Just look through the mock off-seasons on this board... most people were giving Hitchens money in the 6-7M per year range. 9 is a whole different level. He's gotten paid like he's at least a pro bowler and as solid as he's been he's not close to that.
Completely agree this guy isn’t Wagner or Kuechly.

It’s crazy that people have differing opinions in this day and age. Who would’ve thought??

This is much more than I expected him to get. Ballard probably passed because of it. He said in interviews he won't overpay for FAs.
Puts him as 4th highest MIKE... Yeah, it would’ve been nice but the way the trade down is looking more of a possibility in the draft we could still get Smith or Edmunds. Way too many people on this site are crying the first day of FA.
-
Better forward this info to Ballard.

They are Both resources that need to be used. Of course overspending on FA's that don't perform as hoped is not good.
Lets look at Ballards acquisitions from last year.... FA's : Hankins, Sheard, Woods. All good players. Also Simon, Mingo contributed. They should all be decent to solid players this year.
Draft: Banner a Bust... Basham didn't even see the field till last game or two... Grover not much...Quincy injured/healthy scratch good portion of season and didn't too great when he was in. Best game was in Blizzard at Buffalo. Mack very limited playing time. Hooker... 3 interceptions in less than half a season but I think 2 were like Hail Mary type throws....Hairston probably our most productive draftee especially considering he was a 5th rounder.
Basically we only really know for sure that Hairston & Hooker can play at a good level going forward and Hooker has to heal from ACL & MCL. Speed and range is his game and he needs to come back as close to 100% as possible to play at his top level.
Even though we didn't see much from Mack I still love him and expect a lot from him.
I know your not supposed to judge a draft class after only 1 season BUT so far they don't look like the building blocks of a championship team.
Clearly we got a lot more out of our FA signings than our Draftees.
Absolutely, never said you shouldn't utilize both as resources. Just have to go into FA with the mindset that you are looking for some great value guys to contribute at a reasonable price. I do believe that Ballard knew he was switching back to a 4-3 defense so I expect to see some progress from Bashem. Hooker, Hairston, and Wilson will be some decent building blocks in that secondary and I think Wilson was mishandled last year. Mack I think is a good start to a running back committee and I expect another back to come through the draft or free agency and they don't break the bank in FA minus Bell. Hankins is sort of an exception with free agents since he had no red flags that I was aware of, produces, and was like 23-24 years old. If there are guys like that available in free agency then I would be all for trying to sign them. A guy that could fit that mold would be Robinson minus the injuries but if he is willing to sign a prove it deal or a deal that isn't going to break the bank I'd be all for it.

Why can't we do both?
There is building through the draft and using FA to fill holes which is Ballard's philosophy and there is over spending on FAs. You have to be smart and bargain shop or get those guys on wave 2. Prime example a couple years ago with Suh and look how great that turned out.

Do teams lose draft picks if they spend money in free agency?
Absolutely not but it is a business and ultimately over spending in FA is bad for the bottom line. If a young high potential free agent is available i'd be all for spending but ultimately they are going to get multiple offers. So bargain shopping to fill holes would be wise and get the top end talent through draft.
-
I think most are going to be disappointed and I say he spends roughly 30 million. Gotta build through the draft and not FA.
-
That would be a deep CB - Gaines, Melvin, Jackson, Quincey, and Hairston but not a fan.

You also have to keep in mind that Nevada has very little to offer in industry as far as supporting their state. The cost of living is lower there but the wage scale is also lower.
Depends on what you do truthfully. I've lived in Indy and Las Vegas and I made more in Las Vegas, however, the nice areas in Las Vegas are definitely higher than Carmel. You also have to be comfortable living right next to your neighbor which takes some time to get use to.

I think in reality most taxes, excise taxes and property taxes are pretty close when you look at the bottom line for what states charge. Where the big difference is the general cost of living. Things like car insurance are much higher in the no fault states.
As I said in earlier post the housing cost in Indiana is much cheaper in states like Indiana, Ohio, Ky. and etc... The closer you get to both coast the higher houses, apartments and condos cost. Even the burbs of Chicago the housing is expensive.
I built a house in Beech Grove In. and the cost was $110,000. about 10 years ago while my cousin built a home in Naperville IL. and it was $300,000. around the same time. I got more footage and more land than he did but basically the houses were the same as far as what they were.
They essentially are similar for most states which minor exceptions like California is pretty high across the board. On the opposite end you probably have a state like Nevada where there is no state income tax, sales tax is pretty normal, property taxes are low, and cost of living is dirt cheap since vast majority of taxes there are from gambling.

But Jacksonville has one important thing that only a few NFL teams can match.
NO. STATE. TAX!!
Only Miami, Tampa, Dallas, Houston and Arizona have that.
If two franchises are offering roughly the same money, the franchise with no state tax has the big advantage. Roughly 10 percent.
Washington and Tennessee have no state income tax FYI. 10 percent is the top (minus California) and goes down from there but that doesn’t paint a great picture because you have to factor in sales and property taxes. Texas has no state income tax but is 2-3 times higher property taxes than Nevada which is also no state income tax.

Friendly Reminder from TigerTown
Picking SB will not make us a Super Bowl Contender
There isn't one player in this draft that is going to make us a Super Bowl contender. What's your point?

Apple has abilities you won't find in a DB mid-round, if we get him cheap and do vetting on him and think the locker room can handle the guy it's worth it...Pac Man Jones makes Apple look like a choir boy and he helped Bengals win a lot of games..I want to win as quick as possible I don't think Ballard is afraid to take risks on guys either..
I agree Apple has a ton of great abilities. I was pretty high on him his draft year. What’ve I’ve read on him on the Giants board isn’t too great and could be had for a late round pick. I’d rather focus that attention on Marcus Peters if he’s truly available as he is already a game changer that Ballard is familiar with.

I'm sitting here typing this with my MacBook at 77%. Number 77 is exactly what this team needs Nate Solder. Its going to be hard to lure him away from the Patriots but its worth a try. Then draft Quenton Nelson in the 1st round on a trade back. Move Anthony to Right Tackle.
LT Solder
LG Nelson
C Kelly
RG Clark/Haeg/Free Agent/Draft Pick
RT Castonzo
What do you guys think? Bad idea to move Castonzo to right tackle?
Castonzo is underrated by many on this board just saying. Moving one of our bright spots on the line doesn’t sound too appealing to me.

I would just resign Melvin or sign Trumaine Johnson, and bring in a talent like Eli Apple and hope a new start brings out best in him..Hold on to the draft picks unless they want to give him away for a 4 and 6, or something like that...
Eli Apple is a red flag also for the antics he pulled with the Giants. I’d rather just draft a mid round DB than get Apple.
-
Funny choice of words “see the light” considering if Bryant lights it up again he’s gone for the season. Seems like a locker room cancer for the antics he pulled with Juju.

I was hoping LVE would fall to us in the second.
-
Just for rebuttals sake, the RB FA class is always loaded. You can find decent/great running backs outside of the top 10/first round. There could be a potential high upside MLB in Leighton Vander Esch sitting at our second round pick. LVE is crazy athetic and has the brain to go along with the tool box but isn’t getting hyped like Tremaine Edmunds. Another one could be Evans from Bama. Or the head office is hyped on Hitchens and they draft a late round high upside MLB to be groomed to take over for Hitchens.
I think Fitzpatrick is a great prospect but I see him as a safety not a 1CB and this class is loaded at DB. You can get someone like Jaire Alexander at 2, Kyzir White at 3 (whom reminds of Bam Bam Kam), Isaac Yiadom at 4, and Michael Joseph at 5 (who won the Cliff Harris award for best small school defensive player).
Nelson is only an option if we trade back and acquire a ton of draft capitol imo. A better offensive coordinator will also help our o-line. As it stands Chubb is the best option at 3 and we won’t make it past the Bucs who even had less sacks than us.

Trying to stay away from some of the more popular choices.
Underrated
1. Frank Ragnaw, C/G Arkansas - plug and play center with leadership and good measurables. Only down side is may have an issue with twitch athletes but if we could get him with our third it would really help solidify the line. He played the past two years at C but has experience at RG.
2. Jaire Alexander, CB Louisville - crazy stats last year and was in contest with Fitzpatrick/Derwin for top DB but got injured this year. Watched games looking at Lamar Jackson however Alexander always stuck out to me. Top 10-15 athlete but injury drops him a bit. I’d would be okay with him at our 2nd but could be a crazy steal if he fell to our 3rd.
3. Dorance Armstrong, Edge Kansas - a down year statistically but constantly double teamed and schemes against. Great athlete and a consolation prize if we don’t get Chubb.
I’ll add some more when I get to a PC.
-
I wonder if Hercules Mata’afa is big enough. He has good initial burst and played interior in college.
-
I like the overall direction Superman. The Mcdougald pick up would be nice to have another guy that can play both safety spots and he did a little nickel in Seattle. Targeting guys with positional versatility is critical now. I’ll have to watch some more games on Billy Price.
-
I wonder if they would do their first this year and next but maybe that’s hoping for too much!

Sorry had to cut your post down a bit to be a little precise on what I was picking out. The Ryan Kelly vs Malik Hooker debate could go either way. I remember the entire board or I should say most of the board saying they wanted Kelly. I never thought Hooker would last to when we picked and he received crazy hype as a prospect being compared to Ed Reed. I'm glad we have both of them on the roster and see them as building blocks going forward.
There isn't any comparing CB to RG drafting wise because RG was horrible. The argument could be made that just using Mel Kiper's big board would have gotten extremely better results than RG. For instance, Werner's draft we selected the raw prospect and Xavier Rhodes went next. In 2015, it was a match made in heaven I even remember 90% of the mocks had Landon Collins going to use but we took the speedster...
