Cross actually ended the season our highest graded S, ranking 25th out of 99 eligible Safeties graded

I think more than likely it is his job to lose this preseason.

If we don't Bring Blackmon back, I imagine it means they are banking on Cross being the starting SS

I’m really interested in seeing what Ballard does with the FS position, given how important the position is in Bradley’s defense. That’s under the assumption that he won’t want to have Thomas as the starter given Thomas’ struggles and subsequent benching last season. And also Cross then struggling too, who is more of a SS imo anyway.

Just wonder, or maybe hoping, that we might be seeing Justin Simmons calling in for a visit in the coming weeks. To see if he still is moving well enough at 30. I reckon there is enough cap space to sign him by the looks of things. Diggs could be another option. I don’t know do I see a solution in the draft to be honest, there are not many FS options and the good ones are split and not single high.

Yeah Cross really shouldn’t be playing FS, he’s a SS and nickel, last year he was really an emergency FS. I remember I think Bradley saying that Cross wasn’t getting playing time early because he only practiced at the SS and Nickel position, which Blackmon and Moore were healthy making it hard for him to play.

The issue is Ballard almost never spends in FA. This has been going on for 7 going on 8 years now. It's no longer a wait and see thing where we might do something. It's just we aren't doing anything.

At the beginning there was the thought we may do something with Richardson as the possible franchise QB now. It continued when we were supposedly in talks for Sneed. There were some talks for Danielle Hunter. Like usual though, it turned into nothing because of a possible combination of money and/or draft capital where Ballard didn't want to spend or give draft capital up.

We may sign someone decent still, but overall, we basically have the same team with a worse secondary and we are paying the same players more money. The AFC is the tougher conference and we really aren't any better now than last year at this point with most of the top FAs signed. Our history says we won't sign someone big or make a big trade either (just one with Buckner).

So we're headed into the draft without any improvement and now we have to depend on rookies in year 1 as the improvement along with improvements from our own. It hasn't worked under Ballard for 7 years, and unless AR has an insane breakout season, I doubt it works this year.

Like I said FA isn’t over, just because some fans had unrealistic expectations, doesn’t mean we don’t make good FA signings. We talked with Hunter but he decided to go to his home state. The Sneed talk turned out to be not real. The one thing we do know is Ballard usually signs low risk high reward FAs like Gilmore or players that may excel with more snaps like Ebukam, both were very underrated signings. They weren’t big names but were more effective than many big name signings. (Not to mention the steal of Kenny Moore off waivers)

Frankly I don’t care about “big” signings because they mostly aren’t worth it and the one thing the Colts do is find hidden gems that play better than there FA contracts.

  4. Everyone acting like Free Agency is over while there are still great players available. Yeah the big names are gone but there are still great players available at positions of need, will we sign them who knows but it’s not like our Front office has been taking the last 2weeks off. I do think Steven Nelson could be a great addition at CB because all he does is sign 1 year deals as depth then steals a starting position. It just screams like a Ballard type of signing.

Then just walk away. Why make the edit to add? If you don’t want to participate in something any longer, don’t. You had to try to act like you were taking the high road by letting everyone know you were walking away.

Or just say “agree to disagree” and move on.

    No they’re not.

My point is whenever someone on here even hints they’re tired of Ballard’s approach people always jump straight to the “Ballard never hires expensive, big-name free agents”. There are several other ways to add good talent and even for reasonable money, but Ballard just doesn’t.

That said several of Ballard’s day 2 picks haven’t turned out good, but that’s hindsight I guess.  His handling of the LT position was terrible though in my opinion. As was how he handled DE in 2021. I’m not especially hyped about Autry, but he’s better than anyone we’ve had since he left except possibly Ebukam.

I really don't get the Denico Autry take that so many people have in this forum, he did alright with the Colts nothing crazy stat-wise, he average 6.6 sacks and just over 10 QB hits per season over his 3 years. Ironically his replacement Muhammed had 6 sacks and 13 hits the year he was replaced, sure Autry did better with the Titans but he was part of a great DL with Landry, Simmons, and a scheme that attacked the QB more efficiently.

If Richardson is healthy and the defense is bottom 5 in scoring allowed, and we go 9-8 or worse.......

I dont think the DC survives and maybe not Ballard

Hopefully no matter what the DC doesn't survive because Bradley is a bad play caller that rarely adjusts his defense to the talent on the roster.

The Colts weren't close to bottom five in any category last year.

They were bottom five in points allowed per game, granted they were 5th, so barely bottom 5.

This should get plenty of support, IMO because a lot of playoff games get decided then. I do wonder if they’ll try it just for the regular season first.

This might also mean that the refs might swallow their whistles more in response giving the team that plays D in the last 2 minutes an advantage.

I like the idea of being able to challenge penalties, because their seemed to be quite a few bad penalties that affected how games ended this year.

    Minnesota acquires 2024 1st round pick (#23) and 2024 7th round pick (#232).

    Houston acquires 2024 2nd round pick (#42), 2024 6th round pick (#188) and 2025 2nd round pick

If they draft a very good QB out of this Trade, it will be awesome... And comes out of cheaper trades like this.

If that QB goes bust, at least we don't lose next year 1st round draft pick, and lose only a 2nd round pick at that point...

Let's see how much more needs to be spent to draft a QB and if they could get to top 5 or top 3...

I was thinking this could allow them to go with BPA with their first 1st rounder then use their 2nd one on a QB.

If the right person falls they could have the steal of the draft. What do you think @NFLfan

Im not worried about it either.  Im addressing all the fans on here, reddit and twitter that think we should get it done no matter what.

There is a lot of that out there today.  I work from home and check these sites in my down time, this mindset is out there

I had the same thought, Sneed is a good CB but he isn't worth top CB money that lockdown man coverage CBs get. My nightmare situation is we give a day 2 or better pick and a 20+ Mil contract. As there are still FA CBs that can be signed for half that price and are arguably just as good, of course Ballard is usually good at contracts.

Off memory, Steve Nelson is both short and has VERY short arms.  I think he’d be a non-starter for Ballard.

less than an 1 inch difference between Nelson and Sneed when it comes to Arms, Nelson listed at 5' 11" and 194lbs, but I think the difference is that he's not an draft prospect. He's a veteran FA that has had success as a starting CB in the league, with some outlets consider him playing better than Sneed (4 int vs 2 int).

I don't expect us to sign him but a guy can hope, mostly I think he is a great example of a player that would be less than half the price of Sneed and arguably a better player.

Available CBs + FA CBs signed:

    Snead(tag)

    X Howard

    JC Jackson

    Adoree Jackson

    Gilmore

    Maddox

    CJ Henderson

Don't forget Steven Nelson, who is one of my favorites, as a journeyman starting CB has really played above his contract on every deal he signed (and if you care about pff scores, actually had a better season score than Sneed and would cost less than 10 mil a year).

  12. I know I'm in the minority here, but I hope this Sneed trade does not happen. It just seems too expensive when it comes to probably a top 3 contract and draft picks. I also always had the belief that players who won the SB are generally over valued the following offseason. We could sign a starting CB and FS at the 20 million that Sneed will cost.

Is he Tua's brother? Before you mentioned him, I had not heard of him.

Regarding Penix, considering his injury history, I worry that he will get hurt. I also was not impressed with him in the Championship game.

Yeah he’s Tua’s brother played at Maryland, decent arm definitely a late round flyer.

Penix I feel is a high floor low ceiling type.

Hopefully but I don't know if I like anyone but Daniels. Unless we him to second, we probably cannot draft him. Our GM liked Richardson a lot last year.

Outside trading up for Daniels, I think the best move for a day 1 starter is trading up from the 2nd round for Penix if he falls because between him or Nix. He is the better Passer although a late round pick on Taulia Tagovailoa may be good too. He reminds me of a young Russell Wilson.
