We will see if he grows. Reich never seemed to grow and learn.

My two cents... The quicker that Shane realizes as a rookie hc that he is void of multiple skillset players on offense like he had with the Chargers and Eagles the better off he will be moving forward when it comes to situational football. Some of his staple plays will not work on a regular with this unit. The o-line is spotty, the run game is almost non existent and the receivers are avg at best minus Pittman. AR is the closest thing to elite talent on offense but he is a rookie that is raw. JT"s absence is GLARING!!!! If Taylor is going to be moved and is no longer in the plans long term then the Colts need to sign Hunt ASAP!

The defense is good enough to keep the Colts  competitive in most games. I'm keeping a close eye on special teams because I think Bubba will be missed. They lost lane discipline on that long punt return that led to the Jags go ahead td.

Overall I was pleased with the effort and saw some fight in the team against a playoff team. I think they are headed in the right direction now that we have a talented qb1 to groom but he can't do it alone. The focus should be to put as much playmaking talent around him so he can truly blossom. Go Colts!

I agree with you in your response to @Restinpeacesweetchloe that Paye SHOULD have ten sacks if healthy this season considering his draft position but I think that will be a reach for him because he had a grand total of 11.5 sacks for his ENTIRE 4 yr career at Michigan. The Colts need an ELITE pass rusher and that's not Paye's game. He's a solid de that plays hard but long-term I believe that he'll come up short as that game changing de that's been missing from this defense for years now.

It’s fun not complaining about coaching after this game. Yes everyone still complained in the preseason about Reich.

Panther fans are repeating some of the exact same thing colt fans have said for years. Taking the preseason to casual and panthers not being ready. Also complaining about the Oline and they could not handle twists and stunts. Just have to laugh. For the record Reich have a assistant coach play calling duties today.

Panther fans "just have to trust the process and stay the course"  Frank's lack of urgency and bland offense is now someone else's problem. Class act as a person though.

So far, the only rookie QB who seems to have landed seamlessly has been Stetson Bennett whose experience is showing up

I thought Bennett played well also but even his narrative would have been different IF the defensive back that broke on his pass to the flat hadn't dropped the easy pick six. Bennett's main knocks coming out was that he had an avg arm that might get exposed vs nfl speed, had meh type athleticism and was upper in age. (will be 26 in October) I thought Bennett was one of two rookie qbs (AR being the other paired with Steichen) that landed in the perfect spot. Bennett will benefit from being drafted by the Rams and learning under McVay which could eventually land him as the successor to Matt.

I don't know how much more Stafford has left (injuries included) because I saw decline in his play last season.  Baker played decent in the qb friendly system last season after Matt was shutdown. So don't be surprised if the underrated Bennett shines long term.

Plus Fields had like 1 air yard.  Two extremely short passes the dudes he threw to took to the house.

This!!!! Now Fields has a legit wr1 in Moore that can take a 2 yd pass and go 62 yds down the sidelines. Fields other td pass was about a 4 yd one to the rb that took it roughly 45 yds to the house. PLAYMAKERS who can get YAC make any qb's job easier even with a bad o-line because that quick 1 to 2 yd pass can still lead to six. This is what I feel the Colts lack. Imo Taylor is the only one on this roster that can do that but he's in limbo with the team right now. Josh Downs has that potential but it's too early to tell yet. I do hope they take Downs off return duties to limit the possibility of injury and focus more on his skillset in the passing game.

Now on to this NONSENSE about Richardson who by all accounts looked BETTER than any of the top 4 qbs picked. They all made some rookie mistakes (expected) but I was more ENCOURAGED with what I saw from Richardson and his growth so far. He showed poise against one of the nfl's top defenses, didn't get rattled after the early int, led the team on two long drives after starting with very poor field position. I thought AR caught some unfortunate breaks like the td dime drop by Pierce, the SHORT miss fg by our highest paid kicker, AR had a nice run called back due to penalty and the 4th down stall in which the o-line couldn't move anything to help Hull get a single yd.

As for the others... Young looked very avg in Reich's bland offense that saw him take some BIG hits in his limited action. Stroud looked slow on the field and slow to process overall. Levis had a bad late int but his pocket awareness that was BAD in college looked even WORSE at this level as he took 4 sacks in partial play. Hasselbeck said that he was most disappointed in Levis. I think it’s way too early to make any calls after one preseason game but I'll take Richardson's upside right now over Matt Ryan's shell from last season!!

I say again the great Patrick Mahomes was only at a 56% completion rate after his freshman season but he had a unique skillset that was DEVELOPED and blossomed into the FINISHED product that you see today. No one saw Hurts becoming what he has become either. Same with Allen. Like @krunk said Luck's rookie season saw him throw MANY off target high passes. Manning was a interception machine his first season so much so that he set the rookie record for throwing picks. The bottom line is that if you don't like Richardson it will be easy and unfortunate to nitpick the barely 21 yr old with ONLY 13 career college starts under his belt as he develops into hopefully a franchise qb.

Dak, Baker and Jimmy G by ALL reports have looked terrible in camp so far throwing multiple interceptions per practice causing concern. This nitpicking on AR is almost laughable for a guy who just turned 21 with only 13 college starts under his belt. I EXPECT Minshew to look more polished with at least 25 nfl starts under his belt plus he's been in Shane's system already. Will Minshew finish a season at 75% passing something he has never done before? I doubt it. I expect AR to keep improving. By all accounts he wasn't in a very good offensive system in college anyway. The great Patrick Mahomes was at 56% passing after his freshman season.

An animal needs to be moved, but the operation is cost prohibitive. Someone steps in to foot the bill, now the operation can proceed.

    What's the problem here???

Please don't tell me people are saying Irsay is fine spending $20m to move an orca, but won't pay Jonathan Taylor. Please tell me people are smarter than that...

Makes you wonder because that's exactly what happened on the Carton show and a few others. I simply chose to leave that part out when I started this thread to focus on Jim's good deed. Unfortunately the running narrative turned out to be that Irsay would spend $20 million to help a "fish" but chooses not pay to his star rb who happens to be one of the best in the league.

It has been reported that Jim is spending his own money to help airlift Lolita the orca (whose been at a Florida aquarium for over 50 yrs) to be released near her home waters close to the Puget sound to live out the remainder of her life. Well on the Carton show this morning they blasted and made fun of Irsay for wanting to spend $20 million to quote "move a FISH from one pond to another." Say what you want but Jim is one interesting dude.

Not to mention the.11.9 million cap relief.

Now that makes more sense because love for Gilmore or not I'm quite sure Ballard is trying to build a contender and upper tier corners in a passing league are HARD to come by. I know it's early but initial observations from camp is that the secondary has been getting shown up on a regular. Hopefully this isn't a foreshadow of things to come and they can pull it together by the start of the season. Losing BOTH Gilmore (trade) AND projected cb1 in Rodgers (due to his own gambling demise) has put a damper on a once promising secondary.

No but it was more the blitz pick ups I was watching. There were several clear missed rushes. Especially at RG, usually between RG and C. Like free path missed. Obviously once pass are on it’s different and I’ll be there again Monday. I’m going to 5 total this year, including tomorrowa

This is troubling. I noticed the exact same thing last season in training camp and it foreshadowed the bad o-line play that was

coming once the season started. There has been no major upgrades from last season"s porous o-line that showed a slight improvement toward the end of the year and I guess the team brass is HOPING to build on that while also adding a new FIRST time line coach. Only time will tell if this strategy pays off or not.

The National media praises Jerry Jones taking a dump.

True... but this has nothing to do with Jerry. Gilmore is a heck of a player that was traded for peanuts by the Colts and the Cowboys just happened to be the beneficiaries of the deal. Gilmore was listed as a Pro Bowl snub last season and WILL be missed on the field by our now shakey secondary that lacks experience.

  12.

They simply should've kept Gilmore!!! The national media keeps praising the Cowboys for acquiring a stud cb in Gilmore who is still playing at a fairly high level without really giving up anything but a lowly 5th rd pick. Gilmore cleary was one of our best defensive players last season.

I love it.  This was Irsay letting Peyton know that, while he’s sucking up to the Broncos, Elway will ALWAYS be their greatest QB.  Not him.  But since Peyton is so attached to the Broncos, Jim put the greatest Broncos QB in his top 5 over the greatest Colts QB to show him that he can suck up to the Broncos too.  Lol. I love it.

And note the Elway never had great weapons until the end of his career and won 2 rings with those weapons. While Peyton had great weapons his entire career…  Tell him Jim.  If you’re gonna be down with us, be all the way down with us or get from around us…  Peyton made his choice.

He has chosen the Denver Broncos. Cool. Deuces.  I’ll always have love for the #18 that rocked The Shoe.  That guy is mostly gone now though and only makes rare appearances these days.  When he shows up, I’ll give him love.  When he’s repoing the Broncos, I could care less.

Me personally I don't care one way or the other and don't get all the uproar because Peyton has chosen to distance HIMSELF from the franchise and I'm quite sure that Irsay is taking notice so I'm NOT surprised by his POINTED ranking of Elway over Peyton which I'll get to. Yes it's a little weird to see Peyton be ALL Bronco post football as far as speaking to what the team needs in a "we" fashion (more so than Elway at this point) and to see him be highly visible for a lot of Denver city functions including Nugget games, golfing and charity events. Peyton also has a whole children's hospital here in the city named after him that he rarely visits now but at the end of the day that's HIS prerogative.

The man became an all time NFL great donning the shoe and I believe his ego took a hit when the Colts made a BUSINESS decision to let him go due to injury with the option to draft his replacement in Luck. Remember at the time Peyton wouldn't restructure his contract (don't blame him) due to the uncertainty of the neck injury AND made it clear (by some "inside" reports) that he wasn't mentoring Luck. Now with that being said...

I DO believe that Irsay MADE it a point to name ELWAY over Peyton. I think most polls would have Brady, Montana and Manning over Elway. I even see some make a case for Mahomes NOW or Marino back then also. Think about it Irsay CHOSE the guy who COULD’VE changed the fortunes of a bad Colts team in Elway who REFUSED to play for the franchise and THREATENED to walk away from football entirely to go play baseball instead of even being associated with the team OVER arguably the greatest Colt (outside Unitas) of all time in Manning who DID morph the team into a regular season juggernaut.

Call it petty on Irsay but I don't think he takes Peyton's rear view mirror approach to the Colts lightly. I truly believe that Irsay sees this as a snub to the franchise as time goes on. All of this is unfortunate because Peyton should be KNOWN for the blue and white that finished elsewhere BUT over time the narrative is starting to appear that he's a Bronco great who played for the Colts early and that's sad.

In my humble opinion I think if you weigh both sides you shouldn't come away feeling like he will struggle immensely to get better. I don't feel that worried that he'll have a good transition.

I agree... Some keep talking about his accuracy but Shane said Richardson spins a nice ball. Patrick Mahomes was at 56.8% his freshman season and got better every season after. As Richardson gets more game reps and continues to work on the fundamentals with the coaching staff I expect him to improve vastly on the high dynamic skillset that he's been gifted. AR is only 20 yrs old and smart by all accounts so the sky is the limit for him.

I'm waiting for Ballads supporters to say "Free Agency hasn't officially started yet and you be complaining about no signings"?

Then next week "Free Agency isn't over! There are still some players left to sign".

Then a week later "I'm sure glad Ballard doesn't overpay".

            haha

This is spot on!!! Ready made EXCUSES for a guy who has accomplished absolutely nothing as gm. The national media has gotten OFF his train but some on this board swear by him. I guess it's based on his "polished" talk on team building because HIS approach / philosophy has this team FALLING further and further back in the NFL landscape. Now according to Ballard there's not a qb worth moving up for. Not surprising because he thought the same of Allen, Herbert, Jackson and Mahomes* to name a few as teams moved up to snag their franchise guy DURING Ballard's lackluster tenure. Meanwhile Ballard has CHOSEN the uninspiring carousel of Tolzien, Hoyer, Brissett, Rivers, Wentz and Ryan. Yikes! This is also coming from the SAME guy that saw enough in Eason and the low ceiling Ehlinger to draft them?!! What have our draft picks under Ballard REALLY gotten us anyway related to CONTENTION or winning?

Take his four BEST picks in that long SIX YEAR span and what do you REALLY have? A guard in Nelson and lb in Leonard who BOTH are some of the HIGHEST paid at their NON premium positions. Both looked like a shell of themselves last season after MULTIPLE surgeries. Can they bounce back fully? Hopefully for the team's sake.

JT was a HIGH MILEAGE rb coming out of college which is one reason why his stock dropped in the draft. Now he IS the offense in Indy and starting to show wear which in turn led to him having ankle surgery THIS offense. Pittman is a big possession type receiver who would be a two on MOST teams if not a three on some but he just happens to be our wr1. Moving forward will the Colts pay both handsomely in the near future? We have a top rb in a passing league and a borderline upper tier receiver in a landscape of explosive ones. Who knows but NOTHING will change until Irsay decides to move from the house that's built on quicksand as the Colts continue to slowly sink into IRRELEVANCY.

After giving the biggest money in NFL history for an OG, OC and LB Ballard has decided to up the ante and make records at even less important positions. Next stop - punter and long snapper!!!

On a more serious note - I don't really hate this one. If we are going to be spending on kicker this is a good one to spend on. For some reason I'm having memories of him being on the Colts before... Don't remember in camp or for a workout when we were having troubles with kicking or practice squad... No idea why he didn't stick at the time.

edit: Yeah, my memory didn't lie to me this time, here it is:

The Rams took him off our practice squad to become their star kicker in their Super bowl run.

Not a considered a PREMIUM position but this move addresses a IMPORTANT team need. The Colt's kicking situation (fg wise) has felt shakey for years now ESPECIALLY on long attempts. PATs were even an issue at times going back to Adam V's last couple of years. I never trusted Blanko aka Hot Rod. A good kid but with limited range and that's not good for a kicker. Chase has been a decent replacement but is not considered top tier by any means.

Ironic that we had to come full circle BACK to Gay after he spent time on our practice squad during Blankenship's rookie season by making him the highest paid kicker in FA history. I don't know how many teams were bidding for Gay's service but I'm just hoping that he continues to play at a high level unlike some on this roster whose production declined after getting paid. I love the move just not sure about the price. On a side note to @Dr. T I HOPE that Sanchez can return and resemble his former self but that's a tough injury to come back from as a punter.

  17.

Shane MIGHT (has Ballard changed?) learn very quickly that he left from an aggressive franchise to one that is very calculated and sticks with its core process. Pay your own JAG types, hit bottom bin of FA, trade down and continue to play CHESS while other gms play checkers. I don't know how this has worked out for us so far in the last SIX years but I guess we'll just have to wait for the CONTINUED delayed gratification.
