea of signing with the Colts if Rivers was there versus JB or a rookie starter. They could draft a QB later and let that pick fight it out with Kelly.  I can see this happening.

Agreed. I really do think we make since. Brissett isn't a starter and we don't look to be able to draft a QB who can start right away. So it'd be nice to get a veteran and still draft someone. With our o-line Rivers could have a couple more good to decent year in him while we develop someone. I just don't see any QB outside of the top 3 in the draft that could start right away.

I am a big fan of letting Kelly take the reigns over and not drafting a QB in the first couple rounds. Take one later to groom in parallel with CK just in case the head falls back into young and stupid Kelly. Going this route allows you to get a guy later with some upside and if Kelly works out and we also develop the second guy, we have trade material a few years in.

who Kelly reminds anyone is irrelevant imho because they all get put in different schemes, coaches and players around them. Troy Aikman in his prime would be a failure if he was behind the olines we trotted out 2012-2017 but he sure was a heck of a college talent.

I don’t look at Kelly as being a HOF guy we aren’t playing, however, I don’t think any of the guys coming out this year are either. I surmise that Chad Kelly has every bit of the skill sets that any of these guys we are looking at in round 1 this year. Why would we spend high draft capital on one when we have a guy who matches up equally as well with all of these kids potential and he is already on the team and understands the system well. CK May fail, but so may Love, Eason, Herbert, and Tua. I think it’s higher % that we go with Kelly than taking risk on a guy at 13 who could possibly flop. Losing out on that pick sets you back 3-5 years. Missing on CK sets you back one as you go after the next years QB class.

Seriously, though, I have no idea what I really want us to do this offseason. I see a lot of passionate options and I'm over here like, "I think most of these could work."

You'll lose faith In Ballard? He has a very tall order thus off season. I wouldnt say theres any GM in the league that could turn this around in one off season after losing an elite QB.

This. Thank you. If that were people's expectations I don't see how they don't lose faith in Ballard then. Great QBs don't grow on trees. Let alone finding one and nailing every pick that addresses our other major needs. I think we can have an awesome offseason, but if people are expecting Ballard to make us deep playoff contenders in one season they may be disappointed. A lot of luck would be needed for things to go that way.

But we can improve this offseason. I'm upset with Ballard only if with our 9 pick and large cap space he botches giving us a better future. Next season and beyond. We can't take forever to improve; contracts expire, cap runs out. But we just lost our franchise QB. We've not had one offseason without him in our plans. Temper your expectations. Plenty of great teams took years to develop, none of those teams had their QB surprisingly retire in the middle of a rebuild. We're just now figuring out what to do now. That's a tall, tall order for CB and FR.

  13. Not a fan of Gibson there, and would probably rather do an OT at 34 rather than YGM.  I am also not sold on Love, but as a "mock" it would be fair to assume the coaches love him.  The free agency is what I love most here. Outside of Chris Jones, Byron Jones is probably top choice. He would have familiarity with Eberflus and while I know we have made some investments in CB recently, it's not showing clear dividends and it would be nice to not have to worry about this group as much, especially if injuries set in. Our pass defences was an issue last year and it's not just because our pass rush or D-line. We could use an upgrade and Jones is an above average option who has shown flashes he can be even greater than good. Great mock, it's my favorite of the year so far. Fixes our top areas nicely, like I said I would just love to see OT depth/development get addressed.

I just don't think it will happen.  Why would he want to come here when he could potentially play for another title?  He's got the best QB in the league, likely the next Brady.  They are going to contend for the next decade with Mahomes.  He is still going to make a lot of money in KC.  I just don't see him leaving.  But I would welcome him with open arms even if we got Kinlaw (or Brown) in the draft.

I think the fact that he now has a ring might actually help against your point. Now he makes sure he gets paid. He can still go somewhere that wants to win, but now gets to make big-time money. But kind of to reiterate what you said, it really depends on KCs offer and their plans with him in general. I'm 65-35 leaning towards him staying in KC, but I'd love to have him. And the other Jones too!

  15. I wouldn't be surprised if we have to go to 3. Lions have some hot seats and I really see them trading back to get more picks, still get a major talent. So 4 may not be good enough to get who we want. I imagine a future 1st rounder will be on the table but I could see the Dolphins using their wealth of picks to move up just to ensure they get who they want.
