  1. The fascination that is Anthony Richardson can be summed up pretty well by listening to Chris Ballard’s most trusted lieutenants.

Initially, Ed Dodds was really skeptical.

Whereas, Morocco Brown was blown away.

The uncertainty with Dodds revolves so much around the unique profile of Richardson, centered around the quarterback’s lack of experience.

    Quote

“I went down there early in the year, and he wasn’t playing as well,” Dodds said following the Colts selection of Richardson at No. 4 overall. “It’s just a hard study, right? You hit on it, 13 games played total. Last year, I’m talking his sophomore year, he threw like 60 balls. There’s really not an accurate grade on the scale for a guy that, okay, he’s got blue traits, but there’s no resume. Then the very little part that he has, it was a rollercoaster all year. I watched him like four or five times. I was kind of late. I was hard on him at first and then the more I watched – Chris (Ballard) hit on it – poise. I always watch games. I’m kind of old school. I don’t want to watch all these cut ups, I want to watch games. We have a cutup that Stew (Video Director Stewart Cramer) and the guys do that’s like all throws under pressure. That’s where you see, alright the dude has got natural instincts that some of these other guys did not. So, you’re going, ‘Alright, we can fix some things.’ Like the accuracy, I would say a lot of it is his feet. I actually asked him about it one night. I’m like, ‘Hey, what do you think it is?’ I go, ‘Why wouldn’t you have so much time that your perfect protection you’ll just miss one and then when you are under pressure and you have to move up and slide to your left and make the throw it’s perfect.’ He’s like, ‘It’s because I’ve got all these people in my ear talking about mechanics.’ There are like gurus for everything nowadays. I think that just shows he is accurate, he just needs to stop thinking about all this other ancillary nonsense that all these guys harp on all the time

    .”

  2. Alec Pierce - 73 receptions, 1107 yards first two seasons

Donte Moncrief - 96 receptions, 1177 yards first two seasons

Zach Pascal - 68 receptions, 875 yards first two seasons

Why are people always saying Pierce may develop like Reggie Wayne but don't say he may develop like Donte Moncrief or Zach Pascal? 😆

It is probably because he treats employees great, pays them well, raised 3 daughters greatly, and has been one of the best owners of all-time with a SB win. It doesn't take a person that even has an IQ of room temperature to realize that.

Irsay is ranked seventh among current NFL owners in winning pct. - 247-182-1 (.576) - and the Colts have a 13-15 playoff record during his tenure. Much of his success can be attributed to Peyton Manning. "Irsay’s record is 141-67 (.678) when Peyton Manning starts at quarterback and 106-115-1 (.480) the rest of the time, which is how the league usually works."

Irsay had back surgery not long ago. Most likely on pain killers for that.

Irsay has talked about his issues with painkillers starting after back surgery in 2014. Did he have back surgery again recently? I haven't seen anything about that.

It doesn’t. I’m just saying the only thing we have concrete proof of is the date of the statement and the appearances at the games mentioned above. Everything else is up in the air.  Bottomline is we just need to wish him the best. I’m sure the colts will let us know in due time

People here are emphasizing that Irsay was seen attending the Steelers game on 12/16. Did he miss the Falcons game on 12/24, the Raiders game on 12/31 and the Texans game on 1/6? I'm hoping for the best, but this situation is very concerning.

Quite possibly but we can only go off the colts official statement which puts it starting on or about the 9th of Jan.

he was also at the Dec 16th colts Game. He was also shown on Tv in his suite at the Texans game.  So I highly doubt it has been “weeks”.

Where in the Colts statement does it say the illness began around Jan. 9?

Ballard's best decision in the off-season was probably picking Steichen as his HC. And that's before we know how AR will pan out. If he does, this is a great way to change the fortunes of your team - finding two keepers at the most important positions on the team.

I agree that who the GM picks for a head coach and a QB are two of his most important decisions. I don't think Ballard should get a pass on not doing as well as he might have on these two decisions in previous seasons (IMHO) but I am hopeful that in Season 7, we're headed in the right direction. With the NFL's increased emphasis on passing, finding keepers at WR, CB, and DE has become another way to change the fortunes of your team. I'm expecting more at these positions before giving too much kudos and credit, and am hoping Steichen will have a positive impact on how the Colts assess these positions.

So….  It would seem pretty clear, you are very much in the camp if everything that is wrong with this team can clearly be blamed on Chris Ballard.

    Fine, that’s your view.

But in the future, when I call you a Ballard-hater, please don’t respond with….   What?  Me?   Hate Ballard?   No, not me!

Let’s try to be on the same page about things that are obvious.

OK, so per you in this thread, posters aren't allowed to criticize players or the players may hate them. And posters aren't allowed to criticize Ballard or you will call them Ballard haters. You seem to position yourself as a mature voice of reason here but isn't this whole, "You're a hater. You're a hater" thing a grade C middle school jab?

Funny you almost need a good coach and QB to succeed. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. This is why I supported him getting a reset because I knew we were going to finally get the QB and his pick of coach.

I hope Ballard finds the guy responsible for hiring Reich and making the Colts previous QB decisions and lets the guy know that Chris is the GM now and has started making the crucial personnel decisions.

Thanks for sharing. He will play for another team. I'm rooting for him.

It probably won't happen, but particularly as an undersized linebacker who's had serious injuries the last couple of years, I think he'd be smart to retire before he does any more damage to his body or brain (he's been out with concussions 6 times in his Colts career) that he'll have to live with the rest of his life. At age 28, he's already made more than $50 million.

Should a coach’s first year not be included in his record because he didn’t have any say in the team? By your logic, this year shouldn’t count because CB doesn’t have his QB of choice. In all my years of following sports, I’ve never heard of eliminating a season from someone’s career record because he didn’t have the team set up exactly how he wants. It’s bizarre. I also don’t see why those of us who criticize CB using his record are “haters.” Are you a simp or fan boy? I’m optimistic about this team and being in contention for the playoffs and I like Steichen and am excited about AR, but I won’t pretend Ballard’s mediocrity hasn’t been on full display for six seasons.

To me, it's so lame when adults use the term hater for those who don't like something or someone as much as they do. I'm not a Ballard lover, but I am a Ballard liker. Yet I'm sure many would call me a hater. He's in a business in which you need to be great - and perhaps very lucky? - to succeed. I think he's been good, but certainly not great. His shortcomings seem like a fairly short and addressable list, so it's frustrating when he appears stubborn about changing. The Josh Downs pick, though, suggested that Steichen will change Ballard in positive directions. I'm hopeful.

Force = Mass x Acceleration.   The whiplash cause the acceleration.  Force is enhanced when there is a massive body traveling at the same speed that an otherwise smaller body is traveling.

Its also why its very possible that a 255 pound QB might be more susceptible to injury when he hits the ground than a 215 pound QB.

There's a study of NFL player injuries that supports the idea of larger players at a given position being somewhat more likely to be injured than smaller players at that postion. The study is discussed in this article:   https://www.hogshaven.com/2019/6/22/18658887/understanding-injuries-in-the-nfl-part-3#:~:text=The TL%3BDR,stadium-level factors.

    Its findings include:

    • Injury history is strongly correlated with future injury risk.
    • Multiple injuries to the same part of the body carry a 10-15% increased risk of missing time due to injury in the following season unless they are upper extremity bone/joint injuries.
    • Even players with an extensive injury history have a roughly 40% chance of playing 16 games.
    • Smaller players are slightly less likely to get injured than larger players, although this effect is not nearly as important as their usage, position group, and injury history in determining injury risk.
    • Overall, player-level factors are far more important in determining injury risk than team/coach-level factors and stadium-level factors.

The 1 thing that has stuck out to me is, when Ballard has had good-great QB play his record is 21-11 with a playoff win. Luck in 2018 = 10-6 and a playoff win, Rivers 11-5 in 2020. I can't harp enough how much having that good QB means to winning games. Let's hope AR pans out because that is his pick. So if AR doesn't pan out then his criticism is right to do. I think trading for Wentz was more of a Reich thing wanting that to happen so Ballard went the flow because really there were no other good options there. Matt Ryan was an Irsay thing IMO. AR is on Ballard.

OK, but if you're the GM and you let other people dictate what starting QB will be acquired, that's a pretty big fail right? When his #1 job function is personnel decisions, how is going along with others making the wrong QB decision any better than making the wrong decision himself?

You think Ballard doesn’t know how important it is to get the quarterback right?

Luck retired mid-August of 2019, too late to do anything.

The decisions to go with Rivers in 20, Wentz in 21,  Ryan in 22 were made NOT by Ballard alone, but also by Irsay.  And they were made because their view was the team was ready to win each year, if they could just get the quarterback right.  So they went with a short term quick fix.   I have to stress, a decision like this is not made by Ballard alone, it’s done with Irsay as well.

The disastrous 22 season gave the Colts a chance to do a re-set.   I think after this season Ballard has no more than two years  to save his job.  I think Ballard and AR are linked.   If they do, great, but if not, Ballard will get fired.  And I wouldn’t rule out Ballard getting fired even sooner if Irsay has one of his temperamental moments.   I think anything is possible.

Ah yes, they were ready to win! Have those division championships and playoff wins under Ballard made it worthwhile to sacrifice the future of the most important position on the field (especially for a small market team, as you point out)?

If Ballard fully understood the importance of the quarterback position, picking one ready-to-retire QB, one who makes lousy decisions, and one who was totally washed up seems unforgivable, He should have convinced Irsay to go with a different approach. If they weren't going to go with a young QB franchise-type starter because they were in win-now mode, what prevented Ballard from drafting a franchise QB to develop under the veteran starter? Even if he had to trade up to do so? Doing that would be truly recognizing the importance of the quarterback position to the team's long-term success. I know people will blame Irsay and Frank, but GMs are hired to take the lead in personnel decisions and if our GM was not taking the lead - or not able to take the lead - on the most important player personnel decision, I'm not giving him on pass on that.

Please remember stroud struggled first couple of games.

When was that? Stroud had an okay game in his first game against Baltimore's tough D and then was pretty great in games 2, 3, and 4. You don't remember the 384 yards against the Colts in Game 2?

I posted on this earlier. I put that entirely on McDaniels. He reformed his image with the help of some of the most reputable people around the NFL. And at the last minute, he showed that it was all an act. For me, it has no bearing on my opinion of Ballard.

I have no objection to you saying it doesn't help your opinion of Ballard. I just think it's misplaced to view it as a negative.

Also, bigger picture, hiring a HC is hard. Most teams don't get it right. That's not an excuse for Ballard wanting McDaniels, just something I really came around on this offseason. That said, we could have done a lot worse than Reich. I don't think he's a bad HC, but I do think he has some faults and some blind spots. Point is I don't hold Reich against Ballard either.

I don't mean this to be snarky in asking, but do you hire people? Hiring someone as a leader who turns out to have the personal/leadership deficiencies that McDaniels in a crucial position like NFL head coach is a major fail. IMHO, you really blew it if this happens, especially if a guy did an image makeover like McDaniels and you fell for it. I wonder if getting burned in this situation was why the interviews this time around were so extensive.

The teams you mentioned….   are led by Mahomes, Allen, Jackson,  Burrow and Lawrence.     When you have a top quarterback,  you can have more success.

The Colts haven’t gotten the quarterback right since Luck.   Hopefully that changes with AR.

Yes, and, although others disagree, I hold Ballard most accountable for not getting it right since Luck. He should have known this was priority #1 and made it happen.

All have very good to great QB's is why. When we had Peyton and Luck, we did okay (better than okay). Before the Bengals got Burrow (Great QB) they were terrible and before the Jags got Lawrence (very good QB) they had 1 good year in a decade, that was in 2017. Bills went like 20 years straight without making the playoffs, now they have Allen. Chiefs and Ravens have great QB's.

Somebody should have dropped Ballard a note about this a few years ago.

Welcome to the world where the Colts are a small market team and the Eagles are a big market team and can do things the Colts don’t want to.

And Ballard’s approach is pretty close to Polian’s approach as well.

Some teams with smaller markets than the Colts are doing okay, Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, and lately the Bengals and Jags.
