  1. I wouldn't be surprised if Irsay got involved.  Overruled any supposed squabble between the GM and HC, if there was any to begin with.   Play calling and long developing plays added to the problem of Luck getting hit a lot.  Luck looked to be losing confidence in himself, and there was no sign that Pep was willing or capable of doing anything about it.

Luck's the the franchise and firing Pep ASAP is an attempt to protect Luck from further regression, IMO.

I would bet money in a heartbeat that Irsay was the driving force behind this.

  2.  First let me give kudos for the Colts run defense. It looks better than it has in a long time. With that being said, the lack of pass rush continues to be probably the biggest problem that isn't getting solved. I keep seeing it game after game. Any QB will pick you apart with that kind of time to throw. How do the Colts solve this problem? Do we hope Mathis keeps improving and rounds into form? Stunts? Blitzes? As good as our D line has been against the run, that's as bad as they have been in pressuring the QB.

Totally over-looked the other thread about pass D.....my bad!

The main fix will be to simply get healthy and some practice for those returning from injury. We haven't been able to run our typical press coverage because we lacked the corner depth with Toler out. Yesterdays game had Davis a little hurt with no practice and a little rusty Toler. Get some reps for Toler and a little rest for Davis and we can finally return to the man coverage that carried our D last year. With that we can blitz more but better than that would be mathis continuing his return to close to pre injury levels, he's not there yet. In order to beat NE we will need more from him so we don't have to rely on a blitz. With 9 days till that game I expect to see a lot more of mathis though he still might be on a limited snap count.

  3. I get what you're saying, it definitely does look improved, but numbers dont lie and we are giving up MORE yards per game on the ground than we were last year...

Yards per game is not that good of a measure. It can vary based on the game situation (like when we are down a bunch and the other team is trying to ice the game). YPC would be a better indicator. The biggest problems with the defense come from the secondary not being healthy. It's limiting our ability to run press coverage and we have been running lots of zone instead because our 5th and 6th corners just aren't talented enough for anything else. Combine that with the lack of a non blitz pass rush and we end up giving a lot of passing yards. Get toler healthy and mathis off the pitch count and I can see those areas turning around real quick and this time we have a decent d line to go with it.

  4. This off season there were some "good" Guards available.  It appears IMO that we weren't interested in Iupati, Incognito or Mathis.  All three of these Guards are starting for other teams and appear to be playing very wel.  Why weren't we interested?  Were they too emotional?  too mean spirited?

How do you know? Everything I have read from former GMs and player agents says that almost all initial FA negotiations happens at the combine behind closed doors. Many times a team is interested in a player but the player has no interest in the team. Either they don't want to play for that team, that coach, that owner, in that city/state or maybe they are just too far apart in terms of price. FA is absolutely a seller's market not a buyer's market and to act like we could have had any FA we wanted is a gross misunderstanding of how it works.

  5. I don't put the offensive stuff on Pagano this week. That's why you have an offensive coordinator, a QB coach, and an offensive minded Associate Head Coach. But if this lingers, it undermines his standing as the CEO of this team.

If some of the rumors are true this is not very representative of the current structure of the Colts and that's a problem and is preventing any real solutions. Again if they are true and I'm starting to think there is a non insignificant amount of truth to them.

  6. In the first game, it was hard to tell where Pep ended and Luck began. I'm not sure that can be put totally on Pep, and I sort of gave him a pass because Luck was rusty. The Jets game was a different story.

To address your question, I don't think anyone expected to be developing Pep Hamilton. He has been better in the past than in these first two games. He has plenty of experience, college and pros. He just has blinders on for some reason. If he can't snap out of it, quickly, I'm fine with moving on from him.

The blinders you talk about are completely inexcusable. How do you even get to the college level and not know this stuff? If I get the time in the next couple weeks I'll go back to some of those games last year and look at our play calling then for a comparison. Also from what I've read he didn't have a whole lot of play calling experience and none in the NFL. The last two weeks almost look like he still thinks he's at Stanford.

  7. On topic, plenty of teams have offensive line issues. Not excusing the personnel people for not doing more to improve the offensive line, but the much bigger issue right now is the gameplanning. There's a way to make up for questionable OL play, and we're pretty much declining to use any of those tactics and concepts with any regularity, when those tactics and concepts should be staples of our offense.

The other issue is that when the opportunities have been there to burn the blitz, the QB has been inaccurate or has missed opportunities. I'm not too worried about that, as I expect Luck to snap out of it quickly. I wish I had as much confidence in the coaching staff to make what I think are common sense adjustments to the offense. We'll see how the next three weeks go...

People shouldn't be talking about Luck regressing people should be talking about Pep regressing. This brings up a better question why are you trying to develop an offensive coordinator when trying to make a superbowl run?

  8. So in other words he [Rick Venturi] stated the obvious and said what he would do or what needs to be done. Did he say anything on HOW he would go about doing this?

What more is there to say besides "stop calling long passing plays when facing a blitz" and "instead call shorter passing plays".

  9. I don't see a lot of coaches hiring an 'associate head coach' for no reason. I'm not entirely sure if it was Pagano that hired him. Of course I'm not entirely sure what his role really is and what he actually does on game day either.

Pagano definitely hired him. They have a coaching history from what I remember while Pagano has never worked with Pep before this job.

  10. I think when you have a Head Coach, who also has an Assistant Head Coach who supposedly helps with offensive and defensive scheming.  And then you have an OC, and between the 3 of them you don't know how to use your personnel and you don't know how to effectively scheme things that looks really really funny!

I don't know if Pep needs to be fired, but they collectively need to make some solid adjustments to what they are doing or else.

I think the situation makes more sense if the rumors are true that Pep is a Grigson hire and Pagano wants Chud as his OC. It could be at this point that they aren't collaborating like they did in previous years that might have covered up Pep's limitations.

  11. I know his head coaching record was terrible, but that was more of a product of the horrific teams he had at the time. But after listening to humble for several years....why is Venturi not a part of the Colts staff in some fashion?? Maybe in a consultant role...but man he knows his stuff. I know he is older, but so are guys like Tom Moore and Dick LeBeau

Maybe he doesn't want to coach and is enjoying retirement.

  12. That sounds just like the report colts staff got back from "the film guy"  this is why I've said Pep needs fired for a long time having access to game tape makes it painfully obvious Pep does not or has not had what it takes to call plays at a NFL level .

Yeah also the Philly game last year. The counter runs in unbalanced formation was working really well then Philly adjusted and it seemed like Pep spent all week just thinking up the unbalanced line and was surprised that he might have to have a plan B.

  13. Luck had a few turnovers but it was mostly because he was getting hit as he was throwing it. The offensive line is one of the worst in the league.

Because he's holding on to the ball to long. The oline gave him enough time to throw most of the night (and last week) but luck seems to want twice as much time to make his throws. That's not going to work against teams with good d lines that like to blitz. STOP HOLDING ON TO THE BALL AND THROW IT.

  14. I don't see any improvements and Luck was the most hit QB the last three years I think he finally lost his trust in the line and that with Peps playcalling is killing him right now.

How much of the play calling is pep right now? If it's him sure but last week Luck was the one who kept checking out of all the runs. Seriously it looks like Luck is the biggest problem on this team right now but he has done so much the last 3 years that most fans don't want to admit it.

  15. It's play calling, substitution, WRs, QB, and OL.   Everything, this offense in general is one of the worst in the league.  I have a feeling though when they play a bad team they will score 30+ points, but the fact of the matter is the O can't beat a capable D.

On the flip side, I thought the D played well.  For the Colts not to score even close to 20 points against the Jets D is absolutely pathetic.

Our defense played well considering the field position the offense put them in and the injuries in the secondary. Barring that and we could easily have shut them out. But seriously what is happening on our offense? Luck is playing like crap and everything else is falling apart. We've had o line issues before but Luck has still played well. The oline looks like it has improved some but still not good enough.

  16.  If you think this guy is going to get meaningful playing time this week then you are mistaken... there is a reason this guy was on the practice squad and not the original 53... my guess is price will take smiths role

of course not. He was promoted for depth. We have some healthy depth that is ahead of him on the depth chart I was simply pointing out that there isn't really another option except promote from the practice squad to fill depth.
