Everybody learns from a combination of experience, studying (sitting), and observing others. Think of how education works and the training for almost any complicated job.

Of course, the solution would be to move Smith to RG, French to C, and have Freeland start at RT when he is good enough.  Hopefully he will not be a liability as a starting RT in a few months.  Then, draft another mid round OT as the backup/developmental swing tackle.  Since we got lucky with getting an immediate starting caliber LT with a 3rd round pick, it allows Ballard to direct first round capital for a receiver this draft.

If we're not stubborn about letting Freeland develop into that RT, then we don't have to waste a high round pick on an olineman when our skilled positions are still average/below average.

One of the goals under Steichen, though may be to make the O-line less expensive with younger players and use those resources to make our skill positions more dynamic.

  3. Interesting take on Bryce Young's situation:

    Quote

Frank Reich’s playcalling is killing Bryce Young

One of the biggest selling points for Reich as head coach of the Panthers was his history with quarterbacks. That resume really can’t be downplayed. He managed to elevate Peyton Manning’s game in Indianapolis as a quarterbacks coach, did the same for Philip Rivers in San Diego, and managed to turn Carson Wentz into a monster during his time in Philadelphia.

It’s abundantly clear what the core issue is: Reich is trying to mitigate the lack of receiving talent, while also wanting to maintain control over the offensive decision making. It would be a good plan for most quarterbacks, but painfully fails to understand who Bryce Young is as a player — which is remarkable considering this was the team who scouted him and fell in love with him to the point of trading away the future for him.

The article goes on to describe Young's success when infrequently given the flexibility to create plays, but how Reich has stifled those opportunities.

Pickett most likely either had a supremely mild concussion, or never had a concussion to begin with.

We are witnessing a massive overcorrection by the league in regard to handling concussions due to the negative press and lawsuits.  It's not a bad thing, at all.  It's just a much more severe correction than we would have seen in any other circumstances

CTE among NFL players is a huge problem for the league, the players, and their families. IMHO, this may not be an adequate solution, but it's not an overcorrection.

  5. What I've seen: The Colts are succeeding in modernizing their offense under Steichen and need to continue to do so by upgrading their wide receivers to be championship calibre. Richardson can get the job done if he can stay healthy and keeps improving. The coaching and QB changes have made a huge difference.

On defense, the Colts aren't bad but they still need to modernize their approach to personnel and perhaps scheme to emphasize defending the passing game.

I'm glad we never gave up on Reggie Wayne this soon...

And what if we'd given up this soon on Parris Campbell, Dezmon Patmon, Mike Stratchan, Daurice Fountain and Deon Cain?

I'm kidding but I don't think that sticking with Pittman and Pierce as a starting combo in the seasons ahead will be good enough.

And he's making more than Taylor !!!

    Taylor when he found out

Angry Season 3 GIF by SuccessionHBO

The NFL's highest paid long snapper and highest paid free kicker ever, now both making more than Taylor.

That doesn't concern me too much, but I'd much rather have wide receivers and cornerbacks worthy of being paid among the highest at their positions.

It's great that Sills' baseless charges were dropped and he's free to play in the NFL. Good for him.

He was acquitted, which is certainly good for him, but I don't know how anybody can know the charges were baseless. Rape can be hard to prove. The accusations were made the day after the alleged incident in college, not later after Sills had money as a pro player.

I'm not saying he's guilty. I'm saying it's hard to know for certain what happened. Viking - I know you weren't the poster to initially assert these were baseless charges - I'm not trying to criticize or disagree with you.

From coverage of the trial: "The woman was allegedly strangled and bitten, leaving marks.

They are identifying the victim only by the initials M.M.

Tuesday, her cousin, who spent that evening with her, took the stand for the prosecution.

Breanna Woods testified that a group of friends had been out to several bars, and at one point, Josh Sills met up with them. They knew him from high school.

That night, Woods said Sills bought them shots of whisky, and they became, quote, “even tipsyer.”

Later, Woods said Sills offered to drive them home, and they got in his truck.

She said Sills was squeezing M.M.’s leg on the way home, and it was awkward.

When they arrived at Breanna Woods’ house–where M.M. was staying–Breanna got out and M.M. said, quote, “I’ll be in in a minute.” Woods said she went in and went to sleep.

When she awoke, it was daylight and she said M.M. was there, quote…”upset and shook up.”

M.M. was taken to the hospital.

The prosecution says Sills restrained M.M., wouldn’t let her out of the truck, repeatedly pushing her head down, forcing her to perform oral sex.

The defense says it was consensual sex, not rape.

The deputy who answered the call at the hospital said M.M. had a mark on her leg, and was, quote, “crying and sad.”"

"Brooke Bing took the stand Wednesday in Guernsey County. She testified about the night where her, the victim, and Sills were together and Sills allegedly had forced the victim to perform a sex act on him in his truck. The three were a part of a group that went out for night of drinking back in December 2019.

Sills, a former WVU Mountaineer football player, and current NFL player for the Philadelphia Eagles, is accused of preventing the victim from leaving his truck and forcing her to perform oral sex.

Bing said when they arrived at a friend’s house after going out that night and her and the victim were in a room, the victim was “distraught” and “upset.”

“She looked like a wreck and I was trying to calm her down,” Bing said Wednesday during her testimony.

Bing said it took a lot for the victim to tell her what had allegedly happened. According to Bing, the victim also showed Bing marks on her legs.

“She said that Josh Sills had raped her,” Bing testified. “She said when she pulled up on the driveway, he held her head down on him and she couldn’t breathe.”

Also: "Following the verdict, Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement that he still believes the victim in the case.

"In America, criminal convictions require proof beyond a reasonable doubt," Yost said. "The jury did not see it, and I thank them for doing their duty under the law."

Why do I read this thread and think back to when Americans refused to call Cassius Clay Muhammed Ali as he wanted.

That didn’t age well.   I don’t see this aging well either.   But maybe that’s just me?

Yes and it's not like Leonard had a weird reason for asking for this change.

"Leonard explained that his family has always called him Shaquille growing up. The All-Pro linebacker said he was hesitant to correct people about his name as he entered the league in 2018, which was influenced by the advice given to him by Hall of Famer Randy Moss as a rookie to "keep your mouth closed, keep eyes and ears open."

Added Leonard: "I was only called Darius when I was in school or when I was in trouble."

Huh.  Taylor is already on a contract.   Colts position is that he should honor it and they'll discuss it after he has shown he is healthy.

Why should you pay someone $12m that you already have on contract for $4m...especially when they are still "injured"

I don't think they should pay Taylor $12 million at this time. But given the contracts some of Taylor's teammates have gotten under a cloud of injury concerns, plus the new kicker making more than Taylor, I can understand him feeling undervalued. I wonder if this situation couldn't have been handled differently so that the differences wouldn't feel so irreconcilable at this point.

No, it's not taking a shot at his value, as a player on the 53 man roster of one team in the NFL. That comment applies to every person in the NFL, player, coach, owner, etc. It doesn't mean they don't want to pay him.

But what's the point of saying it during a contract dispute? I think it's a way of saying no one is irreplaceable. Is that not a way of telling an employee they are not as valuable as they think?

Based on the quote you provided, that’s not the case.

No one player, no matter how great or potentially great is going to stop the game of pro football to be played based on their no longer playing.

Irsay threw his name on that too. Meaning it will go on.

I agree that what you are saying is what Irsay meant, but, if so, he should have written it that way. As the owner, he would be wise to be very careful about his public words in a situation like this. The way he stated it was undoubtedly going to make the bad feelings between Taylor and the team worse.

  14. Just now, Solid84 said:

Irsay is not taking a shot at Taylor lol.

He's stating a fact. It may seem harsh and overly simple, but it's true.

OF COURSE they would be missed, but the league moves on. Teams will find new guys to carry the load. It is what it is. Don't make it into something it's not.

I'm not saying that Taylor isn't at fault for the situation, but Irsay posted publicly that Taylor wouldn't be missed if he was out of the league. Unnecessary. You are mischaracterizing what he posted. I'm making what he posted exactly what it was. You're trying to twist and soften it.

  15. Relax, the Colts would NEVER use a high first round pick for a QB who is considered the key to the future of the franchise and then not protect him adequately with a solid offensive line that blocks well in the passing game. That would be irresponsible and crazy. It couldn't happen.
