He’s standing behind Jacoby because at the moment he’s still the QB.  I think he has every plan to make a change this off-season at the QB spot but he knows NOTHING is a sure thing and plans change all the time in the NFL.  So something could happen to make him go back to Jacoby for another year so he has to stand behind him.

And what he said is absolutely true.  They do like Jacoby and love his leadership.  I don't think anyone is questioning that.  But like everyone else Ballard is going to try and improve that position - if he can - in what he sees as a smart way.

I would be surprised to see him over pay for a free agent or "sell the farm" by trading away a bunch of picks to move up in the draft.  He is going to find a deal that he feels good about and it is possible that deal would include having JB as the main guy heading into next season.

We should all be prepared for that possibility.

It was amazing back then how many folks got so upset over the Shipley/Satele thing, then understood in about every other similar situation the guy who is getting paid starters money is the guy who starts, especially when the other guy is basically the same mediocre player.

That Satele/Shipley thing was always just an excuse to validate already thinly formed hate for Grigson.   Saw it right off at the time.  Looks even more that way in hindsight.

According to Pat this created a problem in the locker room.  Quite a few players were not happy.

Maybe you misdiagnosed the problem then and now?  We don't know what all goes in in the locker room/off field.  If this move really caused some issues in the locker room then maybe Shipley seemed like the better player to the rest of the team.  If the rest of the team felt he gave them the best chance of winning this might not be an excuse at all.

Forgot about Quan Bray but that's actually pretty nuts. 157 pounds of marijuana hidden in a car on the US/Mexico border? That's like some Narco's type stuff.

I don't know if you can actually hide 157 pounds of marijuana in a car.  That's a big pile of pot.

    What a couple of *s.

Actually it doesn't. The year he won the Heisman he squinted all the time. The next year he was a pick machine, and that was the year he got contacts. So apparently the better he sees the worse he plays..

Being able to see reality can be a problem.

For 20 years, I’ve thought of Brady being sacked as one of the most fulfilling plays in the NFL.
If he ends up here, I’m sure I’ll get used to him being a Colts and...(gulp) actually rooting for him but it goes against every fiber of my being.

It's just a normal reaction for me.  Anytime the Pats or Cowboys lose it's a good football day!  And Brady is the Pats.

But the NFL is the top sport the way it is.  Most fans do not want shorter games.  Fans like it how it is.   No change needed.   A slow NFL game is already more entertaining than a soccer game.   I like, played and watch soccer too.

I would love a shorter game.  Too long with too much down time.  But that is my opinion.  I have heard from others that do feel games are too long.  It certainly isn't the majority.

Take one CFL team and pit them against a NFL team and watch how an NFL team would completely disassemble the other. There is a reason why probably 80% of NFL starters would be superstars in the CFL and maybe 10% of the CFL would even be able to stay on a roster

Not really a valid comparison.  The NFL by far attracts the top athletes and the left overs go to Canada.

But if you shortened the play clock it would force guys to have a higher level of fitness (maybe not as big and fat as some are today).  If might make the game better.

Football is a game of chess not checkers. There is so much more strategy that goes into a game of football then literally any other major sport, you can't rush that just to appease people.

Chess can be played very fast by people who are good at it.  Strategy is no excuse for being slow.  It is the same in war.  If you are good and fast you will be better than if you are good and slow.

I dont think any team should play more than 1 game away from their own stadium.. Regarding the local tax, I think it will benefit the teams more then hurting them.. Getting big in the European market will boost the NFL revenue and boost the teams income.. I have 7 Jerseys and and a bunch of merchandise, Some may profit more than the Colts on these items, but its none the less money. Ive been to London, and I was in LA to watch the Colts first game next time I will be in Indianapolis and i'll drop some money they it all goes around.

The problem is that the residents that live in the city or county where a really expensive stadium is built are paying taxes that are used to fund the construction and operation of the stadium.  The teams, the NFL, and the politicians sell it as a great boost to the local economy.  But when you only have 8 home games a year the lost revenue for the local businesses - not the teams - is huge when even one game is moved away. And the local tax payers are still on the hook for the cost of the stadium.

I actually live in Portland Oregon and right now there is a push to get major league baseball here.  We all know if that is going to happen all of us local tax payers will have our property taxes jacked up to build a stadium.  I am only willing to support it if the stadium is not tax payer funded.

I did see the point.  It was this....

I guess I just want to point this out as evidence that this team was better than its end of season record."

No, it was not evidence that we were better than our end of season record, for the reasons I noted.

In fact, if you looked at how we played during the last half of the season when other teams figured out our new QB and assuming our gimpy #1WR stays injury prone, I'd say 2 and 7 shows that its just as likely that we were actually worse than our season record.

Needing a new QB, new Dline, new WRs, and new TE; and after taking three swings at it with three high draft picks and possibly still needing a #1 playmaker in the secondary; suggests we aren't that far away from total rebuild mode.

OK - but that isn't the way you made your statement.  Like you didn't know what the point of the thread was.  It was kind of your typical snarky response like you are so much smarter than everyone else.  It really gets tiring.

I agree with some of your points but not all.  We could have easily been 9-7 rather than 7-9.  Not much different, but better.  And if we hadn't had all of the injuries to the receivers we could have been much more effective on offense.

Do I feel like this team is close to winning a Superbowl?  No.  Did this team - with lots of injuries - beat the Chiefs with lots of injuries?  Yes.

If I had to guess...the underlying point of this thread is to imply that because a JB-led Colts team beat the Super Bowl champs...a JB-led Colts team can win at the highest level.

And to guess a bit more...I bet the OP had a “JB = Jimmy G“ post geared to go when SF won...but SF lost...so this post was the backup.

Or maybe is was nothing more than the original poster said:

"I'm not sure if there's a point to this thread, other than to remember that it happened and that when we were playing as a unit and the injuries hadn't piled up on us yet, we managed to hand a rare L to the current Champs.

I guess I just want to point this out as evidence that this team was better than its end of season record."

Why would you try to guess at what the OP thought or meant?  Why not just take what was said at face value?

Well, if you want to put it like that, what's the point of the thread?  We were 7 and 9 but beat the SB champions.  It was one win in a 7 win season.

I assume the thread was started to make some relevant point?  If its about personnel, my point was very good.

You can't look at that game and conclude that we are close.  KC didn't have their stars and we did, our oline.  They replaced their stars with JAGS, and we replaced our JAGS with JAGS.  Big difference.

That point is as relevant as the thread being started in the first place.

If you read the original post you would see the point.

  12. So the OP's original statement is a bit hyperbole.  Seems that is the norm we live in these days.

But if I could pick a QB for the Colts today from any guy available today it would be hard not to pick Mahomes.  He would be on my short list for sure.

We've all seen QBs have days that weren't their best performance.  And when Mahomes was struggling a bit in the passing game he didn't - and the team didn't - choke.  He used his legs when he needed to and ended up leading his team back into the game and ultimately the win.

So while it's easy to say "he ain't that good" who today would you rather have leading your team?

  13. Tom Bray stats for 2019

First 8 games   Last 8 games

    Record                             8-0                    4-4

    YPG                                  281                   225

    Passer Rating                96.5                  81.7

I would be concerned that he has reached a point where a whole season is too much.  Also what will the price be?  A really expensive aging Brady?  I just don't see the point.  I don't see him taking us to a SB victory so I don't know why we would want to drop a bunch of cash on him.  Does anyone really think he wants to come to Indy for a bargain price to play on a middle of the pack team that is trying to rebuild?

What Johnson did do was make maybe the biggest trade in NFL history.

If Jerry Jones would have let Johnson do his job there would have been a couple of more super bowls for Dallas.

Jerry can't help it.  He thinks he's a football man.

Really? Since when does just one player on a team make them a contender?

No matter what the talent level of a QB is it takes a good team around them to make them a contender.

Agreed.  And I don't think - even with Carr - that this team is a serious contender.  Just my opinion of course.

Carr has shown some competence and skill, but I haven't seen anything that would make me think he is the answer.  This team needs to be better.  They might be better after some players return from injuries and the draft - but there are still many unknowns.

The Titans can play with anybody.   Great running game.  Solid defense and good coaching.  Tannehill was their missing piece.  We need to find ours.  I'm hoping we go and get Carr and right the ship.  Immediate contenders if we do.

Really?  Has Carr made the Raiders a contender?

Metcalf has one solid game against a bunch of backups and now everyone is calling out Ballard for drafting Campbell. I can't take this forum sometimes.

Living in Portland I get to see lots of Seahawks games.  Metcalf has been coming on in the second half of the season.  He has improved and learned and been more involved in the offense and it is pretty obvious that Wilson trusts him.

Could Campbell have had a year like that with Luck?  We will never know.  But I bet if Metcalf had been here instead of Seattle his season would have turned out disappointing even without an injury.  We probably wouldn't be very impressed with him.  For Metcalf he landed in the perfect place to begin his development as an NFL receiver. For Campbell that never happened this year.

Who knows what the future will hold for Campbell, but judging them as draft prospects against each other with the way the seasons went for the two of them is just dumb.

Hmmm... I wonder why he wasn’t selected until the last pick of the second round? It’s almost like every single other GM didn’t see this high level of play coming from him.... hmmm indeed...

It's almost like every single other GM didn't see this high level of play coming from him...TWICE!

He was the 3rd pick for Seattle so they passed on him twice.
