Castonzo, Nelson, Kelly..............makes for a potentially very good left side of the line.
and if Mewhort can stay on the field then we got a nasty line!

Mathis and Freeney are DE which I said was more crucial to have. Not to say the 3 tech isn't valuable either. I think if we come out of this with good DE, but miss out on the 3 tech we'll be okay. Hopefully we score all the way around!
Still doesn’t address how the quarterback can step into the pocket in that scenario. You need both a 3 tech and edge to really get after the QB in this league. I think CB knows this and will go hard after both in the draft. I also believe this is why he devalues certain positions so when the time comes he can pay the premier positions on defense. I also believe I read somewhere that CB is really high on Grover Stewart but I hope Ridgeway makes some strides this offseason and if not Hurst would be amazing. One edge is set with Sheard and I think his sacks are going to skyrocket.

We played without a top level 3 tech for years under Dungy and we didn't have much problem getting to the QB. I think the DE is more crucial.
Hard to compare when you had Mathis and Freeney playing those positions. Great quarterbacks can step up into the pocket to get around an edge but they can’t do that if the 3 tech collapsed the pocket. Yes, I know swim or spin back on the tackle to attack the B gap. Hurst in the second would be amazing and only a possibility in my eyes because the heart scare.

Yeah, definitely is going to be interesting! I could see another trade down with the Bills now if they pony up more.

Just reported JPP and 4th round to Bucs for 3rd and 4th round picks.

Love it and hope he comes back strong so we can lock him up next year.

I actually have Chubb and Penny in the same spots on the mock I’m working atm. Will Hernandez I was debating but I think he goes in the 20s. Penny is going to be a stud and great value pick.

I go to Oregon State and have seen Nall play a lot he was the best part of our offense and it seemed always about to make a big play
Yeah what caught my eye initially was he just has power. Boy can he break tackles and the more I watched he can catch really well and has excellent body control. If I recall correctly he’s around 230lbs and ran something like 4.55 40 time and has the best 3 cone for a running back his size. This is an extremely deep running back class I think he would be a great option late in the draft if we don’t get Guice or Penny (Penny is probably my favorite).

Michael Joseph, DB, University of Dubuque
Ryan Nall, RB, Oregon State
Siran Neal, DB, Jacksonville State
Troy Apke, S, Penn State
Rashaan Gaulden, DB, Tennessee

BPA, if that happens to be o-line then sure.

Nelson would really give another mauler on our line that would hopefully compliment Kelly. Your mock has some of the guys I want. Evans in the second would be amazing I’m really hoping him or Vander Eshe is available there to start building a homegrown LB core. Conner Williams I think kicks inside to play G and would be a good pickup but if we go Nelson in the first I’m hoping Mewhort comes back so we can use that draft capitol on D. Alex Kappa I’ve been looking into since Senior Bowl and I think he would be another mauler that would be a great pickup at 4. I’m not really liking the Hercules pick in the second I’m not sure his game will translate 100% to the pros. Good overall mock, great job.

Athletically speaking I agree and I want the kid based on that. However second round picks which is what Dallas is asking need to have somewhat clean off the field profiles. I have some concern over his decision making. The PED suspension, someone mention a prior domestic abuse case somewhere. Along with that is missing games due to injury. That is going to give Ballard some pause. Hopefully they feel comfortable because he looks like a game changer to me. It gives me concern that Dallas had concern over giving him a long term deal mostly over injuries.
Here’s the article I read that mentions the domestic violence (point 8) and the school incident is point 7. He definitely has the tools and CB should be familiar with him from KC. Our DC should know him a bit more to hopefully fill them in all.

He does have off field bumps for sure....waived by KC picked up by Dallas, so Ballard and Eberflues should both have an understanding of his issues and if they can be dealt with or overcome.....I am just skimming the edges of the blanket and make sense/fill the hole created by the Hankins release....
Yeah, definitely going to have to figure out who is going to fill this 4-3 line now. I wonder if Maurice Hurst is going to drop a little due to the medical and could fall to our second pick. He would be the perfect 3 tech if his medical is okay.

The gloom is heavier than anticipated on this journey tonight.....no worries, I got fog lights....
This guy has nothing but upside in terms of generating pass rush from the DT position....is younger than Hankins (reaching there cause they are both young) ....come on cheer up, Ballard has to spend that bank on somebody, only so many snow cones you can buy with 72 + mil. cheddar....
He does have character concerns like a domestic violence charge and theft/destruction of property when playing at Iowa. Hopefully a talent like Jaire Alexander, Vander Esche, or Billy Price is selected with the pick instead.
-
That's interesting, or they could wait until next offseason we should have PLENTY of cap!
-
I like the resigns, however, I don't see us going after Suh based on Ballard's approach. Billy Price would be a steal at 49 but won't last that long. Will Hernandez is being mocked in the first now based on his combine performance but would love to have him in the trenches. Not too stoked to miss out on Nelson or Chubb at 6.
-
How is he in press with bigger wideouts? He will need to be very effective at jamming the receiver at the line in order to give the safeties some help. Although we could still trade out of the spot since one of the top four quarterbacks would be available. Edmunds and Smith are intriguing and vital to a Tampa 2 defense.

A key here is the tremendous opportunity that #6 pick still gives to the Colts. If Chubb or Nelson is not there, but the last of the four QB's is, you can extort multiple picks from Buffalo. It's Coltsmas!
Based on the recent FA signings I’m really hoping we get the opportunity to get Nelson. I agree with you and think we are in a great position to still get a premium player. I know Ballard and his group went to go look at Guice so maybe they think the gap between him and Barkley isn’t so drastic or they have some other prospects in mind. Lots of wholes to fill and this gives him some good ammunition plus a ton of roll over cap space to pursue something next year.
-
He may even try to move back with the Bills to grt more ammunition. Definitely will be a more interesting draft considering who may be available at 6. Hoping for Nelson.

Word is Melvin wanted a lot more than 6.5 annually from the Colts. A lot more makes me think 10+, if that’s the case then Ballard made the right call.
If that's the case Melvin shot himself in the foot. The taxes and cost of living in California is insane compared to Indy..

Sounds like the Ravens changed their mind
It was reported as one of the worst contracts if not the worst so maybe that got to them. I’d prefer Matthews.

I’ll be curious to see if Melvin gets his offer and come back to the Colts to match it or if he feels slighted and takes his best offer and leaves.
Either way way people should be calm. We lost Vontae last year in-season and the guys we played were not first round rookies nor big time free agents.
We picked Desir and Melvin up for peanuts and they played well. Hairston was a late round pick and played well. Wilson might be a starter now and was a 2nd rounder.
If if last year is any indication, one thing the staff did well was find cheaper, lesser known corners and turn them into decent players.
If the pass pass rush and Dline are addressed adequately then we will get by without any 8-12M corners.
Id like to see Melvin rewarded and see him come back. But I’m not looking to pay a 28 yr old journeyman huge money for a half season of production done once in his career. Especially w us changing schemes now. So if we lose Melvin I won’t fret. I hope he gets a good offer wherever he goes.
Yeah, I'd be interesting to see what happens behind the scenes. Another, advantage to switching to a Tampa 2 would be that we don't need great cover corners but rather corners that can play in zones and better know how to tackle. I'd love to bring back Melvin on a 2-3 year deal and then grab another DB in the draft. Jaire Alexander in the 2nd, Anthony Averett in the 3rd, or Micheal Joseph (Cliff Harris award winner) in the 4-5th area would be phenomenal pick ups.

We haven't done nothing while all these good players go get signed Ballard just sits there and doesn't do anything besides sign backups to average players that wont fix this team.
He’s been actively linked to multiple free agents. You can’t force someone to sign... still tons of free agents available so worry not!

This draft is loaded at LB. The way the trade down is looking we may be in the perfect range to get one of Smith or Edmunds. LVE would be amazing but probably won’t last until our second round now. Lorenzo Carter is another possibility.

We both understand your point, however, you initially downplayed the 3 tech spot references a defense with the likes of two HOFs. I also believe we can get after the QB just as effectively with Sheard on one side and a great 3 tech. You put the emphasis on 2 edge first then tackles and I’d say it’s 1 edge, 3 tech, other edge in that order. Pretty simple just a little difference in our philosophy. I also believe that Landry will have tremendous value as an end in a 4-3 and can be obtained outside the top 10.
